The new, controversially-styled BMW M240i is objectively a very good car. It is quicker in a straight line than last year's M2 Competition, thanks to the (for now) standard X-Drive AWD system and wide torque band. Its adaptive suspension offers a wide spread of performance in the canyons vs. luxury on the freeway. And the automatic gearbox, in most situations, shifts smoothly and directly. But is it the drivers car we want from the 2-series? Is BMW taking the 2-series in the right direction? Matt and Zack hit the canyons to find out!

The All-New BMW M240i Gets Bigger, Smaller, Faster, and Number All At Once - Two Takes
#BMWM2
#bmwm240i
Would you rather drive this or an M2? Why?
Drive M2 cause it's an experience. Own I would take the M240i provided I can fit...6'4" here..
M2 because I have one. While I admit the B58 is better than my M2’s N55, I like my M2 for the better handling since I actually track my M2. If I were to switch to a B58 car I’d rather get the Supra.
This is a better used value over the m2. Before the market went nuts I got my m240i with 11k miles for 29k. Find me one M2 selling for that price, lol. Compared to my F80 M3, I don’t feel like you’re missing much other than slightly numb handling over the M cars.
Honestly, the AWD and less "special" BMW sounds like a good Audi alternative for a winter fun car or daily where you might not want to beat up an M2 or E9x/E46 M3.
I think I am going to be one of those curmudgeons who just always will prefer an E 46 or E 92 at the most recent… Every other iteration of the three and four series appears bloated and over tech’d. I remember from when I first began passionately following the Car world in 1998 or so, eagerly anticipating what styling BMW or Mercedes will come out with for the next generation… Now I just dread it. 😩😩
YES! Does the intro suggest that you guys are considering to review other people's cars again ? If so I am extremely happy to hear that.
Sounds like it. I'm excited to see that.
Sketchy tuner cars FTW! 😄
Ditto! I can't wait to see their impressions now that they've brushed up their style since the last time they did em.
100% yes! Zack will be jumping back in fan cars and Matt will be driving select shop-owned cars.
@@TheSmokingTire hell yeah! /TUNED
*the BMW 135i was the perfect size, I hate how they keep making them bigger, soon 2 series will be as big as 3 series* lol..
It already is. I bet you this is as big as a E92 3 series coupe.
You can’t even tell it’s bigger driving it. it drives light. Be happy it isn’t a full ev yet. Could be way worse
@@Unicornpirate It is heavier but faster than my 335is.
@@machtschnell7452 Man i had a 335is too what a Fkn beast that was w the dct and minor tunes. Sadly none of the 2011-2013 can compete w these new cars-stock speed wise!

What he said
spot on
In Europe you have 3 different 3-series to chose from:
1. The coupe
2. The Grand-coupe
3. A FWD minivan???
*4 different 2-series: Coupe, Gran Coupe, Active Tourer, Gran Tourer
... a 7-seater fwd 3-cylinder diesel automatic minivan with 95 hp if you wish
Nice one. I bought last year the predecessor M240i (F22 Coupe 2020) RWD. I test drove the new one but in my eyes the older one (F22) looks more like a bmw than the new one does - the new looks more Japanese to me. I also got the M Performance Front lip and the Carbon Wing which in my eyes make a huge difference - the front looks more like the older E92 M3 with the lip. The RWD and the less weight made me go for the predecessor - 100%.
Cheers form Germany
I have a 2017 M240i x-drive. They are giving me offers to upgrade but i'm not sure. I worry that the new car would lose some of the "go cart" feel you get in a physically smaller and lighter car. I haven't seen a new one in person, but based on recent cars, the styling could have been a LOT worse, so its an attractive package overall. I do like the previous look though. Understated enough to go under the radar but has lots of subtly aggressive accents when you really look at it, like the lovely line on the side that pops in certain lighting situations. More power is always nice, but I don't think i've ever encountered a real world situation driving it where I thought "you know, what I really need is more power". With AWD, it launches like a rocket in any weather, and I can play in the snow with it too.
Agree.
I am already missing the older gen looks for all the BMW cars. The current looks makes the cars a lot harder to uniquely identify them as BMW other than the oversized grill. Man… what happened to their design team?
@@Tunnelsnakes I get your Opinion, but they were stuck in terms of design… there would have been nowhere to go.
@@gunterlauch2264 Sorry, but I disagree with that statement. You can just search up ‘BMW redesign’ on CZcams and you even have non-BMW designers draw up better designs and fixing the looks. Also, you don’t have to always change up the aesthetics formula, sometimes it’s just good to look classic and timeless. I mean just look at the Porsche 911 line of cars. In other words, you don’t HAVE to make the changes drastic to have good looks; what they did here was they did just that while compromising aesthetics.
