  • The stories of five Egyptian village women supporting their entire families by selling local produce in the markets.
This film focuses on the daily lives of five Egyptian village women who are driven by the need to provide for their children and families by selling local produce in the street markets across the country. It provides an insight into the women’s daily struggle to survive and the sacrifices each of them makes to sustain their livelihoods, just above the poverty line.

Egyptian women are one of the strong women in the world, they don't leave their men to feed the family alone but they work together with their husbands to provide the family need.
Egyptian women are hard working women I've ever seen otherwise may almighty father God in heaven protect them and bless them to live long life with their children's. Am student in Cairo university from South Sudan and I love Egyptian people.

Marisailuminad: all women that have children work hard to raise them; all their fun and strength comes from that. There are women like that in every country. My mother did that in Italy and America. Such women are liberated before time and are not afraid of any men that try to interfere with them. Some years ago in Cairo during a demonstration Egyptian men attacked an American woman journalist, the Egyptian women around her defended the American journalist by attacking the cairo's men. Long leave women the world over.

"she works to help me support our family"
No, dude. She supports the family. She is the one doing 95% of the work and you are setting back coasting.
She does the work outside the home. She does the work inside the home.
She is the provider of all things.
    She has provided the children
She has provided the child care
She has provided the money to pay for a shelter and education for the children and you.
    This dude has no shame.
No wonder there society is in such bad shape. All the men do is create costs.
You can't have a good society when it is full of unproductive and worthless men.
The proper management of human male capital is what makes or breaks a society.
This is a great example of the consequences when men and boys are improperly managed and allowed to do what they want to do instead of what they should be doing.

It happens in south America as well. Both have faiths that tend to look at any children given to you as God's will for you (Egypt being Muslim and most of South America being Catholic) Meaning birth control and western concepts of "family planning" are not really a thing traditionally. So you can easily end up with 6 or 7 kids over a lifetime.
It's not a bad thing per say. It is a cultural difference. A different perspective. The world is made of them and we would do good to understand them.
We're all stuck on this rock hurling through space together.

Yes, gender inequality in Egypt is a big issue, all thanks to the Islamic regime. If women don’t wear hijab, they risk being harassed or even killed if they’re unlucky.

All the sellers are admirably canny and shrewd, but seemingly with a heart. The most memorable for me is the one who says, about everyone asking for lower prices than she quotes (at 22:33), "This is business: bargaining and headaches!" What a great line! May prosperity find them whatever they do.

woman is free when she makes choices that are inalienable for her.

Thanks to Egypt's modernisation programme, the young men left the countryside for the city, to go and work in offices; hence, nobody was left to work in agriculture; hence the countryside became impoverished, and Egypt has to import wheat and other things. (Passing this point on from an Egyptian scholar). So: you can thank modernisation for making Egypt move further back in time.

Interesting to read some comments and see how women are seen as the ones who should take care of the children and men should provide for the family - it is just so ancient-thinking.
Here in Europe, normal thing women work the same as men. Women are strong and independent - equality.
Anyway, it is incredible how hardworking these women are. Stay strong!
