  • Earth is a success story, a thriving world that has hosted life for almost 4 billion years. But, no matter how peaceful things may be now, a new age is coming for the Solar System. An age of change, destruction and evolution. A place for new worlds and new stories, but one in which the Earth has no place.

    • @Diablopray
      @Diablopray Před 2 lety +46

      It’s not sad it just is. It wasn’t sad before humans were here and it won’t be sad after. Nobody will be around to experience it. I know it might be sad to think about now but it’s something you have to accept. Life is a gift but also a struggle, at least it will be the end of suffering.

      Why is that sad?

    • @mjkittredge
      @mjkittredge Před 2 lety +10

      @@Diablopray you have a stunning lack of imagination, can't picture a future of vastly increased technological prowess and scientific understanding that allows us to survive all these foreseeable events? We're barely a hundred years into the modern human era of advanced technology and we're already a space-faring species. The coming decades could see the birth of AI that surpasses human intelligence. Some humans will leave earth and live elsewhere.

    • @Diablopray
      @Diablopray Před 2 lety +22

      @@mjkittredge Lol, you’re incredibly naive son. Regardless of how far our advancements go, we won’t escape the end of our universe. Eventually dark energy will split even the most microscopic particles. If you think that somehow a machine will be able to survive the end of our universe, let alone biological life, then you are wrong. There is an end, and that is ok. Accept it, it’s not a bad thing.

    • @Diablopray
      @Diablopray Před 2 lety +8

      @@mjkittredge Also, the end of human life could be tomorrow, it could happen at any time. We probably will be the cause our own demise in the end anyways without the help of a supernova, solar burst, or a meteor. If you think that AI will agree with us, and not form it’s own separate agenda that we can’t even begin to understand, then you are the one lacking imagination. For all we know, AI will consider life a meaniningless suffering that must end. Whether it sympathizes with us or not, we have no idea what it will do if it can truly think on its own. It may even think it is doing us and other life forms a favor by wiping us out, or maybe it sees us and other life as a threat and comes to the same conclusion. We have no idea what will happen, but the weight is stacked against us. Biological life cannot travel at the speed of light regardless of how far technology goes. It’s cool that you like to think we can and we will go on, it’s just not reasonable.

I'm majoring in molecular bio and that's sort of the career path I think I'll take, but I've always been a space nerd. I get goosebumps thinking about the grand spectacle of the reality we're in. You're clearly making content for people like me, and I thank you for it.

I am somewhat of a space nerd but more on the theoretical and philosophical side of things. You teach me about the closer, more factual side of things and I on my own like to think about things like multiple universes and how they could correlate, if black holes pose opportunities for us to explore entirely different realities and things like that (again, completely philosophical, only veeeeery vastly based on actual physics. Obviously I try to stay within the realms of our physics and what we know to be possible but especially when it comes to black holes and things like that they often escape even the comprehension of many people. In fairness the original version of this video (which would’ve been like 45 mins) covered Triton as a potential habitable moon and so I originally wrote this with more than one moon in mind.
      However I then learned that while Triton may become temperate, it will probably crash into Neptune before 3.5bn years, so I removed the section.

    28:40 The white dwarf phase "incredibly stable..for trillions of years." Our successors likely will (appropriately) refer to that phase as the Main Sequence.
    This is one of the few videos that do a good/proper job of framing Earth's demise. Most tie it to Earth being engulfed during the Red Giant phase which is expected at around 2-4 billion years from now. But way, way before that (in as 'few' as 500M years), surface-dwelling complex life will likely no longer exist. And 'shortly' thereafter, complex ocean/subterranean life will also fully succumb. If that proves to be accurate, Earth's complex biome (the envisaged Earth we hold in our thoughts) is currently at the midway point of what will amount to a (paltry) 1B year existence.

    • @ShihammeDarc
      @ShihammeDarc Před rokem +1

      I think it'll be wrong to refer white dwarves as main sequence stars solely for it being the longest and most stable phase since in that phase stars do not produce energy and not every star goes through that phase either.

      @jaybingham3711 Před rokem

      @@ShihammeDarc It's just a fun poke at our use of language which often is quite biased. Planets can orbit a white dwarf. And notwithstanding the absence of fusion, white dwarfs still emit plenty of radiation and will do so for billions of years. Should a civilization arise in such a system, they may find it hard to believe stars in the fusion phase are capable of sustaining life. Whatever terminology they end up using, chances are it will de-emphasize phases other than the one they are experiencing.

      Yeah, but as it is in retrograde orbit around Neptune and slowly getting closer, it's far more likely that it will get close enough to be ripped entirely apart one or two billion years too early.
