This video is about the game of Diplomacy, an American strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 based on the European Great Powers in the years leading up to World War I. The game was the favorite of John F. Kennedy and Henry Kissinger. Seven (7) players control the respective powers of England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey and fight for world domination (control over Europe), using negotiations, diplomatic skill, tactics, and grand strategy to establish covert deals, attack mutual enemies, and backstab established allies. A "stab" is the word for betraying your ally.
TL;DR: Diplomacy is basically Risk without the dice, or chess with seven players on a world map.

Thanks for playing! Match was a bit of the pain in the ass, but I had fun never managing to cooperate with you once. It was an honor to play with you 🫡.
I was looking at this guide again due to my first French game starting. I basically won by taking all of Italy and Turkey. England my longest ally owned Portugal, Bel and Hol, and Scandinavia. I basically only won because England waited until the last possible moment to attack me and built nothing but fleets.
LETS GO
The one issue that I have with this opening that you didn't mention is that if England makes a standard opening (ie - nwg and nth) then they're in position to support a convoy to Norway and because of your army in St Pete are more or less obligated to do that. This means that if they had been planning on focusing more on the continent and trying to, say, convoy to Belgium instead, you're denying them that option, essentially forcing England to put all of their units focused on Scandinavia and therefore fighting you. I agree that it can still work if you have Germany on side, but it essentially requires it, since now England is committing its units against you and is likely to offer Germany whatever it can to bounce you in Sweden.
Happy stabbing

I got into Diplomacy during your recent break, and watching through your back catalog has been an incredibly fun and useful experience. I credit a lot of my current obsession and rate of improvement to you.
I absolutely enjoy the alligator pick accompanied by the intro as a Floridaman. The implication that the alligator is the Floridaman doesn't escape me!
I think it's a crocodile though.
This is good stuff, I really enjoyed getting a different viewpoint after watching the Bornu perspective. I enjoyed your dynamics with Mr. Poland. It would be awesome if you could get a colonial perspective (a big one versus Poland's comparatively modest overseas investment), or the Inuit. Having a more navally based perspective, that really emphasizes the differences in sea-lanes here compared to many diplo games would be great! Also, just as a suggestion for the "like and subscribe" segment in the middle, I would suggest you make it a more mock "announcer" style bit, lean into it a bit more, "Hello, this is your regularly scheduled broadcast from the Florida-Man Ministry of Propaganda, reminding you to do your civic duty by SMASHING that Subscribe button! Compliance is mandatory." or something along those lines. Keep up the good work!
Not the fly jumpscare

I'm gonna be harsh, people doing good with Austria is less about them being good at the game and more about everyone else having less than 1 braincell people, rightly so, freak out about Turkey getting a hold of all the Balkans, but somehow they don't do that, even though the position is absolutely the same, and that is, a heedgehog that can attack and defend at the same time without worries it's stupid for an Italian or Russian player not getting Triest / Buda out of that alliance, but yet they don't and it is just so stupid "yeah sure I'm gonna let you go + 4 and with concentrated armies, I'm gonna +3 with stretched thin armies, I wonder how that will end up for me" it is just that stupid
I don't agree, but that probably won't surprise you. Skilled negotiators are good at obscuring people's sense of self-interest. I don't think Italy getting Trieste or Russia getting Budapest would make any sense for Austria, from the perspective of Austrian self-interest. It would just result in a stab by Austria as soon as feasible, and the Italian or especially Russian player would deserve it for being so unreasonable as to demand a home center for an alliance.
@@floridamandiplomacy I mean, both Italy and Russia can tell to Austria "do that or I will kill you", which is honestly very reasonable, because both in an IT or in a IR Austria will end up badly obscuring someone sense of self interest is not being a "skilled negotiatior" is that the other being a gullible moron neither is saying "well Austria will stab you" a good argument, both as Italy and Russia you want Austria dead. It's not a matter of "it won't make any sense for Austria to do so", it's more of a "do this or you die", which is a position Austria just cannot negotiate out of, and honestly it's about time players do realise that
A sensible Italian player usually does not want Austria dead in the early game, as that frequently leads to Russia and Turkey overrunning the rest of the map. I think you're looking at things in a one-sided way, and the map is more balanced than your framing suggests. A Russian who frames things as "do that or I will kill you" might very easily cement an Austria-Turkey alliance. I would bet on AT to defeat IR most of the time when those two alliances form. I should add that Italy decides to involve itself in the West a good chunk of the time too. So there are many reasons why this analysis won't hold consistently. All Austrian success does not come down to, "Wow, Italy and Russia sure were dumb" lol
@@floridamandiplomacy but they don't want Austria dead, they just negotiate how much is their alliance vital. Austria Turkey is also an alliance that doesn't make any sense for Turkey too for the same reason it doesn't make sense for Italy or Russia. Yes, it's absolutely about players being dumb because long term even if you are even with Austria in centres Austria will have them more concentrated and you will not, thus you'll be at a disadvantage Italy can absolutely threaten to split Austria, it's not like an Austrian balkan is going to end any better for Italy than a Turkey balkan, so why shouldn't they do that? On the other hand Russia doing that doesn't mean Austria will ally with Turkey, it just means that it will either be juggernaut vs AI or Austria to be split 3 ways every Turkish player does know that an alliance with Russia is far more valuable than one with Austria, and an AT means a very probable Austrian win, the Turkish player does know that and wants to avoid that
One thing I can notice about you is you are very indecisive in most your games and instead of just trying to make a decision you instead flip flop with non decisions and end up falling behind.
There's something to this, I'll admit. I was more decisive in my earlier games, and I tended to win a higher proportion.
Funnily enough, I'm no Diplomacy super-fan, I in fact kinda hate playing the game due to having backstabbery in horror, whether I do it or it happens to me. I do, however, find the strategy behind it endlessly fascinating, and your content is quite great in that perspective. Just a pretty damn good analysis of the game, one I can digest without having to actually experience the game...
Thank you for the kind comment. I am definitely going to make some more material in the next couple of weeks, and it's partially because of people like you who continue to engage with what's on here.
I must put your knowledge into my first game 😔 France looks likely to betray my trust and fleet up the med due to Germ/UK defensive pact and pressure towards Russia likely. Austria is my friend and Russia seems to want to take Turkey with us. This is just my guess going from Sprint 1901.
I'd like to see more Espionage Diplomacy in addition to more variant maps overall.

Yeah, I feel like the early army build definitely trapped you here. A fleet build would have been more flexible, though perhaps more threatening to Italy initially
The thing I don’t like about 1900 is no impassables. Switzerland and Ireland being neutral are important for balance.
This is a good point. It was a bit harder for me to put my finger on exactly what it was that was wrong with the map, if I recall correctly.
It was a nice change to have a touch of RP flavor to the diplomatic manuvering. I also like seeing a variant map and ruleset. But while it would have been nice to learn about the rules for flying units from the video (instead of the comments), the one major complaint I have is not about that but about not (always) showing the map while retelling your diplomatic experience. I had to constantly go back and forth in the video, trying to remember what was said/seen in order to get a understanding to the situation; in a few cases I simply accepted not grasping as much as I'd like, but for the most part I ended up stubbornly taking a lot of extra time to get through the videeo.
8:15 wait how did you build a fleet in Macedonia? Its not your home centre
I feel like Athens is pretty much in an impossible situation in this map since it can be reasonably attacked by every single power, even in classic Austria is safe from France and England, and Germany is safe from Turkey(and usually Italy)
Carthage, the france, just had to not piss off its brittain in rome. It failed to do that. And it became useless.
