This video is about the game of Diplomacy, an American strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 based on the European Great Powers in the years leading up to World War I. The game was the favorite of John F. Kennedy and Henry Kissinger. Seven (7) players control the respective powers of England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey and fight for world domination (control over Europe), using negotiations, diplomatic skill, tactics, and grand strategy to establish covert deals, attack mutual enemies, and backstab established allies. A "stab" is the word for betraying your ally.
TL;DR: Diplomacy is basically Risk without the dice, or chess with seven players on a world map.

I was the other player from France's Round 2 game who was his ally before betraying him for a chance at a solo (he was Russia and I was Austria). He is a very good player and he managed to immediately get the whole board together to stop me even though the other powers were really not friendly with each other or with him. But while I kept a very good contact with him during and even after the game ended, I have to say I can't agree with his line of thought. In my opinion a solo should absolutely always be aimed for if possible, and a draw should only be considered if you assess that trying to obtain a solo has a significant chance to get you a much worse result than if you go for the draw.

Any chance you could start making these videos on an easier to read board, like the backstabbr one? These are hard to read, especially on a small screen...

It's been a while since you posted, so I'm sure you must be busy. I just wanted to write a little something to say that I hope you're doing well, and I look forward to the next time you have a Diplomacy AAR!
Oh, and also, if you wouldn't mind supporting me into Munich this season that would be great. I'm totally trustworthy... :P

The retreat to Albania was not possible, there was a bounce.

France takes his care-bear stance to the point of fanaticism. It's bizarre that he destroyed Italy for trying to solo, putting himself in a position to solo, and then simply not soloing.
From a more principled care-bear stance, a good game is one where no one is ever in a position to solo. Not where doctrinares put themselves in a position to solo and then simply choose not to.
To take such stringent efforts to punish a solo attempt is, remarkable.

I mean the entire idea behind the care-bear is that stabbing allies is bad. But france was the stabbiest player here.
He didn't board-stab his allies to turn them into board-jannissaries, he psychologically-stabbed his allies to turn them into psychological-jannissaries. He turned diplomatic emotional blackmail into an art.

One other thing, the easy france dissected the entire alliance structure of the game, and how he outplayed the other players...
My rule is that only the winner gets to explain the game. But he didn't win, he drew.

Although I concider Diplomacy more interesting than Chess, I can not understand the logic behind either game. Alliances, especially at the start of the game depend mostly on who is going to talk to you first. Not to mention the strategic side of playing. I think I am missing something from this beautiful game.

It isn't just who talks first, its who makes the best move, has the best personality, and offers the most to both players. If russia is being irrational then you are more likely to attack them even if they were the first to talk

Hey, ive just been checking your alliance overview playlist since they are my favourite videos, and ive realised something. There is no video for a possible Franco-Italian alliance. Is there a reason why this wouldnt work or have you just not visited it yet?
