2017 Dodge Charger R/T Daytona Review: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

In this video I took the 2017 Dodge Charger R/T Daytona for a spin and found the good, the bad, and the ugly side of the four door muscle car.
This Charger R/T Daytona came dialed in at $45,120 and was equipped with "Customer Preferred Package 29S" that includes the black grill, a functional hood scoop, a Mopar cold air intake, the Super Track Pak, humongous 20" wheels, and PLENTY of black vinyl all over the car.
This package builds off the original R/T model, so it still has the 5.7 liter HEMI V-8 engine that outputs 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque. Attached to that engine is a Torqueflite 8 speed automatic transmission, that despite able to shift quickly through the gears, is still an automatic transmission, and therefore a big ol' minus in our opinions.

Achieved 29.7mpg @70mph for over 300 miles. 22mpg around town.

Lifelong Ford guy. I was thinking about a Daytona 392, but ran across a 2019 Daytona RT with 4500 miles for $31,500, and it looked and smelled brand new. Couldnt pass it up, I'm a middle aged man, so Im not gonna race anyone, but it's def not slow. Its very fun to drive, for a large car, very roomy and comfortable, yet responsive, and it makes a great daily driver and road trip car. A Peddle Commander makes it even livelier. First Dodge ever, and very happy with the deal I got. Still may eventually step up to the 392, but not right now.

Hey, thanks for the video! It's great to have a roaring sound when you need it, to have fun, etc, but can you drive silently in this car? When you have a headache after work and you need to have some quiet time while commuting back home, can this car provide you that? Or is it always rumbling?
You can change modes and i think it can be fairly quiet.
You launched it wrong. In launch mode, it should just sit there as your foot smashes the gas and brake held down. Nothing should happen until brake released.
It’s actually making 395hp dodge just underrated them so the people bought more 392s 🤷🏽♂️
funny thing is all of the chargers are underrated. 345 are pushing close to 400 hp, 392 are closer to 505 hp and the hellcat close to 730 hp. same thing with the torque
Why is everyone saying 375 or even 395 daytona's and scatpacks have 485 horsepower.

@WarmSoftKitty dyno at the wheel? If so there us about a 15% to 20% power loss in the drivetrain. So when you do the math it's about 402.5 at the crank
@WarmSoftKitty mate I don't doubt that I'm just going off personal experience. my bud had a stock 5.7 daytona and when he dyno'd it, the numbers were 352 at the wheels so that were I was getting my numbers from. I just got mine in yellowjacket so i might have to dyno it again to get my numbers again
Pretty good review. I agree with you 100% regarding the heated/cooled seats and the Uconnect screen. I too would prefer separate switches for those functions. In my opinion, I think too much info goes thru that info system. I've heard where other guys had the screen go blank or the updates drained their battery with the engine off. I own a V-6 Mustang at the moment and would love to trade up to a Charger. (Especially now that Ford puts plastic oil pans and drain plugs on the Mustang GT.) I just can't bring myself to trust those FIAT electronics. However, a clerk at a local gas station has a V-6 Charger. And she told me that she has over 200,000 miles on it with no problems whatsoever. Maybe I will have to pull the trigger on one?

@@jayspacelyfr No. I upgraded to a 2020 Mustang GT. However, I'll always think about the Daytona 392 I test drove. I would have probably got that instead. However, it had a sunroof and that was a deal breaker for me. Now all the Scat Packs have gone up $10,000-$15,000 in price.
Whats year mustangs have plastic oil pans? I have a 2015 mustang gt and a 2020 charger rt
@@2tooful Ford started putting them on their Mustang GT's in 2019. They also put them on their 2.7 Ecoboost and the 3.0 in the Explorer ST's. They worked out so well that they put them on the Raptor pick up's for only about 2 years then stopped. You can't really escape it. Dodge and other companies put them on the Scatpack trannies. Prices increase as part quality decreases!

Does the 4cyl feature hurt the engine long term?
There is a lot of talk about the 4cyl mode causing premature lifter failure in the cylinders that deactivate

I test drove one of these even tho it was just the 5.7 but dude those seats.... omg. They literally hug you and they're so comfortable.
The back seats have heated seats and a center console too, but that $40,000 price tag for a 5.7? No sir, I'll wait for the 392 thank you.

I've sat in a few Challengers TA 392, the front seats are like sitting on a couch.

Last fall, I test drove a Dodge Challenger TA 392 with a stick. That thing was a beast and when guys talk about these cars giving you smiles for the miles, they absolutely know what they're talking about. After the test drive, I went home in my Mustang V-6 with its 300 hp and thought I was driving a Prius. I just can't bring myself to trust a FIAT product.
A Stanton1966 I’m on the same boat man, I really want a 2015-2018 charger rt with the 5.7 but just can’t trust FCA 😢 I’ve done a lot of research with mixed results about reliability, is a coin toss
it's 395hp and 410 lb of torque not 370hp
thats for the trucks the chargers are close to 395hp and 370 lb/ft torque
@@jaikarchatha1967 its actually 370 hp 395 tq. For the challenger auto - 372 hp 400 tq. And the manual is 375 hp and 410 tq

08:06 I have not driven this car yet but can't you just put the car in sport mode and drive with the rpm's high if you want to listen to the engine? Why would you talk crap about a transmission it there is nothing wrong with it? The only problem with the transmission is you don't prefer it. Your actual problem is with Dodge not offering a manual transmission.

The complaints u had about the car are honestly really petty. So all in all i would say there isnt anything bad about the car.
