- I've always enjoyed Animal Crossing, from the classic all the way on the Gamecube right up to present day with, arguably, the best game in the series, New Horizons. It being spooky season I thought it would be the perfect time to do a little investigation of the Animal Crossing Iceberg Image
This is my first commentary style video, so I hope you all enjoy.

ATTETION: Due to a Copyright Claim I have had to trim out a section of this video. At around 47:50 when it fades to black the next entry should be 64DD and sound like this:
"Animal Crossing was originally going to be exclusively for the 64DD. Which if you don't know, is a Disk Drive (DD) add on for the N64, it was going to be used to make much bigger games to keep up with competition or just add more content to existing games, like for example Ocarina of Times infamous, “Ura Zelda”. Anyways, in an interview from 2016, Eguchi, producer of Animal Crossing, details what the original plans for animal crossing were.“The idea for “Animal Crossing” began with the idea that we could use the 64DD to write a massive amount of save data to make a kind of game that hadn't ever been made yet. At that point, the theme that I considered was “playing with others”. The beginning of that design was that you’d have this RPG-like world in this massive field, and multiple people would enter, and your play would affect the other players.” According to Eguchi, he wanted to play videogames with his kids, but since he was a full time developer he often would arrive home late and they would be asleep. “I couldn’t play games with my kids, even though I knew it would be fun. From the beginning my idea was that, if this is the way it’s going to be, maybe there’s something we could do where someone in a similar environment to me could come home late and play, which would somehow overlap with what the kids had done.” (..) “For instance, say the kids were adventuring in a dungeon during the day and made it part way through, but then something happens where they can’t move any further. Then, some trace of that status can be left and then when dad came home at night he could use the information the kids left as a hint and clear the dungeon, and proceed further. I wondered how that kind of relay-type-play would be.” From here the idea of animals being in the game came from the idea that instead of the player being all powerful, like most RPGs. The player would have to use the power of Animals to progress. This interview goes into a lot more detail about the humble origins of Animal Crossing and all in all the original game concept is a lot different to what we ended up getting, I would love to see a fan or even Nintendo themselves make an RPG like this in the future but I doubt that will ever happen."

I was surprised none of the letters from Mom were on the iceberg. There is some very weird stuff on those, especially in the first game. In one letter, she says "you've chosen to live with animals, which I'll never understand... [...] Did you meet anyone special in that town? I want some grandkids!"
This raises so many questions. Is your mom racist against animals? What about them doesn't she like? Is it possible for humans and animals to have children? If so, why would your mom want you to do that if she doesn't like animals? Are there different villages for animals and humans? Is it uncommon for them to cross paths? What is the animal to human ratio in this world?
And that's just from one letter... There's so much other weird stuff in there.
Sometimes your dad also writes to you. And on father's day he basically sends you flower that symbolizes the message that 'I am still alive'

Maybe someone's stuck in there and when it rains the water gets stuck inside and there's a person/living being inside drowning
and the gyroid is what they put "animals" in when they die and decompose, but they still keep they brain and feel harm

For anyone who has played before NH, you may remember Dad sending you carnations on Father's Day. As proven in the past two years, he is absent in NH, so maybe he is the one sending the balloons? Interesting that the 7pm music in new leaf has a “negative aura”, I’ve ever seen that track as sad, I find it very serene and a pleasant song to wind down from your day. It was one of my favorite tracks from the the whole game and I can barely stand listening to any music that sounds sad.
I would never play new leaf from 7pm till 8pm. the music would freak me out, it always made me think of being chased (I was about 7 at the time) and to this day, I always skip the 7pm music on the acnl soundtrack
I love 7 pm. It's just so calming. And a lot of the time, I believe shops sometimes close at 8 pm, so it kinda fells like it has a bit of urgency to hurry up so you can get there before 8 pm but still calming.

