In perusing these single-mindedly , she lost her morals and lost her true self. Twisted into something unrecognisable and festering into the worst of the worst that kind of environment would produce. Her story is full of malice , sadness , tragedy and what happens one when lose focus of themselves , of what is right and wrong when blinded by the allure of power.

Hailan had quite the traumatic past too, and dipped her fingers into villainy, but it was only ever done when they were backed into a corner by their enemies attacks. She may retaliate, but would never initiate conflict. Wei Yanwan is completely devoid of morals.

I've been watching a bunch of clips on this, and I must say this, these amazing ladies wouldn't have let insecurities and jealousness consume them and drive them to do malicious acts, had it not been for the Emperor who couldn't run his harem properly. I mean, how about you just marry three (if heirs are the real problem for you) and maintain diplomatic relationships with other important clans. These women wanted to be loved, and for love and importance, they committed immoral sins.
While the emperor in this drama has his flaws and problems, I'm afraid the solution that you suggested of keeping the harem to the small number of 3 is not up to him. The system and rules of the palace has been set for hundreds of years and one does not easily defy these rules. The Chinese (especially people in this period) value tradition passed down from their ancestors and there is significance in a lot of stuff they do. Yes it maybe illogical from our point of view but from theirs it's something they have to abide by, it's just how it is. Even someone as powerful as the emperor has got to abide by these rules and traditions.

I think aside from Ruyi and Consort Shu, none of the women really love the Emperor wholeheartedly or feel the big need to be loved by him (some of them even have other men in their hearts even after joining the harem). They just did it for the glory of their clans and any attention from the Emperor mean much bigger stepping stone for them to climb higher.
