Make sure to watch until 18:11 ! Solar edge did come through in the end and supply me with a new battery, it’s just worth noting that, as far as I can tell, it seems the BUI without solar, is not a supported configuration. 😅
🤔soooooo, if I am NOT a YT celebrity, I presume I get fook all! Not to Diss ytou Cory, because I think youre great but.. really Solar Edge?
Came here to say the same thing. I'm really pleased that they came through for you Cory, but this feels like they only did it to avoid bad publicity and the average joe blogs electrician would be left with no help. Two or three of these installs gone wrong. Could send most businesses under
It sounds like someone needs to challenge that added warranty clause that isn't in writing. Things have to be fit for purpose for a reasonable time or documented within the warranty clauses surely? I suspect it will end up being documented with the bad publicity they have had with this video but it should also show an ammendments date and if you bought it before that date then it still would be worth challenging it for that kind of money.
Surley if it’s not written in the warrant you statement they have no leg to stand on? 💁♂️
As my daughter is a trainee Solicitor, she says “they cannot shirk their contractual
Obligations, it is bad engineering design and they should have to replace the battery due to its own poor software quality, especially as it never mentions not having solar”.
A BMS that doesn't protect the battery. Genius!
Unbelievable and it doesn't make sense at all ! Especially now!
Me thinks they need to go back to t he design stage on the bms. Not fit for purpose!
@@steveknight6298 agreed
Everyday is a learning day, but voiding a warranty for that is just ridiculous.
I agree!
When my SolarEdge energy bank was installed, the commissioning attempt by the electrician managed to brick the comms module in the inverter during a power cycle. According to Solaredge the comms module would “blow up” if the inverter was isolated at the external ac isolator without turning off the inverter first. Apparently the 400V capacitors would discharging into the electronics and “blow them up”.
They said “normally it wouldn’t be covered under warranty” if the electrician (approved by Solaredge) made a mistake. They were talking utter nonsense. The bricked comms module showed no sign of overvoltage damage. My own reckoning is that likely cause was corrupted software - potentially perfectly fixable with the right software on a usb stick and the right know how.
Overall I think SolarEdge customer support is awful. Technical knowledgeability seems to be “finger in the air, seat of their pants” and the result is situation that your’re in. They’re killing their reputation. A shame considering the hardware is excellent.
Since I got the new comms module, I replaced it myself. It was 2022 and I wasn’t willing to wait months for my electrician to come round. I CZcamsd the whole process including firmware updates. Success, and the battery has been fine ever since.
That warranty situation Cory is just ridiculous & you can't find any mention of this situation in their warranty statement? Crazy mate. BUT, great vid though!!
Thanks Mark!
Also forgot to mention your motor - man that's nasty. So glad you're ok, wow!
Thanks Mark, much appreciated
Yeesh my gut always told me that solaredge was junk despite the cacophony of youtubers pimping it - which is why I went my own design victron/Pylon - thanks for confirming it - a BMS that doesn't have a low cutoff point shouldnt exist how can that even be safety certified? I've "brute-force tested" the high cutoff and the low cutoff on my system to make sure everything is safe and both worked a treat. You know I wonder if the solaredge even has a proper BMS it almost sounds like it just has an active balancer. Cory - Someone needs to test if the high cutoff actually works as that's what causes fires.
You would have the same problem with any battery if the consumption exceeds the capacity of the battery and solar generation!! It doesn't "brick" the battery with other brands.
