Thanks for this video Susan. Im currently feeding my baby to sleep as it seems to be the only way to soothe him. The holding still for 5 min technique worked wonders! Put him on the bed, pat him on the bum, he stared at me with "what are you trying this time mum?" look and fell asleep. Thanks again for sharing!

Rose M Please don’t do that to you vulnerable baby. Babies are too young and don’t have the psychological faculties to develop self soothing skills so young.
If you notice this video is all about forcing your baby to do this and that. Very unnatural. Emotionally developed cultures don’t subscribe to these shenanigans ... trying to turn babies into independent adults before they can even walk or talk right. Only in north America

I just wanted to say THANK YOU from mom to mom. Your video helped me so much with sleep training my 7 month old, I started from the first morning nap and then try the night. I followed your tips and it works like a charm ! She did skip first day first whole nap (not really skipped but cried it out) I kept her awake for half an hour and she went to sleep after. Also the first night was tough she would wake up every time she use to nurse, but I also followed your night time training tips and it was working. Next day and night was better and every next after that she would cry less and sleep longer. After 4-5 days she was sleeping perfectly all by herself all night long. And now (month later) she is doing great falling asleep all by her self, having couple good, long naps at day time and sleeping (without waking up) hole night. She is more rested and much happier and I feel like a new person, so rested and accomplished! Thank you and good luck to all mom's , trust me it is worth it (little "pain" for lot of gain for both you and the baby) !!!! :D

Hi Svetlana, oh my word... I see your post is 2 years ago, sorry but I have to ask, do you leave your baby to cry it out in the crib for the hour if she doesnt fall asleep ? or do you go in and soothe her every few minutes? and if she wakes after 10 minute nap as well...do you go in and try soothe or leave her ?
If someone else maybe can respond as well .... in desperate need.
      many thnx

Thank you so much for an amazing video! My newborn baby wasn’t sleeping during the day - almost at all, or short 15 min naps. She was so fussy. I couldn’t figure out why. Then I realized she wasn’t sleeping at all and she must have been overtired. I watched your video and I had to train her as if she was 4 months old. It worked like charm. First few weeks she only managed to sleep for an hour. Then it increased to 1.5h and now I have to wake her up after 2h nap. I had to come back on here and share my experience for new moms!

      @ellenmaes2480 Před 2 lety +12

yes! I always laugh when I see a 'sleep schedule'. When your baby doesn't go down for one of the planned naps, your 'schedule' goes down the drain. And you can be sure he won't go down for at least one nap. And even if so: they sure will wake too early for at least one of them.

    • @Momo-fx7tb

As a preschool teacher I loved this video! Its all about having a schedule and helping children learn to self soothe. A little off topic but I have seen many older children start preschool having never been allowed to cry or tantrum or more then a few minutes before the parent gives in or tries to distract. These kids have the hardest time adjusting to school life as they lack the skills to deal with the negative emotions from change , sharing and not always being able to have your way.

I started to nap training after watching this video and just have few questions.
My baby can fall asleep independently for naps with little to no fuss, however, he does not usually nap for longer than 30 minutes. He will put himself back to sleep after 15-30 minutes of fussing and will sleep for an hour. Is that consider a good nap? When he wakes up after an hour should I let him try to go back to sleep? Most of the information suggests that baby should nap at least 2 hour per cycle.
I keep his room dark, sleep sack, have white noise, small nap routine and put him down at the same time.

Man I have to say that for naps, we had to take a more gentle approach. Because we'd get in a vicious cycle where if he didn't take good naps during the day, it'd mess up his night sleep cuz he was overtired. So we had to do a gentle approach for nap training where we would try different strategies to help him fall asleep in the crib for his nap (we had to work on switching him from swing to crib). So we would try to lay him in his crib and if it didn't work, we'd go back to the swing. Sometimes it'd work, sometimes it wouldn't. But eventually it took. Then we would work on putting him in his crib drowsy but awake, but if he didn't fall asleep within 5-10min, we'd cuddle him to sleep. Eventually he'd fall asleep in his crib. It took a long time (several months) but it worked! Now he's 11 months and falls asleep easily in his crib by himself and takes great naps!

