All the mistakes I did with my firstborn when it comes to sleeping, I fixed with my second born. First one I used to lie down beside her, for the time she fell asleep. She was in our bed for almost 7-8 yrs, refusing to lie in her own bed in her own room If we put her in her bed, after she fell asleep, we woke up in the morning, with her between me and her father.
I used this method with my second one. I used the interval 5 min, 7 min, 9 min, 11 min. Set timer on my phone. Didnt go myself or dad and the first one. They had problem with her crying, but I just decided, no one goes in, beside that interval. I went in after those minutes. Didnt pick her up, just talked, and gave her a kissy and went out again. I did this routine for like 3-4 days. After that she fell asleep on her own. Those intervel were the only one I used.
After those 3-4 days, she fell asleep in her own bed, in her own room, on her own. I bealive she was around 6 months.

My oldest child was the same. By 6 months she was getting up every couple hours for a change and a bottle. And my sleep was suffering. She stayed up until 12am most nights and my mental health was suffering because of lack of sleep. After the Ferber method, she didn't wake at night. It was so nice. Now she's 4 and has no issues falling asleep or staying asleep.

sxtx have you had a baby tell you they were hungry every two hours? My baby slept through the night very early on. He had enough calories during the day so, no, he wasn’t hungry. You cannot assume that a baby who wakes every two hours is doing it out of hunger... there are many things that come into it such as sleep associations i.e. wanting to be re rocked or rocked all night. Don’t know about you but that would drive me insane and I would be a totally shit parent as a result.

My husband and I just started this method with our son who is almost 12 months. We went 2 weeks with barely any sleep and then came across this. The first night we did a modified method of going in at 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 5 minutes and again 5 minutes. A total of 6 times the first night. He slept through the night. I did this with his nap the next day and went in once at the 5 minute mark, he slept for 2.5 hours. Last night my husband went in at 3 minutes then 5 minutes. I highly suggest this method and to at least try it. Its worth a shot. Like she said in the video... You will probably cry the first night and possibly the second night but it gets them on a schedule and teaches them its night night time. He was so happy this morning when we got up. We normally put him to bed about 9pm and he sleeps until about 6:00am/6:30am. Happy parents, happy baby. Our routine is bath, bottle, bed. I let him play in the bath for a good 15-20 minutes which he LOVES. Daddy or I feed him and then bed. Whoever puts him to bed does the 5 minute checks on him. We do not alternate because we don't want to confuse him.

So we tried it last night with our 9 months old baby!
We gave him a bath, his bottle, read a story and put him in bed.
Explained to him that we love him and hell be sleeping in his own room and his own crib.
    We went out:
Waited 5 min - Went in - talked to him
    Again
Waited 5 min - Went in - talked to him
    ---
After 3 min - he fell asleep
    ---
Same night - At 3 am he woke up crying
We did the same steps - After 2 walk ins he fell asleep.
    ---
We will stick to this method for a few days and see how it goes.
But seems its working, and he woke up at 7 am very happy, smiling and full of energy! I really thought he would wake up and not wanna talk to me or something!
    ---
I recommend you guys try it ... But you need your husbands support!!
Coz i was literally banging my head and crying outside his room while he cried inside in his crib ...

Thank God my baby just chugs milk and goes to sleep after being full and changed and burped . Check for a diaper change and feed and burp and then another diaper change if they are still crying and bam no more crying just make sure you feed him enough so he stops crying then burp him till he burps at least twice or thrice. Just give him the bottle right when he wakes and you’ll always be ontop of it. Very rarely will my guy cry for anything else other than wanting to sleep with us or be swung in his swing or sang to but that’s only when he’s awake and bored and can’t sleep and just wants attention

WOW WOW WOW, God bless you and thank you for this instructional video. I can't thank you enough for making this video. We have been struggling with our twins over a year plus with their sleep, they were wake up up to 8 times at night and it had started to become frustrating and weighing on everyone due to sleepless nights. Watched your video two weeks ago, tried with the first twin and it worked and by the third night she was sleeping by herself. Tried with the second twin at the beginning of this week 07-03-2022 and she also started sleeping well by the 2nd night. Now they both sleep well and it feels unreal seeing both of them asleep at thesame time in a very long time. Thank you so much, if you have a donation link, I would like to donate for this help.

Hi thanks for this video it was really well explained only one important question for me my 20 month old can sleep through Almost every night but putting him down is a battle. He really resists sleep. And when I tried this method with him a long time ago he would be screaming and totally unconscionable. There is no way I can calm him down and put him down again. If I managed to do so as soon as I put him down he would be screaming all over again. Is this method unsuitable for him?

For this method a few questions. First if the baby is breastfed how do you do the feeding? Not every baby can last an entire night with no feeding at 6 months old can they? Also do you do this for naps and bed time or just bedtime at first and lastly do you have to increase the time each day or can we stick to 3/5/10 minute rule?

