- Jaafar Abdul Karim travels to the land of the Pharaohs - Egypt. With its beautiful 700-kilometer coastline, Egypt is seen as the cradle of civilization. The pyramids at Giza are among the oldest man-made structures in the world.
This isn’t the first time DW presenter Jaafar Abdul Karim has been here. And as ever, he’s amazed by the stark contrasts that permeate this society: An exciting juxtaposition of conservative values and modernity affecting many areas of life including dating. He finds out more in Alexandria where he meets Shaima Ali, founder of the Muslim dating app "Hawaya".
Next on the itinerary is Ras El Bar in the Governorate of Damietta, where the mouth of the Nile meets the Mediterranean. The resort city is also notable for the fact that, since 2018, Manal Awad Mikhail has been the first Coptic Christian woman to lead a provincial administration in Egypt. Jaafar talks to her about bolstering women’s rights, the conflicts between Muslims and Christians and the country’s economic woes.
In Port Fouad, the presenter meets architect Mohamed Hasan. The two undertake a tour of the historical sites by ferry on the Suez Canal.
The roots of simsimiyya music lie in the harbor city of Port Said. Traditionally, the stringed instrument is only played by men. But at the Al Hawiyat Club, things are done differently. This is where Eman Hadoo and her friends founded the first female simsimiyya group.
The UNHCR says more than 250,000 refugees live in Egypt - many of them from Sudan. Jaafar Abdul Karim visits Amira Al Masry. In the year 2019, the 22-year-old launched the WANAS initiative, to support Sudanese children through art and theater workshops and ease their integration into Egyptian society.

Thanks for the wonderful documentaries DW.
Really enjoying this series of documentaries.
Egypt is one of my favorite countries of History. The history of its many beliefs and religions and it's many great people. A lot of religions live in harmony in Egypt and they get along perfectly fine which is so awesome. And let's not forget the history of the Pharaohs the pyramids the ancient towns and cities I can go on and on
Only that modern Egypt is an Arab colony. Thr minority Copts are the descendants of ancient Egypt.

I found the documentary pretty informative. It covered dating relationship, food, politics, music... Thanks for making and sharing it!
I lived in Egypt for two years and I still miss it so much. I love Eqypt🙏💐🌄

Amazing documentary!
Egypt has a vast history that I have learned about. World histories and cultures traveling 2500 years before Christ. Plus add philosophy in there. Great documentary. Love from America ❤️
A great documentary.
A very good journalism, excitement with criticism.
Some of my best friends are from Egypt.. such amazing people indeed 💓
Thank you for this effort. 👍👍
I am waiting to watch this series thanks DW😄
Appreciated the perspective! Great doc.
It cannot be denied that the attractions of Egypt are unmatched in the world, or that the average Egyptian, like most Arabs, are friendly and hospitable. But what makes visiting Egypt such an intolerable experience, is the constant, unrelenting, ubiquitous scams and pestering of tourists, and how unconcerned the authorities are. Sadly I will never visit Egypt again, it's just too unpleasant.
Exactly. this was almost a decade ago, but when I was there with husband, husband caught a stomach bug and spent 90% of our holiday in the hotel bathroom lol. So out of boredom, I ventured outside alone, covered up mind you, but that didn't stop the relentless harassment from street vendors, men following you etc, it was a terrifying experience. I was wearing pants and a shawl but they didn't care, they kept talking and wouldn't leave me alone so I lasted 3 hrs max before I ran back to the hotel. I never want to go back ever again, and if I had to, I'd bring my giant brother-in-law to shield me. The history is fantastic but the current culture, no thank you.
@@SalznPfeffer658it's sad that you had such horrid experience, i assure you that does not reflect the culture in any way, you're dealing with scammers and hustlers that pray on tourists in mainly in the capital where poverty is a real issue.
Normal day to day people are not scammers, or hustlers, this has nothing to do with tourism, it aims to destroy these preconceptions about the average person in egypt.
Its hard to believe that Egyptian authorities haven't fixed this problem even in places like the airport. They must think tourist will look past all the unpleasant experiences and just be in awe of the pyramids and ancient tourist spots and that it will make up for the pestering. I remember I had my passport taken away at the check out at the airport and I was forced to pay US $40 just to have it handed back and then had to pay another $50 to have my carry on baggage returned. Had IT taken away just as I walked into the airport through the main entrance ...I wasnt even close to checking in but the "security" guards took my bag just to charge me to have it back. They like the create thier own jobs to make money
I won't visit/support a country run by a coup d'etat regime that assists israel in an illegal blockade of Gaza!
Absolutly right!!
Beautiful documentary.
Traveling through Egypt as an Australian with two independent European women was an eye opener... The scammers, the sexual harrassment and considering the length of time Egyptian society has been there; the poverty, corruption, third world lifestyle and religious fanaticism are not big selling points...
Yes 👍
Actually the most of World population is like that and is hostile to Western liberal customs and lifestyle
No problem, nobody asked for you to go there. Every where in the world where it’s a third world it’s filled with poverty and corruption; people are not living but surviving. Don’t expect to be a god because you’re a western. The issue with the west is that people are arrogant and narcissistic. How do I confirm this? I live in the west. I see the people everyday. Of course I don’t condone scams. But don’t expect a third world will make of you a pharoah, Gtfo.

