- Mars is a fascinating and mysterious world, with stories of what was once a much more familiar world written all over its surface. Mars was once a water world, with oceans on its surface near the beginning of the Solar System. Today, we will relive Mars' history and legacy, as we examine the red planet's past, present and future.

Same. Glad I found this guy. My other go to sleep videos was pbs space time but these are much better tbh. Wish he released videos more often though.
Same here!
Oh my God Same it's very relaxing I kept watching his vids before going to sleep.

Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon.
Ah, my 2014 video games PTSD trigger. I hated that Strike so much, not as bad as the moon one though.
Recently discovered this channel, I watch similar content from Astrum, PBS space time and Spacerip. Although they are great channels, these videos are my favourite by far.
Narration is on point in every video, photos/images used are perfect and even the backing music is always accurate.
Literally watch these videos daily, some dozens of times. Please keep up the great work!

Something that wasn't addressed is the lack of magneto sphere, in order to retain any atmosphere that was terraformed, there would need to be some way to sheild it from cosmic and solar radiation. Could an artificial source be used or will there have to be some sub-terrainian work done to reignite the core? Anyway, great video.
Bad boy sea: phobos you're gonna love this 😂
Mars is my favourite planet (well if you're not counting Earth that is, thank you habitable world!).
I find Jupiter's moons like Europa pretty interesting as well, but they're much less known about.
Now that I've watched the video in full I can say I've certainly learned a lot on Mars! Whether full scale life on Maaaars 🎶 will ever be a thing is a whole other matter but its interesting to see what could be
My favourite planet is Neptune 🥰 They're both such pretty colours, don't you think? Lovely rust red, vivid cobalt blue. Such nice little jewls in our solar system
Your storytelling is great. Wonderful writing.
I was thinking to myself earlier this week that I hadn't seen a new SEA video in a while, and then came this masterpiece. Thank you, your productions are always excellent but this time you've outdone yourself!
This channel is amazingly high quality and appeals to me as a child with a dream and someone looking for escape with this world. Thank you so much. I'd love if you could do some more things on what alien life could look like.
This has got to be one of the best videos on this subject. You went from the history of the planet, from its formation up until the present day, all the way to the possibility of future colonization and terraforming. You've covered it all in my book all while staying realistic and factual and not devolving into aliens or other cringe topics usually chosen by bigger documentary productions for the stupid masses.
I felt a bit sad for Mars to learn about its sad story :(
Your videos are pleasing to the eyes and ears!! along with great content. And the narration, nice. Thanks for the videos brother
Finally! Another SEA upload!
Have you ever made a video that wasn't 10/10? I always look forward to these coming out. I've never heard the story of Mars told quite like that - amazing job as usual!
This is one of your best videos and one of the best as an introduction to the history and possibilities on Mars in general, on par with any on The History Channel or NatGeo.
Been waiting for a new video from you! You are my favourite space channel, informative, calming, detailed, it’s clear you put effort into your videos and don’t just rush them for views. Obsessed with your channel!!!! Thank you for existing I can’t express that enough
SEA - what about the dead core? How do the experts think we’d get around that (even if terraformed)?
Yeah I was thinking about that too
In terms of warming the planet, we’d simply have to keep inducing climate change faster than the atmosphere could escape I guess.
If we became super technically advanced, like far beyond now, we could even build artificial moons which could orbit elliptically around Mars, causing friction and tidal heating in its interior which would warm up the core.
@@therealist3495 That's.... scarily trivial to do.
For all our flaws, we are crazily advanced species. We went from hunting and making fires to mulling over the pros and cons of extra-planetary magnetosphere manipulation 😮
@@therealist3495 I was going to mention this point. It looks like this will be the most likely and easiest option.
This is amazing- BRILLIANT work! Much appreciation to you for sharing this with us🚀🖤💙
Something no one ever talks about is how they plan on creating an artificial magnetic field.
Exactly! That's because it can't be done, so they like to just bury their heads in the sand and call that "optimism". Sure, we'll go to a dead, inhospitable planet and completely transform it... why? Because we've admitted that we don't know how to make a 1.5 degree adjustment in our own planet's average atmospheric temperature. _That,_ apparently, is science fiction.
I had doubts as well but I've heard thru YT that giving a magnetic field is not as daunting as it could appear. At least compared to the other challenges at stake when you get into the terraforming process... "All you need" is to get a magnetic generator in the Lagrange point between the sun and Mars to deflect solar winds : this seems into our today's technological grasp. Now we need to get the finances for it witch is another challenge by it's own...
@@iamtheiconoclast3 even if you manage to create magnetic field what about low gravity and its long term effects on health?
@@zeroxcrusher As far as we know (we only have data from 0G not from 0,38G like Mars has, Earth has 1 BTW) gravity is not logarithmic but exponential in its effects on a human body. So any G above 0 provides exponential benefits to humans. As 0,38 is almost 40% that of Earth we should be fine. To "feel" like on Earth you just wear weighted clothing. But who wants to do that when you can actually jump like Michael Jordan in his prime without effort! The only thing completely unknown would be how human fetuses would develop in anything lower than 1G. Would they be fine or not? Even for that there's a solution - spinning (slowly of course) premises with a large enough diameter to house the newly expecting mothers.

