The Land Before Time is a 1988 animated adventure drama film directed and produced by Don Bluth from a screenplay by Stu Krieger and a story by Judy Freudberg and Tony Geiss; it is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall. The film stars the voices of Gabriel Damon, Candace Hutson, Judith Barsi, and Will Ryan with narration provided by Pat Hingle. It is the first film in The Land Before Time franchise.

what to say bout the "Land before time" film series ? well they made 14 films/A cartoon series that lasted 26 episodes & that's pretty much it so with that said when is Critic going back to the studio ? maintenance needs to fix studio

A Sad Fact: Judith Barsi, who did the voice for Ducky, was murdered by her father four months before the film's release. Judith was only ten years old. Her headstone includes her famous line in this film, "Yep! Yep! Yep!"

Yeah, very sad indeed. RIP to a very young girl. She was also in Jaws: The Revenge as Michael’s Daughter Thea. The other memorable role I could think of. Nostalgia Critic also reviewed that movie way back in 2011.
Hot Take: Littlefoot's Mother's death is sadder than Mufasa and Bambi's Mom deaths combined.
It's probably because we both saw her cause of death and her having to pass away in front of her son
The apatosaur scene from Jurassic World is a lot like that scene.
Littlefoot’s mother’s death was done on purpose because of Bambi’s mother’s death.
It also has lasting traumatic impact, since we see Littlefoot GRIEVING through a good chunk of the movie. Ending with the HEARTWRENCHING scene of Littlefoot thinking his own shadow was his mother came back. I watched the movie again and that scene BROKE ME I was BAWLING.
Littlefoots mother and mufasa dying absolutely destroyed me as a kid!
One thing I really wish they kept from an early cut was the timing of Littlefoot nearly giving up hope until his mother's spirit leads him to the Great Valley's entrance. This was supposed to happen right after his argument and separation from Cera and the others, not after they all conquered the T-Rex.
Littlefoot specifically finds the Great Valley by himself. When he does, he celebrates at first, but then he remembers his friends aren't there. So he turns back around and goes after them. A great character moment.
Once he's retrieved the others, they all take out the T-Rex to prevent it from finding the Great Valley entrance and preying on everyone who's already there. Then they all celebrate together when they realize Petrie survived, and Littlefoot shows them all the way home.
That explains how Littlefoot is able to miraculously locate his friends when they are in danger in the volcano and tar fields. He literally just comes right out of nowhere.
wow, that actually makes the similarities between this and Disney's Dinosaur stand out even more.
That would have made the movie better.

Man, even watching an internet review, I still teared up when Little Foot's mom died. This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I love how mature it was, taking kids seriously while not being vulgar.
“This movie doesn’t hand out its happy ending like candy. They make you work for it. Double shifts.” I love it! That’s exactly it!

Not only does it make you work like hell for it, but the ending being a "happy" one is SUPER debateable in and of itself. See, Don Bluth later said that the journey the dino kids take is supposed to be a metaphor for the journey to heaven, played here by The Great Valley (including having Sharp Tooth be the metaphorical Devil/Satan). And pretty heavily implied that the journey to the Great Valley was Purgatory...meaning that everybody, both the families in The Great Valley and the kids themselves, died in the earthquake.
Don Bluth did NOT hold back on going dark back in the 80s.

9:49 there's actually a sad bit of information that I remember Don Bluth recalled a few years back. The animators who worked on "All Dogs Go To Heaven" had a very difficult time working on scenes featuring Anne Marie. Some of them actually broke down crying while listening to Barsi's voice recordings for the character. Heck, Anne Marie's song "Soon You'll Come Home" was originally intended for Barsi to perform but was instead performed by Lana Beeson. To this day, he refuses to mention Barsi due to her death deeply affecting him.
her death also caused them to re-animate the sequence of Carface chasing her and Charlie with a laser blaster rather than a tommy gun,making it look out of a place in a period movie that had no sci-fi elements
I could never blame Don Bluth for not wanting to talk about Judith Barsi after what happened to her. At least the **** who murdered her and her mom, continues to burn in a deeper pit of hell than Stalin, Hitler & bin Laden combined
I always liked the interpretation that the old dinosaur that comforted Littlefoot after his mothers death knew he didn't have much time left.
He was already very old during a harsh time and would just slow this kid down, so he comforted him as best he could and moved on to find a quiet place to end.
This scene reminds me of my late father. He looked and talked just like Rooter.

