Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole! They are one of the best A Capella groups out there and they never record anything that they can't reproduce live. They won three grammys, one of which is for this song! They are all crazy talented, so just pick any cover (they also have very good originals) and enjoy. The newer videos have one group member change though, Avi (the base) left on good terms for personal reasons (he does his own music now which is also good) and was replaced by Matt :) (Just saying so you won't be confused later on)

Kirstin and Mitch actually did sing the words "Around The World" in the background at a couple points in the song. They just didn't do a whole verse from that one.
"His voice is so high!" When it comes to Mitch Grassi, you actually haven't heard anything yet 😆
Your favorite, Scott Hoying, actually sings the most leads... but when it comes to songs where they all have solos he usually starts the song.
The others are Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola (beatboxer, tenor) and Avi Kaplan (bass 2011-2017). Matt Sallee, not in this video, is the current bass (2017+). All the other members are OG, though their looks change quite a bit when it comes to Mitch and Kirstin.

welcome to the wonderful world of pentatonix. A brief history. They won the sing off competition in 2011. their members are scott (blond guy), mitch (black hair), kirsty (female), avi (bearded guy), and kevin (beat boxer). In 2017 avi left the group for personal reasons in good terms and they added matt. Pentatonix is 100% acapella although they've made a few videos with instruments which u will see in their performances. They've won 3 grammys for their performances of daft punk,(which you just reacted to), dance of the sugar plum fairies, and jolene w/ dolly parton. They have so many videos..too many to list but i will list a few. In addition to the 3 i already mentioned...mad world, royals, the prayer, radioactive, 90's dance medley, sounds of silence, problem, perfume medley, butter x dynamite, a little space featuring ateez, bohemian rhapsody (THE FINEST COVER OF THAT CLASSIC ROCK SONG), wizard of ahhs (a montage of 17 pop songs arranged to tell the classic story of the wizard of oz), 12 days of christmas, little drummer boy, carol of the bells, you're a mean one mr. grinch, can you feel the love tonite, shallow and so many more. some originals include sing, love again, happy now, love me when i dont, coffee in bed, the lucky ones, be my eyes, never gonna cry again. During the height of the pandemic they released an entire album called "at home" which was recorded entirely in their own homes seperately on zoom and then mixed in the studio. songs include home, blinding lights, dreams, when the party's over, and break my heart. And with their wildly different voices and musical abilities, most every song has a surprise or two for you. Suggestions for a newbie... Hallelujah, of course, and probably their originals Love Again and Sing, if you want to stay upbeat. Covers of classics would be Bohemian Rhapsody (only if you're familiar with Freddie Mercury and Queen from the 70's) and Sound of Silence (updated 70's song by Simon & Garfunkel). I'm totally excited about following you as you discover the musical phenomenon that is Pentatonix. There's so much more.....

Scott (tall dude) is the baritone of the group. Mitch (high pitched voice) is a tenor of the group. Kirstin (the only woman) is the mezzo soprano. Kirstin and Mitch knew each other before high school. In highschool the three of them became friends and sang in choir together, they called themselves "The trio". During college they decided to audition for an a cappella TV competition show called "The Sing off". For the show groups had to have a minimum of 5 members. They found Avi (the original bass of the group) through a mutual friend. They found Kevin (the black man who is the group's beatboxer, a tenor and cellist) from his CZcams channel. The first time that the 5 members of Pentatonix ever sang together was either the night before or the day that they auditioned to be on "The Sing off". Pentatonix won season 3 of the show in 2011.
In 2017 Avi amicably left the group because he was finding the travel schedule stressful and his mom was diagnosed with cancer. Avi helped the group find his replacement Matt.

Also, did anyone else find it a little but disconcerting to watch with the video flipped? I know it doesn't make a difference, but being in different places and Kirstie's half-smile being on the other side through me a bit. I wonder if that would make it easier to avoid copyright blocks.

