Nice job with the video and explaining why . I put them on my Street Glide and my Heritage . Works really well. No more dripping oil after a long ride.
Great video Paul. The catch can is on my "winter" upgrade list now. Appreciate the time you took to make the DIY video. Ride Safe!
Your very welcome. I’m glad I could help.
Great video. Great job at details and helping viewers understand with great detail.
I run the DK Custom external breather filter, wasn’t aware of an actual catch can! The filter does a pretty good job but the can would be easier to maintain. Well done man.
Nice video Paul, the breathers work, been doing this on my Twin Cams since 2001.
I’m glad I did it. I needed it back on my 2012 RGC but never got around to it and well, I traded that bike so it was someone else’s problem now. But this one might stick around for a little bit. Thanks for watching. Deuces ✌🏼
I like the way you explain. very informative thanks
Your welcome. Deuces ✌🏼
Definitely a step by step install. Highly appreciate you for doing that, every video I've saw said "step by step install" however they don't show nor explain the need for tapping the spacer nor the bango bolt. So thank you sir!
Your very welcome Rafael and thank you for watching. Deuces ✌🏼
What's the size of the tap?
Great install! Slow and deliberate explanation is exactly what I needed!
Your welcome. Thanks for watching! Deuces ✌🏼
Where did you get that
Excellent video! Super clean install. I will be putting this kit on my RGL M8.
Great. Let me know if you have any questions. You can find me on Instagram @ paulontherun_81. Deuces ✌🏼
Good video, Thanks!
Just got my EBS for my Trike. After watching your video, I'm out to the shop for the install. Thanks Paul .Ride Safe....
Glad I could help. If you do have any questions just let me know. I typically see these post right away. Deuces ✌🏼
Great video and content , well explained and filmed
Nice job Paul!! Great explanation and video! Just put one on mine when I had it rebuilt…
Really great how to video young man.
Great video! Thanks. We've shared it on our CZcams and also an excerpt of it on TikTok.
Awesome. Thank you very much.
Great video you explain this simply , also a shout out to Duane at DK customs for your time and efforts getting me the right kit . I’ll install and update you both . My AC is just slightly different solid mount with no spacers .
I’m glad we could help. If you have any questions while doing the install feel free to hit me up. I usually can reply fairly quickly. Look me up on instagram @paulontherun_81 to send a direct message if you need to. Deuces ✌🏼
Excellent instruction. Thanks.
Helluva vid bro good job
Thank you very much, Paul, Excellent video!!
Your very welcome
Very well done video
Thanks
Very detail n thought out video. Thank you for such a great video Paul.
Your welcome. Thanks for watching.
Have you done other breather kit besides AC?
@@paulson9616 I have not. I've only done this one.
@Paul On The Run I got my ac external breather done last week n some discussing dipstick on transmission vent cover breather kits. I wonder dobi need to do more than AC?
@@paulson9616 I'm not to sure but I have a buddy that vented his primary but I'm pretty sure that's unrelated to the air cleaner.
Great video bro 👍
Excellent video, about to do the same.
Thanks I'll be doing this on my 12 Road Glide 👍
clever mounting spot for the can.
Nice video bro! I’ll be ordering one for my Road Glide
Thanks and awesome!
Good job!
Awesome job with this Paul. You made it look easy. I was looking at DK Customs when I 1st got my M8 RG. I had EXTREME blow by where the oil actually ruined one of my wife's shoe. I was so ready to get rid of the bike because of this issue. Thought maybe harley over filled the oil when the 1000 mile service was done, but it wasn't. I changed to Amsoil it stopped. Didn't have an issue again. (28,000 miles) So weird. Not sure if that's what fixed it or not. But I just put Amsoil in it now on. Lol
I totally get it. That first sight of oil dripping from your air cleaner doen’t exactly make you feel warm and fuzzy inside with the bike. This sure has helped. I’m close to 1k miles since the install and my air cleaner is bone dry!!
Awesome video! You made this look real easy and DK Custom Products looks like they make a great product!
Thank you. It wasn’t too hard at all and they do have a great catch can. It’s already doing what it’s advertised to do! Deuces ✌🏼
Hello, I didn't use a catch can instead I used a filter element, Both work great I figure. The big question everyone wonders before doing this is; "will this make any difference over the stock EPA setup?" I can tell you I ran my harley for years breathing into the intake. The throttle body and backing plate and filter were always a mess, Also, when removing the heads for any type of work the pistons were loaded with carbon and so were the combustion chambers. As for the engine running, the tune would be perfect for the first thousand miles or so and then it would always start to drift as the chambers would load up with carbon. Once I went to external breathing I ran the bike for over a year and had to remove the exhaust for transmission work at one point and had to remove the throttle body for an intake leak and I can tell you the intake and exhaust runners were spotless! I scoped the combustion chambers through the spark plug holes and there was almost no carbon on the piston crowns! Also, the bike stayed in perfect tune until I got an unrelated and common intake leak. External breathing works! Period!