I love how in classic Don Bluth fashion, this is a kids film that pulls NO punches.
It's a kids film, but it doesn't shy away from the harshness & reality of life & the struggles people (especially kids) face.
It does treat kids seriously & doesn't try to dumb anything down for them. When Littlefoot's mother dies, it stays on that, it doesn't try to hide anything from you.
I also did always love the scene with Pat Rooter's character too. It's honestly the perfect heartwarming scene after dealing with such a tragedy. At first you think he's going to be some mean old grouch with his first few lines, but he immediately turns into a sweet character once he realizes what happened with Littlefoot. The best part is that it really is just a total stranger that gives jhim that encouragement. That actually means a lot more than if it was from one of his friends.
8:20 Fun fact but the scene with Rooter was added in because they decided the death of Littlefoot's mother may have been too brutal and harsh for kids, so they needed something to soften the trauma, for both Littlefoot and the audience.
😯 I read that too. They showed psychologist the death scene and they gave their opinion so that when Rooter was added to soften the emotional blow
Yeah, If I recall Bluth didn't want to add it cuz he thought as long as the story had a happy ending kids could handle anything. But the other producers were like, dude... this is way too dark.
@@DSzaks Yeah about that... I saw this as a young child, and T-Rex was my favorite dino. The mom's death didn't affect me at all, cuz I wanted the T-Rex to win lol.
More dumb child logic, I was the only non-vegetarian in my family. My older sister liked the herbivores for that reason, and I liked the carnivores. Her reaction to that fight was "see Apatosaurus would kick T-Rex's butt", not, "oh snap his mom died, that's so sad". I think we were simply too young to understand the concept of death. Give it a few years, Mufassa's death had me shook.
@@nahor88 Its funny how these type of scenes affect us. The death on Land Before TIme, while my child brain couldn't really comprehend it, was so sad to me, like it resonated with me. Compared to Mufasa's death, it didnt rattle me. That being said, now I cant watch either movie and was low-key pissed of when they killed the brother from Big Hero 6 XD
@@DSzaks I think they originally thought that way about the Transformers movie, a robot genocide is fine as long as the kids get a happy ending how wrong they were....although then they over corrected and you had movies that more or less had the Simpsons Ralph ending..."I thought you were dead?" "nope!"

Here's a fun fact about me. This movie and Jurassic Park both are what inspired me to become a paleontologist. I'm about halfway through university and I'm about to go on actual dinosaur digs. I've founds some pretty cool stuff already. Someday I'd like to thank Don Bleuth and Steven Spielberg personally. Thank you for bringing back happy childhood memories
Almost the same story with me, becoming a paleontologist was my childhood dream because of these films. It's just that I couldn't wrap my head around biology, so I became an archaeologist instead.

7:30 Apparently this was added in near the end of production; the filmmakers felt like they needed an uplifting scene after the death scene.
And I'm glad they added it in because it's my favorite scene too. Any kid or adult can connect to this if they've lost someone dear to them; that's probably why this film, after all these years, still holds up
I’ll be real, Doug doing “real intros” should become the norm. Sometimes the skits just don’t land, and sometimes we just want to see Doug be……Doug. Honest, true, and from the heart, that’s the best Doug.

I like the skits just fine, but I really always prefer the simple reviews like this one.

It only just occurs to me that Spike might not have been able to hatch without Ducky's help. It looks like he's just laid-back and lazy but she has to help crack and discard the egg. It's possible that Spike's parents abandoned the egg after believing it to be non-viable, which would also explain a few things about his mental acuity (even above and beyond him being a literal newborn).
Fun fact: Bob Bakker, the Paleontologist responsible for the discovery that dinosaurs were endothermic animals closer to birds than reptiles, advised the filmmakers in how the dinosaurs looked and acted. It shows in how sleek and active they all are, almost like one of Bakker's own sketches.
I think the book was called the dinosaur hierarchies. What's crazy is I read it as a kid (born in 1983) but didn't fully grasp it until maybe middle school; and that book is about 40 years old.

