I feel more at one with nature "when I'm on a carbon fibre bicycle with electronic shifting" Brilliant!
It helps to be one of those locals and be able to take advantage of those park closures in the spring. A lot nicer when you're sharing the full road with just other cyclists. Beartooth Highway or Going to the Sun road in Glacier. Try those if you make it back this way. And yes, we call them buffalo as well as bison.
Top banter between you and Emily in this one. Love the idea of her starting a channel just so she can beef with you.
November would be a comparatively slow time for Yellowstone too.
The conflict between preservation of National Parks and the overcrowding it brings is a weird irony that I think is lost on no one. It seems like a bus system at Yellowstone could help out with that a lot since most people are driving one of the loops and stopping in the same places. It helped a ton at Zion. But I assume Yellowstone has some unique problems. I think they used to have a bus system many decades ago.
They're definitely called Buffalo in Wyoming and Montana. They open the park for bikes only at the beginning and maybe the end of the season for a week-ish. That's a pretty amazing time to ride there.
Love the moment with nature and applause at the end! Thanks for sharing
Is the breathing part at the end still good for you if you do it when max out on the turbo?
I rode through Yellowstone and Glacier on a tour earlier this year. Neither is great for biking, but Yellowstone is actively hostile to bikers. The RVs, narrow roads, and insane traffic made it tough to enjoy the insane natural beauty. 100% agree: go see it but leave the bikes at home. Maybe some day they'll build a bike route through the parks.
What a dream that would be!
Funny you mentioned fly fishing. I was just watching a doc on Yellowstone and they were talking about the salmon larvae which live under water until they don't, and then they climb onto a log and transform into a salmon fly, and I mean by the tens of thousands. Then they showed a woman who had made some artificial salmon flies to fish with and she was killing it. Anyway, heading to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone in a few days and was trying to figure out the best places to ride. Thanks for the videos. Looks like we'll stay mostly in and around Grand Tetons on the bikes.
Nice 👍, thanks for the heads up. Beautiful place.
Looking forward to more clapping... KOM's, coffee stops, surviving LA traffic
Who knew he had a traveling studio audience. He's more popular than I ever imagined.
I was there in the early 80’s. Want to go back but do a backpacking trip to see the things those who stick to the roads miss.
Hope you get up around Mammoth Hotsprings, Boiling River, Cooke City. Some good spinning, soaking.. Bear country.
Highly recommend Lefty Kreh’s “Presenting the Fly”
This, and it was really discouraging to ride through Yellowstone on the Transamerica bicycle touring route. I never thought I would want to just be *done* with a National Park. But I was relieved to get out of the park… And truth be told, Wyoming in general. The route is either zero-services remote or on US-287/I-80 in that state.
National Parks are experiencing higher than normal crowds this year. Was in Zion and Bryce a few weeks ago…very very busy.
Strong "I'm in a cool place but I got on the wrong road" vibes.
Aw man...that was very cool. " Gadabout Gaimon" now huh ? The applause was sublime ...Peace
Love the end. Tanks
I just moved to Bozeman and went to Yellowstone this weekend! I sooo need to ride out there!!!
This time of year is perfect!
It's funny how you build up Ol' Faithful in your head, but then it happens and it's just like...yup, that's Ol' Faithful. It's almost more so about being able to say you saw it rather than the actual enjoyment of seeing it. The best part of Yellowstone for me was driving on the old 5 mile dirt/gravel road. It felt a lot less touristy and had some great wildlife along the way.
Another good park to ride Shenandoah park in Virginia.
Skyline drive is nice. I have to drive it , do not have the fitness to bike it.
Doing the leaf peeping this year saw a few bicycles out there.
I just rode from Luray to Big Meadows a few weeks ago. That is a beautiful ride. Road is narrow, twisty and obviously hilly. I was very impressed with the car/drivers. No issues at all and it was super foggy. Sometimes cars and bicycle can play nice.
Lassen National Park is outstanding for bikes, great switchbacks, incredible scenery, and virtually no cars if you go during the week. Glacier Point in Yosemite is amazing but there are a lot of cars, either go on bikes only weekend in the Spring or sunrise on a weekday but not in 2022, it's being entirely repaved.
Yosemite also has a bike/pedestrian only session on Tioga Rd just before it opens for the season, usually around Memorial Day.
Ahhh, the claps at the very end killed me. Thanks.
Me too! 😂
Haul, Double Haul and Roll Cast, You flyfish too!!! Take a fly rod with you on the gravel bike and let us watch you flyfish with your cookie jersey on, epic.
If you get off your bike and walk (aka hike), you can get away from all those cars. If you get more than a mile from the road you wont see any people either.
Loved the dig at Ryanair, our national pride/shame!
Stage-winner of a call-back at the end!🤣
That final clap kills me!
“Buffalos have a great whoop score” - love it
The fishing tips at 6min
My mind is thinking that could be a storytime thing. Strap a rod to your back, pedal out to a spot, throw a line around for a while, lots of scenery shots, maybe a catch or two, pedal home, and all the while recalling a moment in time that is poignant to you or a life lesson for everyone.
Wow. I am not the only person who can compare and love flyfishing and cycling. do you like beer as well?
More of a bourbon guy sorry
hahahah! The clap track was !!!