That’s awesome and good information to know. Thanks. Deuces ✌🏼
Good video my friend…
Thank you
there is a product for tapping ,called rapid tap , WD is ok for aluminum but if your working on steel or SS use the rapid tap .
Badass wonder if it can be used I. A Twin cam 2009 Dyna 🧐👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼✊🏼
Question - why not RTV the small original hole in the breather bolts also?
Thx, great job.
Thanks for the video, great job. Question, do happen to know the sizes of the threaded hose barbs and hose that DK includes in their DIY Kit? Having trouble reaching them, so I’ll probably order a few on Amazon
I don’t know off hand. They do include two different sizes though.
Awesome! I'm getting ready.to put that same external breather kit on my Streetglide. Did you order from DK customs and what specifically did you order?
Can I drill holes in the standoffs that are part of the backing plate (all one piece) on a 2012 103 Triglide?
Hey Paul, really like the information on your video. Very helpful. Before I purchase this dk custom DIY kit, I have a concern > my standoffs attaching too heads are much smaller than ones shown on your aRlen ness air cleaner. I have a Performance Machine Jet air cleaner, they are much more narrow, i worry about trying too drill thru. Wish I could present a photo too better see different sizes of standoffs. Thanks for a great informational video.
Your welcome Anthony. I couldn’t say for sure but the guys at DK can really steer you in the right direction.
Thanks for the video Paul I'm got to be doing the same to my sporty, this is what really annoys me about Harley they should have done this in the 1st place.
I agree 100%. Although it solves one problem it’s only a bandaid and not a fix. Deuces ✌🏼
I have the HD force air air filter unit. Do DK have a kit for that? Or would the filter route be better?
What about the hole at the top of the breather bolt? That hole goes from the bottom of the bolt all the way through to the top. What do you do with that? If that is still open, the stuff is still going to go up through there, and into the air cleaner
Do you remember what size tap you used to make the threads?
Orale get down Homie, good video, I made my own just for the fun of it, it's on my channel.. thanks for yr video.. Cee U On The Road..
Question, what would the Harley Davidson factory have done if the EPA didn’t Exist? What would the engine vent look like? From the looks of the transmission top cover, it looks to me like they would’ve simply put another little rubber hose right next to the transmission vent and just vented the thing to atmosphere? Yup, that’s exactly what they would’ve done.
hey, Paul in your installation of the T piece going over the top and out between the cylinder heads will the oil push up into the catch can? cause in seen some going from under so gravity feeds the oil down, now you've had the breather running for some time is it working well?
It does push up. There is enough pressure to move the mist up and into the catch can.
So you ordered the breather kit and the drill bit kit from DK? Do you have link for drill bit purchase ?
How do you know the breather bolt threads are timed with the hole you drilled when they are tight and mounted ?
I don’t really but the breather bolts have a smaller outside diameter than the inside diameter of the stand-offs so there is plenty of space for any oil mist or condensation to push and makes it’s way out the stand-off barb thru the hose and into the catch can.
How often do you have to empty the catch can?
I made the same thing without the catch can, I just ran hose under bike opposite side of the brake rotor and let it mist away.
Thanks, good video, however, I’d pay extra if the kit included ore drilled stand offs and breather bolts
I probably would have to but they don’t offer them for this setup. They do have them for other configurations though.
can they make it any more complicated. i did this w/a couple of feet of tubing to a can on my stock cleaner for like 5.00 plus a can for 12.00. works for my M8 like a champ. no tapping but one hole drilled into the bottom of my plastic bracket
Yes, but yours is stock, and has nipples on the breather bolts… this is for aftermarket air cleaners… stock is much easier to modify
I have air shocks on my 2016 triglide...my passenger can really feel the bumps...any recommendations?
I have been using progressive 444 13". I have had them about 8-9000 miles and we used them specifically on a 5000 mile road trip and my wife from mile 1 could feel the difference. all throughout that whole trip she could tell the difference when we rolled over hard bumps. She weighs 100 and I 206 and we adjusted accordingly. I also have the Progressive Monotone front suspension.