I actually cried facing Ressetti as a child. My game was in English and I couldn’t understand him since I only spoke French at that age. He was just screaming and screaming at me and I couldn’t make him stop. It was to much for my seven years old self lol
I was just an english speaking 5 year old who could Barley read yet and didn't understand basic software requests. I had no idea what the word "save" ment and I just got the game for pretty colors.
aww that's unfortunate that happened, honestly his rage seemed so over the top that I found his dialog kinda funny. when you went back to it later did his anger still seem that bad?
Could you help me understand that? I always wanted to know why kids were so afraid of Ressetti.
Like, I get that he’s yelling angry...but he’s a funny little mole. Speaking a funny animal language.
I literally broke a window because of this
@@brandonchavez9924 Well I remember a time when it had been 30 minutes since I was trying to close the game but couldn’t because he wanted me to say a specific sentence (something like “I’m an idiot”) but I couldn’t write the right words because I didn’t understand English. I was so distressed that I started to cry and my mother had to come help me 😆
Watching this just makes me realize how much more is left out in new horizons. Don’t get me wrong it’s an amazing game in graphics and it’s cool how it’s so customizable yet I think it’s missing the lore? Like I feel like new horizons is just the tip of the ice burg for animal crossing and that’s why it feels off. It’s a great game yet you miss those fun quirky things that make it animal crossing. Like other NPCs, more places to go to, more complex dialogue. The gyroids, all the furniture sets, old music, Idk It just doesn’t have the same feeling I get when I play new leaf or wild world etc. not complaining because I love playing new horizons yet lately I’ve been missing that old classic animal crossing feel.
hey at least some of that is back now lol
i don’t really agree but 🤷🏻♀️
(the comment was also a year ago and some things have changed in new horizons)
Yeah, even with everything thT's been added since it's still not only missing a _lot_ of content present even from the beginning of the series(kinda dissappinting that the N64/GCN gane has mire going for it), but there's _still_ like, no added variation, character, or, well, content to just the dialogue and setting itself. A good chunk of the Special NPC cast is still missing, and everyone from Villager to Special still lack kind of horri ky in the dialogue department in general.
Edit: Okay, I don't know what my phone replaced with "horri ky" because I'm way too tired for coherent thought, so I'll come back to fox tupos and dumb mistakes later
the 7pm music to me has a sense of urgency to it. not a type of urgency like ur running for ur life but like being a child who decided to run away from a toxic home. like sneaking around through dark streets trying not get caught but still wanting to get as far away as possible as soon as possible. the song still has a sense of relief and calmness to it, like the feeling of finally being free
I get a sense of urgency aswell but it's more like a "It's pretty late, you better get inside" kind of urgency.

New theory
The bookshelf maze in Aika village is probably her mind, as books are mostly associated with knowledge. You are exploring the messy, mazelike, clouded mind of Aika, finding those good and bad memories (the paintings) of her past with her family. The doll with the axe is you looking at her standing there, realizing what she just did to those she loves and that she actually had many good memories with. The left side was the bad memories and the right were the good.
“The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing” absolutely BLEW my mind as a kid. The idea that someone could twist my childhood happy place into this dark and violent conspiracy story amazed me so much. It didn’t “ruin” Animal Crossing for me, but instead added this whole dimension and playfully mistrustful side of “what ifs” to a fond piece of media I had already been engrossed in for years. It was my introduction to fan-created works in general, and it started me on my own path as a creator and writer. Seeing that that fic is still being talked about and read makes my nostalgia light the hell up
(Edits on comment are only grammatical)
The weird thing about NH is that its actual *dialogue* is great and funny and super well written, there’s just way too little of it for it to actually stick.

One interesting thing I like to bring up is what fans dub "The End of the World" in Animal Crossing NGC. It happens on December 31, 2030, when the clock strikes midnight and ticks over to January 1, 2031. When the player saves and reloads their town after this event, they are suddenly taken back to January 1, 2030. This happens because the Gamecube's internal calendar only goes as far as December 2030 and Animal Crossing just loops the year 2030 forever. So that means players only have about 10 more years of Animal Crossing NGC (as of typing this, at least) before it truly ends and the calendar misaligns with the real world calendar.
Thank you so much for using NGC and not GCN
@@ronnieradon Yeah, I'm not a fan of Gamecube Nintendo, either lmao
If you had just told us that it was going to loop the year 2030 forever that would have been so creepy lol
Well, it's good to know their world will last longer than ours.
Are there any peregrine falcon villagers? I suspect some Ymbryne shenanigans!!
What I think went down in Aika Village:
On Aika's birthday, Aika got a doll from her parents. It seemed harmless. But over time, it started acting weirder. Eventually, it killed the dog and hid the body somehow, giving us our first casualty. When the family members started getting suspicious, the doll killed everyone but Aika. I think the room with all the heads in it looking at Aika and the doll could possibly represent a courtroom: the doll kept Aika alive to frame her.
This could also possibly be a hearing. Either way, when the event is finished, Aika goes to the seashore, takes off her shoes...and...well...ends her own misery by drowning herself. The doll has successfully ruined Aika Village and tainted its image forever.
I think the doll managed to pull this off by _possessing_ Aika, making her kill her family and hide the bodies. This would present very strong evidence against Aika, such as her DNA on bloody clothing or her fingerprints on the weapon. (Maybe the axe we saw the doll carrying?)
For the whole basement scream bit, I actually got Olaf and he said "did you know that no one can hear me scream from my basement" and before that he said he was watching Kung fu movies and then tried to recreate Kung fu movies