There is lots SE can do to prevent this the battery from locking out and causing an UVP ( under voltage protection) error from happening... its absolutely not your fault. I'm glad you got it sorted and SE came to their senses.
Props to your editor - did a cracking job with what I'm sure was some truly rough raw material 😂😂 On the whole warranty thing... If it's not mentioned in the T&Cs anywhere, unless you're doing something obviously incorrect/incompetent (which definitely sounds like you weren't), I doubt it would have stood up if you had ever ended up taking it to court! You cant just decide to add some random "extra" clause to a warranty after you've sold the thing!
If it’s not in the small print it’s non contractual. If it’s unfair it’s unenforceable, see the unfair contract terms act.
Just difficult doing anything substantial with a huge multinational corporation when it’s all over slow emails
@@corymac sounds like it's letter before action time.
@@corymac Get a solicitor to deal with it.
Whilst I usually don't advocate legal action simply cause even in a slam dunk case it's long, complex, and expensive.... sadly this means corps do get away with it.
However, in this case your £6k down, how many other sparks are now in the same boat? Maybe you could look at using contacts to collectively address (ie spread the cost) this as if it's not in their legal T&Cs, or purposely hidden away, then it's unenforceable within the remit of an unfair contract and they can't be allowed to screw over every spark in the UK simply because of that.
A well worded solicitor letter may be all that's required.
Hi mate. 👋😁
Just a note about MC4 connectors, there was a fire on a solar installation in Sandnes, Norway last year (2023) and I heard that the fault that caused it was trapped moisture in an MC4 connector. So plugging MC4 in the rain is just a big NO NO for me... 🔥
Good to see you Helgi! Thanks for the info! My father in law sent me that article when it happened! Looked crazy. The optimisers in this video have small plugs on, and are only removed generally just before mating, also if galvanic corrosion was to occur, and that led to a poor connection, solar edge optimiser will shut down the panel, safely dropping the voltage to 1 volt. So I sleep a lot easier 😁👍🏼
Hi Cory. I think you would have a good case to challenge the legality of their refusal to warrantee it. It does have to be fit for purpose and that seems to be a bit of a glaring error on their part. Unless it clearly states that this is not a supported configuration (ie with out solar) then that seems pretty useless.
What happens if it runs out when it’s not charging from solar? Or you have a major outage at night and then have a very overcast day and cannot charge it.
Why don’t you reach out to the black belt barrister on CZcams for a collaboration. He’s a great guy that helps people understand law so this could be a good video for both channels.
Best of luck.
Solar Edge BMS'es not protecting from overdischarge is complete madness? And it could still happen when solar's installed, too.
Exactly my response. Apparently it’s only when in ‘island mode’ without solar. But again, could happen at night!
@@corymac if it did go into island mode at night, what good would solar be?
I come across this with plyon tech batteries power cut...then flat batteries 😢
They draun at about 3 % per day so if you have say set low sate of charge at 10% (factory setting) batteries dead in 3 days if power trips or customer on holiday
Great that you highlighted this as it so important The warranty , good lesson to learn from when installing + . Great idea with the new van &. You smashed , filming with the iPhone ⚡️👊
Thanks for the video Cory and Co, like it has been said already 'every day is a school day '. Anything for a warranty not to be paid these days. It is nice to know that there are systems for flat roofs. I was planning on doing a PV system on my house (when I get the pv qual under my belt) and the roof on my house needs to be replaced in the distant future. Lovely to see that you have honoured the install in its intirenty. Not all here's where capes. 😊
If you’re not learning, you’re doing something wrong I guess 🤣👍🏼