Could you have installed the catch can upside down, right next to the "t" tubing, directly above and behind the air cleaner, instead of running a hose to the other side of the bike? The catch can would be upside down, but I think it would still work as intended.
Since there is enough pressure coming out, yes you could, however, also since the catch can has breather holes (vents) on top by turning it upside down you would just drip all the oil and condensation all over the engine and I still don’t think there is enough space. Hope this helps. Deuces ✌🏼
What size hose is that???
Is that the hose that came with the kit? I have the DK premium discrete but the hose is much thicker and more rigid. That hose looks so much better and easier to route.
It is the hose that came with the kit.
Would it be better to route hoses down lower as condensation happens ?
I asked that same question to Dwayne from DK Customs and his response was the pressure, albeit not crazy pressure, is enough to push that misting up and into the catch can. I suppose there is more than way to skin a cat.
Paul,
Did DK Custom say why having the hose routed above the A/C was better than just having the catch can mount down low? (Like under the front of the engine)
Not specifically. Other than aesthetics and preference. However a high percentage (on twin cams) route the hose below and leave the catch can dangling below the air cleaner but on the M8's it actually doesn't fit. You can essentially run the hose anywhere you want. I did consider mounting towards the front but preferred this method that was suggested to me by Dwayne @ DK Customs. Deuces ✌
Dwayne here. There simply isn't much room for the catch can on the right side of the M8 Engine. As Paul said, the Twin cam models mostly place the can right beneath the air cleaner but this is not an option on the M8 due to the larger cam chest. You can certainly route the can to the lower front of the bike if you wish. The External Breather kits include 6ft of hose. Some bikes produce excessive oil carryover... routing the hose up initially can reduce the liquid that reaches the end of the external breather system, this is another reason why one may route the hose up and over.
I have similar setup and will have to do the same thing. Is there a tiny gap between your cover over the breather bolts? I know you said in another post that it would still travel down the external breather. With that little gap should I fit in a little spacer to close off the hole at the end of the breather bolt? So it only flows through external breather?
On my particular setup I have two rubber o-rings that seal the ends of the breather bolts. also since I plugged the small holes that direct the blow by into the air cleaner it keeps the oil and condensation inside the breather bolt that will then start to flow up the hose and back down to the catch can. Hope this helps.
@@PaulOnTheRun Just received my new Arlen Ness Inverted and ready to install. Instead of plugging the holes in the backing plate, why not simply plug the original holes in the breather bolts? They would be cheaper to replace than the backing plate in case I would like to remove the breather set-up in the future. Is there enough air pressure to force the mist into the newly drilled holes?
@@jjw1033 I would imagine blocking the breather bolts could work too. Never thought of doing that.
Sorta a dumb question...... how do you know that the hole you drilled in the breather bolt lines up with the hole for the barb fitting? If it doesn't, the blow by isn't going down the hose to the can.
Not a dumb question. But it doesn’t necessarily need to line up because the diameter of the bolt in that area is narrower than the hole. So the blow by goes around it and up the rubber hose. Hope that makes sense.
I answered you from my other page. Sorry about that.
Nice job explaining. One question do you think the original hole on the breather bolt should be blocked off so the oil and mist will only escape through the new hole that was drilled?
??
Yes. I did block off the holes with RTV silicone. There is no misting in to the intake.
just incase there's no confusion...Im talking about the original hole in the breather bolts. Not the one's in the backing plate.
@@johnlariccia4721 still not needed at least not with this particular air cleaner. Blocking off the hole on the backing plate was sufficient since the original hole is pretty much at the same diameter and will just push back to the new drilled hole. If that makes sense.
What air filter is that that is really nice
Man I really did forget but it’s a knock off of an Arlen Ness I believe however the filter element I swapped out for a legit Arlen ness brand. So far the finish has held up great and everything works great as well. I think the model is called turbine or something like that.
Do you have to empty your catch can after a period of time? If so how long between emptying it out?
Every so often. I usually check it and empty every 2000 miles or so or even sometimes after a long hard day ride.
I'm looking into this mod, but I've got a 21' M8 114 with 1500 miles on it and absolutely ZERO misting in my airbox. I'm confused, did H-D fix this?
All engines will have some mist (EPA thing). The mystery is always how much. I had a road king 107 and Softail w/110 that didn’t mist really at all but I had a 2012 RGC that misted and my now 2019 RGS. Especially after I put on a different air breather. You may not have a lot of oil mist but all engines have condensation that will get sucked in to the intake. My main goal was to stop the excess oil collecting on my filter and dripping but now benefit from clean air. Deuces ✌🏼
@@PaulOnTheRun Thank you for that concise explanation! I think i'm going for the catch can. Love my H-D, so why not make it last! Thanks again!