Thanks for another great installment to this series. I really enjoy seeing aspects of lives of regular people I'd never see, even if I visited.
It just shows how similar we all are, and so many of us face the same problems, among them the intrusion of conservative religious doctrine and authoritarian governments and politicians that give in to them, or use them for control.
As a Chinese, I studied and travelled in north America, Europe, Russia, Asia, mid east and Africa. The Egyptains are the people I like most, ❤. They are open-minded, warm, modest, and most of them are very hard-working. I wish the Egyptain people have a bright and happy future💞❣
I truly enjoyed watching this documentary and I look forward to visiting Egypt someday soon. As with any nation or culture, differences are frowned upon, but when you're willing to show yourself friendly and walk in humility, love will eventually soften a hardened heart. Blessings to the people of Egypt.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
egypt is finally on the right path i wish all the success
Too often does negative news overshadow the rich history, vibrant culture, and tenacious peoples of Egypt. They are in such position that have and will continue to be an important part of the world, and so I wish them good luck!
Can’t say the same to USA
@@chinavirus841 lol sure
They first should change the name of their country then, and not call themselves the Arab Republic of Egypt if they are not really Arabs.
I think some people want sweets really sweet because they have stronger tolerate to sweet taste. Just like in one region the food can be really spicy, while in another it can be super salty simply because they have better tolerate to the respective taste. Just like some people can handle cold weather better, while others can manage with hotter climate.
The sweets in Turkey Created & are too sweet for me.
Jaafar Abdul Karim reminds me slightly of Anthony Bourdain.
Yes I was thinking the same thing!!
Delicious looking seafood.
It was a short but good documentary because unlike most other videos about Egypt it didn't focus on the pyramids and tried to show the life of the people.
Perhaps they need more vocational schools, that way they get both useful training and a chance to get a job almost immediately after school.
It seems that seeing the sea awakens our desire for freedom.
Part of the problem is that due to some geopolitical reasons, practically speaking, the Egyptians are not allowed to increase their trade volume with many West Asian countries.
Perhaps as the world is becoming more multipolar, new opportunities will also arrive at the Egyptians doorstep.
Hopefully the Egyptians will be successful in making all the positive changes for their land as peacefully as possible together and regardless of their religious or tribal affiliations or differences.
The great Egypt 🇪🇬, love from Morocco 🇲🇦
I'm too early for this video. Best thing I did.
Imagine making documentary about Germany, but only talking about the bad things , which is too many in Germany 🧐

Yes it was so bad of them
Typical European reporting, they are always looking at others problems, but not theirs , for example, during coronavirus luck down in Germany , they had so much crimes against women, girl friends, wifes , and so on, their media started calling those horrible crimes ,, love crimes ,, 🤔😂
Very interesting...a pity its a short film.
there used to be a time before 2011 when you could travel all over egypt's 700km mediterranean coast from el salloum to rafah without any restrictions or police checkpoints. unfortunately that time is long gone as evidenced by your inability to travel beyond alexandria to port fuad, a mere 38% of egypt's beautiful mediterranean coastline.

islam has nothing to do in marriage? really? 4:12 the correspondent is so ignorant about what Islam plays a positive role in a marriage relationship. Just look what's going on in the western family system. its broken and not successful. Children grow up with single parents. and lots of other issues. Islam not only address such issues but it also teaches how to avoid such issues in a relationship.
Indeed
Lol this series is a joke they're bringing those Western agendas trying to impose them on us, talking about empowering women and whatnot.. just keep that crap to yourselves thanks

Such a fascinating series, well-produced and directed, unfortunately the host I find, frankly, unlikeable in a hard-to-define sort of way. But the subject matter makes up for it. Well done, DW.
Very interesting video. A bit weak on the catastrophic level of problems facing Egypt including demographic time bomb, water scarcity, new massive Ethiopian dam on the Nile, excessive spending on weapons while there is little money for social and infrastructure development, state control of media, ongoing hatred of Israel & Judeans after 43 years of 'peace' with Israel, megolamaniac new capital being built, economic collapse and regular money injections from Saudi Arabia, dwindling food security, emigration of skilled professionals aand on and on
And in first stop hate Muslim Egyptian we are copt too and most things you writing not true so shtup

i did not like this documentary, as it paints a narrow-minded Westernized view of our customs. No, "marrying young and having many kids" is not what is expected of most women, except in some rural or impoverished areas. And although political prisoners maybe a world issue, for us it is not an issue because it is simply the price we pay for our political stability, and otherwise, like Dr Manal said, our economy will never change. So no, Christians are not 'oppressed' however that means either. I am tired of the West acting like we need their holy freedoms.

Then what's all this nonsense about Arab Spring and breaking the chains??