I just ordered one in the Portimao Blue w/cognac leather interior and got huge discount (military overseas) at 10% off ... with all the options sitting at 48k. It was time to upgrade from my Mk 7 GTI and just turning 50, I needed a more middle-age car. Something tells me I'm going to miss my GTI but when I test drove this car a couple of weeks ago ... I was blown away by the power of that B58 engine! Not to mention the adaptive suspension was nice. Looking forward to this car!
I really like how you spent more time discussing your assessment on the car at the end 👍
So this (relatively) small car is nearly 4000 lbs??? That Is insane.
Which is weird. The F22 240i (which has the same engine as this and comes with a stick and rwd) weighs less and has better back seat headroom
@@Unicornpirate cost cutting
Auto boxes and AWD drivetrains are heavy.
AWD always adds a bit more weight. But it seems to not hinder the performance seeing how nimble it is at 4,000lbs. Bravo, BMW.
@@Unicornpirate safety regulation
At 6'2, I could sit in the back of an E82 and F22 quite comfortably. This being smaller inside whilst being bigger and heavier on the outside is literally the opposite of what BMW was supposed to do. The G87 M2 6MT will be the one to get; not this AWD slushbox thing... Oh, wait, the M cars are now AWD slushboxes, too.
I can see why Matt paid the premium on his Museum Grade E46. BMW is reentering their Chris Bangle era of ugly again.
The RWD model for the M240i should be coming soon and the new M2 is still going to be RWD, straight six, and will also be getting a manual so not all hope is lost
@@XavierEyez This car has nothing at all to do with Bangle.
@@basithph8958 Yes but it will also be $70k where the previous one could be had for low to mid 60s.
This is made to daily drive, it’s meant to do a little bit of everything, which the other cars can’t. Its not a fucking m2 competitor. It’s a great grand tourer with some sportiness
The front end looks pretty goofy in lighter colors.
The baked in black side skirts look bad on the side.
. And the tailight design/rear overall are a disaster, imo. Already needs a refresh. M2 will look better I’m sure.
The entire BMW design department needs a refresh
I think the biggest shame is getting rid of the angel eyes.
I think what I learned from this video is that the Civic Type R is way more impressive than I thought. I did not expect it to be 6 seconds faster than this car on track.
The Type R is amazing handling wise. You can’t even tell it’s FWD most of the time. I have a m240i and I have to give it to Honda. They made an amazing performer right out the box.
Caveat to the C&D times that should be mentioned: all of the BMWs arrived with only ONE set of tires. So they were extremely limited in terms of grip and track time/lap attempts. There is definitely time to be gained for every model. The Civic Type R is extremely impressive, though.
In Type R's case blame the lsd for the lap times, without it, it'd be several seconds off pace
Type R LE also has Cup 2 tires vs one set of PS4S.
@@OleMisss Correct.
I got the OG 1 series as 2 door coupe (3100lbs) and 5 door hatch (2777lbs). Both are perfect dailys with room in the rear for adults to sit comfortably and enough head room in the front for helmets. With the G42, the 2-series usability went from like an 8 down to a 4. Performance is killer though 👍
i wanted a small weekender. went with a e82 135i msport. love it to death minus max tire sizes and no lsd. fun cheap fast bmw.
@@robertpurvis6106 100%!
Get an lsd! It transforms the car massively and counters the tire size deficit a bit.
I just saw one of these in the wild. That purple is unbelievably beautiful.
I really think y'all need to revisit the Alfa Giulia sport (now the Veloce for 2022). I remember you getting the non-sport version back in 2017-18. I cannot tell you how much the seats and settings make a difference. Starts at $51k now as well. Would be interested in hearing thoughts on both RWD or the AWD versions.
We have asked Alfa for a press car several times but the fleet is currently empty. :/
I bought a 2019 Ti Sport off-lease and absolutely nothing else in the small RWD sedan segment feels better to drive
I have a 2021 awd Ti sport with 27,000 miles. A few electrical gremlins that haven’t slowed me down and one headlamp replaced due to condensation. More fun to drive than a BMW or Merc. 30 mpg on the highway. The only time I miss more power is at triple digit speeds.
I'd love to see that. Most slept on sports sedan currently for sale in my opinion.
