  • For the Series Finale of "GT4RS Versus" we rented out Thunderhill Raceway and brought the Track Built GT4, a GT4 RS, and a 992 Manual GT3 to race, review and compare on track! We answer a few questions, including which build is the fastest on track, which is most fun to drive, and can an upgraded GT4 stay competitive with the GT3 and GT4RS?

    I’ve got a 981 GT4 with DeMan 4.5. It was a step up from a 991.1 911S with some mods. The difference in handling from the rear engine to the mid engine chassis was mind blowing. As you noticed, it is so user friendly, not as tricky as needed to manage the 911 rear end. The 911 has a lot of understeer on corner exit compared to the GT4, a point I didn’t hear. Maybe the GT3 isn’t similar to the 911S in that measure. I have also upgraded the dampers (Bilstein Clubsport), gearing, LSD, exhaust, tires (slicks), brake pads, and more. I am not the fastest on the straights in my advanced HPDE group, but can carry more speed deeper into the corners and close the gaps. My dreams are whether a GT3RS would be worth doubling the investment. So far, sanity has held me in check on that. One guy in my group with a highly modded Cayman 4.0 has added a bigger wing and a big front splitter, and now corners quicker, leading to faster lap times. That’s been interesting to see.

    Completely disagree about your comments concerning the 992 GT3. It is without a doubt the absolute easiest car I have ever driven at the track to lay down quick times, almost too easy. So easy that it has taken some of the fun out it. Compared to my prior GT3s and RSs it’s so amazingly stable in the turns thanks to the grip provided by the front suspension. The front grip is improved for sure but it’s the stability provided in the turns which is the biggest improvement in my opinion. My GT4 RS arrives this summer, eager to compare them at track. I wonder if tires were an issue on the GT3 you were driving? Good video

    • @carhoney
      @carhoney  Před rokem +19

      My guess is you’re a more experienced 911 Porsche and track driver than we are, in which case we actually agree. Our argument is as novices the GT4RS gives more confidence and forgiveness resulting in better lap times, for the average driver, but that if you know how to drive the GT3 well, it’s the far superior car at putting down quicker lap times.

      Caymans in general easier to drive, with GT3/GT2 it's all about balancing their weight on corner entry while Caymans are just simpler and drive normal..... But once you get used to 911 driving it becomes easy to drive I have now GT4RS + GT2RS and to me GT4RS far easier to drive.... It's like you going from novice to advanced level of cornering with one being simple other being complicated and need more brain use

    Great work with this video. Your honest no hype presentation is really appreciated. The one thing that I'd like to see the most is to use the same tires on all the compared cars. It's a hard ask but I think pretty much anyone that's gone to the track and does quick lap times knows you really can't objectively compare cars with different tires especially as different as the tires on these 3 cars.
    You can have an entertaining video with subjective opinions but not a useful, objective comparison.

    Ex 911 owner, now mid engined Ferrari owner. You have to drive a 911 neatly to get the most out of it. The weight is at the back and over the driven wheels, which means you want to maximise that for lap times. Messing with the balance (as one might try with a mid-engined car) is not ideal in a 911. Drive a 911 neatly and fairly conventionally (that is, breaking early and the managing the throttle through the apex) will give you the most satisfying result - just as satisfying as trail braking in a Cayman.

My shop is telling me those are the best for the Cayman since the Goodyear supercar 3r's are not available anywhere in the country. I think those Goodyear's were on the GT3 but 20's? Very cool video. I am running the MCS 2-ways on my 718 GT4 and it really transforms the car (especially away from the track where the surfaces are not smooth) That is where you will find the most benefits of an MCS equipped car over stock. Tracks are mostly too smooth to exploit the weaknesses of the stock PASM and strut rear.
    I run 175 canister pressures and 9/9 for compression / rebound and that is a sweet combo for the street.
    Another benefit on the GT4 is going to a stiffer sidewall tire, as it gets rid of the lateral movements in the corners from the soft sidewall Cup 2's

      Yeah it’s out of control. GT4RS is still very new and not many cars delivered yet so if you wait a bit it may come down to closer to GT3 prices. It is an RS though and those two letters add a premium forever. Good luck!

    Well done lads! Really enjoyed that and the way that you put it together.
    You have now convinced me not to buy a 4RS, thanks. Basically as you stated "anyone can drive this to it's potential". It sounds easy and digital.
    Car are so vanilla these days being digital, the analog 911s were a challenge at all the times, and so much fun!
    I had a 4, and found the limits all the time, had a blast but it lacked something.....
    Had 3 GT3's and now a 992GT3 manual. I have not found the limit yet, it is a challenge, maybe that is what makes it so Fn good!

    • @carhoney
      @carhoney  Před rokem

      I wouldn’t call the 4RS digital feeling by any means. In fact the 992 GT3 feels way more electronically assisted aside from the steering (which is arguably more important, all hail the GT3 steering). But the 4RS is easy, absolutely 😅. It’s made for squeezing out lap times. We’ll let you know if that ever gets boring lol. But the manual 992 has so much more to it and I agree, it’s the car to have for the money and the experience, hands down. You have the right tool!

      @@aramistaboada5696 I am in Oz, you won't be able to get a 4RS for less than $100 over MSRP. Both cars are limited in Oz, I was very greatful to receive an allocation to a 992GT3 (34yrs of 911 ownership). Haven't driven a 4RS and not really chasing one anymore. After many chats with people etc, it is all about the sound and that bit more on the track. ON the road the 3 is awesome too.
      The 3 will always be the king of Porsche (except GT2s, CGT etc), I have still not found the limits of the new 3, it is so much better than the last few that I have owned. If you can afford it, get one, and it will hold it's value too.

    I guess if the GT3 was pdk it might have made a difference too. Honestly I have a 991.1 GT3 (see my vids) which I've owned for 5 years in September. It's utterly astounding! But a GT4RS pending (available in June). I need to get rid of the GT3 to get the RS (wife , money, room) which is making me the most conflicted person ever. IMO the GT3 in 997, 991 & 992 iteration looks better but that sound of the RS is preposterous! Anyway back to be being conflicted. 🙄

      That’s a really tough choice! It’s probably a completely different driving experience all around but since the 991.1 suspension is similar strut style as the 4RS and aero isn’t as crazy as the 992 you’re probably going to get a performance upgrade going to the 4RS all around and get to enjoy the crazy soundtrack. Let us know what you end up doing!