Absolutely! I definitely feel like I learned a lot through having a first baby about sleep and naps in general. I'm hoping I can apply some of the stuff with the 2nd one! Also, a lot of the stuff you're talking about in this video and your other one on sleep training sounds like what I read from a book which was super helpful- Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child by Weisbluth - was wondering if you'd heard of it.

I'm going through the same thing right now and I'm at a loss. I used to be able to breast feed my baby to sleep for nap time, but for whatever reason that doesn't work anymore and he only falls asleep in the sling. How long did you usually wait after trying to get your baby to sleep in the crib did you switch him to the sling? And at about how long did it take till he would at least sometimes sleep in his cot? Also, did you have a (loose) nap schedule? I'm at a bit of a loss here.

Hi Susan What do you do when baby wakes up in the middle of the night? Do u get baby up and feed and then put back down and let them cry till they Fall asleep? My baby eat solids now and i dont think she should need to wake up in the middle of the night to eat but i am conflicted and feed her but they she’ll just continosuly wakes up mutiple times at night to feed. This started a month ago usually she would sleep through the night but now she wake multiple times after we change to solids. What can u recommend during nights?

Hi Susan! I have a quick question...my 5 month old goes down so well for her naps but always wakes up at the 45 min to 1 hour mark! When she wakes we do not go get her but let her cry till the 1 hour and 15min mark(from her original start of nap time) to try and teacher her to sleep longer. This does not seem to be working so do you have any advice??

What do you at night when your baby wakes at almost 6 months? Do you leave him until he cries? What if he's awake because he's wet? My boy doesn't cry when he's wet or poopy, he just lays there awake. How long would you leave awake and quiet at night? I know how important sleep is and I can't sleep knowing he's awake (subconscious problem of mine). Everyone says he should be sleeping around 10-12 hours a night but what if he's in his crib for that long but has only slept 7 or 8? That will effect his napping during the day because he'll get over tired faster, right?

Hi Susan! Great videos :) So my baby is 4 months old, do you think it's too soon to start your sleep and nap training process? She's only waking once during the night for a feeding. Also, at 5 months old, how many ounces of milk were you feeding your son per feeding? I'm still doing 4oz.
    Thanks!!

Did you do any sleep training before 5 months? I read the book “Baby Wise” and so I have been doing the eat, wake, sleep cycle with my baby and she is 2.5 months. I have now run into the problem that she is only sleeping 30-45 minutes during nap and it throws her whole eating schedule off. This has been going on for a couple of weeks and I can’t seem to find the root of the problem. Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. I’m doing this method by Natalie and it’s day 2, thats day 1 for naps. Wanted to know when during sleep training the amount/duration of crying reduced. My husband is reluctant to continue with the method if my son (6 mo) keeps crying like this. I’d really like to be patient and give him a couple of weeks 😔

So I've just started sleep training last night at bedtime. The following day, I wanted to continue with it for her naps.. Is it normal that my schedule will be basically non existent until she gets the hang of falling asleep on her own?? Especially connecting sleep cycles seems to be tricky as she's just learning.. so her naps aren't those nice long naps

I've been doing nap training to my 11 months baby for 4 days. She cries from 30 mins down to 2 to 3 mins now. However, she usually plays in the crib for 30 to 40 mins and naps for only 20 to 30 mins. So she naps max 1 hour during the day for her 2 naps. I am very worried. She has signs of needing a nap, but she has trouble with soothing herself. I do not know what to do.

    Hello from Romania!
I watched all your videos on sleep training (multiple times) and I hope you can help me a bit!
We are just starting sleep training and we hit a bump: our boy flips on his belly but can not flip back on his back. What are we supposed to do then? Should we help him or just let him cry untill je falls asleep on his belly?
I hope you will have the time to answer, because this is sooooo hard as it is and this issue really gets me on the point that I want to go and just pick him up!
    Thx !

As a first time father, I am eager to get started on this training, but I noticed your's and others recommendation saying 4-6 months being the time when babies can start. Is near 4 months okay? Like 3 1/2? Also, how did your husband eventually convince you this was the right thing to do? My wife has done a lot of research as well and she is set in her ways. She disagrees with a few of your suggestions, for example white noise machine and awake during feeding, by saying they don't work.