When will BMW stop calling 4 door cars a gran coupe? It's such an idiotic name, if I read coupe and it doesn't have 2 doors then you screwed up.
sloping roofline is a coupe
Unless they name it "notaCOUPE"
@@pettersaethre "A coupe or coupé is a passenger car with a sloping or truncated rear roofline and two doors."
You forgot about that second part of the definition.
Great review gents. I have one on order. I wanted an all around all weather vehicle. This seemed to be a great blend of performance and cost. So note to self: m performance brake upgrade, check
It’s really amazing how BMW continues to put out so many vehicles that are completely visually uninteresting.
they sell a shit ton of vehicles. They must be doing something right
@@user-le8kv4cr3f I think you might be proving my point. The F-150 and Corolla are massively popular vehicles that are visually bland. For BMW, the last beautiful vehicle they made was the Z8. In my opinion, that’s one of the most amazing looking cars this century. In the current lineup the i8 looks nice, but overall it’s kind of bland as well and that’s reflected in the resale value. The M sedans all look very similar (I can’t tell an M3 from an M5 at a distance). I’m not going through every product line they have.
@@RyanHarris77 you know what they say about opinions lol
@@RyanHarris77 what bmw should be doing is getting the z8 out again or close to it, and make retro models with design from the 80`s and 90`s. Don`t think they would have any issues getting rid of them
@@RyanHarris77 like the other guy said, opinions.
And btw you mentioned the i8, the i8 to me is one of bmw ugliest cars lol,
I dont see how people like it.
Thank God!! You guys are finally going back to what made this channel interesting and going to be reviewing peoples modified cars. I don’t know why you stopped doing what made the channel different in the first place?
Because people were bringing sketchy cars and Matt values his life. And everyone used to hate on Zach so they stopped.
Really cool color, that's about it. As a BMW fan this car doesn't do it for me at all in the looks department.
I definitely read it as “Num-Ber” before realizing it was “Numm-er”…
Matt and Zack really out here making me feel like an idiot on a Wednesday morning 🙃
Love the recent openings of the videos where Matt and Zack are just confused with something in the car. Keep it up fellas
You guys have some beautiful shots in this video great job! As someone who lives in Florida with all strait roads I am so so jealous of these roads.
Got mine in April 2023 in Thundernight with new screen (i prefer simplicity of old screen). BWM seem to forcing people to increase the likelihood of having an accident by moving their gaze to look for controls. They also ditched the hand friendly gear lever, to an annoyingly small thing, and again, requires you to look for it rather than intuitively grabbing it. Ergonomics and safety anyone? Should be a law to keep common controls physical (especially in sports cars) and not force a drivers gaze to look away to fiddle about.
Voice controls are NOT that good or reliable to jump in with two feet. Ever seen a car reviewer being interrupted by "Hey BMW" AI voice mid review? That's my point right there!!
I own a 19’ m240i and I personally love this new generation. The hate isn’t warranted.
As a M240i RWD 6spd owner who adores his car and is just about done paying for it, it's time to start looking for something else this year. The new M240i is much faster, but nothing else about it is great. And it won't be on my list of potential new cars because there's no manual available. So, it looks like this year, it'll be a 718 4.0 GTS or maybe, maybe the M2, depending on how foolish the grill looks.
That GTS 4.0 is an absolute winner.
the new G 2 and 4 series tossed classic BMW design out the window for the rear ends, at the cost of decent rear head and leg room.. while becoming heavier at the same time 😐
What's with this heavier shit? Those cars absolutely kill im the handling and driving performance, what's the problem?
@@stevem2323 I'm saying if you're going to make a car larger and bulkier at least increase the amount of usable space there is. Similar to how the F 4 series had about the same amount of rear leg/headroom (if not more) as the 8 series despite the smaller wheelbase and footprint. Because of those Mustang haunches
They perform well despite their weight like all the insane super SUVs, they'd do even better -200lbs
@@papa_pt Space angle i agree,.
Depending on the M2 price, this looks pretty attractive for the price IMO. Throw a few mods on it and its probably really fun to live with everyday regardless of the weather.
My biggest gripe is how much bigger and heavier the new one is, yet the rear seats are far less usable. The last one could actually fit 2 adults comfortably.
Went from a 3500lb 4-seater to a 4000lb 2+2.
@@The_Stanman exactly the M2 reminded me of a modern day E46 or E36 in regards to size. That it could be either a daily driver or a street legal track car
@@The_Stanman weight doesn’t matter if you can’t feel the difference, which you can’t, this drives small.