As many have pointed out already, Pentatonix (PTX) are grand masters of their craft. One of the _countless_ reasons why they continually succeed is that they know which singer to use for each role. It not only varies by song, but it can vary by section. Here are a few examples:
"Sing" - Scott takes the lead with his rocky, raspy voice and it's absolutely perfect.
"Aha" - Mitch takes the lead and I can't imagine anyone else doing that for this song.
"Standing By" - Avi takes the lead and Scott takes over the bassline.
"My Favorite Things" - Kirstie takes the lead and nobody else could do that in this song.
"You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" - Matt takes the lead and Scott takes over the bassline.
"Dreams" - Kevin sings instead of beatboxing because beatboxing would take away from the beauty of this song.
You may have noticed that I mentioned six members of the group when there are only five. Avi left the group on good terms in 2017 and was replaced by Matt.
In any case, each and every one of them has a massive amount of talent, not only in their singing, but in their arranging and musical knowledge. They make consistent, deliberate choices on how to arrange a song and they don't release it unless it passes the muster against all five of them (six, if you include Ben Bram, their manager, who can also sing but doesn't..he's strictly behind the scenes). Since each of them come from different backgrounds and have different tastes in what they consider to be perfect, requiring a song to be approved by each of them usually guarantees it's going to be absolutely amazing.
And that's why we love PTX.

The "high pitched" guy is Mitch, who is a counter-tenor. That is the highest recognized natural male singing voice. He has an insane range. But the white-haired guy is Scott, who has his own insane voice range. He is nominally a baritone but he can go low or high. The guy with the deep voice is Avi, who has been known to blow out speakers at some live concerts. If you listened to the video carefully, Kirstie (the blue-haired lady) was doing "Around the World" in the background in one of their mixes near the end.

Whenever either Avi or Matt has the lead Scott takes over the bass part. It's easiest to see on The Sound of Silence, in my opinion, though once you get to know their voices as individuals it can be easy to hear.

  • @alan-freeman
    @alan-freeman Před 2 lety +9

This is ALL voices. IF on the odd occasion there is an instrument used - you will see it on the official video. Kevin plays Cello, Scott plays piano, they have colab'd with Lindsey Stirling (Violin) on a couple.
To prove how good they are (and don't cheat) there are live versions of this on youtube. There is even a private performance where they do this just stood in front of the room with no mics. OK, so the balance of beat/bass compared to the lead is off, but you can tell how good they are.

Around the World (at least those words and their melody) was actually being sung by Kirstin (the girl) in the background during the part where Avi (their bass singer, the guy with the really deep voice) was doing his solo on Television Rules the World. She did it again during the big mashup towards the end of the video where everybody was singing something different.
As others have said, they don't really have a "lead singer", they always decide together how songs are going to be done and who's going to be doing what part, depending on the needs of the song. While Mitch (the black-haired guy with the high voice) probably attracts the most attention (he didn't really stretch himself in this one - try Love Again or The Prayer to hear him shine), all of them are marvelous singers and each could probably headline a group on their own.

Scott Hoying (blond, white hair in the video) is nominally a baritone, but he has a fantastic range. Don't worry - he gets plenty of solos! He often ends up singing the tenor part because Mitch Grassi, the official tenor (whose voice you noted - just wait, you ain't heard nothing yet with Mitch and high notes), is usually switching off singing alto or soprano with Kirstin Maldonado, the only woman in the group. As you heard, Avi Kaplan, the bass, can also sing beautifully as well as produce "vocal bass." Avi left for personal reasons in 2017 and was succeeded by Matt Sallee, who has his own strengths as a bass (massive energy and very nimble vocally). Even beatboxer Kevin Olusola sings, a pleasant tenor and an excellent falsetto, but no one else in the group can beatbox like he does, so you don't get to hear him that often. For an upbeat song that will show you Matt (and an example of Mitch's scary high notes), try Come Along.

Here is the story behind this video. A backstory, they won a tv singing competition, grand prize was a bunch of money and a 2 year recording contract. A year later the record company was bought out, the new company did not think they could make money on an a cappella group. So PTX was dropped. They had studio time scheduled to do this video, but of course it was cancelled. So these determined people, scrapped together every last penny they had, they bought outfits, and rented some equipment, went to the apartment of one of the guys, and filmed/recorded this in a closet, and edited at the kitchen table. They won the grammy for it, (The Grammy association had to rename the award to add a cappela, during their acceptance speech they announced they had spent a grand total of $400 to record the video. Look at the views on it. Also check out the views on their version of Hallelujah. Speaking of Halleujah, Leonard Cohen heard it before he died, and said he liked it better than any other version, including his own. When they did Bohemian Rhapsody Brian May saw the video, and immediately posted it on ALL of his social media, with just one word, "Enjoy".

To see a completely different aspect to their versatility, try Hallelujah or Imagine next. Bohemian Rhapsody is also a good choice, or Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies. Warning: Mitch (high pitch guy) and Kirsty change their looks a lot. But it’s always them, even if they look like completely different people. Avi, their original base (goatee and no shirt guy in this video) left amicably and has been replaced by a new bass singer, Matt. To hear Matt with the group, I recommend The Sound Of Silence, You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch, or Come Along. For an original Pentatonix song, try Sing.

