      Let them have a cool adventure like we did. Blind and without people saying sub/dub and telling us to skip episodes and things. Also no hinting or hyping.

    Garp is the "Hero of the Marines", a true veteran of the seas, including the Grand Line, so he has a real undertanding of how dangerous it is out there. Luffy does not, that's why Garp is so worried about Luffy just dying because of the unpredictable nature of the grand line or getting killed by other pirates/bounty hunters/marines.

    Nah, live action Garp is right, Luffy really doesn't have a clue how dangerous the Grandline is. But it's about having the will to proceed regardless, which is what LA Garp was testing.
    The Garp in the anime/manga is very different, the LA made him a tertiary antagonist to better fit the format of a modern TV series.
    We also don't find out Garp's relationship to Luffy until episode 312, it's a HUGE reveal in the anime.

      The thing is that Garp has his motivations beyond Luffy for meeting up with Luffy. He intentionally set it up to see if his new cadets would follow orders or stand up to him. That fight scene was almost as much for Koby as it was Luffy. Of course Garp is major concerned about Luffy as he says, but the reason he ramps it up in ep 6 and gets to the finale scene is to test Koby out.

    • @nameless4222
      @nameless4222 Před měsícem +2

      Imo he worked because he was introduced as a hardass Vice Admiral who's ready to punish fellow Marines like Morgan to uphold justice. He seemed like the proper type of Marine until his facade started cracking bit by bit the longer the show went on.
      If the LA makes it much more later and shows more Garp, I hope he's already abandoned that pretense and acts more Luffy-like. Loud, dumb, but full of heart with an empty stomach.

    • @Kanriel
      @Kanriel Před měsícem

      @@nameless4222 I am fully confident they will. Garp kept up a lot of that facade to test out Koby. He didn't want to show his hand right off, he wanted to see if Koby is a "worthy successor" since Garp in his old age doesn't have one. And if you read the manga, you'll know there's a few more than Luffy that skipped out on possibly filling his shoes. Now that Garp knows the kind of man Koby is, he can be more himself. He approved Koby and Helmeppo for his specialized training only after they passed his earlier tests, after all. And technically this is an entire arc in the manga we never got to see, so we actually have no idea about how close this is to the live action or not.

In the anime, when he faked his death with the ketchup, he was actually planning on sneaking away and was going to make up a story about how he did his best but just barely lost, but then he thought about how hard everyone else was fighting and decided to finish the fight for real. Also, there was a funny moment at the end where the exploding star didn’t completely knock Chew out, so he started beating him with a hammer until he went unconscious

The live action Usopp felt like a fully realized character to me while watching the live action. Just not as explored as the others. Figured they were saving it for next season. They could do this by giving Usopp some of his key moments in Little Garden and Alabasta.

    To explain Chew's fighting style a little, in the manga he's described as being an Archerfish fishman. Archerfish are a real kind of fish that hunt bugs that come near the water by spitting jets of water out of their mouths at them, so Chew is kind of an exaggeration of them

    In this series the whole Garp storyline is exactly what he tells Koby and Haircut at the end, his training methods are considered the worst kind of punishment. Garp knows the dangers and hardships his grandson is going to face in pursuit of his dream, and he’s making sure Luffy is ready. That being said he’s also a Grand-Admiral of the Marines so he can’t be seen taking it easy on a pirate. One of my favourite subtle through lines in the season is how Garp’s demeanour changes anytime someone claims the the Straw Hat pirate is ruthless, or bloodthirsty, he instantly knows that person can’t be trusted, and is on the wrong side of things. Things don’t tend to end well for Marines that tell Garp that Straw Hat Luffy is evil. It’s also how he knows right away that he can trust Koby, and why he takes him under his wing, he’s got the Luffy seal of approval.

    29:50
    I've been a fan of One Piece since literally 1999, following each chapter and update and each episode week to week almost religiously since. I will be the first to say if you want complaints or concerns about the Live-Action I can write a whole dissertation on it. I'm far from saying I have no complaints about the Live-Action.
    But every episode has really blown me away at how much thought and effort was put into capturing the essence of what One Piece is. And the cast-off ceremony solidified it for me that this show really does, despite its problems and changes that they made, really beats with the heart of what makes One Piece special. Special Shoutout at 29:50 when they transitioned the original theme ("We Are") of the anime into the main theme of the live action. The person that made that decision deserves every raise in my book.