Sooooo....how is the actual oil build up gonna be pushed UP the hose? Isn't the oil gonna just sit in the stand off bolts or drain back into the case?
There is enough pressure to push it.
@Paul On The Run cool. I've got the screaming eagle heavy breather and it's hard to hide the hose running downward. I'll do it facing up and around like that then. Thanks
Is there a video installing a catch can on a Suzuki M109R 2011
That I do not know. Perhaps posting on a M109R forum will yield better results. I know there is a huge following for that bike and surely some has done something similar. Are you having excessive blow-by into your air intake?
@@PaulOnTheRun
Drippings and excessive blow off
I just happen to be on your site and thanks for the tip I have a Street Glide just little fortunate
Your explanation was very well though thanks again safe riding
Did you drill the hole the whole way through the Breather Bolt?
Only until I hit the center bore.
Got a question for you. I think its going to be a stupid question, but lets see. The hole that you drilled in the bolt, is it supposed to line up with the hole that you drilled in the stand off?
Not necessarily. Since the diameter of that section is smaller it will still seep out to find it’s way to the hose. Deuces ✌🏼
@@PaulOnTheRun That's exactly what I needed to know. This will be my project this weekend along with the Thunder Torques. Thanks!
@@PaulOnTheRunI got into the comments on your video to make note of the bolt diameter difference and that I’ve had no oil draining issues through the banjo bolt and into the barbs. Great work Paul! One thing I did about a year or two after doing this mod… I added spring loaded hose clamps at all the hose joints as I had very small amounts of oil squeeze by. They haven’t leaked since I added them. Bike runs great and stays tuned. My pistons are pretty much shiny clean. I built my bypass from scratch and saved money buying the kit.
Exactly what I needed thank you guys !! Shouldn’t we block the second hole in the breather bolt to make sure it ‘work’ at a 100% efficiency?
It’s not necessary because you’ll be blocking the holes it would normally breath thru which are on the back plate of the air cleaner assembly. With those small holes blocked it’s just gonna flow back to the path of lease resistance, which will be the new holes drilled in the breather bolt and up to the new barbs that have been tapped on the stand-offs. Deuces ✌🏼
@@PaulOnTheRun make sense !! Cheers man
@@PaulOnTheRun hey ! Just finished doing that! Was time consuming but pretty easy!! One question: how do we know the new hole in the bolt will align with the barb adapter in the spacer ? If it matters. Thanks again
@@NoXQc That’s awesome Anthony. So, if I’m not mistaken the breather bolt in that area has a small OD than the I’d o the stand off. It doesn’t need to be aligned as the slight pressure build up will eventually direct it to the hose and down the to the catch can.
@@PaulOnTheRun that what I thought! There is little room between the bolt and spacer so the build up will eventually go through the hose! I set mine up downward to help with gravity too and directed it in front ! I will definitely share your video on forums
aren't you worried about the rtv sealant getting sucked into your intake? I don't think I'd be comfortable knowing there's a possibility that could happen
You know I haven’t given that part much thought but I’m betting if applied correctly, meaning it was properly cleaned, and from what I know on prior experience the RTV shouldn’t even budge towards the intake.
Why so big of a hole and barbs when the original hole was so tiny. You could go with duck a smaller hole, hose, tap etc???
Would it be better to run the hose down instead of up like you did or does it matter?
It doesn’t matter. There is enough pressure to push it up. It’s just a matter of preference and how to route it to its end destination.
@@PaulOnTheRun thank you sir I'm fixing to install one on my 2019 breakout and I really rather do it like you have yours then run it down in the way of the motor. Every tip helps. Have a good day sir

Should you wait for warranty expiration first?
You can but not really sure if or how this could void warranty.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Does it hurt the hose if it touches the heads?
These rubber hose are typically made to withstand the heat. With that said I haven’t seen any damage in the 7-8k miles since I’ve installed it.
Great video. I know you are promoting DK Catch can but if you routed a longer hose to underneath the bike, there would be no need for catch can to clean periodically. No more oil than it would expel (especially at road speed) it would only be a mist and not really harm the environment. What are your thoughts?
You could totally do that. To be honest when I clean my catch can I use a paper towel to absorb the insides of it but then toss that into the recycle bin.
