Jordy Buck here. I make a bit, enough for my potting soil, manure pile, and some to sell. But, I'm still only working produce on half an acre. I'm using mostly wild coppice wood, but we're planting some hybrid willowand hybrid poplar on thd edgs of the property for future use.

Good Mark! Three cheers for Bio Char!!! Really dig your spreader there as well. Have a place that makes spindles and they give me all the cut offs(2 to 4 trash barrels per week) maple and ash. All kiln dried, great charcoal.. All my baby chicks get charcoal in all their feed. No more poopy butt

Organic family farmers also offer it to their pigs if they seem off. Sometimes depending on the reason for illness, it can help them feel better. Just seen a few videos on it. Look it up. Farm looks good.

You got me revved on Bio-char 2+ years ago.
I put fresh rabbit manure in a bucket of rainwater with an aquarium air stone. Then soak the biochar in that "tea" for 3 days to impregnate the pores with living goodies.
Using bones was another great tip from you. Thanx ! -KJ

For anyone interested in the soil science of bio-char, what it does is increase the "cation exchange capacity" aka "CEC" of the soil. Adding compost does the same thing (compost has very little mineral nutrient value). CEC is the soils ability to trap nutrients in water soluble form and hang onto them. It increases the rapid molecular exchange of water soluble minerals and nutrients.
What makes bio-char so special is that unlike compost or wood, bio char doesn't decompose very fast. Other organic matter like compost or leaf duff or buried wood (ie Hugelkultur) will increase CEC but decomposing insects and saprophytic microbes will break down the organic matter rather quickly, killing your soil's CEC. Bio-char on the other hand cannot be easily decomposed and will remain in the soil for a LONG time. The smaller the bio-char is crushed, the better the improvement with CEC but the shorter it's lifespan. I recommend breaking up bio-char or other natural charcoal and screening it until all material is

Thanks for the additional info. It's tough to get all the info in a reasonable size video. Thanks for adding to it!

@@bakersgreenacres No problem. Ive been involved in agriculture in one way or another for over 20 years on and off and I only learned some of the hard academic science of soils in the last 5-10. Wish I knew then what I know now haha

I have only recently begun to work with bio-char, and the results were immediate and positive. But I still need a better way of making it. I just came across a discarded water heater and hopefully I can turn it into a proper oven. Thanks for the info.

You don't have to make it in a barrel. You can light your brush pile top down and then wet it down when it becomes fully engulfed. Youll get a bunch. Not as much as a air tight burn barrel but easy with no equipment.