It's a coincidence you mention that, a few days ago I've seen an animation cel of Littlefoot, Ducky, and Petrie watching Spike sleeping in the nest where the latter was hatched, with Ducky luring Spike with berries.
Plus the trailers and TV ads do have some scenes not in the movie (Ducky making funny faces to distract Sharptooth, Littlefoot saying "Now we'll ALWAYS be together!" etc).
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

My grandmother would sing "If we hold on together" by Diana Ross to me it was a sweet lullaby to me. But when dementia started to set in she couldn't remember the words so i'd sing it to her and when i go to her grave i sing it to her. Miss you Nana ❤️😢

Yeah they had this teen mom dynamic where it was all 3 of them plus the parents.....little foots dad was a dead beat
I realized recently just how GOOD the use of color is in this movie. You definitely get the impression of hard times and the land without food and water, but they don’t have to go with drab colors to convey it. What you do see is lots of warm colors - arid oranges and reds and browns. It makes the cool greens and blues of the Great Valley stand out all the more at the end without sacrificing nice backgrounds throughout the rest of the story.
Fun Fact: Throughout production, the film underwent severe cutting and editing of footage. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas thought that some scenes in the movie would appear too dark and intense for young children. Spielberg told Don Bluth while looking at the scenes from the film, "It's too scary. We'll have kids crying in the lobby and many angry parents. You don't want that." About nineteen scenes comprising ten minutes of footage, mostly pertaining to the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the five characters in mild peril or distress, were cut or trimmed. Bluth was unhappy with the cuts and fought to keep the footage, but felt like he had to do so, making this film only 69 minutes, one of his shortest. He claims to have a personal copy of the film reel with the whole thing, though no word on whether or not it will ever see the light of day.

I'm glad your shingles and brain fog are getting better, and it's nice how you could connect to this film during that time. This is easily my favorite Don Bluth film. Even with all the cuts that were unfortunately made, it's still that "80's G" level of dark, the animation is gorgeous, the characters are great, and it's a very griping story. I'll always love it.
It's one of my favorites too! This and american tail were on a constant loop in my house back when I was a kid!
80's G is just PG-13 now.

I always loved don bluths films, mainly in the 80s and the 90s with Anastasia, he was truly the rival to Disney during the 80s with so many classics like American tail, secret of nimh, and all dogs go to heaven just to name a few, of course the 80s was when disney was at its low point for films, and don bluth was beating out their competition
Where Disney's "Bambi" failed, Don Bluth and team succeeded in the scenes when the 2 protagonists' mothers die. When Bambi's mother dies, Bambi shed's a few tears but not too long afterwards, it's spring and the birds were twitterpating. In "The Land Before Time", however, we see Little Foot go through all the stages of grief after watching his mother pass away:
1) depression (a lot of crying and loss of appetite)
2) anger ("she should've known better...it's all her fault")
3) bargaining ("I never should've wandered so far from home")
4) denial (thinking his shadow is his mother, that she's not dead after all)
5) acceptance (finally acknowledging that his mother is truly gone)
The fact that Little Foot, and we the audience, witnessed Mama Longneck die, accompanied James Horner's beautiful scoring, definitely made the tearjerker factor that strong to this day.

@@user-qg3nj1sv8j Eh, I think the early sequels are pretty good. Specifically II through IV, when The Mysterious Beyond and the creatures inhabiting it meshed well with what we saw in the original movie. Starting in V - though a good movie with great songs and the return of a character I was excited to see again - the general designs of the scenery and characters were distinctly different and started trending away from the original film and more realistic.

@@kdawg4585 I admit, having Littlefoot finally meet his father, and learn his mom's name, was neat, and if there's ever a time to reveal that it's the tenth film. But I only saw it the once and I don't really remember all that much of the top of my head.

PS The theme to it “Best of Friends” by the late Olivia Newton John is the second best song of the series IMO.
One Last Fun Fact: Having worked with her on this movie, Judith Barsi was Steven Spielbergs first choice to play Lex in Jurassic Park. He was completely unaware that Barsi had been murdered by her own father, just a few years earlier. He expressed his deep sadness after hearing the news. The role of Lex eventually went to Ariana Richards.

Man, James Horners orchestral score to this movie was one of his finest works. Its ethereal, melancholic, and every time I hear the choirs and strings I tear up.
It's so good! It's one of my favorite film scores!
James Horner's music is amazing. He really makes great emotional music for emotional moments in movies. Even if it's an animated movie.
No mention of the credits song, with Diana Ross doing her absolute best work.