As you progress down the PTX rabbit hole, your favorite singer will change, I promise you lol!
Each song that they do celebrates the member's different talents. If you want some crazy low baritone notes along with Kevin Olusola's (beat boxer, but also a great singer and classically trained cellist) beats, I personally think the best is Oh Come all Ye Faithful. I know it's not Christmas time, but it is amazing! Bohemian Rhapsody, Run to You (original, not Whitney Houston's song) are great starters. As far as the guy with the high voice, Mitch Grassi, you ain't seen nothing yet! Just wait until you receive the first "Mitch-Slap". 😀😉

Just found your video! This Medley of PTX's is one of my faves.
The two songs I believe you didn't recognize also come from the same album as One More Time, called Discovery. Daft Punk actually collabed with a Japanese animation studio (the one that did Galaxy Express 999) to make a film of the Discovery album! I love it, and would def recommend if you are a Daft Punk fan! The film's called Intersteller 5555!

Scott the guy you spoke of I think is the most versatile with the widest ranges. I don’t know for sure but the guy with the dark hair and high voice they are saying when he hits you with his high voice that you just got “Mitch Slapped””.I’ve only heard about 3 songs. But up to this video with these 5 singers that they were together maybe as far back as junior high. Then, they entered an acapella singing contest on tv and won. You’re picking out one guy as the best but I gaurentee they don’t see it that way or they wouldn’t have lasted all these years.about two guys have changed. If you’ll notice the girl and her blue makeup and pale skin she looks white Anglo, but she’s not. She has black hair eyebrows and eyes that are shadowed as if she were Hispanic or Italian. This whole thing is a masterwork. They are masters themselves and the guy they paid $400 to edit this thing made ina kitchen closet is a master too.

Yeah, all five members of PTX are extremely talented singers, _and_ they are very good at creating interesting arrangements. They're one of three currently-active a capella groups like this (5 members including a basso profondo and a beat boxer, all extremely talented, and with good clever interesting arrangements). Of the three, PTX is best known and leans toward a pop/EDM sound. Home Free mostly sings Country music, which I guess is a nice niche for them, because nobody else (of note) is really doing Country a capella. VoicePlay leans heavily into theatricality, so they do a lot of movie and Broadway songs, a lot of Disney songs and medleys, a lot of character voice acting, always have amazing costuming and make-up, etc. Personally I think VoicePlay is the best of the three, but PTX is very good as well, especially if you like the EDM/dance genre, which is their go-to style.
There's also Voctave, but they're more like a traditional (albeit very good) choir, with first and second (and occasionally third) each of soprano, alto, tenor, bass. Their individual singers don't need as much range because they have more singers (usually at least eight) and don't do as much part shuffling between the members. In the other three groups, for example, the baritone can cover the bass line while the bass sings a solo up in the tenor range; or the mezzo/tenor can hit the high backup notes if the countertenor has a solo, etc. Voctave doesn't do nearly as much of that sort of thing. And they don't usually do much vocal percussion, either. And their videos are usually just the singers standing behind music stands with microphones singing. So really they're more of a choir, not really in the same category as the other three groups.
Other acapella groups to look for include Backtrack Vocals, Acapop Kids, Nick McKaig, and sometimes Peter Hollens. Oh, and some of the members of the above groups have VERY good stuff on their solo channels, as well. Of particular note in this regard are Geoff Castellucci (VoicePlay's basso profondo; he does 5-part harmony with himself) and Kevin Olusola (PTX's beat boxer; he also plays cello, sings, and uses a loop device very effectively).
And yes, we all want to see a collab by the four bass singers (Tim, Geoff, Avi, Matt) and/or the three beat boxers (Kevin, Layne, Adam).

Genuine lol at your confident assertion that Scott is the best singer...you have such a journey ahead of you. Scott is a sometimes-underrated, incredible talent, it's true, but the thing you learn when you hear a bit more of their music is that you really can't objectively say anyone is the best because they're all just ridiculous. (That being said, when THEY are asked who's the best singer, they all say Mitch - that's the guy with the high voice, and you'll see why they feel that way over time)

If you don't know him, he is a musical comedian and he will blow you away. If you start with his newer work, be prepared to get in your FEELS. But I suggest you watch his content in order. He has 4 specials specifically on Netflix and lots of clips from them (and other specials/songs) on CZcams. In order is "What," "Make Happy," "Inside," and "The Inside Outtakes" 😊
