  • Hey everyone! I'm back again and this time we're going to explore how to use Maschine as a midi controller for the Elektron Digitakt. This same process can be replicated in most DAWs and with most Midi capable hardware/software, but I'm using Maschine to take advantage of it's built in audio interface.
    In the future I will do a video on using The DIgitakt to control some of Maschines built in sounds, so subscribe and hit the bell icon to be notified as soon as I upload new content!
    In this video I have the Digitakt's outputs going in to the Harbinger L502 with my Blue Spark, output of the mixer into the line inputs of the Maschine MK3 which is also acting as my main sound card.
    Any and all support is very much appreciated and helps this channel tremendously. If you'd like to donate and join the community you can

    Thank you so much for this video. It's so much fun to shape a sound on the digitakt and play a melody with it on the maschine. Especially when you sequence it on the DT and put some triggers on it!

    I'm a mk3 owner. I use my Maschine mk3 to send clock to the hardware i own (tr8, JU06A, TD3) I enjoy it but want to get something else so I don't need my Laptop on when jamming hardware.
    Would you recommend getting a Digitakt rather than a Maschine Plus?
    If I get either a Digitakt or an MPC, I will still have the mk3 as well.
    Or i can sell the Mk3 and get a Plus.
    I like Maschines workflow and dunno how I'll get on with learning a whole new instrument, but is that a better option keeping mk3 and getting additional Digitakt or MPC Live?

    Great video! I was on the fence about picking up the MK3 but this video solidified it for me. I’m buying it! One question for you. Is it possible to plug in and control two devices using a midi splitter? I would like to do what you did with the Digitakt and the Digitone as well. Have you tried using two pieces of hardware? Thanks!

    i think its easier to import the digitakt samples into maschine and you are ready togo :-)

    Why have both? What can the Digitakt do that Maschine can't on its own? I actually bought a Digitakt instead of upgrading to a mk3, but regret it, I think. And any value I can find from keeping the Digitakt I can do with Maschine alone, so far.

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 5 lety

      I do believe having both is a bit overkill. Truth be told I haven't had the DT in months. I sold it because Overbridge still wasn't/isn't available. I'm more than content with my MK3. The only thing I really miss about the DT is the immediacy of it being Standalone.

    I couldnt change the MIDI Dest from "none" - it didnt give me the option of "Maschine MK3 Ext.' Whats up with that - how do I fix it?

      EDIT: You gotta set it up in Preferences, then it is selectable (if anyone else has this issue)

    Can you actually midi sequence the maschine it self on Digitakt, kind of use the mk3 as an instrument

    nice, I guess Maschine Mikro Mk3 pads will work through the software enviornment once Over Bridge is up and running on DIGITAKT ?

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 5 lety +1

      Actually the Overbridge Public Beta is now available, but from what I've seen is not compatible with Maschine at the moment! Hopefully in the future they will work together, although personally I recommend using OB with a linear style DAW that's better for recording audio.

    Can you use the chord mode with an external synth via midi out?

  • @shadowhenge7118
    @shadowhenge7118 Před 4 lety

    I kinda have a plan to use maschine as the sequencer with jam to switch patterns. Can maschine tell the elektron equipment to change to a different sound?

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 4 lety

      So my knowledge on that is a bit limited as I usually just change sounds right from the Digitakt, but usually you would send program change messages from Maschine to whatever hardware you have (assuming the hardware accepts program change messages.)
      Program change messages are basically sound/preset selection messages sent between different hardware. The implementation is different for each synth/machine so I recommend looking up the Midi and Program Implementation charts for each. Hope I could help at least a little bit!

    Nice...I have question. when you do that does the maschine still need to connect to computer? can it just be pair with digitakt?

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 4 lety

      Unfortunately you do need to have Maschine connected to the computer for this to work. This isn't a super convenient option these days, especially now that devices like the Mpc One are available which can perform this task in a much better fashion without a computer.

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 4 lety +1

      @Vicious Spiegel I wouldn't say replace, but it can do a broader variety of things. However, the Digitakt is such a specialized device with such a particular workflow it kind of shines on its own for things like boom bap, drum and bass, insane drums all around. Think of the MPC as a traditional linear song writing tool, whereas the Digitakt is like a tracker style beat machine.

  • @indicastrain4127
    @indicastrain4127 Před 6 lety

    So how would the connections work if you added a midi keyboard into the setup? Connect the keyboard midi out to maschine midi in..and then maschine out to digitakt midi in? See if want to be able to trigger the sounds from the digitakt and maschine while keeping maschine as the main sequencer

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 6 lety

      That would be the best connection set up! The trick of it is triggering the Digitakt from the the keyboard. The best way Ive found is to go down the the lowest octave on your midi keyboard and you can trigger all 8 tracks on the Digitakt like a standard drum kit. From there you should be able to sequence all the tracks in Maschine. Although, adding the midi keyboard may be more set up than necessary since you can trigger everything from the Maschine pads and sequence it that way.

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 6 lety

      I have a very similar set up in my Launchpad/Digitakt/Circuit/Sp404 rig.
      Launchpad Pro midi out to DT midi in, DT Midi out to Circuit Midi In, Circuit midi out to Sp404 midi in.
      I like to use either the LPP or Keystep for the controller because you can switch to the different midi channels very quickly with a shift+pad/key function.

    • @indicastrain4127
      @indicastrain4127 Před 6 lety

      Data Strain Music the keyboard would mostly be for playing melody/chords. I love keyboard mode on Maschine but to me it's just doing what an actual keyboard was meant to do. For anything percussion it's almost always gonna be the pads. I know the digitakt is capable of alot more than just drum sounds so I wanna be able to tap into all that a lil better using a keyboard

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 6 lety +1

      Oh okay that makes sense haha. Be aware though that the Digitakt can't record chords from it's audio tracks, it can only sequence 4 voice chords per step from external gear via its midi tracks. It's still crazy cool to load in chord samples and it's dope for leads/melodies/basslines except it doesn't support Pitchbend, legato, or modulation which sucks bcause you can't get a lot of experession. But otherwise it's a hell of a box.

  • @LouKrew
    @LouKrew Před 6 lety

    Does the maschine have to be plugged into the computer just to send the signal?

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 6 lety

      +LouKrew Indeed it does, but that's because Maschine is supposed to be software based. Any powered midi controller with 5 Pin Midi or a USB-Midi converter can accomplish the same thing. A good alternative which I also just picked up is the Arturia Keystep which is an awesome sequencer/arp/midi keyboard combo.

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 6 lety

      Hell yeah dude! It's nice knowing that to perform live, or just to switching rooms, that all you need to bring is a laptop and the MK3. Incredibly convenient. Built in interfaces are going to be the trend for all of 2018 haha.

      @@minutiaemusic Wait, now I'm still not sure. With a USB Midi host, I don't need a computer?

    • @minutiaemusic
      @minutiaemusic  Před 2 lety

      My apologies for the confusion. With the standard Maschine MK3, you need a computer no matter what. Only the Maschine Plus can operate without a computer.

      @@minutiaemusic Thanks for the response! So the Maschine Plus is probably what I'm looking for.