Fun fact: Littlefoot found the Great Valley before returning to rescue his friends from the tar. Plus it shows that Sharptooth was getting closer to their paradise so they bad to take him out before he can reach it. But they apparently swapped the scenes around so that he found it after they defeated him.
That was true in the original cut. I don't remember why they opted to change it (which they did at the last minute in post-production), but it resulted in a continuity error, as the boulder that they used to get rid of Sharptooth was visible in the background at the start of the scene in which Littlefoot is guided to the Great Valley, despite the fact that the scene was moved to take place after Sharptooth's demise...
This movie resonated with me all throughout my childhood. Even though I didn't get to watch it very often, I always remembered the characters, the emotions, and the message. It especially helped me a lot when I was 7 and my family moved to the suburbs where I was made fun of and beaten by other kids, I had to give up dance class and girl scouts, my older siblings became angry and often took their anger out on me, and my mother slowly but surely went from being a loving, caring parent to a raging alcoholic who would fly into a rage out of no where and hit me. I was 9 when I started having bad thoughts and tried to end it all because I had lost everything I loved. I felt like there was no point in going on. But then, The Land Before Time would pop into my head, and it would give me hope to keep going on, even though all seemed lost. I eventually stopped having bad thoughts when I met my best friend Bobby in high school. He is basically my Ducky. I'm beyond grateful to the writers of this movie, and to James Horner and Diana Ross for creating the song that helped me get through my darkest times 🥹
Gotta love how personal this movie is, especially with the monologue of Doug Walkers health update. I mean, with that and also the studio going through another disaster, it’s gotten quite real with the videos and how there’s touches of reality and understandable concerns.

This movie left the biggest impact on me as a child, I got depressed when I watched it as a kid, because of Littlefoot’s mother and the voice of Ducky. Even Don Bluth was saddened by this movie because of his memories of Judith Barsi!
Some clarification here. For those unaware, this film has a VERY dark backstory aspect. Don Bluth had all the young dinosaurs voiced by actual children for realism. The little girl who voiced Ducky (as well as Anne-Marie from "All Dogs go to Heaven") was named Judith Barsi. Sadly, shortly after\ this film was produced, Barsi and her mother were brutally murdered by her abusive, alcoholic, father before he then killed himself. She was just ten years old at the time, and never got to see the film she made.
@@Feralwolf444I know what happened to Judith, but Don Bluth was traumatized and thought both Land Before Time and All Dogs go to Heaven were too dark for kids, and decided to change his tone with his later movies like Rock a Doodle and A Troll in Central Park!
@@Markimark151 I actually liked a troll in central park as a kid. My nana had it on vhs at her old house when I was younger. I think I liked it cause it was so happy and bouncy lol. Now I don't like it that much lol.

The orchestral score in this movie by James Horner is truly underappreciated and is one of the chief contributors that makes this movie so impactful. Horner, in general, seems underrated to me... With stuff like this, Braveheart, Titanic, Apollo 13, Willow, Mask of Zorro, Aliens, and so many more, it feels as if he should be more of a household name, like Williams, Zimmer, or Elfman.
The part where little foot runs to his shadow because he thinks it's his mother breaks my heart. I did something similar once. My mom's not dead but we were separated at different times in my life and once, genuinely not having realized I looked anything like her (my whole life people said I looked like my dad's side of the family) I caught a reflection in a half mirror, swear to God my brain registered the glimpse as "it's mommy!" And I ran towards that corner like nobody's business. I was so sad when I saw the mirror and realized what actually happened.
Similar idea, after me dad passed he would often show up in my dreams and no matter the context of the dream, no matter what world or headspace I was in, once I saw him, it snapped me back to reality and I'd simply hug him and cry that weird dream crying where it's just sobbing, it stopped after about 2 years where he would appear and the dream continued but it was truly surreal.
@nobodybroda3826 I know what you mean. I used to dream a lot of a cousin of mine who passed away thirteen years ago. I cried a couple of times in my dreams and there was one time when I thought I saw him in a crowd (this was a few years after he died) and I was happy but then reality hit me like a truck. I miss him so much and I don't see him in my dreams as often but I enjoy those little moments if he visits ❤
Another Fun Fact: Don Bluth has described Spike as "a pure soul, simple, accommodating, and eager to please."

