This whole thing pisses me off, like damn, Yongji nearly died, Ruyi was nearly stabbed, but the Emperor was still more concerned about petty jealousy. He didn't even comfort Yongji, poor kid was scared but had the presence of mind to run when he had a second's chance, Yongji deserved more credit. Your son was literally about to die, TF! 😡😡😡
I didn't even watch this whole clip because of how much that pissed me off the first time I saw it. Like your family almost died man.
Well, thats how households were in the old days... There were many members that attachment and care towards individuals were pretty much minimal especially in the case of royal households where there were many women and children... This particular emperor is famous for having the most number of women in his harem too... So, you can guess the rest... Besides, in this series you can see later on that he was more concerned about the fact that that guard "touched" the empress by falling on her and even concludes that they are having an affair considering this incident as a proof, even calling it an embrace and has that guard punished... Thats how stupid, jealous, egoistic and petty the emperor in this drama is... There are multiple dramas showing these historical figures, that look completely different (eg: in this one Wei is the ultimate villain whereas in Story of The Yanxi palace, wei is the smart, witty and good consort while the "Nara empress" is the evil one and the emperor is shown to be sensible guy inspite of his ego)... I have heard that there are many politically backed film makers in China who make dramas and movies with historical figures in them and they deliberately write stories using them to make them look bad, to reinforce the anti-imperial sentiment/propaganda based on which the communist revolution happened... My guess is that this series is one of them cause this is the one which portrays Emperor Qianlong the worst... Kudos to the actors though... They are awesome...

@@AnoopKammaran Historically , this emperor was not a great person . He punished two of his sons because he was sad about empress Xiaoxian dying ...had an affair with a married woman . Used to punish officals without judgment. Some guy talked good about Empress Nara long after she was dead and he killed that guy. He committed many tyranny against many tribes etc. Empress Nara is portrayed as evil mostly because ...well....whoever defied their royal husband are always portrayed as a questionable woman throughout history( eg : Anne Boelynn) . It may have a communist backup or whatever but this drama is pretty close to history. Xiaoxian probably was not evil ...none of the concubines were probably evil ..but they were just normal humans who did nothing much . It's US who love to watch drama portrayals .
@@AnoopKammaran I read that the series was remove from tv by the chinese government because it went against the socialist core values that Beijing wants to promote... so I don't think this series had any special backing... both series are based on books, so it depends on the writers preference how each historical figure is presented

This is the purest example of how far gone the emperor was. Even if he didnt have his childhood love for ruyi, shes still his empress, and a good empress. He not once asked if she was okay nor did he worry about her after the attempt. So sad how far his character fell due to the bad influence of those around him

At this point, I think we all would agree that Ling Yunche was better off dying having saved the royal family--it would have kept his honor and Ruyi's as well. I always skip over the painful arc of Ling Yunche's persecution and right into the hair-cutting episode so Ruyi can rid herself of this selfish, barbaric, out-of-control man 😢
Yeah honestly i think he would be better off dead here. Setting merits by saving the empress and a royal heir then he would probably got a honourable burial with his family awarded or something. But then it just had to end like that.... Ling yunche is too good for how his life ended

For the story line it would have been better if he never met the witchy consort. [Ling] his life would have been so much easier.

Because she is Ling's mother. If she's not related then a whole 9 generation would be killed.
Ling’s mom was accused of performing voodoo cursing, not straight up killing. And a key thing too is Ling having been basically groomed from the start by the emperor himself. The whole idea of the 9 generations punishments is it’s punishments for high treason against the emperor, and it’s to prevent relatives of the charged from rebelling or joining enemies in response to the charged being persecuted. So in that light, one, Ling’s mother doing voodoo is due to jealousy of the empress rather than to challenge the emperor’s authority, and two, as long as Ling, who has the most power in her family, is under the emperor’s control, Ling and her other relatives are not gonna try to avenge the mother. That’s why Ling’s punishments is taking away her child but still keeping her around - as long as Ling thinks she can still regain/remain in power, she and her family will be under the emperor’s control without risk of any actual treason. So in truth the “9 generations” thing is rarely fully implemented (or at least to that degree, more often it’s within a single household), and more used as scare tactics. It’s the “default” punishment in the books, but the emperor is the prosecutor and judge, and can choose to interpret both the case and the law however he wishes to.

Empresses in the palace is the prequel story. it follows zhen huan, the empress dowager, when she was young. you even get to see her meet and adopt the emperor from this series when he was still a little boy. it really changes how you view her in this series. Story of Yanxi palace follows the story of consort Ling, but it is told through a different perspective and historical take. ling is the successful plucky protagonist, and ruyi is an evil wicked woman in it.
everything is available on youtube, but is being translated by a small dedicated group, so some of the later episodes havnt been done yet, however all these series are 60+ episodes, so there is plenty to watch before you need to worry about that.
Ruyi has much more serious undertones than the other 2 though. they allow themselves to be silly sometimes. ruyi did in the beginning, but gets darker and darker till nothing is left but mourning

I really love Chinese dramas but this tendency to choose actors who look alike. just to confuse us? I had to watch the scene at least 5 times in order to identify who had wanted to kill the prince, not to mention the identical hairstyles and clothes which do not help.

既是寫小說，作者還當警悌，如果要設身處地進入那拉氏的內心世界，少把自己現代觀念代入。
雖然，在我們小說創作者中，有〈角色是作者內心的投影〉說法。但有含混被曲解的危險。
畢竟，你寫的是那拉氏，不是自己。
在最大程度上跳脫自己，較可能進入角色。
雖然，比起〈甄嬛〉，〈如懿〉是更用心更深刻。
但要以更嚴標準看，我的一位朋友寫宋慶齡與孫中山，上述問題就不會發生。
不是说原著是架空的吗？再说剧里早期如懿就表现出对西方理念有兴趣（从洋画师那里了解西方的一夫一妻制，虽然后来在乾隆那儿碰壁，但也只是不再与他讨论而已），在那之后或许又跟画师聊过或看过有关书籍也不是没可能。而且虽是十八世纪的中国妇女，但能进宫还当上皇后肯定有不错的教育，况且人设就是饱读诗书、博学多才的，还是个非常感性细腻的人，能有自己独立的价值观我觉得并不突兀。而且虽然时代背景会束缚人的思想，但也不是没有思想超前的人存在，我认为小说里只要前后逻辑跟得上就行。而且真的要细说的话，其实如懿这种自由的教育观不是很像道家的“无为而治”，“顺其自然”吗？