my theory for aika village is aika went crazy/was pressured to kill her family, realized what she’d done and killed herself
I think that makes the most sense.
Aika is definitely the doll, the doll has an axe, her family is missing, then red shoes depict suicide plus the room with the red doll, spinners and the shark tank. I think that room was either a moment of pleasure from an outside source (the statue) or the statue is just a guardian angel watching Aika suffer with thoughts of suicide
Going off your Aika village theory, I think maybe the parents were getting a divorce? With the room depicting the Adam and Eve sin thing, one of the parents could have done something wrong, like cheat. So the household was probably filled with arguing, showing the slow deteriorating and trashy look of each house. The big decision the girl had to make was probably picking which parent to go with. The mom might have been pressuring her to pick her because the father might have been the one to cheated. Maybe she ended her life because she couldn't pick because she loved them both? Not a solid theory but it's what I came up with haha, possibly a little right

Pretty sure Aika village is an allegory for Depression. Could be wrong, but I think your observations about panic and stress are on point. The houses represent the slow deterioration of Aika’s mental health. Getting darker, more cluttered, and more disorganized as time goes on (Aika growing up). This was cemented, to me, by the final unblocked room, where Aika sits, trapped in a box and judged at by her peers. A clear allegory for social anxiety and pressure.
That's way better than my theory!
alzheimer?
(yes im late) I think the suicide part was on point. To me, in the room with the shark tank and woman behind the doll and the rapid colorful wheels, relates to the shoes at the ocean. I think Aika was pressured by her family members (hence the statue of a woman behind the doll) and other issues in her life to commit suicide. this is a bit unbased tho!!
And the Piano with the eggs might symbolize walking on eggshells.
I'm thinking that aika killed a someone because someone else forced her to and she feels so bad she kills her self

What's weird about the "no one can hear you screaming in your basement" line is that it's NOT just the smug villagers saying it. It's also the peppy villagers (as shown with chrissy saying it, slightly differently). So for some reason they added the line to at least TWO different villager types.
And in new horizons no less! Where most of the dialogue is scrubbed super clean and positive.
There's also this weird piece of dialogue lazy villagers can say during their birthday party, where they tell you that when they were a child, they had a birthday party with a clown who mysteriously disappeared. There were, however, some suspicious noises in the walls ever since.

I definitely understand the "7pm negative energy" thing, the music sounds as if you're running away from something.
yea when i first heard it I thought there was like some secrete wasp boss I had awakened, or was gonna be murdered. it was such a sudden change in vibe...
i have to stop playing or change the time when midnight new leaf music starts playing, it actually freaks me out
nvm i literally mixed it up with 7pm
I guess I could see it. in my personal opinion, the 7 pm music gives me huge nostalgia cause when I was younger I’d play it in the evening tons
7pm acnl music always felt really bittersweet to me, like it's the music that would play in a cutscene where a character dies
There's a dialogue about Brewster's "Pigeon Milk" in Wild World. It goes like this;
"You're probably curious about the secret of my special *Pigeon Milk*... Sure, I'll tell you. You see, it's... Well... Yeah, never mind."
Just thought I'd curse you all with that information.

i ADORE your Aika village theory. I also think the doll represents Aika!! I always perceived it as Aika killing her family which just feels,,, extremely spooky. I think maybe it could be interpreted as her family being really abusive and eventually causing the story to happen??? Like "the scenery was never perfect".

Okay so hear me out, that wanted poster in the police station is a Jojo reference. The first edition of this game was released in 2001, the first chapter of Jojo part 6 was in 2000. Enough time to make a texture for sure. The girl in the poster has hair buns similar to Jolyne Cujoh. The story of part 6 was Jolyne in jail.
It's a God damn JoJo reference. Nintendo was ahead of their time
OMG IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
I saw the poster and immediately thought of Jolyne
omg how cool
I THOUGHT THAT TOO! IT LOOKED LIKE Jolyne lMFAO
Somebody needs to make an Animal Crossing iceberg book. Each chapter could be a different level of the iceberg, and there could be little subheadings talking about the things depending on what level of the iceberg you are on.
You know what, that would be an adorable little book. I like this idea, I might steal it someday if thats alright

Idk about you guys but to me, "Durge" sounds like a creepy murder.
Like a person hiding from a murderer is what I mean. Behind the corner. Then as the murderer turns that corner, and the metal clashing is the gunshots (or other murder weapon sound)

I was talking to Rodeo one time at a birthday and he said something about how when he was young a birthday clown went into his house and never came out.