He said that because Spike's character is inspired by his pet dog, that's why Spike acts differently than the others, he's a prehistoric dino baby dog in the first movie, and a prehistoric dino hatchling dog by the time of Land Before Time XIV, he has no autism or is on drugs like some folks thinks.

This movie was the first VHS my mother ever gave me for my own, it was a Christmas present, I watched it many times. She was missing for eleven years, I was six, and the next time I saw her was difficult.
She was a victim of a brutal attack and was in a coma, and a Jane Doe, nobody knowing who she was.
Life is cruel, but I think the message of this movie is reminding me that there’s still time to be had, and faith can guide us, and our loved one’s words hold great value.
Fun fact: The scene with Littlefoot seeing his mother in the clouds and finding the Great Valley was originally going to take place after he splits up with the rest of the group. It was there that he realized he needed to go back for them.
If you look at the first shot of Littlefoot's mother in the clouds, you can still see the boulder on top of the ledge. There is also the edited shot of all of them gazing at the Great Valley with Ducky saying "Littlefoot, you found it!"

I acutally just got through showing my niece this film for the first time. She loves dinosaurs and it was just a moment of clarity for her at 3 years old when Littlefoots Mom died. Usually for her she's all about Paw Patrol, and things like that. There's no risk of Skye not getting back up. But here, she was shown a story with someone dying. Of course she cried, but I told her to watch more. She sat through the entire thing and now I have to find a Ducky Plush somewhere in 2024.
This is my plan for my little nephew - want to show him this film, which gets to me every time.

Fourteen sequels and a TV series. Never would have imagined that back in 1988, but back then I was a little kid enthralled, saddened, and happy about this movie as I watched it in the theater. Still one of my all-time favorite movies, a testament to what Don Bluth could do with characters and stories, and "If We Hold On Together" is an incredibly beautiful song.
I really wish the lost 19 minutes of footage were still around, no idea while the film containing them was burned.
This gets my vote for the greatest animated tearjerker. Bambi's mother? Mufasa? Child's play. Disney has nothing on this.
And the soundtrack to this film is seriously underrated. Incredibly beautiful score.
So here’s a story. Back in February, a Theater near me was playing Land Before Time for $2 tickets on a Saturday Morning, I had never seen Land Before Time, I had seen Secret of Nimh and An American Tail. So when I heard they were playing Land Before Time, I quickly bought my ticket and when I saw it, I fell in love with the film and was so glad I saw it in theater as it felt like the one Bluth movie that should be seen I a theater

Last March, my local Regal was showing this film so I went and saw it on the big screen. There was a surprising amount of people in the theater made up of both kids and adults.
I’ve seen the film maybe long ago on Netflix or HBO etc but it was amazing finally seeing it on the big screen as I wasn’t born yet when it originally came out in 1988.

Fun fact: Child actor, Gabriel Damon who voiced Littlefoot would go on to play that foul mouthed little punk, Hob in RoboCop 2.

The scene with Rooter always makes me cry. He starts off so annoyed but then becomes so understanding and sympathetic, knowing Littlefoots’s anger is internal; angry at her for ‘leaving’, angry at himself for getting into that situation in the first place, but Rooter knows he’s just a little kid who’s alone and heartbroken.
Learning that he immediately tells Littlefoot it’s not his fault, it’s no one’s fault, it’s just life, but as long as he lives and remembers his mother’s words and teachings she’ll never truly leave him. This scene never really hit me as a kid, but now grown up and having felt the pain of loss, grief and heartbreak I see it in a completely new light (and a few tears.) ❤
I sympathize with what you're going through, I suffer from seizures and fibromyalgia fatigue. Every day I have moments where I just feel gone, and it can last seconds or it can last hours. This video made me cry, and not just because of the nostalgic childhood emotions.

To be fair half of those movies involve the characters somehow leaving being taken from the Great Valley and trying to make it back home.

I used to watch this film all the time as a kid. I loved it. No tears, just excitement, because DINOSAURS! Though I’m sure I didn’t really understand what death was at 4 years old and apparently almost every morning after this I would wake my mother up at 5am to check that she wasn’t dead (I’m sure she loved that!).
Though, as an adult, I can’t watch this film without sobbing in both sadness and happiness. Littlefoot’s mother wrecks me every time. And I have fond memories of watching the sequels as a kid and thinking my grandpa (who has since passed) was like grandpa long neck.

