The reason for the smell being associated with monsters is three fold.
1: some animals communicate by scent. Gorillas, for example, do this, including a rotting meat smell to say “danger”. This is why reports going back centuries of bigfoot/sasquatch giving off the smell is solid evidence it is or was a real thing. We didn’t learn about ape scent communication until the last few decades.
2: carnivores that are living off of meat have distinct musk. You can notice this in people if you have a good sense of smell. Vegetarians and vegans put off a different kind of scent than your standard omnivore human.
3: reptiles have a STRONG unpleasant odor. Most humans have an aversion to it even more than carnivore smell.
These three reasons are why its a realistic detail to include in any monster story. It pulls from real life.

What if: when interdimensional entities are in our reality, they are distorted by the dimension shift and surrounded by distortion. This distortion makes them hard to focus on (blurry, fuzzy, staticy images) and also distorts reality in a way that our senses cannot actually process. This causes the horrible stench that seems to be so pungent around cryptids. If portals between our reality and theirs happen as a natural phenomenon, some creatures might be able to generate them at will; allowing them to hunt in our reality which might be much easier than hunting in their own reality.
This is probably my FAVORITE creepypasta, I find it so interesting and it's just really unique in general. CAN'T BEAT THE CLASSICS!!!
