  • You won't believe how mellow these two bi-color Persian kitties named Machu and Picchu are while they enjoy a luxurious spa grooming with Helen of The Pet Maven. In this video you'll learn more about Helen's process, the tools of the trade, and the logistics of grooming in New York's tiny apartments. These boys' sweet temperaments make them perfect fur-models for the always fashionable Lion Cut! They have a pretty terrific life in New York City, especially considering they are rescue kitties! Machu and Picchu were found abandoned in a duffel bag during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, taken in by a rescue group, and happily adopted into a loving home! We love stories with happy endings, especially when they involve such sweet kitties as this!

    Very informative video. Thanks so much for this! I know my cat won't like it at first, but she gets used to grooming really quick, once she finds out it feels good to her. I'm sure She would warm up to this just as easy. She deserves the best treatment and to be free of that long coat sometimes. She was thrown out as a pregnant kitten near my home. Found all her kittens loving homes, had her fixed. Now she lives a life of luxury and LOVE

    I'll have what kitty's drinking! Ha! My loving quarter Persian longhair kitty turns into a wild cougar when the nail or electric clippers come out. I should probably be in complete armor for the grooming session. We get through it, though, because I'm not paying for vet sedation or chance a rough handling groomer. I wish there was a gentle sedation to give her at home. Oh well. When my little lion emerges free of all that fur, she's happy as can be. The fur grows back silky soft. She loves the freedom and feeling cooler during hotter seasons.

    Could you do a video on how to do a full grooming on a not so easy to handle cat?

    • @petmaven
      @petmaven  Před 9 lety +19

      favored1 Great suggestion. I have also wanted to do that since a lot of the cats we groom are difficult. But, the general public who views these videos is so critical. They are not professional cat groomers yet seem to render opinions on grooming that they no nothing about. Even on an easy cat to groom I receive ridiculous comments on how we handle the cat or what the breed standard should be. I provide a service to clients and if they want their Maine Coon or Persian Cat shaved in a lion cut or given a haircut or kept as the breed standard that is just fine with me. One of these days I will get enough courage to share a difficult groom. If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact me directly through the website. Thank You!

      I can relate to your hesitation on making these other videos as most are not professionals like you said. I like how you clean the ears using the wipe. I use a soft tissue, but your idea is much better. You are amazing with the animals and do a terrific job explain the tools and each aspect. It shows how you respect the pet as well as the owner. We work with rescues (not in NY) and as you can imagine, our sessions don't go like this LOL. We should buy stock in Bactine. Looking forward to more of your videos (we can take it.) Keep up the great work. May God bless you for your kindness to His creatures. Have a great day!

    Thank you very much for the video. Love it. I have two Himalayan cats. One is a stress case and has already lost one eye due to being a stress case and so for years, I've been grooming them myself. I've ordered 3 different clippers over a span of 9 years and none work as well as the one you are using in this video. I usually have to make several passes with a number 10 blade to get it leveled and short. Would you be kind enough to let me know what the model number is of the Andis Excel that you use. There seems to be several on the market. The clippers should have the model number. I would be very grateful and so would my high stress cats. I'm sure the grooming process would go quicker. I've ordered 2 other Andis clippers and one was useless and the other one worked well for a few times and seemed to dull fast. I follow all of the care instructions of the clippers and it still seems to be problematic.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Which clippers/blade are you using? You made that look easy. My "dog clippers" must be shitty or something because my cat doesn't really like them.

    • @petmaven
      @petmaven  Před 9 lety

      WGProductions I don't recommend shaving your own cat unless you know what you are doing. A cat's skin is like crepe paper, very thin and can easily tear. I use different clippers when I groom a cat versus a dog. It's a very different technique.

    HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT VETS SEDATING CATS TO GROOM THEM? I LIVE IN SWEDEN AND WE DONT REALLY HAVE GROOMERS HERE FOR CATS SO THE VETS IS THE ONLY OPTION AND THEY WILL NOT GROOM WITHOUT SEDATION.

    • @petmaven
      @petmaven  Před 8 lety +5

      +snuggle bunny Unfortunately, even in the United States, it is standard procedure at most vet's offices to sedate any cat before grooming. It can be extremely stressful to the cat being sedated and in most instances it is not necessary. Most cats we are grooming are being groomed in the client's home and most do well. For very matted cats, that are extremely aggressive we need them to be sedated at a vet's office, otherwise we could not safely remove the mats. But, it is not the majority of cats we groom. Most cats we can safely groom without any sedation at all. I am private, house call groomer so I groom in the client's home.

    Hi! I'm a solo groomer at an animal hospital, and the hardest part of my job right now is solo cat grooming. Obviously I can manage nail trims, hygiene cuts, and baths, just fine. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to SAFELY get a clean, even cut on a cat by myself. All the videos i've found are like yours- someone with an assistant. Unfortunately, the crew at the animal hospital is getting tired of me constantly paging for a second set of hands. Do you have any tips on solo shaving? Or handling less-than-compliant animals for grooming? Again, I've youtubed it and all i can find are people handling fractious cats for medical purposes. I can't groom a cat covered in a wool blanket!

    • @petmaven
      @petmaven  Před 8 lety +3

      +RatherAshesThanDust Solo grooming is really tough and often not that safe. It is very difficult to focus on doing a clean lion cut or haircut or for that matter dealing with a very matted cat when you also have to watch the cat's claws and mouth. When I have groomed solo you have to use your whole body to groom, arms to hold legs back; it is very physical. For a very matted cat, I need to be able (or my assistant does) to stretch the skin so the cat is not nicked. When I groomed in a salon they use to give me all the cats that came in and I always had to ask for help and people got annoyed. Since this is my own business I can have an assistant. Are you using an e-collar on difficult cats. We use arm guards too (bite buster); they are great. Honestly, I want to keep grooming safe for me and the cat so I wouldn't groom a oversized, difficult, first time grooming cat by myself.

      CLH Thank You! I like the Andis Excel, but a lot of other cat groomers like Wahl clippers. Not something you should do if you know nothing about cat grooming. The cat's skin is like crepe paper; it can tear very easily if you don't know what you are doing.
