Mario del Monaco was an astounding dramatic tenor, but he also was a wonderful singing actor. The amount of emotion he brings to each scene is just breathtaking. You won't find this much emotion today in any singer.
Opera is to me the highest level of singing. To develop a voice huge enough to fill a whole theatre and send shivers down the audience's spines, have them tearing up just because of your voice power. And Mario del Monaco is a perfect example! Look at him! Listen to him! I would have burst into tears!
Oh, and he has the best laughter ever in this aria!

Agreed. Don’t forget that in opera plays, you also have to act. Opera plays like this are beyond musicals, they’re in their own league. And yes, Del Monaco’s acting was on point here!

His acting and singing in this hall is ASTOUNDING. This hall sounds like a vacuum void where no sound may ever echo, so the fact that he’s able to reach the back row and evoke such a visceral reaction from the audience is the true definition of the word amazing.

It's simply Astonishing that a human being can emit such a voluminous sound of sheer beauty, power and Majesty yet, Del Monaco does this with stunning effect.
GOD JEHOVAH Made a wonderful creation in that voice and Del Monaco to his everlasting credit never abused that gift but rather honed it into pristine perfection. Simply STUPENDOUS ✨

Pavarotti is technically the best tenor for me, but obviously technical skills aren’t everything. When it comes to opera plays like this, acting and emotion matters, too. Del Monaco’s acting was destined for Pagliacci. Pavarotti’s version was great and clean, but this one has more soul.
Even Still, In 2018, This performance sends shivers down my spine. Amazing work.

La piu' grande interpretazione in assoluto!!!! Altri tenori cantano questo brano anche molto bene ma lo studio maniacale del personaggio di Canio trova solo in Mario del Monaco la sua trasposizione vocale e scenica. Emozione allo stato puro, ascoltando le sue intervista al giornalista Biagi e vedendolo sulla scena si puo' ragionevolmente credere che lui volesse morire in palcoscenico.Ha sacrificato tutta la sua vita in funzione della voce per poter dare al pubblico recite indimenticabili.

ho gia commentato questo video, tutte le volte che lo guardo mi viene un nodo alla gola, credo che nel panorama mondiale dell'opera di ieri e di oggi non c'è stato ,non, c'è e non ci sarà mai piu una performance di questo livello, non ho avuto la fortuna di vederlo dal vivo ma mio padre si, mi raccontava che tutte le testimonianze lasciate sui dischi non sono che una piccolissima parte di quello che era il Grande Del Monaco dal vivo, ringrazio yotube e specialmente tutti coloro che condividono con noi persone appassionate e sconosciute questi documenti artistici di un uomo ed un artista irripetibile......e grazie a mio padre, che me l'ha fatto conoscere!

This is the best “Vesti la giubba” I’ve ever heard in my life. Other than Mario del Monaco, I can’t find any better Canio, or tenor who could sing with such a strong voice like him.
T I I suggest you listen to Corelli’s version :) for me the two (along with Björling) represent the greatest tenors of all times and I absolutely loved both of them in Pagliacci :)

Para mi Mario del Monaco es quien se lleva en primer lugar en cuanto a interpretación. Ese tal Pavarotti tiene fama, estos eran leyendas de la opera.
Pavarotti también tiene sus obras, esta no es una de ellas, también pienso que MDM deja a muchos grandes mirando para arriba con esta interpretación, pero cada quién tiene lo suyo, Pavarotti es insuperable varias obras
Es cuestión de gustos. Pavarotti sabía frasear mucho mejor este aria. Y también matizaba. Del Monaco era muy ruidoso e histérico sl cantar. Su fraseo en este fragmento deja mucho que desear. Yo de esta época siempre prefiero a Bergonzi y Corelli. Me parecen mejores en todo. Incluso un tenor con agudos difíciles como Domingo era mucho más cálido y soberbio en la interpretación de este aria. Su voz era sensacional sí pero Del Monaco nunca conoció el pianísimo y eso fastidia escucharlo en forte todo el tiempo. Pavarotti y Domingo en sensibilidad, expresividad se llevan lejos a Del Monaco en este aria. Y no hay que demeritar a Pavarotti. Decía Karajan que sus cuerdas vocales eran tocadas por Dios. Y yo le creo. Fue el último de los grandes tenores italianos.
Y un cantante es más que voz y agudos. Tengo un Otello con Del Monaco y Tebaldi y en el lírico dúo de amor del acto 1 Del Monaco no canta nada amoroso. Se la pasa regañando a la pobre Tebaldi. En verdad su nivel para matizar era realmente pobre cosas que no tenian ni Bergonzi ni Corelli ni Pavarotti ni Domingo así no tivieran el portento de voz de Del Monaco. Repito, un cantante es más que voz y agudos histéricos
