I heard someone say once, and I positively agree, that the notes he almost hits are far more beautiful than they would be if he actually hit them.

It's been said that Stevie Ray Vaughn played the guitar like his life depended on it. I believe Joe Cocker sang much in the same way. What a legend.

There's a reason this song has endured for decades, and why no one else but Joe Cocker can give it the beauty and gravitas it deserves. It's the same reason only Leonard Cohen can truly sing "Hallelujah."

I saw Cocker live at a small venue in Baltimore almost 20 years ago. Live, his voice is like nothing I've ever heard. It's very difficult to describe but you could literally feel his voice in the air around you. Recordings completely fail at capturing the experience of hearing his voice live. You're right about his heart. He put 100% into every song. His encore was an a capella version of this song and it was just absolutely amazing.

btw the best Love Song ever .
The German Fans always loved him , his Incredible Voice was brocken that time of course what the Music Industrie did to him in the early day's after Woodstock .
They took the money , he had to do so many Concerts in a row for nearly no payed for ,
because of the contract he signed , for all his performences the right was on their side .
They left him with his alcohol problems on the Bulky Waste .
He performed at a Concert on ' The Rockpalast ' in Germany
It was like he's being reborn for his own second career.
I've bought the Video from that concert , there's a song called ' wasted Years ' that he performed , it's like a mirrow of his life ...it makes me cry everytime .

I've just recently started watching "reaction" videos, and always enjoy your technical breakdowns of each artist's performance. You nailed Joe Cocker's gift of performing with pure emotion. One of the hardest things for people to do is bare their emotion, their feelings, and their soul to others. (That's why they call it soul.) I went back and watched this a second time watching your face as Joe sang. At the end you said you didn't say much, but your expressions said plenty. Joe succeeded in instilling in you the feelings he was sharing in the song. I think you were spot on in that Joe's gift may not be technical skills (Although he has plenty.) but more in his ability to share that pure emotion that comes from the soul. One of your best reactions Beth. Peace. ✌

I know this video is a year old... but it's my absolute favorite. The purist form of the human condition is to feel what others are feeling

When a vocal coach says to a voice that sounds like some scrubs a metal bathtub with a steel brush that this is a perfect voice, this means something.

This video of yours, Beth, perhaps is the best I've ever seen in your channel, for a not so simple reason: Joe Cocker did put all emotions possible while he was singing, and you did the same, "feeling" the desperation he felt in his interpretation! I think the title of the song fits in you just like a glove...

Joe Cocker has one of the most amazing voices in history - instantly recognizable, powerful, emotional. You're seeing him at the tail end of his life when his voice was shattered by age, hard use, and declining health, but still awesome. He died of lung/throat cancer in 1914 at 70 years old after having smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for decades. If you want to see him in his prime, check out Woodstock or any of his music from the 1970s. Just terrific.

One of my all time favorite singers. I loved this man for his out pouring. But as sad as I hate to say it by this age and his lung problems starting to show, it really is sad that he truely was struggling. Still loved by many though and may we all remember the heat and soul he us. Rest in peace dear friend. Legend

After Joe passed people recounted their memories of him.A guy told of Joe turning up at his record companies office in London in his early career days asking if they could find a bit of cash for him.He had made a stack of money for them already,so they made him a cup of tea and a biscuit.shortly they turn up with what they could scrape together in a few minutes. Many thousands of pounds. It was a great deal of money.Joe was a little embarrassed,he was broke, all he wanted was the price of a train ticket to Sheffield.
He was a decent sort of man somewhat taken advantage of.

There is only one Joe Cocker.
And man, the control he has of that voice is . . . masterclass.
    Thank you for this.