I loved the movie too and even many of the sequels, I watched them and many other films with my mon almost every night before bed but I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the original film after my mom passed away.
I was also 4 years old, and enjoyed watching T-Rex feast on dinos in old Discovery Channel clips. I was upset that Sharptooth lost, not that the mom died lol.
I was the same way! I used to be obsessed with this movie and watched it all the time. Now, I can't watch this movie without crying. Heck I couldn't even watch Doug's review without the tears flowing! There's just something about the music and visuals that just makes me cry every time.
I hope he one day does All Dogs Go to Heaven because that was Judith Barsi’s (Ducky’s VA) last voice role before her tragic fate. She voiced Anne Marie and in memory of her, Don Bluth decided that in case the movie gained a sequel or series that Anne Marie would not be included because he only wanted the role to belong to Judith. That’s why when the sequel did happen it was set 56 years after the first. How bittersweet. It’s sad that Anne Marie pretty much went with Judith but it’s also heartwarming that it is a role that only belongs to her and in a sense it makes sure that Judith will never be forgotten as when people think of the character and the movie they will always think of her as well.

i loved this movie on VHS as a kid. the whole thing is so sad but uplifting. I remember i was terrified of Sharp tooth, he felt like an actual villian and everytime he was on screen it felt tense and scary
Ducky was Judith Barsi's favorite of her own film roles.
It was also unfortunately one of her last. Her father brutally murdered her.

Tops is one of my favorite characters though. I really loved him and Grandpa’s best frenemy buddy cop dynamic, and both of them had amazing voice actors who always did amazing. RIP to John Ingle and Kenneth Mars.

When this movie was released, I was five years old and already obsessed with dinosaurs, especially sauropod dinosaurs, which were my favorite variety. This movie was absolutely perfect for me at that time, and was far and away my favorite movie for the next several years. I constantly reenacted it with my huge toy dinosaur collection, but always changed the story so that Littlefoot's mother survived and was there to help the group on their journey.
By the time the first sequel was released, I was 11 and found that it was very "dumbed down" compared to the original (which I rewatched to make sure I wasn't just "too old" for it and found that the original still held up). That disappointment led me to not bother with the rest of the sequels.
Yeah. The sequels were...ok. I was born in 1992, so I grew up with the sequels being present as I watched the first. Some of them were better than others. A few were even pretty good. None (That I saw) ever held a candle to the original. There was just a heart and a beauty to that film that made it one of the animated greats that the sequels lacked. You didn't miss a lot by avoiding them, especially if you were already 11 when they started coming out.
On a side note, I was very pleased to finally get to see this film in theaters as a summer re-run a few years ago for a dollar.

Little foots mother is still one of the most emotional deaths in Cartoon. I even argue in movie all over also.
it still gives chills and make you feel your heart strings being pulled on.. Land before time is just an Masterpiece of Animation movies. at least the first. is an masterpiece it loses a bit of the magic as it goes on for me.
Cool small detail: when the cloud of Littlefoot's mom leads him to the Great Valley, the rays of sunshine that illuminate and reveal the valley come from her heart. The animators knew what they were doing.
This is the only movie that makes me cry. Not only cry, but cry hysterically. Little foot mother dying is insanely heartbreaking. The music really brings at home too.
You're not alone on this. I'm not one to cry at movies, but this one is different and hits hard. I usually crack even before his mother's death - I think it's a combination of Horner's score and personal nostalgia, but even the scene where Littlefoot is born gets to me.

As a Latter Day Saint I learned when I was young about how said faith was overtly implemented throuh the story by fellow LDS filmmaker Don Bluth. One of the original spiritual tearjerkers in my life. Incidentally the running length is exactly the same as Bambi. 69 minutes. I lost my grandma less than a year later. I was only 3. I didnt really understand at the time, but my mom sure felt lost at first so this always struck a chord with us. Im getting teary eyed as I type. You had some funny quips here.