😂😂 I remember writing that

So is the argument that you should never be in island mode long enough to deeply discharge the battery. Sounds like a cop out for a porrly designed BMS. Glad i didnt get the solaredge battery now.
If the BMS doesn't protect the battery in all situations it's not fit for purpose, regardless of how it's installed. Small Claims time.
Watch to the end 😁👍🏼
Most important thing is you're ok, car's are only objects at the end of the day and replaceable which you're not.
Besides we would miss your great content :).
Interesting about the battery only with Solar Edge, very glad they did the right thing in the end.
I've got a Fox ESS system which I did myself from G99 application (6.6kW panels, 5 kW inverter and 10.4kW/h storage) to finish except for the final AC hook up of course which was done by a local solar company who also checked all my work and was very complimentary that it was the MCS approval level. Still awaiting the DNO to come and remove my looped supply and put me on a direct feed.
Not all DIYers are clueless, some of us have the regulations to hand and stick to them.
I had to change every downlighters in my house plus do a substantial amount of correction work on the wiring because they were completely wrong (downstairs not fire sealed, bathroom open bulbs with unboxed wiring everywhere).
How do you find the Fox kit? I’m looking into it myself at the moment
@@corymac I've got the 4 x HV2600 battery modules with BMS and Hybrid Inverter.
I believe they do full all in one solutions if you want a 'neater' install but it has the extra cost and I wanted to maximise my budget which Fox came out on top at the time.
I've had no issues with it at all or the phone software, does everything I need and its fairly intuitive. Easy for the user to set battery discharge levels or type of use from home priority to export priority.
The guy who commissioned it said it was easy enough to set up, similar to many others he has used. It was his first Fox but had no problems.
Great video. Good that solar edge came through. Let us know the outcome of the warranty question 👍🏼. I discovered solar edge from your channel, thanks for being candid!
Thanks! They’re hopefully going to make it a bit clearer that the battery isn’t for use without solar 😃👍🏼
I wouldn’t trust a manufacturer that can’t design a battery that can properly manage its own health
I am not sure whether or not it’s an issue with an individual in tech support being wrong and stubborn, or if it’s the actual reason it broke
They have just bought in a Chinese battery, integrated software and rebadged it.
Edit I thought we were talking about the libbi the my energi ptoduct
@@corymac SolarEdge tech support are the most awful people to deal with.
The amount of systems we've had with comms failures and we go round in a loop that goes something along the lines of
us: "our system is broken"
them "no it isn't"
"yes it is, look at all these symptoms, they follow the same pattern we've had before on other systems"
"it can't be broken"
"well it's clearly not working"
"oh OK, we'll send you a replacement card"
"and who's going to pay to fit that?"
"you are"
"right, now the last five times you sent us that card it didn't fix the problem and we had to fit a new inverter, can't you just send us a new inverter?"
"no, the card will definitely fix it"
There's now a 50/50 of "we've fitted the card and still have exactly the same problem" or "we've fitted the card and the inverter has rejected it, we still have the problem" "please send us a new inverter because that's the only way this has ever been fixed in our experience"
Sometimes they send the right part out. That's around about a 6-12 month period.
If you install the inverters outside then after a couple of years you'll find the screws have corroded in place - not a problem with most brands as you don't need to take the cover off. Very big problem on SE because that's how you access the controls. So you have to drill them out and Helicoil them. It's bonkers.
battery wont be duff, it will be discharged below the point BMS can detect it you can manually charge the cells then hopefully when connected back to the bms it will bring it back to life
Massive fan of your channel if you’re installing a hybrid inverter, you have to have panels if you want battery only then that’s AC coupled. We are solar installers ourselves. I really appreciate your honesty and bravery sharing this. Good news that solar edge exchanged under warranty..
Fair play - honesty is how you build strong relationships with your customer. Sølid wørk!!
Awesome, new video drop to watch whilst working this evening, thanks Cory
Hope you enjoy! ☺️
Hi mate lovely work, on flat roof systems always think it looks much neater running the PV cable in copex between panels, as cable isn’t rated to be exposed to day light unless PV ultra, brilliant work though buddy
Bonkers warranty situation. Keep up the good work and look after yourself and Mrs Cory!
I still don’t know the difference between no solar and 2am solar offline, and battery gets to 0%. Sounds like a bit of bad coding to keep pulling from a battery below its reserve in these two different scenarios. Shouldn’t it have been attempting to charge daily anyway?
Me neither. I’m still convinced SE is a good system, just this one they temporarily dropped the ball on the support
Oops, someone has messed up when writing the program for the bms, even my home brew 40kw battery doesn't do that. be careful with mc4 in the rain, the slightest bit of moisture inside those causes havoc with heat cycling. interested to see how you do your ev battery install.. you're about 8 year behind the rest of us 😉 brilliant video as always mate
Sometimes the only way to get warranty is to put together a video piece. $500 on Video editing saves $10,000 on battery replacement bill. Good one!
Nice video, doing my first project with Renusol Console soon. Using concrete blocks rather than bagged ballast as I read a couple good comments about UV killing the plastic bags over time.
Personally would have binned SolarEdge over that nonsense but best of luck in the future.
Yeah that’s a nice way to do it! I think double bagged under the panels they’ll be solid. I wish plastic degraded that easily 😂😢🐢
I had the exact same situation with a phocos hybrid system, where the batteries would completely discharge and brick themselves due to bad firmware. We managed to restore one of the batteries in the system by forcing voltage without the bms straight to the battery just to "force" the battery to wake above the threshold of the BMS to essentially wake up the battery again...
good stuff! Thanks for the vids, lots to learn!
Glad you like them! ☺️👍🏼

