    The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC.

    Mitch didn't cheat. He used the megaphone as a prop only. It's all his voice. In their live versions there is no megaphone and they get the same sound. I understand he just happened to see it on set and decided to use it. Great reaction.

    You'll pick all of them, eventually, lol. Mitch has my heart because the tone of his voice just sort of vibrates my cells or something, but they all deserve to be somebody's favorite, and they aren't Pentatonix without all five. I say that, and yet Avi leaves to be replaced by Matt. It's different, but it's wonderful. He's carved out his own place within the group. It still needs all 5, though, to be PTX. That being said they all have solo work that you'll love, and Mitch and Scott do Sup3rfruit, too, which is just the two of them and is so, so, so good! Keep going!

      @bill.godwin-austen Před 2 lety +1

      Exactly! My "favorite" varies depending on which song... wait until he hears some of the songs that feature Kirstin! He'll have a new favorite. And KO kills it every time, so he's right up there too. The fact is, they're an amazing ensemble of five people, each of whom has the talent to be the lead/front for their own group, but they set aside their egos and go with the person whose voice best suits the song to pick the lead, and take on the background harmonies when they're not on lead with the same gusto as when they are.

    Pentatonix is a very enjoyable rabbit hole to fall down!
    Mitch's use of the megaphone to imitate the guitar is just a prop for the video, people who've seen him perform the song in concert say he doesn't use it and sounds just the same.
    The Special Thanks people listed at the end of the video are their Patreon sponsors.
    Kirstin and Avi have the names most often mispronounced. Avi is pronounced AH-vee. Easy way to remember Kirstin's name, Kirstin/Kirstie rhymes with Thurston/thirsty.

    You might want to try out a "different" Pentatonix. Try "The Prayer", "Amazing Grace", or "Imagine". "Imagine" is one of my PTX favorites and the lyrics are so pertinent today (I think even more pertinent than when John Lennon wrote the song back in the 1970's). It has a really beautiful message.

      The sad thing is that they are NOT "more pertinent" - the sad thing is that we're still stuck in this endless loop of hatred, bigotry and stupidity. Not long back I watched the song "America" from the 1961 movie West Side Story, and was appalled at how there's been literally ZERO change in the prejudices mentioned in 60 years.

Together they are the Rythm section. Looking forward to many more PTX reactions. You can't go wrong with any of their performances. They are all musical geniuses.

  • @perfectkismet
    @perfectkismet Před 2 lety +26

    While the bass might be an "underdog" role there is no world in which Avi (Ah-vee) is underappreciated. If you want the underdog you should have stuck with Scott. But even that's just in terms self-declared fan favorites as Scott has, by far, the most solos and has his hands in everything. Maybe go with Matt who, even five years later, still has way too much "new guy" energy thrown his way by salty Avi fans.

    • @kayecastleman6353
      @kayecastleman6353 Před 2 lety +4

      Agree totally with all your observations. Our Avi was probably the original most favourite, since he arrived in the group with dedicated groupies. Remember all those "We Love Avi" signs at the Sing-Off? I tend to think of Scott as the core of Pentatonix. All the other members surround his solid foundation with their unique qualities, and without him we would never know the magic of PTX. Dear Matt has had big boots to fill. I find the group is more cohesive with Matt as bass, which probably bodes well for their longevity. Lucky us!

    • @tylersmith3533
      @tylersmith3533 Před 2 lety

      I think in terms of appreciation and favourites, most PTX fans go the same route in terms of finding one, then another, then another and as they get new favourites, the others kinda fall off a bit.
      On first listen to them, Scott is often identified as a quick favourite, but it's by design; Scott is by far the most pop sounding one of them all, and he can sing outside of the pop sounding voice (The Prayer is good evidence of that), but he uses it because it draws people in. After a couple songs, though, people pick up on Mitch and his vocal acrobatics, which often leads to him being the favourite. I think that the more people listen, the more appreciation they gain for the bass, whether it's Avi or Matt, and certainly for Kevin as they start to really listen to how well he carries the tracks.
      The one common thing I see, though, is Kirstie being kind of forgotten about in a lot of this stuff, and it's not a strange thing to happen when you look at the reasons. Whilst she shines on the tracks she takes the lead on (Say Something, Seasons of Love), she's far too often compared to Mitch who, whilst singing in a very similar range, has a voice type that projects more and so sounds higher. People think Mitch is literally just a "better" female voice than Kirstie is, and on the face of it, I see the logic.
      It takes someone who's really listened to PTX for a long time, throughout their growth, to see just how much Kirstie adds to the group. Her harmonising is second to none. Without her voice, many of the tracks that PTX do would sound much, much flatter. She can harmonise with Scott and Mitch almost effortlessly, and her ability allows the other members of the group to have their moment, and to shine brightly. She's actually my favourite of the group simply because of this (and the parts she plays in other songs, like the 90s Dance Medley - full Everytime We Touch cover when?!)
      It's also easy to have Scott kinda fall by the wayside a little bit on the journey, outside of things like The Prayer where he does something very different. His voice is kind of in the middle, and whilst his riffs are identifiable, it's easy to downplay his importance as just "anyone could do that" because he sings mostly in the baritone registers. The truth of it, though, is that Scott isn't just an incredibly gifted singer in that range. He takes over the bass lines, which is incredible, and has a high top end which allows him to get up to Mitch's mid-range, which is super difficult. But that's not the special bit about Scott. The way he drives songs is probably the most underrated part of what he brings. You only need listen to Love Me When I Don't. The first verse starts with Mitch and then is bridged to the chorus by Matt. No hate on Matt because he sings it incredibly well, but it doesn't build or drive to the chorus like it would if Scott did it. Super underrated ability right there.