When he tells Nami she’s one of them and calls her friend and that they’re her crew, that speaks volumes of how much Nami needed that, she finally has the support and belonging that she has dreamed of for sooo long.
    The cast off with the barrel where they each say their life goal and then flashes back to when they’re kids that juxtaposition and that imagery is 🤌💋 I tear up every time I see that. And Kobi giving Luffy his first wanted poster, and their goodbye ‘be a good pirate’….’be a good marine’ 🥹

    One thing I love about the post-fight conversation between Gary and Luffy, someone else pointed out to me. When Garp says “youre on your own” it means something more. When Garp “took on the task” of tracking down the straw hat pirates, that meant that unless he called for backup, no other marines would really bother. So Garp was intentionally, maybe only partially, just so no other marines would and possible kill him. So now that Garp is “letting him go” it’s open season on the straw hats.

    I've rewatched the live action series vicariously several times now, and I think I finally understand Garp's sudden change at the end.
    Before when Koby "convinced" Garp that Luffy is always going to be a pirate, I think it was right there when Garp decided that he's not going to stop Luffy from being a pirate. However, he still wanted to test him so they kept pursuing him. Unbeknowgst to the rest of his troops, he had already planned to let Luffy go.

    • @Kanriel
      @Kanriel Před měsícem +1

      Partially, BUT THERE'S MORE! Going after Luffy despite learning his lesson was a TEST FOR KOBY! He wanted to see if Koby was going to be the Marine that will still follow his own sense of justice and not someone elses and still be a good person. Koby's act of defiance cements Koby as the heir Garp has been missing out on and it elevates Koby up in his eyes. I argue meeting up with Luffy was almost as much to test Koby as it was to give Luffy a final warning and goodbye.

There are more things cut which are amazing, I understand they are hard to fit but still worth experiencing somehow. Thanks for making it through the series!
    I don't blame you for thinking that the confrontation between Garp and Luffy feels rushed and out of place. In the manga and anime, they didn't face off directly until much, much later, so even for us long-time fans, the battle between them can feel a little shoehorned in. However, Garp's final reaction to Luffy's determination fits quite well with what anime fans know of him. His feelings towards his grandson are very conflicted, and waver a great deal between pride and frustration.
    Garp's strength, and the vast differential between him and Luffy, shouldn't have been a surprise at all, though. Remember, he's a Vice-Admiral -- no one advances that far in the navy without having some fighting chops. The ridiculously one-sided nature of that fight is one more hint of just how tough it's going to be for the Straw Hats on the Grand Line, and how much stronger they'll need to be.
    And to Angela's editor: Many thanks for all your hard work! Looking forward to seeing more of it in the future.

I'm doing bursts of episodes (usually an arc, but for the really long arcs I might take a pause at the halfway point) and then take a couple weeks off to let it sink in. FMA Brotherhood (which you are currently watching) is my favorite anime of all time, but One Piece is closing in and might surpass it in the over 500 episodes I've yet to watch. One Piece presents a lot of its powerscaling via the Bounty system and the Marine's ranks, although even that is sometimes subverted or put in the service of plot to great effect.
    So yeah, there would be no way a rookie pirate (even one as strong as Luffy) could go against a vice-admiral of the Marine. Above him are basically only 2 more ranks: Admiral (only 3 members have this rank at a time) and the Fleet Admiral (top dog and boss of all of the Marine).

    A couple of changes were made to Nami's story, probably for time, that I think make it slightly better in the manga/anime. For one, her village knew what she'd been doing all along but never let on to her that they knew (so they still treated her as if they thought she was a traitor) That was because they wanted her to be able to quit working for Arlong if it became too difficult for her, without her having to stress about letting the villagers down. Because of this, in the manga/anime when her money first gets stolen, she plans on just spending another 8-10 years on collecting another 100 million berry. It's the villagers that actually draw a line in the sand & go after Arlong because they refused to let her suffer anymore for their sake. I do actually like that storyline better than the villagers never knowing what she was doing.
