You demand that he isn't a bad coach for having them play with such tight margins and slow, sure approach, but then say that with their talent pool, he shouldn't be playing that way. So he isn't using his team correctly, and is a bad manager. Southgate has one of best teams in the world and plays like he has a group of players from the championship against Manchester City.

The best England team i can remember were the ones managed by Terry Venables and then Sven Goran-Eriksson. The teams with Shearer, Owen, and also Hoddle etc were great.

When i saw us beat England at the euros in 2016 i really became a football fan. Even though it was a friendly it felt just as sweet as beating them back then.
also this Iceland team was just 1 match from reaching this years euros even though i agree we are not as good now as we were then, but we were beating Ukraine 1-0 in the playoff final just 2 months ago.

Southgate is the perfect manager for England. It's an average squad with no real chance of winning anything so he's just there to get to the semis or quarters of some competitions so an average manager that don't really know how to adjust games to win is perfect.

As someone who has been supportive of Southgate even after yesterday, I have no problem with him being criticised but I have three major issues with the SouthgateOut crowd
1) They talk about GS as if everything was going wonderfully for us before he was appointed and he's somehow ruined all of that
2) They use the quality of the squad to amplify their criticism (often downright negativity), this squad indeed has a great attack but an iffy midfield etc., it's absolutely nowhere near best we've ever had
3) So much talk about Southgate having to go, that it's impossible to back him, but then when you ask them who would take over and genuinely, realistically be an improvement, collectively they come up with NOBODY, every time, which says so much
