Steve Dinan, legendary BMW tuner and racer, is back with a new project from his new company CarBahn! The BMW M8 is already very fast, but with some of Steve's trademarked special tweaks, it becomes simply incredible. 880 Crank horsepower on 100 octane, or 825 horsepower on regular pump gas means that, with the AWD and revised suspension setup, this thing is a 9-second missile good for well over 200 mph! BUT THAT"S NOT ALL! He's revised the suspension, wheel and tire setup so it handles incredibly and the package isn't even all that expensive at under $25,000 for the whole shebang!

880hp daily driver? What a time to be alive. When I was in HS, a 500hp car was basically useless on the street. A buddy had a Cobalt SS Turbo with 400whp/475lb-ft and it was undrivable in traffic. My Mazda6S turbo was no better at only 300whp. I recently test drove a TRX and it had better road manners than an early Escalade. You'd never guess it had 702hp until you mashed it.
Buying a used car in the next 10 years is going to be an awesome time. Maintenance will suck, but the thrills will be excellent.
Seriously impressive car. I happened to sit next to Steve on a cross country flight about 10 years ago. To this day, EASILY the most interesting airplane conversation I’ve ever had.
I had a similar experience on my way back from a Grand Am race. It was Chicago to SJC. Super nice guy. Invited me to the Dinan shop to try out some cars.
Steve’s shop here in San Jose is great! He’s always done the tuning and maintenance on all my M3’s, including my current E92, and set up my son’s Mk7.5 GTI for autocrossing. So glad they’re close by!
GTI is not good for autocross lol
@@dragospahontu great call, random internet guy. I’m positive his son will stop using the GTI for auto cross now thanks to you.
@@SixSpeedSeven you really need something that's rwd for good handling
@@dragospahontu Not necessarily, fwd (GTi, FiestaST, FocusST, are very good examples.) is great for those tight corners on autocross.
@@flush_entity they can never be as good as rear wheel drive cars, it's a fact not an opinion.
The GTI is a good all rounder, definitely not an autocross beast even with modifications.
The Steve Dinan Ep of the podcast was excellent!
I left that episode feeling dumb LOL. Very informative and interesting episode for sure
@@AS-oo4gv I think we all felt dumb. Dinan dumped knowledge on the world for an hour straight, it was ridiculous. If he were inclined, the subject of that podcast could probably fill a couple engineering dissertations, earn a few degrees. But the guy just wants to make fast cars, not interested in pieces of paper.
When you caught the prius it was like the Milennium Falcon coming out of hyperspace.
The little TST Podcast insert was a brilliant idea.. If i had the money to buy and play with BMWs you best believe Steve Dinan would be my first port of call..
I'm looking at buying an M6 Comp right now... I was gonna go Dinan but now I'll prob go with his new company. He's such a legend!
@@photilal1960 I see it as going to a restaurant run by Gordon Ramsay, vs going to one he used to run and sold to his head chef.. Is it still going to be an amazing experience? Yeah, sure.. But it's just not Gordon..
@@Wirenfeldt1990 Nah that brand ruins everything it touches, Shark injector tunes got rewritten with absolute garbage, Turner silicone hoses don't even fit on the throttle body etc. ECSTuning/Turner/Dinan is crap now.
Very impressive! Would love you to do 100-200 kmh tests in your videos.
Good to see you here. Unfortunately they don’t really do tests like that. They basically review the car with one thing in mind; Matt’s ego. He states his opinion like they’re absolute or that his impression is the correct impression. Zack OTOH, smarter and much less biased. Cheers
@@razerone49 AKA facts
@@razerone49 what you see is the young optimistic guy, and the grizzled vet who’s carved in Bugatti amongst other crazy platforms. I just don’t see it as his ego show. Pobst talks the same way. He’s even more cynical if it needs it.
@@razerone49 what is a review if not a biased interpretation of how much you enjoy something? If you want to just watch some clinical evaluation of performance, this isn't the channel for you. You'd be far better off just reading a spec sheet. Most enjoyable CZcams car videos are living vicariously through the perspective of the presenter and ego is obviously part of that. (Also they wouldn't do a video of 100-200kph tests on roads where the speed limit is around 100kph)
Funny that as big as the 8 series is, it's still 2-400 lbs LIGHTER than a Hellcat Challenger.
This comment wins!!
It's so freaking big in person!
Lightest M8 is only 78 pounds lighter than the hellcat however that is for the COMP. These numbers are from C&D so realistically with tire choice, wheel choice, whatever crap you keep in the car, they both weigh about the same. Except one costs $100,000 more than the other.
I know the m8 competition is built with a carbon core which assists in structural rigidity and also decreases weight. Not sure about the regular 8 classes. That might explain why they’re so light tho

Ruf is German...technically a manufacturer

Love the Two Takes! Started listening to the podcasts recently, you guys have a great rapport and are great entertainment. Podcast livechat is the shit too! Talked me into driving a 1LE SS and I'm HYPED to order one.
The 1le is an amazing car. I owned a 2018 for 2 years and did many autocrosses and trackdays in it. You thinking of to getting manual or 10 speed?
Zach’s analogies are rapper level good, some of his jokes and play on words are so accurate out of left field.
Been watching TST for 7+ years and they’re my all time favorite duo

