This video is about the game of Diplomacy, an American strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 based on the European Great Powers in the years leading up to World War I. The game was the favorite of John F. Kennedy and Henry Kissinger. Seven (7) players control the respective powers of England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey and fight for world domination (control over Europe), using negotiations, diplomatic skill, tactics, and grand strategy to establish covert deals, attack mutual enemies, and backstab established allies. A "stab" is the word for betraying your ally.
TL;DR: Diplomacy is basically Risk without the dice, or chess with seven players on a world map.

I find gifting a solo to another player such a unsportsmanlike move. Like, everyone in the game except turkey and russia kept playing on for table scraps and Russia decided since they didn't have an easy route to solo they weren't going to play anymore. It's one thing to throw a solo when people won't help you hold a stalemate line after it becomes obvious they don't intend to let you survive the draw... it's another to throw a solo from the board top and bin everyone else's effort for the entire game🙄

Not to be a Hindsight-Harry but when France suddenly stops talking to you that's usually an indication that he has already agreed to an alliance with England.
At that point I wouldn't put any trust into England and instead switch into full defense-mode, trying to stall as long as possible while trying to rally the rest of the board to bail you out (or until you can convince one of E/F to stab the other but for that you probably have to be able to stall for 1-2 years first)

Having continued watching it looks like France was just inactive with his comms for a season (which I wouldn't have expected in a tournament game) but I think my point still stands.
Seeking help from England was deffinitely no great call and lead you to building no fleets which was very costly because you were always a year too slow with your progress as a result

Alright, important lesson learned. If there is a Juggernaut in the east and you’re a western power, make sure that you’re one of two western powers within the next few years rather than one of three.

I am so angry seeing this... I treasure what I believe to be "the spirit" of the game of diplomacy. What Russia did this game goes against everything I believe about our hobby. Reading his explanation was even more aggravating, considering it made no logical sense. Complaining about players choosing being part of a draw instead of giving him the solo. Utterly ridicolous. I'm sorry you had to endure this, find solace in the fact that you lost through no fault of your own. The whole game was decided by foolish decisions made by other players. What more could you have done?

Thank you for the commiseration, Sploack. Good to hear from you again. And I feel the same way exactly. Thank you.
I definitely think I made a wrong decision or two in my early choices of allies, but the ending was aggravating, because apparently the only option from Russia's point of view was for us to throw the solo to him or Turkey. He never even really tried to figure out how he could get the advantage again and defeat Turkey or reach a draw.