So happy to see you still making these videos all these years later. There were quite a few nights I spent binge watching Nostalgia Critic on your website all the way back in my freshman year of high school. Over 15 years later, and the content is still just as good.
I’ve always enjoyed Land Before Time, not just for the great story and characters, but also it’s brutal honesty towards Littlefoot’s Mother’s death, from the genuine, heartfelt bond she shares with her son, to her sacrificing herself to save him and Cera, and the excellent voice acting from Helen Shaver and Littlefoot’s actor, Gabriel Damon, as she passes away, with the movie not shying away from how hard it is for Littlefoot to move on from her death, as it takes time for him to heal and adjust to it, with both the Rooter scene and the scene with his mother’s ghost guiding him towards the Great Valley that always makes me breaks me down into a sobbing wreck, but it also finally shows Littlefoot and his friends a happy ending as they are reunited with their families.
And stop cracking the whip on Oliver And Company, that movie is a lot better than you give it credit for! It has a good story that isn’t afraid to get dark but still has a optimistic tone with Oliver growing from a scared kitten, in confident hero who gets a home, family and friends, likeable, colourful characters, great animation, good music and voice acting, especially from Billy Joel as Dodger, who surprisingly gives a charismatic, funny, yet heartfelt and dramatic performance in the more emotional scenes.
Interesting fact about the film's climax, when Littlefoot sees the shape of his mother in the clouds, if you look in the background and you can see the cliff they knocked SharpTooth off but the boulder is still there this is because him finding the valley was supposed to occur before the final battle.
Heartbroken after leaving his friends, Littlefoot would find the valley proving he was right, but instead of just going in himself, he decides to go back and help the others. This is makes Cera leaving after the tar incident more impactful cause now we KNOW she went the wrong way. And of course when Littlefoot leads his friends back to the valley, they find SharpTooth and the final battle commences.
On a similar note, Littlefoot blinds SharpTooth in one eye during their first encounter, however in several scenes before the blinding, SharpTooth's eye is already closed indicating several scenes were rearranged or cut.

Critic. This film was my favorite movie of all time as a kid. I called my mothers salads "Treestars" because of it. I felt very much like Littlefoot when I lived with my mother, grandmother and grandfather. So when Littlefoots mother died, you can bet that my mom needed to be there so I had a shoulder to cry on.
I was a little kid back then but I still appreciate the work put into this film. The sequels though...
I liked the second sequel as a kid but it's clearly not as good as the first. I only watched up to four I believe.

I always figured the Tree Star was special because it was a full, fresh, green leaf unmarred by death in a period where they were lucky to find dead leaves. It also works well for a metaphor for Littlefoot himself. A bright young life surrounded by a dying race.

This film will always have a place in my heart as it was the first movie that I saw at the cinema. I don't remember if I cried during the first viewing but every time that I tried to watch it again over the years I would just breakdown. Not just over Littlefoot's mother's death, but the sad music, Littlefoot's loneliness until he meets Ducky. I could even feel myself tearing up when they showed the scene of Rooter comforting Littlefoot. No other death in a movie has been so hard hitting as this one. After finding out what happened to Ducky's voice actress, it just made this movie even more crushing.
A random fact: the Finnish name for the land before time is Maa aikojen alussa, which translates back to as The land at the beginning of time.
That's cool! I'm Danish and here we call it "Landet for længe siden" which translates back as "The Land from Long Ago".
Here in Italy, we got a quite bland translation: "the Enchanted Valley".

James Horner’s score also really adds to the weight of the journey. “The Earthquake” is tense and horrifying, the music after Littlefoot is born is wholesome and warm to highlight the bond with him and his mother, and of course, “Whispering Winds” is emotionally powerful. The movie was initially envisioned as a Fantasia style experience, and I’m convinced you could watch it with just the animation and music and it would still hit as hard.
I'm kinda surprised no mention on the change in scene order for the ending. Supposedly in the original, when the gang splits after the sharptooth attack, Littlefoot finds the Great Valley with his mother's spirit/cloud, then goes back to find the others (leading to the scene where he arrives to save them), and then they kill the sharptooth. But now, its the split, then Littlefoot saves them, kill the sharptooth, then suddenly Littlefoot is own his own finding the Great Valley.
There's even evidence in the shot since the rock used to kill the sharptooth is there in one of the scenes when he finds the GV, making it seem like it was supposed to be before.
Feels like 65 million years we were waiting for him to do something Land Before Time related

The death scene for Little Foot's mom always hits hard.
This movie came out the year I was born. It's one of the those movies of my childhood that I cherish so much. The music, the animation, the voices, they are all so familiar to me, its that level of familiarity like the hug from your grandpa, or the kiss from your mom. It's something that has just been imprinted onto my consciousness.
I’m sure many of you have already heard the really sad story of Judith Barsi. The voice of Ducky who, along with her Mother, Maria Barsi, was tragically and sadly murdered by her own Father, Jószef Barsi in July 1988, after Judith and Maria suffered years of severe physical, mental and emotional abuse by her Father at home.