Title: “9 second car!”
Video: “Not a 9 second car!”
still so fuckin cool tho
Similar tuned M8s are around 9.86 and I assume this one is in that ballpark.
Matt calls anything near 9 seconds a 9 second car because of Tesla. Matt hates Tesla hard.
What an absolute wild time for cars. 800+hp is just routinely accessible now. That was NASCAR Cup Series horsepower 20 years ago, and they might live 500 miles. Now they give you a warranty and emissions certifications.
That wheels/tyre combination looks great.
The smiles you guys had and the laughing when Zach punched it😂😂 so happy I love it
Listening to the podcast then watching this vid completes the package. Very cool. New respect for Steve Dinan.
Amazing review, I love the way car also handles on the track.
Dinan sold to the Driven Performance Brands group, who then later acquired APR. Driven Performance Brands was then acquired by Private Equity group Sentinel Capital, and Dinan was moved to APR’s oversized and half unused building in Alabama. Then the whole shebang was acquired by the Holley Group in a “reverse acquisition” (Driven Performance planned to acquire Holley, but the opposite happened when the board voting rights changed as per the preference of the PE group). And now they’re a SPAC.
Sounds wild, thanks for the info
Love the drop of Steve on the podcast explaining again 👏🏻 two takes have been fire
Congrats on 1M y'all well deserved
More CarBahn Autoworks, please. I would love to see an Audi R8.
When the stock M8 Competition actually has the rated crank hp as a real-life whp number, 825 crank hp isn’t that much of an increase. It’s more like a 100hp increase than comparing the 882 100 octane number to the factory rating.
In any case, it’s an amazing platform and a great package from Dinan (CarBahn).
It’s so interesting to me how all the German car companies-and pretty much every other car company-is all in on EVs yet they still keep cranking out monsters like this. What is the average car nerd like me to make of these mixed messages?
The internal combustion engine has plenty of life left.
Brodey Dover Define “plenty”.
Gandalf721 hope you’re right because EVs are boring as hell to drive. Story after story that I read however seems to indicate the coming demise of the ICE.
Q: What is the average car nerd like me to make of these mixed messages? A: simple, the rumors of "ICE demise" has been greatly exaggerated. good or bad, the battery fires from the Bolt, Hyundai (and yes Tesla) have now set back EV adoption by at least 5 years. ALL HAIL OUR FORTHCOMING ICE OVERLORD THE CORVETTE ZO6...!!! (10/26/21)

That Steve Dinan podcast was ridiculously good, he’s such a smart guy!
This was a great video. Thing is such a beast.
Really well timed beauty shot when you came up on the Prius 😂😂
"At these speeds I am not fucking around with grip." Hell yes I feel that lol
I saw it every video but I love the chemistry between y’all
Don’t forget Dinan started as just a BMW tuner and his product was so refined that it became stuff you can get from the dealer with a warranty. I had a dinan e36 328 with a super charger for a few months back in the early 2000s ended up selling it to a customer who still has it because we do maintenance and repairs on it. Most of the stuff we have done to it over the past almost 20 years has just been wear items, bushings, pads n rotors etc. the only thing I can think of that can possibly be blamed on the power is the Guibo. Any BMW owner that’s had a few knows what it is, a rubber disc for driveline smoothness between the transmission output and the drive shaft. We ended up making an aluminum one with steel collars pressed into the bolt holes. It’s lasted over 10 years thankfully it hasn’t destroyed the drive shaft like we thought could happen. Just saying they make very well engineered products that don’t destroy the car. It has 250k+ on it last time it was in. I believe it will require a new or rebuilt engine by 300k. I’m guessing it has lost a little compression so it’s pretty old with a lot of miles but still running strong.
you could get a warranty backed supercharger on 328?
The m8 is the bmw that should be their super car. It's my favorite looking bmw thats out
Their supercar should be mid engine, just like the M1 from decades ago.
This is "just" a GT, an intercontinental Autobahn bullet.
@@jareknowak8712 M1 was supposed to be a Lambo but they were down on money.
they should have thrown the s85 V10 in the i8 body and called it the new M1
@@papa_pt S85 is a TERRIBLE engine. I'm sure there's something else they could've used though.
@@jalenad11 nah it's one of the greatest street motors. People usually treated it like garbage, no warm ups when it's clearly an exotic motor with very tight clearances.. I drove one ten years ago and never forgot. F1 tech comes at a cost . Rod bearings (which I assume ur referencing) cost 2k incl labor

I’d love to do a cross country speed run in this thing. Not a huge fan of the looks but I’d love to open her up on a nice long country freeway!

