- Wong Liu-tsong (1905-1961), known professionally as Anna May Wong, was an American actress, considered the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star, as well as the first Chinese American actress to gain international recognition. Her varied career spanned silent film, sound film, television, stage, and radio, ultimately paving the way for generations of iconic Asian American actors and filmmakers to come.

Her story reminds me of that of Black Josephine Baker who was an international star but rejected by the US even to the point that she had trouble getting a hotel in NY city.

Beautiful and wonderful actress! Nice tribute that her face will appear on the US quarter very soon. I’ve seen some of her films but I wish more of her work was available on DVD.
I bought some and gave to my Chinese friends at work. I had to give a little history lesson with each gift but that was fun too.

Even a lot of classic movie fans don't know who she is and are often often dismissve once they do find out. It shows how much racism has obscured so much important film history.
