- Videos about the latest and greatest are always going to get a lot of views. We, who love photography, typically also love gear. For better or worse.
However, I have been losing interest in new gear for years. There is nothing wrong with it, I just find that the law of diminishing returns hits pretty hard when it comes to photography. Is the latest flagship sports camera from Canon better than an old 1ds? Sure it is. Is the Nikon Z8 better than an old Nikon D700? Yep. Is the Sony A7RV better than the old Sony A99? Yes.
But, does that make you a better photographer? Absolutely not.
Although modern cameras have a ton of modern conveniences and technological improvements, the price doesn't really justify the purchase. Especially if you are not a working professional that is relying on your camera to pay your bills. Particularly when there are so many good deals on used cameras. The amount of money you can save by buying last season's camera absolutely, by far, outweighs any minor improvements that have been made to this season's camera.
But, how low budget can we really get away with?
Whether you are an experienced photographer looking for a fun way to spend a little money, or you are (far more likely and often) someone who is brand new to photography and you are trying to break into this hobby as cheaply and easily as possible, this video might provide some helpful insight.
I purchased the cheapest full frame, professional camera on the market.
I purchased the cheapest lens that would fit this camera.
I used only available light.
I shot JPEG only.
I did not use a tripod or a remote shutter or any other tools.
Heck, I didn't even scout locations or spend time finding the "perfect" solutions to any issues I ran into.
If I accidentally underexposed? So what.
If my shutter speed was too slow and the photo turned out a bit blurry? Who cares.
If I needed to crank up the ISO? So be it.
This was worry free, hassle free, complication free, simple, old school
"just be in the moment" photography, straight to JPEG, straight out of camera.

Skyler, I loved your latest video about using an affordable camera. I didn't realize that a Canon Classic could be bought so cheaply. I cried softly as I watched your photo essay. The music was beautiful, the pictures awesome, the subjects, legendary. I am so glad that you included a good picture of yourself in the mix. Ellie is her usual beautiful self, and my grandsons: OMG! I purchased this camera brand new in 2007, shot weddings, landscapes, documetary, street, you name it. In 2023 I still have it and it is still going strong! Enjoy your Canon 5D Mark 1. Cheers, Ray.
I bought the 5D when it was released. It was my favourite camera for image quality - even above the 1Ds MkII I had as my main camera. It was a joy to use, and clearly as you have shown, still good enough to give professional results in 2023
I was just looking at a 1Ds mark ii, earlier today. Nobody really talks about those older 1Ds series cameras these days, so I don’t know what to expect. But it definitely caught my eye and has got me curious.
Still have the 5D mk1. Bought it used in 2009, 15 years ago, used it a lot and never upgraded. Still works great, no problems ever, still does the job. For me, the nicest lenses were the cheap and lightweight 50mm 1.8 mk2, 35mm f/2.0 non-IS and the not so cheap zeiss c/y 28mm 2.8, even though I own some L zooms. Probably the best digital camera ever produced.
Thanks for the video. Very well thought out. I just purchased a mint condition 5D mark ii my first full frame. Also a 50mm f1.8. Very inspirational looking a your photos with the camera and lens, with jpeg. Keep it up it helps us new to photography.

I just bought a 5d classic last week! The company sent the wrong battery for it, but the correct one (hopefully) arrives tomorrow and I can hardly wait to begin trying it out tomorrow. This episode is excellent...thanks!
I have three 5DC camera bodies as of now. Got each one of them for 130, 150 and 170 euros respectively. Two of them are mint but one of them is a bit battered but fully functional. So I thought to take the battered one and use it as my beach camera setup. I used gaffer tape in every litte opening where sand could find it's way through and combined with the 40mm F2.8 lens and a UV filter I've taken the most dreamy and lovely photos every with this setup during this summer of 2023. Plus with all the gaffer tape here and there everyone thinks this is a toy/cheapo Chinese camera and it doesn't draw that much attention.
That’s a good idea. I did something similar with an old E-X2f (regarding the gaffer tape). Never thought about doing it with the 5D classic, but it seems like it would lend itself well to this camera.
@@SkylerKing Indeed. Just use gaffer tape around the battery compartment area, on the hotshoe and around the ports on each side in order to be safe with sand. I also combined some brown packaging paper with gaffer tape to make a rather flexible yet small body lens cover which wraps around the lens and goes all the way back to the 5DC body in order to make sure the 40mm f2.8 pancake lens is totally protected. With the slightly blown highlights of the 5DC and the colour science of this camera, some of the beach photos that I took of my wife and son are just magic!