👍
It’s the giggle on initial launch that got me haha
Love those canyon roads and damn those views!
Good to see you're both reviewing tuner cars...
I learned with 650whp.. in a Mustang that too stiff is not the way to go I was running 305 square it was way too wide on the street in the front and it did skip with the shocks stiff when I soften them up it was still way too stiff.. stiff isn't better for driving on a public road it took me years to figure that out but when I did......
Steve Dinan is so freaking cool!
This thing is gorgeous as it is big! In fact, it’s huge!
Love your content we need more one takes please.

Hey Matt, great vid's. Dig those matte black Oakleys you and Zack are wearing. What lenses are those? I think I need some Frogskin lights with them
These aren’t Oakley’s they’re Dillon Optics. They’re the only glasses you’ll find with the matte lenses like that. They’re super nice glasses.

Is Zack rocking the Dillon - Ryder’s in the brushed black? I’m really liking whatever he’s wearing and needing a new pair as my Drakes and Colts are getting a little old.
Is this the newest 850...Sort of confused on the 850 or the M8 because there was a car that resembled the 8 before it came out
Patiently waiting for a review of the new Ducati Monster. I see it hanging around
I like the little squat it did just before he took off.
I love Steve Dinan's products.
How much on the standard California 91 octane ? Can't get 93 here.

Anyone know if carbahn actually holds up to their warranty
You know this thing is a missile when they both giggle on launch!
That lizard on the right at 6:47 nearly became flatmeat.
What brand is that those sunglasses ya wearing?
Dig the polo, Matt.
My buddy Ozzy has the first carbahn M5 comp tune.
Maybe it’s just the large hood, but the POV just looks like a video game. Haha
Will it do e85?
Full suspension as opposed to what?
The nicest other mod for an M5/M8 is addressing the temperamental launch control. These cars are meant to beat all but a select few in drag races. Does Steve Dinan have a fix for that?
Holy moly that is a sweet ride. And I am an Audi guy.
After driving a 2017 M6, i can only imagine the monster this M8 is.
Actually the driving experience should be very similar, simply because the engine is the same S63 4,4 litre V8 unit and the weight of both cars is around the same.
The M8 is faster, because it's 4WD , while the M6 was RWD, hence it can launch itself a bit faster than its predecessor.
But at the end of the day, 0-60 times aren't the most important thing on the world, and that's why I would prefer a manual F12 M6 over a brand new M8, even though it will be faster to 60 MPH with a whole second or so.
@@lililiil244 it’s not the same engine lol
OOO That nasty!
So a stock M8 and THEN taken to Dinan and all the upgrades added after??
How would this car do on Sorted?
The speed this thing carries looks mental
Steve Dinan...? sounds like i need to start listening to the Podcast. names like Schnitzer, Racing Dynamics, and DINAN were what turned me on to BMW's 30+ years ago.
This is an amazing machine. Stunning to look at and drive and you can take the whole family or a bunch of friends. OR perhaps the Swedish Bikini Team?
Coming from the E39 community, Dinan mods/philosophy was always “street-friendly/OEM+” which works for the street. My E39 M5 with Dinan sway/camber/springs made a 4000lb car feel… 3700lb lol. Sounds like he’s doing similar things with Carbahn.
As someone with a Dinan S2 E39 M5, I can't believe how much of a difference the mods make when you're pushing the car while still feeling like a friendly daily driver the rest of the time. My only complaint (and it's a small one) is the new LSD they installed. It delivers more torque to the road, but I do have to shift a lot more often at low speeds.
I'd love to get a new M car and have carbahn go to town on it.
@@printertoner The stock diff has great gearing for the S62. But "shifting more" is a blessing in the world of tall gearing manuals. I have a 981S and second gear tops out in the 80's. I wish I could shift more. Meanwhile, the E46M and E39M are really nicely geared for the street.
I wonder what it would make on E85
If only the American highway speed limit was 150 mph, this would be my first choice of a GT car. It can actually carry something and plenty of luggage for two people. Unfortunately those kind of experiences are unknown to 98% of the American public these days. A true GT cars the way to go. I never will fly commercial airlines again.
With all the talk about how great the plaid is, this thing is just as fast and would walk a plaid on the track
🔥🔥🔥
DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see you cutting to photo's to pass the Prius ;)
7:46 - I hope you guys know that ceramic brakes aren't always the best for the road. They reduce brake fade by being able to soak up higher amounts of heat - so you can use the brakes for longer, but I'm not quite sure they posses any advantage in actual stopping power. Just able to endure a lot more of the same thing before they require a break. In fact, I've heard that ceramics can be bad for the road because if you're not actively using the breaks and maintaining a good operating temperature then they will actually have less stopping power than steel brakes which are able to work better at lower temps.
Steels will always stop you when you suddenly require them. Ceramics may not give you the braking force you need if you're suddenly required to use them and you haven't got them up to temp yet.
Currently owning a M8 and having owned a M340i (the M8 having Ceramics and M340i steel) the M8 stops way better than the M340i even after not using the brakes for a while. And the Ceramics most definitely are better than steel brakes as far as stopping power goes.
Plaid review coming soon I hope!