    Generally if there’s a drum sound it’s Kevin. Avi does a bit of beatboxing but mostly he covers the bass. He often mimes playing a bass guitar when he’s doing that. But you’re right. They’re a team. But you also need to check out a track where Kirsten takes the lead (“Say Something” would be good) or when Scott leads (“Radioactive” is my favourite here). Their cover of “Imagine” showcases all of their vocal talents - including Kevin’s. There’s a lot of newer stuff with Matt on bass but I would recommend you work through their earlier stuff first before jumping to that.

    Mitch is the best choice for main vocals here because his range overlaps Freddy Mercury pretty well. If you want to see the individual voices shine, do "Hallelujah" and you will get samples of each voice. Not to mention an ending that is their trademark "wall of sound" that makes a lot of folks pause.
    You asked about drum sounds. It is almost always Kevin who does their beat-boxing. Before 2017, Avi did the bass, but he had to leave for family reasons. In later videos, Matt Sallee is their bass and he is good too.
    Mitch uses the megaphone as a prop. You should check out their old videos from "The Sing-Off" when they did "Let's Get It On." Mitch did a wah-wah guitar there without the megaphone.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 Před rokem

    Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee) is the bass. The beatboxer is Kevin Olusolas; he also has a lovely voice. Since Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, their new bass is Matt Sallee. Try their cover of _You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch_ to hear a good long solo by Matt. Also, Avi has gone on to have a very successful solo career; you should check out his CZcams channel.
    Pentatonix really is a team - they aren't competing with each other. You don't have to pick a favorite.
    And no, Mitch did *not* cheat, as others have already told you.
    I've seen a recording of a live performance of this, where we could actually see who was doing the second guitar solo. It was Mitch again.
    Regarding your surprise that Mitch was singing in a lower range, Mitch's full range is six octaves plus one note (not counting whistle tones), which makes him incredibly versatile. We generally hear him doing the really high notes, because *he* can while others can't, but he has no trouble with lower notes (though I wouldn't put him up against Avi in a bass competition).

    PTX just has no weakest link..
    the solo artist would not be able to shine without the support of the other 4
    and without Kevin it would fall apart he is so multi talented and often forgotten because he doesn't "sing" with lyrics but in every song he has the hardest job!

    omg you can totally have a favorite. I love them all, like more than anything, but Scott is definitely my favorite. If you like Scott please check out "I should tell your mama on ya" its just scott by himself but its soooo good. That being said, they are epic when they all sing together. Scott and Mitch started another group called superfruit and literally everything they do is fantastic

    That's not cheating. Using effects on vocals doesn't negate the a capella.

    Avi, pronounced AH-vee, is a singer too, he just sings the bass line. Kevin the beat boxer sings occasionally, you’ll usually find him filling in some vocals when there isn’t percussion present.
    They definitely work as a team. They all sing backup vocals when another is doing a lead vocal. I’m unaware of any conflicts regarding part selections. They all support the good for the piece in question and the group overall.

Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch grew up together since ages 8 and 10.. all 5 are like a family and love each other. This is the most unique group on the planet!!
    Kirstie.. rhymes with "thirsty"
    Avi.. you were saying it right.."AHH vee"

    I love that you love Scott, Avi and Scott are my favorites as well. I think you’d enjoy their “Evolution of” videos, they share the lead so you’ll see a lot of Scott, and they’re all live. “Evolution of Beyoncé” and “Evolution of Michael Jackson” are my favorites, I highly recommend!

    PTX always goes with whichever singer would do the best for the lead part. So here we have Mitch on the melodic Freddie Mercury lead, with Scott coming in for the angry rock part, and the others have little bits throughout. In contrast, on the sad, heartfelt Say Something, we have Kirstin on the lead with Avi having a featured verse. If you want to hear *everyone* get a lead (including Kevin), do their version of John Lennon's Imagine, or later on, when Avi has left and Matt is taking the bass, Amazing Grace.

    I love all of them, but Avi is by and far my favourite. That doesn't surprise me though, because I'm a firm believer that the bassline properly makes or breaks a song and it's just always been my favourite component of music, though it doesn't get near enough credit.
    And on that note, Matt is also very good as a bass singer.

    As has been suggested, you need to check out Avi's solo music. He left PTX in September 2017, and now has a flourishing solo career, doing almost all originals. Most reactors start with his most successful song so far, "Change on the Rise", but since he uses his full vocal range in his own music, here's a good one to show off his lower register - a live version of his original, "Chains". czcams.com/video/_Ki0WeSRxvE/video.html

    They all have solo projects out their you can check out. As for Avi he does a couple of covers House of the Rising Sun, Lean on Me and a bluegrass style cover of OutKast's Hey Ya. Everything else is original his most watched is Change on the Rise, and his latest releases off his soon to be released album First Place I Go, All is Well, I Can't Lie and On My Way. All of his music is amazing and is relatable to all. If you would like to experience his beautiful lower register Black is the Color of My True Loves Hair with Peter Hollens. Subscribing on hopes to see Avi reactions and more Avi era PTX reactions, And the beatboxers name is Kevin Olusola.

    I love all 6 of them including Matt, but my heart belongs to Avi. You have to check out some of his solo work. It's very different, but no less incredible. Most people start with his original song "Change on the Rise" which is amazing - but if you want something familiar (and fun) check out his interpretation of "Hey Ya" by Outkast, done under the name Avriel and the Sequoias.