Well done good video keep them coming
That BMS battery protection issue is madness. How can Solar Edge design a system with such an basic issue left unaddressed? Regardless of the charging source, the battery should have over discharge protection built in as a first line. There must be something very unusual going on to make them release a product with such a design shortcoming. As for not being very explicit about it up front, that only compounds the issue. Good you they covered you, but I wonder how non YT influencers would fare in the same situation?
That’s my exact worry, how would I have fared if it wasn’t for the channel, hence why I still felt the need to release the video and give everyone a heads up
Bin bags were quite trendy back in 1976, start of Punk Rock days! You’d fit in well!

I feel you Cory. Bad month, my dog died, had that stomach thing and I lost 3k on a job! Stupidly.put a Kstar battery on a Libbi system and they would not sync no matter the efforts. Cost me 3k but will use the battery at some point down the line...
8:28 I thought you were wearing a bin bag 😂
Corry, happy to help you revive it or fix it👍
Yeah you're right there should be a safety threshold, it should cut off and then reenable charge as soon as it can. If they didn't implement that in the BMS or maybe they did it intentionally in a way that requires a third-party equalizing charge. And there's nothing to say that can't happen with Solar either. You could have a few cloudy days in a row and it could discharge not attached the grid/ or generator.
If you're gonna be eating the price anyway since the warranty won't cover it you might as well keep it. As long as the cells aren't too terribly discharged they're probably just under the BMS threshold. So depending on the pack configuration and how easy it is to disassemble, you could theoretically get in there with an alternative charging method lab power supply etc. And it would be safe as long as they're not completely discharged and don't sit that way for long.
Great stuff! Keep up the good work! 😊 🙏🏼
Thank you mate!
Forgot solar edge had lots of issues.
Fronious battery systems all the way or victron 😊
Luvvly jubbly. Great video, Cory.
Awesome, thank you Nick! 😁👍🏼
"Dont worry, theres a future, you can be just like me..." oh my.... they've decided not to go on man... how could ya :P

Keep pushing Cory really good video actually and crazy the BMS seems to be completely hopeless at actually protecting the battery in that installation style.
Also that you didnt see this no warranty details anywhere.

I’ve had issues with them in Australia. We are having LG battery re-calls and we’re put in a situation where SolarEdge we’re blaming LG and vice versa. Takes a long time to get warranty parts
That battery sounds terrible. As you said, it should absolutely be protected by the bms.
It’s super unusual, that’s for sure. Do you have solar edge where you live?
@@corymac I have heard of some using them in the area, we are on a combination of Growatt MOD and Fronius Symo at our place.
Looking forward to the upcoming videos!
I had one battery where I wished it didn't do that. It was a cheap 2nd. gen 500w Chinese electric unicycle from 2012 and with low battery it could just turn itself off when hitting a bump. That was very dangerous. The unicycles own controller had already that protection but with a small difference. It wouldn't just instantly turn off trying to kill you but rather started beeping and leaning back more and more until you were forced to stop so I just disabled the whole BMS. I'm still using it and have replaced the cells once. It's been trough rain, snow, mud, ice, sand and everything between, including over ankle deep floodwaters and still works perfectly.
Ah, electric harvesting in home battery now, clever... here, Connected to giant Lake Michigan, is one of the largest hydrobatteries.. does the same thing kind of, using massive GE turbines.
at night it has massive pumps for lake water to be hilled up into it cheap using wind turbine farm and solar farms electric nearby (even up north near the canada border almost) and then drains it back down through the huge power turbines to make power cheaper.. profit.
That’s super cool, I’ve seen videos on it, and would actually like to make my own. We don’t really have the geology here for that unfortunately. I see it a lot in Norway

@corymac Glad to see SolarEdge standing up to support on this eventually. Any tips or tricks on using the SolarEdge battery with the Zappi? Because the SolarEdge is a DC battery it’s a bit difficult to get that and the Zappi to play nicely…
It’s not perfect, but you’ll have to setup an export margin on the Zappi, at least 100w over 30 seconds 😁👍🏼
Is it not possible to charge the battery packs using a dc charger to get some voltage back in to them?
Happy to see you're ok. That car looks like an elephant sat on it, like you were trying to re-profile it to look like a Peugeot 405.