Yeah I only learned of it yesterday because som troll on facebook thought I needed to know. Maybe I never knew because we never got All Dogs go to Heaven 1 in Denmark and as a kid I saw The Land Before Time dubbed in Danish, so I guess the fate of the original cast was never all that relevant to me. And while it IS of course sad and tragic, I think it is more important and respectful to Judith's memory that we cherish her performances. He may not be with us anymore and was taken from us WAY too soon, but she lives ON through her performances. So rather than watch her films and mourn her fate, we should watch them with vigor and relish in the fact that unlike her coward of a father, SHE will live on forever!

I would add that this can be applied to older characters too, if done right.
But unfortunately, a lot of movies, and especially TV shows, of today do this wrong. This is usually because the director, writer, or both get caught up in overplaying or milking out the joke, which usually amounts to one of the following:
• It’s funny because this character is a jerk
• It’s funny because this character is oblivious
• It’s funny because no one ever changes or learns anything

I Always love when Diana Ross sings If We Hold On Together during the end credits, that is how you make people stay for the end credits without special scenes.

It’s like the family friendly version of Event Horizon in that sense. What we have is great, but you can’t help but wonder how much better it would be if that lost footage was recovered and restored.

Funny story, when I was 3 my dad (rest his soul) found this movie when he worked out of town and thought I'd love it cause of the dinosaurs. So he brought it home and gave it to my mom who was a little skeptical if this was ok for a toddler to watch, but dad said it was fine. Cut to me bawling my eyes out over Little Foots mom dying and my dad on the road to his job. Mom told me had he been in the house she would have strangled him!
Anyway this has always been one of my favorite movies despite the first time I saw it, and I always loved how they showed the grieving process for Little Foot when I was older!
This movie was my introduction to death. I had seen Bambi, but this one really brought it home. It made me question what was death. I was so upset over that scene. I kept rewinding the video over and over and would argue with my parents. "Why is she dying, she's not even bleeding! She's fine! Why is she not fine?" I kept thinking the animation team had made a mistake and if I rewind the movie enough, maybe the mistake would correct itself. I still love that movie.
Cera was always my favorite. I don’t know how many people liked her, but she has the best character arc while still keeping her sassy personality and I loved her, even as a kid.
She’s probably the reason triceratops are my favorite dinosaurs. 😉
I just wanna bring this up during the Ducky finding Spike moment. Spike is as big as Ducky at first, but then out of nowhere he's as big as Littlefoot and the others. I don't know what magical moment it was, or just logic.
Dude, Little Foot's mother dying really hit me hard as an adult, it just reminds me how limited our time is with those we love, it really made me think about it and I kind of got depressed.

This was actually the very first movie I saw in theaters (I was three, and I had remembered the animation quite well if not much of the story). I grew up on a lot of Don Bluth and Disney, our whole family did, and this movie (and maybe SOME of the sequels and bits of the animated series) still holds a special place right up there in the top favorites.

I watched this with my brother months after my mom died (from the same disease that killed my sister a couple years earlier) and we finally were able to cry and actually talk about what we were going through and what we planned to do next and support each other. That's what this damn movie means to me. It doesn't soften any blows but makes you feel like getting through shit IS possible and even... hard to imagine as it is... worth it.

As a kid, I had no concept of the idea that sequels were just tacked onto existing franchises, and thought they always were the result of a grand story all planned out in advance. Because of this, I remember being almost _intimidated_ by the fact that there were so many entries in the Land Before Time series. I couldn’t even *begin* watching the first movie because I knew there were all these other entries out there somewhere and I was upset I would be missing out on the “full story”.
Specifically with Land Before Time I was for longest time only aware of the first five. As for the concept of sequels, as a kid, when a new film released in a series I forgot all about the original because now it was "old news". Me and my siblings, when Pokémon 2: The Power of One released we seldom ever watched the first one again, and same story with Lion King 2.
A nice little animated film. I would be interested in seeing the longer cut since I read it was edited before release