No matter how hard or perilous this seems, it still puts a smile on my face.
I think one thing that most should keep in mind, is that we are entering a new age of exploration and venture that we haven't seen in a few hundred years. That means that loss of LIFE on these ventures are INEVITABLE, as the old adage goes "there is no reward without risk". We should not put down the efforts that are being made on our behalf to save and progress us, we must soldier on and continue to explore while remember those who came before us.
i just found out about your channel recently, i’m obsessed with astronomy and your channel is vastly underrated. keep up the fantastic work! also just curious, are you a hobbyist astronomer or do you do it for a living? keep up the great work!

Easily a top 10 favorite channel.
Still need to restart Mars' magnetic field to protect the newly formed atmosphere from solar winds and the surface from radiations. I don't want to be tanned to death during my 10 min daily walk.
Yeh...the magnetic field or lack of one gets overlooked in many of the videos about terra-forming Mars......(.No offense to SEA, but).....seems to me that the terra-forming idea as it stands is more about exploiting resources ( and providing a jumping off point for deeper space exploration) on the planet, not to actually populate it with any significant number of people. I'm fine with all of that, but I think people are expecting this to be a place that we'll all visit and live on, but I don't think that is the actual plan, nice as it sounds.
@@tumbleddry2887 Mars will probably be like Antarctica. People go there to do research only. Some go insane because of the isolation, and nobody wants to live there.
Don't forget: there are also possibly ways to handle the lack of a magnetic field. One such way is a "magnetic shield" satellite at the Mars Lagrange point L1. While it would take quite a powerful magnetic field and we'd have to upkeep this satellite, it could have a substantial impact on the atmosphere and high-energy radiation levels of Mars. Removing a large portion of the solar wind atmospheric stripping would allow natural processes to build up the atmosphere without so much of it being removed. Another way we could do this is with charged superconducting rings across the planet used for storage and energy transport. High energy radiation reduction would help with human colonization and might open up more options for the kinds of life we could bring to the planet!
Realistically though, that's hundreds of years away at the very least right?
@@CataclysmicDuck The amount of energy needed to create a planetary magnetosphere, even one as small as what Mars requires, is absolutely staggering. You would very likely need dozens of satellites powered by a network of reflector satellites. The reflectors could also help warm up the planet. Technically we could automate the creation of these types of satellites today and launch them into orbit, but we seem to have more important things to do at the moment like burn oil, hoard wealth and genocide each other.
@@snowballeffect7812 Here's to 2021 and hoping that the US can recover ❤
@@CataclysmicDuck Indeed. Something like this would require international cooperation, though. Mars belongs to everyone.
The solar striping of atmosphere on Mars is geologically slow process. Per Nasa data the current atmosphere of Mars is in equilibrium with the solar striping, so even a practically dead, geologically inactive, magnetic field missing world is capable of producing enough atmospheric gasses to cover up for the solar striping. That means the magnetic field is not needed at all to create and maintain atmosphere on Mars - although creating Earth kind of atmosphere, in terms of exact chemistry and in terms of mass, will last several centuries. Magnetic field isnt needed to protect from radiation either, because the atmosphere is the greatest shield against that too. On Earth and in future on Mars.
I love your work! Please keep making these amazing thought provoking videos!
Your work is sublime. Please keep it going!
Honestly, mars has a pretty windy landscape along with Phobos and Deimos as it’s moons.
You know, I've thought a lot about the idea of terraforming Mars and how many methods there really are to attempt it and I've honestly come to the conclusion that it's a crazy enough idea that it may actually work. But it'll take thousands of years at the absolute minimum so it will definitely involve playing the long game.
Very nicely made documentary, I learned new things about Mars. Thank you very much!
Excellent work! Really enjoyed this.

I’ve always wondered why we believe we can terraform mars. Even after we are able to produce an earth like atmosphere, the lack of a magnetosphere would just allow the sun to erode the atmosphere away. Am I missing something in this thought?
Love your channel btw.
Agree, producing a magnetic field to deflect the solar winds would be imperative to prevent the erosion of the terraformed atmosphere and to reduce harmful radiation exposure to any organic life, human or plant life.