18:05 - Ooooofff!! That's so smashed up! Glad you are okay! How did that happened, may I ask? 😳😬😬
Thanks man. Yeah it was pretty bad, not my fault either sadly. Probably best not to go into it too much on here though, sorry! 🙏🏼
Big up the Vivos!!
Oh no, it’s spreading 🦶🤣🤣
I'm assuming that with solar connected the low voltage cutoff for the batteries works as we think it should.
Seems like something that should be able to be fixed with a firmware update.
Shouldn't there be at least a couple of ways of protecting the battery? My garage Victron set up as a Low voltage cut off on the Victron inverter and then the BMS cuts it based on cell voltages etc. Sounds like a system thats completely not fit for purpose.
Enjoyed this one 🫶🏼
Which brand is this battery? I would steer clear if the maker hasn't built in protection.
So what happens if it snows or in a typically overcast and rainy winter? The BMS has one job look after the battery and anything connected to the battery if it can't do something as basic as low voltage protection I wouldn't let it anywhere near my property.
Your inverter should have maximum depth of discharge controls.... Sounds like tripe - are you sure they're just not getting a bit confused. I'm not sure how it could be justifiable...
How can they not mention anything in their warranty or installation guidance or installer information, what a cop out
I’m still waiting on an update on this
It's worth calling out that Zappi & some other chargers have a minimum charge rate. Therefore, generally don't expect being able to charge solely from solar if your excess solar is below 1kW'ish!
Yes! Good point to mention, I believe it’s 1.2kw for the Eco + 😃👍🏼
Nothing to do with the Zappi, it's the Charging Standards that dictate the parameters for EVSE state 1.4kWh is the minimum. Some manufactures follow the standards, some do not.
So, if solar is fitted and there is a grid outage for any period of time, what stops the battery from over discharging in that scenario?
Exactly. It’s a silly excuse
@@corymac I commented before the end of the video, it made me that mad! I'm glad solar edge did the right thing for you. But the inverter and/or BMS should stop the battery from over discharging and over charging?
Im addicted to this channel
You’re the best! 🙏🏼🍿🥑
Stick to Victron for a much more customisable and expandable system!
I love Victron, but I find it a little bit trickier when customers want that off the shelf, easier to use solution
Did I miss the Weight of the bags? But would be interested to know. Is it like 20 kilos per one bag or something? 20kg x 3 = 60kg per panel. Just interested how well they hold there on the roof? Any idea how they work during winter?
Solar edge = “Edgy!”
Lol - lookalike had me thrown for just a second
🤣🤣🤣 I don’t see the resemblance, but am always mixed up for each other
What happens when someone’s flat roof starts to leak and needs replacing? Can the tubs be moved about on the roof? Do you have to get an inspection to confirm the roof can support the weight? What about when we have heavy snow, that’s a lot of weight up there
We have to check the weight the roof can handle. But usually the older garages are solid such as this one. The buckets are easy enough to slide around with 2 people 😄👍🏼
I'd be more cautious about adding extra load to a solid roof than a timber one. Calculations are easy enough for timber roofs, but with concrete it is often cast in situ, with poorly placed reinforcement and inadequate cover to prevent corrosion. You just cant know how well it can carry any extra loading.
btw. If the BMS bricks the battery due to overdischarge, the battery can be restored to working order by bypassing the bms and charging with an external charger.
Disclaimer: You really need to know what you're doing if you're trying to restore a battery, otherwise the potential for flames and toxic fumes is SIGNIFICANT.
Trouble is, it’s the sort of thing I’d happily do at home, but not to leave with a customer if that makes sense?
@@corymac I totally understand. I was thinking of a hypothetical situation where you replaced the customer with a new battery and you ended up with the customer's bricked battery. "If solaredege had not agreed to the guarantee"
@BlackBeltBarrister I think you should look into this type of warranty problem, how can you buy a bit of equipment and void it's warranty if you didn't buy it with another piece of equipment. surely at the point of purchase it should make you aware of the unusual stipulation in the warranty. either way I believe this constitutes an unfair term in the contract and Cory should be able to claim on the warranty of the equipment.
obviously solaredge is the junk i took it for right from the beginning.
thank god the netherlands offer proper components.
I think your new camera and mic is a massive improvement hehe 😂
😂👍🏼
It needs somebody to take them to court as clearly it “ is not fit for purpose” what a cop out. Fail to see what difference solar would make to this problem, what happens on dull days in winter
That just sucks. Nothing about the solar requirement in any documentation? Then it’s not your fault and the manufacturer should burden the cost.
I bet the @blackbeltbarrister would have something to say about the situation.
Fortunately they came back and let me have a replacement, but it wasn’t half drawn out. People need to watch out for it for sure 👍🏼
Massive shout-out to the designers and specifiers of shed and garage roofs, who decades ago incorporated factors of safety for roof timbers in anticipation that one day an additional deadload of unknown description amounting to 500-600kg would be imposed on their constructions. Do you get structural engineers' reports for these kinds of jobs? Maybe you do.
Fall prevention is still required for work on this kind of roof and a manual handling risk assessment for bags of ballast is probably unlikely to suggest the method you employed.
Well done, though, for taking SolarEdge to task over their invisible warranty terms re the battery. Damage to reputation in this market is worth way more than £6k so that penny must've dropped.
The garage was built by the old village doctor, it’s sooo cool, massively over engineered, and even an old lined X Ray room 😂👍🏼
appropriate name, i guess?
No battery should be without decent protection, with or without solar, a product to avoid,
I’ll still use solar edge, but I’ll be careful to make sure it’s only ever installed with solar to be sure of the warranty question mark ⁉️
@@corymac yes I mean if the designers have made one great big schoolboy design error of not having LVD with individual cell monitoring which is super simple to implement them I'm sure they won't be any other electrical or software errors lurking to raise their heads at some random time in the future.
3 things in the DIY lipo world everyone has learned, always do cell monitoring not pack, always have a cell level LVD to save bricking a cell which if you don't have cell monitoring you could accidentally try to recharge which always ends in fun, and always have cell level HVD because if you don't, more fun.
And of course cell balancing.
Thing is the r&d on that is all done, mostly by trial and error over the last 10 years in the amature domain so costs nothing to implement as the far East battery company's have already 'taken' that knowledge and now sell ready to fit bms systems for less than 100 quid for 200a drain, the most advanced by jk