Applause doping is now a thing
Great video Phil! I disagree about bringing bike to Yellowstone...I was there in June and rode from Madison down to Old Faithful and back...great ride and beautiful views!
Just as an FYI Phil, both Teton and Yellowstone have cycling only times in spring and fall. I try to go as much as I can. Especially Yellowstone is awesome without cars.
Hey, it's the welcome center from Sweet Tooth...
Go in the spring when it's closed to cars. Hit Glacier at the same time while you're at it
They open the main roads through Yellowstone to cyclists a couple of weeks before they are open to cars if you don't want to share the roads with cars. Reportedly, there is even more wildlife when cars aren't going up and down the roads (surprise, surprise).
Throughout the entire description of casting you forgot to mention the part were the fly inevitably gets caught in the trees. Nice video.
I think Phil meant to cover that issue with the Roll Cast.
Little bit of everything in this video Phil, like it
Thank you! I thought deep breaths were pretty good too.
The last comment about the video is over, take a deep breath... and then clapping... killed it! Nailed the comedy especially that joke about the snooty carbon fiber roadie character earlier on...
Word Was, go in the winter & XC ski, but I think these days snowmobilers have messed that up too
Hi Phil,
With all due respect, how is it that you do not use a front and rear light while riding?
It was the middle of the day…..
The proposed chant wasn't "Let's go faithful!", Ok...
If we leave now we can get the front seat on the tour bus.
😂.. that clapping....
Clapping!
Best commentary! 😂🤣
Bravo
Sitting and waiting quietly.., not Phil's thing. That's good for the viewer!
Horns and the fact they are 1100 pounds and can out run you all day…but sure go snuggle with them Phil! Just having fun wish I was there today! Lol
"Buffalos have a great Whoop score" lol.
Should have done a slow clap!
Phil, you picked the wrong place for riding in Yellowstone. So many better places than the area Old Faithful that don't have nearly the traffic.
Not to be contrarian but those shoulders and those views looked pretty nice for a bike ride in a famous park. Sure, maybe it is not the gravel road inside Denali in Alaska, but I'd rather go for a ride in Yellowstone than not. And hey, it ain't Everesting, so that's good. :)
Compare to Teton which was full of separated bike paths and sits right next to Yellowstone, though! If you only have time for one and you want to do it by bike, no contest
@@worstretirementever Fair point, Phil, and you know I'm not really arguing, way too mellow to get all huffy and puffy about any of it. And it is all just that, for me at age 62, I have really known nothing but streets and trails--some bike paths and lanes, to be sure, but basically it has usually been me on the streets with the cars and trucks and all of that, so I live for shoulders and call 'em my bike lane and do get cranked when a motorist encroaches by driving with wheels to the right of that line and sending those bad vibrations. And the lack of a shoulder on a two-lane road is often it for me, especially when there is no shoulder plus trees and vegetation pushing you into the lane, like the two-lane road south to Seward in Alaska at the junction a handful of miles south of Girdwood. Plenty of shoulder and then, turn south and no shoulder and lots of vegetation and 18-wheelers bouncing on rutted asphalt with no room to spare and who knows how long that was deal but no deal for me, I turned around and that was fine with me, the risk was not worth it when it is supposed to be about sporty and scenic.
You should (really shouldn't) see it in winter talk about fumes from all the snowmobiles
Do snowmobiles not have emissions requirements? Catalytic converters and whatnot?
Ryanair ...... :( ( i will try to never fly with them ever again!)
You were a bit too close to the Bison. You should follow the rules on maintaining a safe distance.
All fun and games until a massive tectonic shift happens!
This was not a paid promotion for Yellowstone :)
That's why I fish and ride my bike. To enjoy getting back to nature.
Haven’t fished in 20 years, but I remember that catching a fish really had nothing to do with it for me. Probably best I stick to cycling :)
I always advocate for good foot hygiene
Pretty sure that was a Bison not a Buffalo?
"So Buffalo have a great Whoop score". Bored Phil is funny
Money shot.
If it’s sulphur it’s definitely rotten eggs, Emily might need to go see someone in she thinks that’s feet…
2:08, when no nut november ends
So you're saying that cycling in Yellowstone smells a lot like cycling behind my wife.
@Phil you should definitely read Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey.
It's always fun to watch a city slicker talk about the wilderness
Lol- great laugh - “being one with nature on carbon fiber bike with electronic shifting “ . Sometimes I think your funny without even trying. You could do stand up. “ play fetch- I need a tennis ball”
Leg warmers over shorts 🤮…almost unsubscribed
Overrated? That depends on one’s personal experiences and expectations.
you sir are much to close to those fur babies.
you described my username
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
😉
👏 👏 👏 💖
leg warmers over the top of your bib shorts, that's so anti -pro Phil, way to break out of the stereotype!
I’m grateful for fossil fuels and love cycling
Just so you know - it’s bison, not buffalo. Buffalo live in Asia and Africa.
What? No salty language from Emily? Unsubscribe...
She says to F off
@@worstretirementever Resubscribe! Shoo...that was close!
Twice I road the Cycle Greater Yellowstone ride, to benefit the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. We did not go in the park, but areas surrounding it, that they are trying to protect for wildlife. (Sadly, I think COVID killed the event for good.) There is some incredible and diverse cycling in the area.