It’ll drip on your driveway. If you don’t care, cool. I tried the filter, then a catch can. The filter under the AC was messy and so was the catch can. I put on a longer hose to extend to bottom frame height and added a filter. No dripping and the filter gets cleaned out at every washing. Oh, and the small breather filter is up high enough to not touch the ground in cornering.
A road tube works great on a truck, but be careful with getting an oily spot in your garage, and then your tires
@@scottmcburney8938 I use a tube that goes down the front of the cam chest and hangs ziptied right at frame level with a simple breather filter on the end. It won’t touch the ground in the twisties and any oil it collects gets washed out when cleaning the bike. Works great and leaves no drops on anybody’s asphalt.
Great video. Were you able to buy just the can from DK?
Yes you can! Check out this link. www.dkcustomproducts.com/4-stage-black-catch-can-for-external-breather-system-ebs-harley.htm

@@mohabens5469 really good. Definitely doing it’s job. After 1000 miles I pulled off my air cleaner and I can gladly report that it was clean as a whistle. Even the condensation build is getting diverted to the catch can. Working great so far.
@@PaulOnTheRun man!!! After I saw my air cleaner and saw how gross it looked, I bet that would be a great sight. I am working on installing an oil pressure gauge now, and my next project will be the EBS. Greeting from Cali.

@@PaulOnTheRun good news.
Ok, I've watched video 2x. I completely understand the installation process. My question is after drilling holes into stand offs, now a vent hole must be bored into breather bolt. How do you know the new drilled vent hole is gonna line up with new exit into standoff and into barb/hose ? After tightening bolt too head , no way of telling if new pilot vent hole is lined up with new exit? ? Please explain. Tks
The holes don't need to line up. The area where you drill into the breather bolt actually has a smaller diameter than the stand off so there is space between those two for the blowby to find it's way up and out into the hoses. I hope that makes sense and your configuration matches that explanation.
can i just vent the hose to atmosphere without a filter or catchcan ? I dont care about EPA and oil spill.
Sure. Just route it where it won’t vent to a tire, belt or brake pads and take into account wind blast and where it might direct it when rolling down the road.
@@PaulOnTheRun Is there any chance of dust getting in ?
@@khanibrahim5947 I couldn’t say for sure but you probably have a higher probability of dust intrusion through your air cleaner before it can make it up they the rubber hose. Keep in mind the end of the tube could get clogged up since it will be open to the atmosphere and that small amount of oil will collect dust eventually causing it to be clogged up.
I like to at least have a little filter on it.
According to DK website, the SE n Arlen Ness air cleaners are incompatible with their external breather system. I called them and was told you have to buy their outlaw air cleaner with their flat support bracket. What if I used their bracket with my stock air cleaner. Answer was no . I guess it wouldn't match up.The system with their air cleaner would cost over $500!!!!!!
Nope. Removed mine. Too much crap blowing out of the top holes all over my pipes, etc
Isn't the can upside-down??? It can't catch anything
It’s not upside down. The can is right side up. The hose leaving the air filter is positioned on top from the ordinary but there is enough pressure to push the mist because catch can is catching plenty.
The DK catch can is a bit too pricey for me
It might seem like it's a pricey but they are milled out of solid billet and the 4 stage filter in it does exactly what they are supposed to. There are cheaper catch cans out there and I'm no stranger to searching for price breaks but consider why they are cheaper before investing. The support from DK is bar none and take this video for example. This is a direct "how to" for the DK Catch can. The other guys have not put together a video specifically on their own product. There are those that have done the service of creating a video but that was on their own accord and backing. Consider this, use paypal to pay over time. You won't regret it especially if your air cleaner is spewing oil inside of it. If you have any questions let me know. I'd be more than glad to help answer them if I can and thank you for watching. Deuces ✌
It's illegal for a shop to install it, but you can do it yourself, in most states and get away with it.
I'd buy one if it was chrome
They also sell kits with an aluminum can that can be mirror polished for a chrome appearance.
Spend 40 grand on a new vehicle and then have to modify something to catch all the oil that it leaks , speaks volumes about the quality of your bike,
Ever notice how every vehicle manufacturer has an auto repair shop at their dealership? 😆 😂.
It ain’t the bike it’s the EPA.
That catch can is a bust. Mine fills up every other ride & blows vapors all over the exhaust & saddle bag. It's such a P.I.T.A
If I have to drill I'll drill my bolts for free and blow it out in the air. That or buy breather bolts. Catch can is ugly and more weight you don't need .
