Is drinking/eating dairy bad for you? This very important question deserves more than just a yes or no answer. Parts of dairy are nutritious and delicious, other parts of dairy can be inflammatory and fattening. But which is which??
This video discusses several different concepts about milk & dairy, including gaining fat, causing inflammation, when it's OK to drink milk, and more. Leave your questions in the comments if I didn't cover some aspect of this topic. Thanks!

When I got up to over 400 Lbs I used to drink a lot of whole milk. Now I have cut my dairy back. I still consume butter, heavy cream in my coffee and a limited amount of cheese. But I have given up drinking milk and eating copious amounts of cheese. When I eat too much dairy I itch now. BTW as of this morning I am down to 233 Lbs.

Being from a dairy family background, I was always told "milk is for kids, butter and cheese is for adults" (of course the dairy we were talking about was from tit to tank to table, raw unpasteurized milk. It still had all of the cream and butter fats in it).

Unpasteurized is the best. For adults too! If it didn't have so much sugar, I would drink it more often. I personally believe its the killing of the good bacteria in pasteurized milk that's the problem and why it causes so many problems for people. I've even heard that dairy intolerant people can drink unpasteurized milk.

@@angelrebekah9153 our research would lead us to believe you are correct. The large problems we’ve seen have been since we started pasturing milk. We have seen first hand that lactose intolerant people can drink unpasteurized milk and don’t have the problems they would normally have. We believe there are naturally occurring bacteria in milk that helps break down the milk in the digestive system.

My mothers family were dairy farmers jersey cows, on good Aus native pastures with interesting flavours. Our bloodline heritage was milk drinkers. I grew up on raw milk, drank glass or two each meal, and on coming home from school. We had 2 big jars of thick cream each week. My family lived healthy good looking and well to 100. I eat cream, butter and cheese. We don’t do any of the things he described. Long story short. My wife in one day went from completely healthy to being completely incapacitated for 10 months with nausea & vertigo. She saw numerous specialist, had every scan and lab test run and in the hospital several times; they were saying it was in her mind. They had NO CLUE. She was in the hospital at 96 lbs and being fed Ensure (milk based) when the results of a previously ordered test showed she suddenly developed a SEVERE intolerance for anything dairy; casine, whey, etc. My eyes were opened to the health care system and not in a good way. Between hospital stays, scans, tests; many tens of thousands of dollars was paid. However, the $300 lab test that found the problem was not paid because it was ordered by a Naturopath.

Tomorrow will be my first day dairy free. I sure hope that helps me with inflammation. I've already cut out all added sugar, gluten and I've been doing keto so I was still using butter and heavy cream, and my inflammation had gone down a lot after quitting sugar and gluten, I had also stopped heavy cream in my coffee and I just started having some heavy cream in my coffee again. All of a sudden inflammation is back and my typical knee inflammation came back. My back hurts so much and I have no energy and just want to be in bed all day but I can't because I have 2 high school kids to take to school and a 5 year old I'm homeschooling. I really pray cutting out dairy 100% will help me feel better🙏

I was using heavy cream ( a lot of it) daily for over a week until the inflammation in my knee joints became unbearable. I gave up milk for 45 years until I learned about the difference between the two caseins: A1 beta-casein. Milk from breeds of cows that originated in northern Europe is generally high in A1 beta-casein. These breeds include Holstein, Friesian, Ayrshire, and British Shorthorn.
A2 beta-casein. Milk that is high in A2 beta-casein is mainly found in breeds that originated in the Channel Islands and southern France. These include Guernsey, Jersey, Charolais, and Limousin cows.

Dr. Berry, your advice has changed my entire perception of health and fat loss. However, this video was a revelation to me. For YEARS, I have had horrific finger infections. Chronic paronychia. In 2017, I had surgeries to completely remove 7 of my finger nails and their nail beds. I also had crescent incisions in each of those fingers. For a very short time, it seemed like there was an improvement. Now, I have lost all of the 7 nails that had tried to grow back, and have recurring infections again. What I just realized during this video is that my consumption of dairy products had increased before the surgeries and after. I am ashamed to tell you just how much cheese and ice cream, etc. that I have been eating. My weight had gone up to 141, and I am 5’ 7” tall. For the past three days, I have been doing 2 eggs, some bacon, and steak, with OMAD. I am 138 as of this morning. I drink black coffee only in the mornings, one cup of green tea and water the rest of the day. I am in optimal ketosis, according to the strips. But, the most AMAZING result is that already my fingers have started to improve! I will continue this journey and hope that I might actually experience complete healing of my hands, as well as get back to my best weight (between 117 and 125). ALL of the 8 doctors, dermatologists, and surgeons that I have seen have assured me that there are no options left to me. NONE ever mentioned my diet or asked me, “What are you eating on a daily basis?” I believe it was Hippocrates who stated, “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.”

