Lose Weight After 50 (Part 2 of 3): 7 Fat Loss Strategies that Work

  • In this video, I walk you through fat loss strategies that work after 50. If you’ve been followed my channel, you know that I am a proponent of low carb/high-fat dieting, which is certainly an effective strategy for weight loss.
But when we are over the age of 50, we need to look at this diet strategy with a bit of a twist so that we make sure we are keeping our carb intake low enough to bypass insulin resistance, AND that we are eating in a way that feeds our good gut bacteria.
This can be a tricky combination because these two things can conflict with each other. I explain how following a "Smart-Carb/Right-Fat Diet" is the path to successful and healthy weight loss after 50. And, I walk you through 7 strategies to make the diet work from my perspective as a Health Coach.

I never could really lose much weight. I didnt need to lose a lot, but diets never worked. The only thing that worked for me is Intermittent fasting. I just delay when i start eating. Once i start, i become more hungry...mainly because i didnt cut sugar completely out and that ends up boosting appetite. I can eat how i like to (and I eat a lot!) and i am slimmer. I still try to eat a salad every day. Once u go a distance without eating, you level out. I can say that this works because i do it.

The thing I've discovered about beans and pulses (which I eat every day) is that you should soak them for DAYS (not just overnight) before you cook them. Then I digest them with no trouble at all. They are so cheap and healthy, I'd encourage everyone to try this if they've had trouble with dried beans. They are ridiculously healthy!!

I've been doing keto since sept 1st. I'm female and 65. started it to lose 30 lbs. so far have lost about 15 and gone down 2 pant sizes. I am not a sweets eater so I don't miss that, but I have a couple of questions for you if you would be so kind as to answer them.
1st: I try to stay under 20 carbs per day. gone off 3 times to indulge in wine, but that's pretty much all of my cheats.
2nd : having a terrible time with leg and foot cramps at night. I drink plenty of water - take vitamins , but still have issues so getting a good night's sleep is VERY difficult.
3rd. I track my intake in the my fitness pal free version. several times a week - I get the message that it can't forecast my weight loss because my calorie intake is too low. (usually around 800-900)
4th: with a keto diet - If you calorie count is low - will it adjust and go into starvation mode like a typical low calorie diet? I tried losing weight that way, but never had any success. the less I consumed, the less I required, so it put me at a standstill. I seem to be slowing on the weight loss front and wonder what I'm doing wrong. IF anything? I started exercising a couple of times per week (vigorous walking for 20-30 minutes).

Hi ssarge2, I'm not sure if you are a member of my coaching program, but these are issues I can address for you in the forum. A bit much for a CZcams comment.

how about one question. if your calories are too low - does your body go into starvation mode and store fat?

So are you saying no keto or yes keto to women after age of 50

    • @beckygillaspy

Hi Cindy, low-carb diets are effective for women over 50. Some women, depending on their metabolisms, may need to eat a very-low-carb/keto diet.

Thank you for discussing the carb/fibre conundrum. I’m 67, recently diagnosed type 2diabetic with very low carb tolerance. I lost quite a bit of weight , am out of diabetes blood sugar range and other readings are now favourable. But my weight has stalled and I am still very overweight. My question is, if the low carb or keto diet requires so high a percentage of good fats, will that amount of fat prevent the body using up stored fat for fuel because it has all this new fat coming in? I’m sure there is an answer to this but it’s not clear to me,

Hi Lynne, it is possible that your body will use dietary fat over body fat if it's available. It's important to have a well-formulated diet that provides you with the right mix of fat/protein/carbs

Dr. Becky Gillaspy ah but that’s the conundrum isn’t it? The keto diet says around 80% fat. If you eat much less than that you don’t get ketosis or fat burning. What’s the answer?

Yeah but what about too much protein being bad on your kidney's? Just curious

      @beckygillaspy  Před 5 lety

Hi William, I teach a moderate protein diet. Kidneys can be affected if protein is too high, especially in those with kidney disease.