@@K1ng1995 m2 is far from a street legal track car lol
@@The_Stanman I have a previous gen 2fer and can say it is not “comfortable” for two adults in back. Unless the driver is hugging the wheel and the passenger is banging their knees on the glovebox.

"Is 'Scrotum Stomp Purple' still available?"
"But, of course."
"Excellent."
Literally just had the need to buy luggage today. And perfect timing because i just got my set thru you, thanks guys. Oh yeah, wil check out the new 2 series
I love BMW and the last gen M2CS is a dream car for me, but... the review seems to say that apart from the looks, steering, brakes, weight, interior room and lack of a manual transmission the new M240i is a *good* sports sedan? This seems like a great 'hot' daily but I wonder if I would feel let down when I got to the canyons. M2 all day for me.
I recall when the F87 M235i was released and the same question was asked - do you really need an M2 over an M235i? The answer was, yes, you do.
I would hazard a guess that the same answer will apply for the G42.
We are there folks. Slap a Hyundai badge on this and it would be an offense to Hyundai. "Ultimate driving machine" reduced to an empty marketing slogan.
Yup. BMWs start at $90k now. I’d still have an X7 or B8 Alpina, X5m50 or M550. That’s about it. This brand is gone.
I have an M2 competition manual in HS, and I don't feel like I should've waited for this car. I'm interested to see what the next M2 will be like, though.
If you like your BMWs made in Germany instead of Mexico you definitely should not have waited for this car.
A 0-60 sprint in three and a half seconds? Good grief. When bmw wants to they can really make an absurdly fast car.
Last 2 coupe looked a lot nicer. The proportions look.... off, and the lights are hideous. Not a fan.
Would be interesting to compare the rwd M240i to this X Drive
You guys have the most insightful and cerebral car reviews of any channel! Really enjoyed this review.
If you ever need more content topics, you might want to consider doing long term reviews, where you discuss the repairs, rattles (or lack thereof) of these same cars after they’re 2 years old. Might appeal to those of us who prefer to buy slightly used cars (new enough to still be under 3 year factory bumper to bumper warranty, but no longer command the brand new car price).
Between this, the XM and the M4 it clearly shows that their designers can't do futuristic design.... but somehow Hyundai did it with the Ioniq 5.
The last and current head designer of Hyuandai/Kia, came from BMW and VW/Audi respectively
I rode in an Ioniq5 taxi today. It was nice
Any chance I can get an ID on that porsche painting/frame in the wall during the ad?
You've done the Z4M Coupe twice now but two considerations make me think it could be worthwhile to do again. The first being the affordability factor of them, which is weird to say. But for sub-$30k the answer for 2-door, 2-seat FR coupes is this or a Nissan Z pretty much these days. If you don't mind a back seat the GR86 and Pony cars can enter the conversation potentially, but those are either substantially larger or substantially less powerful. The second consideration would be how Matt feels about it now, considering he owns the engine via his new-to-him M3. Does sports car engine in a sports car make for a more fun formula? The M3 is far more livable, but I wonder if he thinks the Z4M Coupe even compares at all in fun/sport factor. I come to LA in mine often, and can email more details.
Show me where you can find an E86 M Coupe for under 30 grand lmao. Not rhetorical, i could really use this information.
Regarding the confusion @ 9:17 the seat probably was automatically adjusted for the sake of driver visibility in accordance with the settings Matt Farah had selected.
OG M2 allday!!
Probs my next car ...beautifully proportioned and great daily and canyon druver.
Phew Matt making me nervous on this curvy road….flying! You can always tell when he likes a car, because he rips.
Great video. I have seen a few driving around town, good looking car. Regarding pricing, seems like it jumped up a lot. In 2016 I bought a fully loaded M2 manual for $54,555 which was only $10 more than my fully loaded 2011 1 Series M. Coincidence? I think not. I can’t wait for the new M2, in manual of course
Don’t bring up the Car & Driver lightning lap without mentioning that the test car provided for that occasion had only one set of tires, and run-flat tires at that! Every other car at that test was optioned out with the best tire package available for each respective car. Someone at BMW really dropped the ball on that one!
Type R is still a better track car, the m4 did fine on the 1 set of tires ....soooo
Ahren… The M4 was not among the cars at this years lightning lap event. You might, of course, be referring to the M3 (more similar than different), and yes it did do well, and it did so with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, I should add. I’ve been a Honda fanatic for my entire life. Eight out of the nine cars I’ve owned in my lifetime have been either Hondas or Acuras. Not a whole lot will dull my passion for that company (not even Honda’s track record with the enthusiast crowd over the past 20 years). Yes the CTR is a better track car and it should be given that’s its very purpose. But as a daily driver it is an epic failure when compared to M240 (which despite being an incredible performer is amazingly comfortable). You can compare them all you like- but it’s apples and oranges.
