    Joe Cocker loved Ray Charles and you can definitely hear the influence Ray had on him. Ray himself praised Joe's singing, which is very high praise indeed.

    Joe Cocker didn't have a disability. He was high on anything he could get his hands on for years (by his own admission). He was known for moving to the music, it was how he performed. Joe did enjoy several sober years before he died. He's British but he was living here in the states and happily married when he died. Anything from his collaborative album Maddogs and Englishmen is just so good. He and Leon Russell were good friends and performed on that album together.

    Joe did not have a medical condition which caused his jerky movements when performing. He was just feeling the music.
    Years later, Cocker told The Associated Press’ Mary Campbell that he was playing an imaginary piano and air guitar while singing - the elements that contributed to this unique style.
    “That was the frustration of not being able to play, really,” he said.

    The type of dancing in the background was called "Go-Go dancing". It was very popular and many music shows all over the world had their own group of Go-go dancers. You need to see Joe later in his career do a live version of "You Can Leave Your Hat On".

    I was a hippy kid back in the 60's and went to see....somebody? at the Electric Theater in Chicago. Joe Cocker was the opening act; nobody had heard of him, he didn't have a record out yet. After the first tune, you coulda heard a pin drop. Everybody wondered if he was ok. But he went on and he was so effing good, everybody loved him. Check out his "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" record and tour. He is MUSIC, man. Instead of being some preening rock star he's just completely imbedded in the music. No showbiz bs with Cocker. A legend.

  • @Harvestersz

    Many years ago, I used to listen to Larry King's radio show at night. One night Joe Cocker was the guest. He showed up drunk as a skunk. I remember Larry kept saying to him, 'You're drunk, Joe!' and Joe kept saying back to him, 'mumble mumble mumble .... Everyone needs a little nip now and then, larry'. This went on for hours. One of the funniest things I have ever heard.

  • @debrabeck9630
    @debrabeck9630 Před 2 lety +5

    This is great, and he did feel the music. He knew his movements were different, but that’s fine. One of the funniest things I have ever seen was John Belushi doing his Joe Cocker imitation on SNL years ago. When Joe Cocker was the guest singer, John Belushi did Joe Cocker right with him. So, not only did the man have a distinct performance style, he had a great sense of humor about it. (I think you’re right about Austin Powers.)

    Hitchcock Railway!
    'We' went to the fillmore in san francisco to see joe cocker after his first album (fantastic, still) came out but before we had seen him live/woodstock. We took some acid for the show. When he came out and started performing we had never seen his 'air guitar/spastic' movements and we were definitely freaked out enough to have to leave the hall and listen to the rest of the show in the cafe.

  • @FolkSongsEtAl
    @FolkSongsEtAl Před 2 lety +2

    He had a reputation for being very high or drunk in shows during the 60s. I think he had to settle down by the mid 70s, because you just can't keep up the quality of performance, or even survive properly with that kind of lifestyle. He definitely had a particular way of moving.

    For the love of God. His movements were a direct result of the fact that his idol growing up was Ray Charles. He imitated Ray at a young age and it continued through his career. It blows my mind that people “in the comments” of these videos that claim to know his music and his history don’t say this.

    At Woodstock - he had the freedom of an entire stage, he could move much more. At this performance, he was on a much smaller raised stage. He didn't have nearly as much room to move like he did at Woodstock.
    Kind of like if you put a shark in a fish tank, it will only grow as much as the tank allows - that same shark in the oceN will grow to weigh over a ton.

    It is like stank face of blues guitar. His body moves are part of getting the music out. Happens subconsciously.

    You really need to check out the cover of this by Grand Funk Railroad! It's the best version IMO. This song has been covered a lot but I think GFR takes the cake.

    In Woodstock he was playing air guitar. He may have invented it 😆

    I own 1500 records, 400 CDs and not a single Joe Cocker joint. I feel a little ashamed to keep it real