Thank you so much for making this video! I can't believe in all my years that this is the first time I'm hearing this about dairy. I always knew about lactose intolerance in people, but I never realized until seeing this video that the proteins in milk could actually cause inflammation in the joints and skin. At least anecdotally in our family I believe you are spot on.
A few months ago I started getting hooked on iced coffee, but the only way I can drink it is with a ton of half and half. I started drinking it every morning in the largest size cup (I think 24 oz. or more) which meant a LOT of cream. A few weeks later I suddenly started having really bad aching pain in my lower back and right shoulder (with no acute injury to either). I assumed I must have slept the wrong way, but the pain never went away from that point on. Ironically, for the last week and a half I got really busy and skipped the iced coffee in the morning, and noticed about a couple of days later that the pain in both areas started to go away - it's now been completely gone for the last 3 days. I had assumed that the heating pad and Motrin (which I'm now no longer taking) were what finally resolved it, but today I just saw your video and am stunned to think that all the cream I was adding to the iced coffee might have been what brought it all on in the first place!
Then I realized that my son also just started drinking iced coffee the same time I did, and the same way I was preparing it because he also liked it that way, and shortly after his forehead started breaking out with acne (he's 16 and his face had been completely clear up to this point). Likewise, my daughter all of a sudden started drinking a ton of milk when she was around 11-12 and the same thing happened to her. She's now 21 and besides acne, has also had a lot of various inflammatory conditions of her skin.
I shared your video with both her and my son today and and they are both going to try to stop all dairy for a couple of weeks to see if it helps their skin. Both of them have been to dermatologists (my son recently because of the acne) and it's hard to believe that the doctor never thought to mention dairy to either of them as at least a potential contributor to their issues.
Your video also now has me wondering if it's the MILK in milk chocolate, rather than the chocolate itself, which may be the real culprit with teen acne.
Anyway, this may well be one of the most helpful health type videos I've ever seen! Thanks so much for this helpful information!!

I did carnivore for a couple months before getting knocked off the wagon, but even on the diet I didn't give up milk. I absolutely love it. I still felt so much better than on a carb rich processed diet, and I noticed a huge reduction (actually elimination) of my joint pain and inflammation. As I am starting to get back on the carnivore diet I may at some point decide to cut out milk, but I'm not sure I will fully give it up. I really do just love milk.
I am NOT recommending anyone else drink milk or going against anything Dr. Berry is saying. I am purely an advocate of individual health and my individual experience may or may not resemble anyone else's. I didn't have any kind of symptom that would have made me think milk was an issue, so I didn't cut it out completely.

Thank you for this information, Dr. Berry. Today is Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, and I'm in the middle of GI distress that is keeping me close to the porcelain throne constantly---and I just had a cream cheese-loaded fat bomb at the end of my OMAD today. My system reacts within minutes to such stressors, but I couldn't figure out what the culprit was until I listened to you in this video.
Yet another genre of food that I have to eliminate from my diet. I was keto for three months, but after having COVID last month, and being unable to eat for almost six full days, I realized when I did eat again that all raw vegetables are out because my system can't handle them.
Now I'm almost 100% carnivore, but will have to totally eliminate dairy except ghee (DEEP SIGH). As my closest friend has said about herself and me (we both experience GI distress), "About all that's left for us is water and air, and the quality of those in this age is highly suspect!"

    However I think that
I am an experienced man when it comes to generally good and healthy diet, but I believe that if you look historically at normal diet far back, you also see that people have eaten these milk products way back with a rellatively good health! I therefore believe that instead of copletely giving up products such as butter, cream and milk, one can achieve what one wants in terms of health by reducing the amount. I think moderation is often better than stopping completely, because it doesn't always lead to progress.

I already notice that I have no bloating whatsoever. I eat until I am full, then leave the table feeling like I never ate. Before I had to workout in the mornings and eat at lunch time because I didn't like intense physical activities with a bloated stomach. I can eat carnivore and workout right after and I feel even better than waiting to eat after a workout. I feel super alert and clear minded. So alert and energetic that I have been having a lot of trouble sleeping at night. I am very optimistic about this diet and potentially way of life.

Hi Dr Berry, we meet couple of years ago in a beach in Florida… I was the one with the “brains” (hope that help to remember). It is possible to do an update video about this but taking into consideration milk type A1 vs A2? I could not tolerate milk my entire life… but during my time in Florida, I manage to find a local farm that had A2 type raw milk and the experience was totally different. I could even drink a glass without any problem. One of the biggest difference between A1 milk and A2 milk is the betacasein protein. Most milk or all commercial milk in the western side is A1 type (genetically altered milk due to cross breeding), A2 milk is from cows that still have “their original” DNA and not cross breed, so to speak.

I accidentally left the stove burner on low and on the shelf above the stove I had a container with butter in it over a period of several hours it melted the butter into liquid and I was very surprised to see several droplets of what appeared to be milk I thought right then this is not pure fat. I'm a 77-year-old male and in my younger years I drank all the milk and ice cream that I wanted but I have noticed as I'm getting older I do not think that dairy products agrees with me like it did when I was younger. Anyway to older seniors out there like me even if you've never been bothered with dairy before but now that you're in your late 60s 70s or higher maybe that's not the case anymore anyway definitely something to think about.

It may not be the staple of their diet but they still do it and love it. I also think it has to do with the milk being pasteurized. We've drank milk as a species for a very long time.