Did Rodeo murder the clown?
Nah it’s implied he still lives in the house.

You've probably already gotten this but, resetti is actually in new horizons!! He's the one that operates the rescue service. He even says in one line "Calm down Resetti.." to himself after finding out that you dont have enough miles to use the rescue service.
Yeah but we dont see him. Also when you lost connection with internet there is a error screen containing resetti
Resetti's "forceful tone and constant attitude" was way better than what I, and I'd imagine many other children, had to hear in real life from their parents. :( The fact that he was removed from the series visually, even if not "entirely gone" is beyond upsetting.

There is actually a very obscure theory that the creator of Animal Crossing, Katsuya Eguchi was influenced by the 80's anime called: Maple Town. There are many similarities in Maple Town, such as the main character arriving to Maple Town in an old-school train, the train station having a very similar looking monkey who is also a train station porter, Animal Crossing and Maple Town both having a theme of settling in a town and the fact that both have cute looking anthropomorphic animal characters as residents. So I guess, this theory could be located at the very bottom of this iceberg? :P
A small correction is that Tanukis are not mythological creatures but yes a real animal! Tanukis are native to Japan and look a LOT like raccoons, but in reality are canines. Also known as Japanese Raccoon Dogs.
Here’a my Aika theory:
In one of the houses, you see the doll next to a crib. The story is about aika and jealousy. She was happy by herself and her family, then her baby sister is born. The doll represents aika, and her being jealous and lonely. After her sister is born, she doesn’t get as much attention. Her and the ace represents her hate against her sister. The dinner table represents her feeling pressured to deal with her loneliness. She wants to get her attention back, this is when she breaks. Her sitting on a stool looking at the shark with a statue behind her represents her being tempted to kill her sister. The statue represents her dark side battling with her to kill her sister. The tank is the ocean, where she ends up killing her sister, which she after feels guilty for. Then she drowns herself. The drawing scribbled out are her hating her family. (I think she may have also killed her family)

7pm def sounds depressing for me. It's kinda dreamy in a sad way, awaking your melancholy, loneliness, past regrets. When I'm completely alone at a calm night, freed from day's hustle, this kind of thoughts always pops up in my mind. But it's not completely negative, it's just a quiet and bittersweet reflection about life.
Only og’s remember when the fish never actually touched the bobber
I think Serena being a “goddess” is a translation of the Japanese concept of kami, which is a sort of spirit/god (it doesn’t really have a good English translation) that inhabits things like rivers, shrines, crops, and even ancestors can be kami. Kohaku from Spirited Away is a good example.

Who else is wondering how long it took to decorate aika village, To invite all those frog villagers, etc? (when i say frog villagers i mean aika village's NH counterpart, most likely made by the same player who created the og aika village, but since we saw ankha in the footage big marsh provided, we can tell the difference with the villagers from both villages, the NH counterpart has all frog villagers, no exceptions, except for aika among other human villagers, as well as a house with a lab full of frogs in terrariums, with pictures of frog villagers accompanying them, also if you are asking, as far as i know, there are not any froggy chairs in the NH aika village.)
The “Villagers aren’t animals” could be referring to a theory (that I personally don’t agree with) that the player character is hallucinating and the villagers are all normal people
Yeah, I don't believe in any theories, but some are like really logic and i kinda believe or totally believe
I don't think it requires hallucinations they could all just be wearing elaborate mascot costumes
@@swr3603
like fnaf in some way but instead of animatronics it’s humans and they aren’t trying to kill you
I think this theory also coincides with an earlier version of Animal Crossing where Zipper T mentions something about having a zipper on his suit, and to not go looking for it
okay game theory :)
i want a "martian" event for the alien broadcast. Maybe one day there's a tractor beam in the town center, and going in it brings you to a ufo where you can get rare alien furniture.
Gotta say, I love the idea of aliens invading the Animal Crossing world and all they want to do is trade cute furniture.
Maybe it'd be how you got some of the space themed furniture, like the captain's chair or ufo
There used to be UFOs in animal crossing (I think wild world) and you would shoot it down and gulliver would fall out
My theory for aika village is that aika IS a doll, with a dream for a family, and that dream becomes real. But upon discovering the dream is actually imperfect, with constant reminders of how she isn't human and the sins of the human condition, she simply wishes to go back to being a doll. And does so in the only way she knows how.
I just base it off the fact that aikas outfits are a reflection of the dolls, and how that could be representative of something
