    I guarantee everyone, in 10 years from now everyone is gonna talk about how amazing the M8 was. Bottom line, the M8/M5 is a more capable super car than anything within at least 50k up or down of it's price. Especially when you consider both the interior quality and driving performance.

      @666DW Před 4 lety +4

      Exactly! He slated the Honda Type R for its ‘Asbo’ looks and then complains BMW M cars are not ‘Asbo’ enough🙄.
      I think he forgets that, that is the point of its design, a wolf in a sheep’s clothing, a subtle look that belies the beast that lies within.
      Not every fast, desirable and well engineered car has to look the way Chris Harris thinks it should!

    • @666DW
      @666DW Před 4 lety

      Rubedo Alaberti agreed to some extent, but I think most manufacturers are moving towards subtle designs of their top end models. Audi are classic examples re their S3, not an aggressive looking car but very good at what it does. VW Golf R similarly.
      I’m not sure where he got his £160k price from for the M8 but I’m guessing most of that cost is due to its high spec of components like carbon ceramic brakes etc.
      The very well equipped base spec I believe is about £120k which I think is slightly overpriced, which appears to be the norm for premium car manufacturers against a competitive consumer market that demands price incentives to buy (BMW X3M springs to mind), call it clever marketing or cheapening of the brand, whatever anyone thinks, BMW are selling cars and making profit and that is all they care about.

      @@666DW two things. He's firstly talking about track and camber and ride height. Not stick on wings and fake aero nonsense. And secondly, the fact that a 520d M sport looks almost identical bar some exhausts and brakes to an M5 these days. BMW (and AMG and RS to an extent) with the cooking models getting the mutton dressed as lamb treatment have diluted the specialness of the flagship models. For us car enthusiasts, it's a bit sad, but for the mainstream vanity purchaser who wants a driveway ornament, they've nailed it.

    • @666DW
      @666DW Před 4 lety +1

      Chris Hyman a well worded reply👍🏻
      However, is it possible to manufacture ‘cooking’ model’s for everyday use given the state of our roads?
      I’d be more inclined to comment that the stripped out versions like the M3 CS would be for those seeking everyday/track day cars.
      I agree with your use of the vanity purpose though as it appears looks account for everything, no matter what you buy.

    You NAILED it, bruh: "The M cars should be INSTANTLY recognizable from half a mile away." None of this current crop of BULLSHIT comes anywhere close to being that. The M8 Grand Coupe concept car was EXACTLY that -- instantly recognizable with the yellow lights and vicious stance. Then they watered down the production car LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO.

    So true on the road presence on these cars. My co-worker bought a 4 door M8 - she sent me a pic and I had no clue it was an M car. Styling is terrible. There are many other cars I'd prefer in that price range. I also disagree with Chris with the traction control comment. I think people should be able to enable it or disable it in RWD mode. Even with it on, a rear drive car will behave differently than an AWD car.

    I love the entire 1 series coupe/cabrio line. I’ve wanted one for ages and have finally got a straight six N52 cabrio, if I get some 1M bits it would be perfection. It’s just the right size, so balanced, so easy to safely drift, only problem is the steering is a bit over-assisted.

    Chris is spot on concerning his opinion of the new M cars. I totally agree with him on the 2011 1M as well as the 1986 M5 as well. Big power and big dimensions do not place most cars at the pinnacle of the “fun to drive” world. They can have their “1000” hp and 4000 lb. cars, I’ll take a car that’s much lighter, more nimble and has an engine that can be redlined on the road any day.

    Funny he mentioned how the M5 looks like a 5 series. Someone came to my barbers the other month and began talking to the barber about his new car, I looked outside and it was parked a little distance away, it was a 2020 5 series, as a car person I thought nice car. Only when I got outside did I realise it was actually an M5 competition 😂 To me, spending that much on a car should blow you away and it even slipped under my radar and I'm crazy on cars

    Hmmmmm. While I don't disagree with the sentiment that a £165k BMW coupe is not worth that cash etc.; I do have an issue with the assertion that we were spoilt with the original 8 series cars! Cars that were universally panned by the motoring press in their day (too heavy, too complex, underpowered, too expensive, uninspiring to drive on European roads)!
    Perhaps we need to go back to some older, wiser heads who've been around long enough to recall the past...🤨
    BTW, while lots of people are lamenting Chris being on Top Gear because it's like he's been gagged; I do not. Because there has to be ONE person who isn't a plank of wood sounding like they're on Home and Away reading a piss-poor script...I'd have him on my imaginary re-vamp, but with some other real enthusiasts like Harry Metcalfe (who despite being very rich, still manages to talk like a human who doesn't take money for granted...).
    Of course the kind of show I'd make could NEVER be on the BBC (berks-because-Cambridge uni channel), where everyone has got their jobs because they've moved to Islington after an Oxbridge chaps introduction...

      60 in the 2.XX seconds - and quarter mile 10.7/8/9 seconds, 650+HP stock in reality, and is faster than a M4 GTS on the Nurburgring stated by BMW? I say this is at a ok price point. Sat inside one 4 months ago and it was by far the most excellent interior I’ve been in and I have been in many. It’s not S class or Bentley level, but i wasn’t expecting that from a car that does 60 in 2 seconds and nearly 190MPH.. if you think about it, it’s in its own class, S class weighs too much and a Nissan GTR doesn’t have interior quality. The closest thing to the M8 right now overall is that new Mclaren GT. The M8 was never a 7 series coupe, that what people tend to mix up. The M8 is it’s own kind of car and no it’s not based on the M5, that was completely wrong from Chris, what he should of said was that it shares the same concept of the engine and power distribution. The M8 is shorter than the F90 and F10 even the M6.
