Totally agree on durability and reliability. I received one of these from my father as a birthday gift when I turned 16. I'm 49 now, and in the 33 years I've owned it, it has been a solid and reliable firearm. No issues whatsoever, and it's still by far my favorite gun at the range.

I've owned a Taurus PT99 for 30 years now and it is currently my EDC, yes the mag release gave some trouble but I ordered a new one, installed it myself and not another problem since! All I have done is changed the springs a couple of times in the 3 decades that I've owned this gun.
I know it is large and heavy for an EDC but with a good rig and belt, I carry this thing all day long. It goes bang every time, metal or brass, it doesn't matter.

I’ve had one of those for about 20 years. I still carry it regularly. It’s a nice weapon. I definitely prefer the 1911 style safety over the Baretta. I had a friend who was a gunsmith offer to do some work to it. He chromed some and put a solid black finish on other parts. It looks very nice. That was 10 years ago or so and I’m still happy with the results. Over all I’ve been very happy with the results. It’s a good gun and I’d definitely buy one.

Taurus didnt actually change the position of the safety from the slide to the frame. That was Beretta in Brazils original plan and the machinery they sold to Taurus was tooled for a frame mounted safety. Beretta was intending for a frame mounted safety but never implemented the design change. Taurus just rolled with the building and machinery that Beretta sold them.

I purchased my first PT 99 in 91, I've tried to make it jam by loading 10 magazines with every assortment of ammo mixed together. Lead nose, ball, hollow points, truncated head, brass, steel and aluminum casings, +p+ 115 grain,. 124 grain,, 147 grain and subsonic. All fired rapid fire and still have never had a jam. That's an endorsement Taurus can't buy. Berretta's are legendary for durability and accuracy, and Taurus's version is as good or better because they bought the factory the parts and kept the workers on. This might be my next pistol.

That was in 90's. Since then its a whole different factory, another tools, another workers because taurus needed to walk with their own legs. Only the project remains the same. Actually i still preffer the old pt92 with the small serrations, those are the guns that were built under the beretta factory, i think it has a better machining and a better finish, just like the revolvers. Old taurus is like the old german-made sigs and new taurus are like new american-made sigs.

I've owned one of these for almost 10 years now. It has been 100% reliable, and I actually shoot it better then my Beretta 92FS. I don't know why; I just do. The only thing I noticed when I first bought it was the white dot painted in the front sight was not completely filled in. It didn't hurt the accuracy at all; it just suggested that one slipped though the manufacturing process. I do like the frame mounted safety over that of the 92FS.

The factory magazines were junk when I bought this firearm. They keep on nosediving the rounds in every 5 rounds fired and they do not lock the slide back after firing the last round because the follower can't reach the slide catch. I got rid of them, and bought 5 Mec Gar anti-friction magazines. They are reliable, and they don't have any problems even you load in Hollow points.

Taurus has had it's ups and downs from what I've seen/heard/read but my PT92 (my first gun bought at 18 in Mi, around 25 years ago) never had any issues. Of course I probably have less than 200 rounds through it. Looks like new with Dark wood grips. I only keep it for sentimental reasons. Hard to beat my MPs or other firearms now. the Beretta I had (and just ordered a new one on sale at palmetto) was quite a bit tighter/better but of course quite a bit more in price.

It's over 5 years later. Still good? My 30 year old PT92C is still going strong. I just dropped a 6" Jarvis barrel in my PT92AF-S, looking forward to trying it out.
If you're machinist inclined, one could drill out the center dot on the front post (from the opposite/front side) and press/push (& epoxy) in a piece of fiber-optic cable. I haven't done it, however, it should be doable in a drill press, securing the slide rigidly, and with the proper drills/reamers.

I just bought mine last week and finally fired it two days ago. Unfortunately it seems to not like +p ammo very much. I fired Sig M17 124gr +p and the slide would jam and the casing would not eject. The casing would still be in the barrel and the next bullet would be pressed against the back of the casing, causing the slide to get stuck. It would do this about every 5 rounds. However, it did just fine with Federal american eagle 124gr and 115gr Winchester whitebox. I'm wondering if it has something to do with my extractor seeing as how others are able to feed so many different types of rounds through it. Unfortunately there aren't any good images of what a pt92 extractor looks like in order for me to compare mine. It also had some underlying rust on the slide near the sights and the gun was factory new.

@@BoomStickTactical thanks for the reply. The ammo was also NATO. I actually took it into the shop the other day to get a custom cerakote job done on it so I'll have to wait for it to come out. Aside from that ammo it fired the others really well. I'm going to test it with my 135 grain hollow point rounds and try some heavier rounds next. When sending it back to Taurus do you just use your local gun shop to ship it? (Sorry I'm new to the warranty process).

Small correction, the pt92 is a copy of the original 92. Beretta had a factory in Brazil and made the guns for the Brazilian military, it was actually their first big contract prior to the US military. When Taurus purchased the factory from Beretta they acquired the old blueprints with the purchase which led to the pt92 with some modifications done by Taurus. Beretta later developed the 92fs which brought changes to the design like slide saftey etc. and many more over the years. Similar guns but different. If I was going to do the comparison I would have done it with a 92 not 92fs. If you are going to compare a 92fs against another gun it should have been done with the Chiappa fire arms m9 pistol but for a cheap pistol it’s probably good I don’t doubt it, but your guns quality probably was a little better given the year of purchase. I bet the quality control was better at that time versus now. In my opinion if you really want something like the beretta by a beretta as I own a lot of berettas they are a rock solid gun designed to give you 10s of thousands of reliable rounds time after time. Oh and CZ is real good too both my personal choice of pistols to carry, matter of fact the only two brands I will carry......just my two cents. Overall good review keep up the good work.

7:00 10 minutes with a Dremel and I modified two Beretta mags to function with my Pop’s Taurus. You just grind a circular hole into the rectangular hole on the side opposite the mag release button.
I just widens the hole a little bit at a time until the mag locked into place.
I also had to grind down the top of the magazine on the corner above the circular hole. The crown of the Beretta mags aren’t as tapered as the Taurus mags, so the corner catches the mag release pin.
