- Steve Dinan is one of America’s most legendary tuners, having established himself as a builder of ridiculously fast and reliable BMWs. He’s since sold his company, did a stint with an endurance team, and is now back with CarBahn Autoworks. Steve brings his 900bhp BMW M8 down to Rob’s shop and gives him a chance to experience how to gain big power without losing reliability and comfort.

I think it would have been better if you would have drag race it special against the Porsche 911 Turbo s. Now if I do get a BMW I would like the old man to tune my BMW but I would have loved to see it drag race so therefore I will count this video as a waste. 02-18-24

Crazy how far we’ve come. I remember my dad’s e39 M5 with Dinan S1 pack making less than half this cars horsepower. That car was crazy fast already so imagining this one is absurd.
I am more impressed with the suspension work though. That car is like a ship, but how flat that is turning.

You could totally spin this off into a podcast where you deep-dive with each of these people and get super nerdy. I didn't know of Steve before this and I don't have a BMW, but I feel like I could listen to him talk for hours about pretty much anything. Loving this series Rob, super happy for you and your success.
In my time of working at BMW I've driven a few Dinan tuned cars. One that stood out to be greatly was an M2competition. That car was insane. The handling difference it had vs your regular M2 comp was incredible. And the difference it had to any other car was nothing short of miraculous the way it handled and put the power down while also feeling like a normal car in the interior, I didn't want to get out. I'll always remember that car.
I never knew that Steve dinan was american... As a import boy I always just thought he was German. 👍👍👍 Respect to my American tuners.

Where we have an army of nerdy engineers, who want to make their fast as Heck BMW's into "racecars in business suits." 🧐 And damn, I will admit, Steve Dinan can absolutely NAIL that goal. He unleashes some of the hidden power, adds more control, and suddenly the car can outperform virtually anything you come across. 💯

That idea for using the bump-stops as stiff progressive springs to let you get away with softer main springs is goddamn genius

Ryhmes better with Autobahn which is the word association he is playing with. And it seems the guy really knows what he is doing. Carbahn sounds terribly tacky for what he is doing.

The Dinan name has been held in a place of respect, possibly reverence in my life since the late 20th century.

I've had a few BMWs over the years, and turned to Dinan for my tuning needs. Always thrilled with my purchases. I think I first bought a Dinan product for an E30 M3 I got to enjoy for 10 years. Tracked the crap out of it in NorCal at Sears Point mostly and just loved it.
Your's is a new name to me Rob Dahm, but one heck of a job here in this package. The Top Gear brand is the Shiznit, so I ain't surprised.
Well, except for Clarkson. What a sour grouchy misanthrope is he. But I love the bloke anyway. lol

We used progressive bump stops on hydrolastic Minis in the 70’s as part of the springing.

Remember when Scott Pruett/Memo Rojas and Ganassi was winning the Rolex series? That was Steve's engines...then Steve Dinan and Chris MacNaughton @CarBahn walked me through my M2C S55 6sp Tune (570hp/574tq)-Amazing reliable power. I did have to upgrade to 295/265 on BBS wheels to assist with traction. My E46 M3 6sp also has their suspension and exhaust. They are legends in hi performance perfection.

The BMW M8 Competition has a raw feel that complements its sporty abilities. It's a rebel but also a law-obedient citizen. It's louder and more aggressive than in the past, but something is missing here. From a dynamic point of view, the car isn't that different from the M-tuned M850i xDrive. They have too many things in common, and Jeremy Clarkson thinks it's a problem.
Steve Dinan is an absolute legend! I have been reading about his tuned BMWs since the Car n' Driver articles in the late 80s. If those around him have any sense, they will hire a videographer to follow Steve around, during 'working hours' (genius doesn't sleep, so this might end up being 16 hr days!) to record the practical knowledge (that's called wisdom), the experiences and the vision of this automotive pioneer... so that this invaluable info n' experience isn't lost forever, but preserved.
Well, that would get super annoying for Steve, without a doubt... so maybe, just 9am til 6pm, Mon-Fri, for a year. Yeah.

I needed a big diaper on a test drive with Steve offered in a stage 3 M5 E39, Steve hit 185+ mph on a Scotts Valley back roads, I was scared and sold! Glad your back Steve....let's do it again!
Exactly, first mod I did to my car was to install whiteline street/racing suspension, best decision I made. Power performance came later in stages.

I had an E36 with a Dinan tuned ECU pulled from a junkyard. 🤓 I had to fiddle around with the OnBoard Computer to make it run properly (wrong fuel curve/displacement size), but that was the fastest Natural Aspirated engine I've ever driven, hands down. 💯
