I know that story before and I watched it on the news. It is very sad considering that some parents of the dead students cannot accept their child has died that they make them lie on the beds as they believed they just sleeping. Even the teacher, who witnessed her students suffering from agonizing abdominal pain and slowly succumbing from the suspected poison, cannot interviewed properly due to shock and continously sobbing non-stop.
They made the theory of the improper making of cassava desserts as the culprit. But after thorough investigation of the police, it was revealed that a rat poison that has been in the kitchen of the cassava maker accidentally tainted in the mixture of the dessert before baking. Thus, making the students who ate the dessert , quickly experience the poisoning.

Choy i remember it was a pesticide called sevin, can we call this sensationalism or misleading, done for more money? I doubt that they didnt dug deep enough info. , to conclude that it was the cassava was the cause.
Cassava actually contains cyanogenic compounds which is what makes it bitter at times. Here in Malawi where I live we like eating them raw as a snack, a gamble really 😅.

My mom told me that planting Cassava up-side-down and plantingbitvdiring the rainy season adds to the poison content in the cassava. Im not sure if it's true.
@@dolores9276My grandma told me that also..The older stalk (near the plant base usually darker brown) should be planted on the ground not the young ones near the leaves. And also if you cut a cassava and it's flesh have some pink blemish, it's poisonous.

I remember that incident..it was in iloilo but the true cause of their death is the chemical fertilizer that the lady mistook as sugar...sad😢
If that story you talked about was tragedy happened in Mabini, Bohol in 2005, there were almost 90 died of food poisoning, and that was because of a pesticide which was mistaken as flavor enhancer.

As a son of farmer and taga bukid. Ms. Abi, thre are different varieties of cassava, yung ibang klase nakamamatay tlaga lalo na yung tinatawag na rayun (rion?). Ang hirap i-explain o i-differentiate /describe yung itsura ng dahon katawan at pati yung skin ng root crop mismo iba2x kasi mahabang story na. Actually pwede syang kaining hilaw basta yung variety na dilaw yung laman.bMay iba na pwedeng kainin, meron ding hindi. Pero to make sure that it is safe ms. Abi, after peeling the skin off dapat po kinikiskis ng blade ng knife yung cassava mismo. Yung parang nag pipeel ka lng ng ginger gamit kutsara. Yung ibang Province pinipiga nila bago niluluto.

Hmmmn, kinakain pa nmin to ng fresh/ hilaw sa probrinsya nmin 😅. Wala nmn akong ma experience or nbblitaang nfofood poison. There might be some cyanide on it but not lethal enough when you consume it.

The most important parts are: make sure not to undercook cassava, also don’t eat it raw. Grating cassava and soaking in water and rinsing before cooking helps remove the cyanogen. It’s better to use young cassava, avoid old/hard cassava with streaks of black.

i am originally from the south of india, a state called kerala. cassava has been our favourite food for ages and yet i have not heard of any stories of hydrocyanic acid poisoning in kerala. we eat cassava raw as well as cooked and also in combination with different types of meat. yet we are still ok. is it possible that the sickness was caused by something else.

It was not really because of the cassava.
Accdng to the investigation it was a chemical for poisoning rat that accidentally tainted the cassava grater. And some said, the cook accidentally mixed a chemical fertiliser thinking it was a sugar.
I have personally experienced pain on my tongue due to cassava. It was like eating spicy food but worst and the pain was sharp, that wouldn't go away.

From where I'm coming from we eat this daily... Just cut to bite size pieces, boil it ( make sure u half cook it, replace water and cook again), once cooked crush birds eye chilli, shallots and some grated coconut with turmeric. Have it with a spicy fish curry or beef curry or lamb curry. Once u experience it there's no going back. ❤