A bms that doesn't do what a bms suppose to do this was built by a genius
Lithium batteries have charge/discharge management to prevent battery damage and worse case fires. Sounds like garbage firmware to me or someone went with a cheap battery management option to cut costs. Also how did the manufacturer get away with hidden warranty clauses?
It’s beyond me unfortunately, as if I opened it up to take a look, that would well and truly end any hope of warranty
This was funny 👍
Aside from the fact that the BMS should have protected the battery - why does solar make any difference? What if you managed to drain your battery during the night ?
I’m not sure! Apparently it’s just with the BUI ( backup interface ) and no solar that’s apparently not supported, but I’m waiting for an update on this!
I’d swap the serial numbers over to the new battery and call them back to replace it
Stick to Givenergy in future, they don’t leave installers out in the cold!
I don’t know, they have their own issues at the moment 🤣
@@corymac what issues for £6000 you could have had an all in one system 13.5kW

Nice set up but what happens if in 10 years the fe!t roof fails and needs reroofing?
They’re easy enough to scoot around if needed 👍🏼👍🏼
Battery only installs are not warranted for off grid without solar? Because Solar on the roof would protect the battery in the middle of the night from full discharge?? lol.
Sounds like the best solution is trading standards. If it’s not in the terms and conditions then a warranty can’t be void and they will prosecute and get the warranty reinstated
Also under uk selling regulations not fit for purpose

I have a GivEnergy battery... It was creating lots of interference noise knocking broadband out in the area i left this off overnight during troubleshooting and it would not turn back on, it died overnight. This required an engineer call out to hook up a DC charger and force charge it enough for it to be able to turn on. right nightmare and put me out of pocked a few hundred quid
Giv energy AIO needs some serious looking at. I’ve stopped offering them until they sort their current issues.