You guys do a very good job on your car reviews but the price of that M2 40 I is a fully loaded vehicle. You could get one for $49,700 I just specked an ordered one . The car is amazing great bang for the buck
As a previous M235i owner - not sure on the looks of this. It looks a bit bulbous and less clean
Can’t agree more.
They partnered on the Supra, did they utilize a Corolla chasis for the Gran Coupe'?
The lack of brake power on such a fast car is something I find really unsettling. I want cars to feel like they can dangle me off the seatbelt if I press hard on the brakes, and it sounds like this car does not have that. This might just be a tuning problem, or a press-car problem, but concerning nonetheless.
That title had me all confused lol
Pretty sure no one uses 'number' instead of 'more numb'. It's not listed in the Oxford dictionary apart from a reference to numerical digits.
For those who have compared normal M suspension and M adaptive suspension, I wanted to know how good the comfort mode is? I drove the 340i with M suspension and felt it was not a comfortable ride for daily driving. I am having a tough time finding a car near me with M adaptive suspension to test drive. I am looking to get a 240i with M adaptive and will be using it as my daily. Thanks.
I've test driven it and ordered one last week. The suspension in comfort mode is smooth, and the cabin is quiet. So no doubt it's perfekt as a daily.
Time to harden up. These are vehicles meant for driving.
SUPRA faster at lightning lap than M2 competition, weighs significantly less and it's cheaper than this M240.
Last week I had my choice between the M2 or the M240i. I dumped my 2022 Z4 M40i. Of course the M2 is an amazing car. But I live in New England. No one can deny the M240i is safer than the M2 in Snow and Ice storms. Track days are not a thing for me. Have no interest and I have multiple tracks around me. Beating the crap out of my vehicles has never been a thing I do. Also I love the styling on both cars. Both of them are "Pretty Ugly"! Meaning they are Pretty and Ugly at the same time! Just like me! :)
You asked for opinions on the color...I LOVE it!
You guys are really hauling down that road - this thing is a beast!
I'm keeping my M2CS forever. 😊
I'm sorry to hear about the Porsche. You sounded like a kid getting excited for Christmas when talking about it with Jonny on the podcast. I hope they can get you another one sooner than later.
Great review, love the questions answered portion at the end!
Just that rear end alone would deter me away from spending $1 on it.
they are probably on the fence themselves, lights being a question mark
9:45 the seat rails are angled and the way the roof slopes down at the rear is what causes that.
No one has mentioned angled seat rails since the first M2.
Great Video just drove the 4 series version of this car in Germany last week. The M440I fantastic car on the Autobahn did well over 1000KM in 3 days. Really fast and stable at high speed 230KPH cruise all day. Solid brakes. Nice engine note in sport mode even if its sort of fake. BTW tried to buy the bag you showed as I need a new carry on but the discount code does not work.
I was on BMW's website the other day and didn't catch that there were two different two series and I saw a transverse engine and was wondering how that was going to work in TC racing series. Thank you for the clarification
I think I saw in one ad where you have to order a different package to get the bigger brakes, which is Bmw‘s way of nickel and dimming their customers ,charging charging for everything extra
C&D said the same thing about the brakes. They also said it could have been quicker around VIR had BMW provided tires.
The m240i was 2 seconds slower than the Civic R but the m240i in that test did not include the advanced cooling package which means it did not have the available 245 width front tires and pilot 4s. It would have beat the Civic R if they would have sent the right car to VIR. It is faster than the Civic R when you spec it the right way.
I spec'd a really good one for $53k, we almost pulled the trigger. I wish they would let us delete the sunroof like on the 230i; otherwise, a rocketship of a car for the money.
I heard you can ask for moon roof delete if you custom order with dealership (not the website) is that not the case?

It’s frustrating though that the build configurator doesn’t allow lumbar with the Cognac colored interior, only in black. Lumbar is a MUST for this old mechanic.
what was the main purpose of adding AWD? they wanted to improve 0-60 performance? differentiate themselves more against the supra? new "all-season" car market?
They feel that their AWD technology is now good enough to obsolete the RWD.... The same philosophy as removing the manual option.
Also, this car is not an M car, which means that it MUST be able to handle full power without losing the rear.
It had AWD last gen, too.
I'll wait to see what the next M2 looks like...pricing seems reasonable but styling just doesn't do it for me