Just like you said, I started on a Friday night and by Sunday night my one year old was asleep LITERALLY within 15 seconds of me leaving the room, even though he was screaming and crying as I was leaving. I learned that he'd had US trained and has been playing us for months! Now it's the following Tuesday and for the first time ever I was able to put him down in his crib on his back while he was awake and he didn't cry once, even as I turned off the night light and left the room. So happy this worked! 😍

It worked with him and in 3 days he was trained....although he used to wake up once at night, not at a fixed time though...... However we got back to our city where our home is and he is just not sleeping as per how he was trained and has thrown up once or twice.... Gets up every 1 hour and the minute I keep him down he again starts to cry...... Can you please help me and find a solution.....

Baby isn't able to sleep good those nights. So did you have to bring your baby in the bed with you?

I had a son that didn't sleep through the night until he was 22 months old. This was not normal and I knew it but didn't know how to break the cycle. Every time he cried, we'd pick him up right away, soothe him, and help him fall back asleep. We crippled his ability to fall back asleep on his own. Then I saw a segment on 20/20 with a method similar to this that swore it would work in 3 nights. Intervals were something like 3 min, 5 min, 7 min, then 9 min. Stayed at 9 min until baby fell asleep. I started it that night. The 1st night was a living nightmare but stuck to it!! (so glad my husband was on the night shift...he wouldn't have been able to handle the crying). The 2nd night took only a few hours before he settled down to sleep through the rest of the night. The 3rd night, he went right to sleep and slept throught the whole night!

What do you recommend if the baby wakes up an hour later crying? Is the point not to pick up the baby from the crib unless a legitimate reason comes up? This is where my husband and I struggle. Our son typically takes 20 minutes to fall asleep but then wakes up distressed an hour later. We have no clue what to do at that point.

    • @susannebradley3382
      @susannebradley3382 Před 3 lety

This is an old comment, but you may want to try an earlier bedtime. If a baby wakes up within 60-90 minutes it often means the bedtime was too late and they're overtired. (But specifically for sleep training, I think usually if it's not a wakeup at a time you've planned for feeding, you want to handle it the same way you did at bedtime.)

I am in the first week of trying Ferber’s method. My baby is 10 months old. It seems to work on her but yes, when she stands up when crying and looking for us really beats the purpose of keeping her sleepy. We just go in when its time and lay her down everytime and pat her. It seems to wear her down and she goes to sleep. Once it took us 1 hour of back and forth but it was our worst and best was 10 mins. So keep on trying... All the best.

I know this is 2 years old but I'm going to clarify. You do two rounds of 5 min intervals, then you do two 10 minute intervals, then two 15 min intervals. If after this cycle your baby doesn't sleep, pick them up and soothe them. Feed them or offer them food and see if they need a diaper change. Then repeat once they're sleepy.

Be there for your baby when it needs you. Be patient with it. I am a 31 yo father of a 8 month old daughter (my first born) and I love her to death. I would do anything for her to feel comfortable and safe. It breaks my heart if I hear her cry or see her desperately searching for me in the dark. I immediately embrace her and talk to her gently. Never lose patience, breathe deep and smile. That helps. And if you need to: Remind yourself how much you love your child. Baby´s needs are number 1 priority since she was born, but that´s a price I am more than willing to pay as she is all I ever wanted and needed in my life. My daughter is a high-needing baby, it´s difficult but we need to work through this, because I want my daughter to be confident in her environment, feel safe and loved, empathic and have a strong bond with her.
Since 6 months now it is me who takes her to bed every evening at 7 PM. Many evenings ended there for me, but it´s ok. It´s for her. She´s more important, I can deal with jsut laying beside her and hearing her breathe calmly. And I dont even have the comfort of breastfeeding her when she´s upset. Love makes it all easier. She sleeps 30 minutes, wakes up, cries. I take her int my arms, walk with her through the dark room and sing for her like 20-30 minutes, then she hopefully falls asleep and I try to put her in bed again. If she wakes up while I try to gently put her there: Repeat.
The first months it was way harder for me because I didn´t have the "right" mindset yet and what really helped me was a trick from my wife: Imagine it was you or your partner who sits there and cries - wouldn´t you comfort them or wish someone came for you and held you?

It's on the late side but might work well if your baby's taking 3 or 4 naps. My 5.5-month-old recently transitioned to 2 naps and does really well with a 6 PM bedtime but every baby is different. Ways to tell if bedtime is too late: they take a long time (more than 15 minutes) to fall asleep at bedtime; they wake up and cry within an hour of being put down; they wake up frequently at night (more than every 4 hours); they regularly start the day before 6 AM; they wake up crying in the morning (instead of being happy); and if they're super fussy around 4-5 PM.

Took a couple weeks of her screaming her head off and sure it eventually worked, but she is 21 and has suffered from night terrors her whole life. I took a much more gentle approach and while it did take longer, mine are peaceful and solid sleepers. Ages 20, 10 & 7. Viewers please do your own research on the risks and harms on crying it out, for infants. I would also argue that exclusively breastfed babies who are six months old, may NOT be full for an entire 7+ hours.