I go back and forth. I really can’t seem to make my mind up. I guess that’s why I still use them both.
just got a 6d for $300.... a 5dc on steroids in many ways (iso, resolution, better LCD, live view etc)... yet, for some reasons, i still prefer (but not by much) the files from the 5dc... they just look sharper despite being almost half the resolution of the 6d. probably has to do with their respective AA filter, the 5d being much weaker than the 6d.
The 6d seems to have a smoother, creamier shadow-to-highlight transition, probably due to the improved dynamic range.
that 40mm has to be the best bang-for-buck lens ever made.
i'd stay with Canon just for that one lens. they is no other equivalent in other brands that combines low cost, size, weight, IQ and AF. none that i can think of. and to me, 40mm is the most versatile focal length making it ideal for EDC/travel. i wish Canon had a 24 or 28mm version for FF.
I’ve got the 6d, as well, and absolutely love it. I agree with your view of how it compares to the 5d classic. And yeah, the 40mm is awesome. I love that focal length, anyway, but to be so unbelievably (almost impossibly) compact? While also having such good image quality? And fast focusing? You’d think you would have to pay an arm and a leg for such a lens. The only thing crazier than how cheap they are is that more people don’t own one.
@@SkylerKing that lens is so comically small, a few people have asked me "why don't you have a lens on your camera?"

love this video and love these images. 5d classic i got brand new over $3000 CAD so many years ago, once i got into full frame i was hooked. the 40mm pancake lens is pretty awesome i had that before too. hope to get another pancake lens soon! keep up the great videos!
I remember Zack Arias talking about that camera over 10 years ago and it still holds true. The prices back then were a bit different, but he explained in a lot of detail how getting a 5D + 35/2.0 + 85/1.8 will work for most professional use cases. I agree fully. Nowadays you could maybe try a first generation Sony A7 as well with a little more budget.

Completely agree with you! What I typically tell newbies who come to me with questions and salivating over the latest and greatest is that better/more gear won't make you a better photographer, just that they can provide more options. Obviously, if you're trying to do everything with a 50mm lens, you're going to be limited in what you can shoot but the point is have a valid reason for purchasing the latest and greatest. Once you have the basics covered, stop thinking about gear and concentrate on becoming a better photographer. I was recently forced to move into the mirrorless arena because of the silent shooting capability so I picked up two Canon R5s. Pros and cons with these cameras but overall, I still prefer my old standby SLR. For image quality, nothing beats that old 1DxII, IMO. Nice assortment of shots, sir.
The 1DxII is a great example of a camera that will be pretty much future proof for a very long time. It does so many things, so well, The spec sheet is still fantastic, even today. And they are getting downright “cheap” for what they are. I’m hoping to pick one up, soon.
Agree the 5D Classic is a great camera. Also being a Fuji user, I can see the quality of the FF images this camera produces SOOC and the files are small by today’s standards which is a bonus. There is something more organic with the images it produces - look less digital and natural and pleasing to look at. Something I enjoy and can get similar to, but not the same with the older Fuji bodies and lenses.
I agree, there seems to be a special look the the photos. I can't really narrow down exactly what it is, but there is something and I like it.
Yes, 12 mp is a sweet spot in full frame due to relatively large pixel size.
That’s why the modern Sony A7S series exists.
The Canon 5d is one of my 3 goto cameras. (together with the X-Pro1 and the Nikon D610.) Great camera for film like look just like the XPRO1. I have the same 40mm setup but also have the battery grip which not only stops the swapping but also gives a better grip for portrait shots. Cost only 49 euros.
I also did a vids on street with the 5d. Works well.
I looooved my old X-Pro1. One of my favorite cameras. I sold it, years ago, thinking it was no big deal and I could just buy another. Now, it’s hard to find them for a decent price (if I find one at all). I wish I still had it.

I started photography with entry-level models namely Canon 450D and 50D back in 2009. Now, I use only pro models mainly because, I know the differences and learned how to use them.
I’m a hobbyist so; don’t need the best of everything. Use DPP to process my RAW files. However, frequently shoot jpeg with my 5D Classic and 5D Mark III. The results are great.

My very first Canon (and the third camera I ever owned) was a 450D. Great little camera, really. I had the 50D, as well.
@@SkylerKingnice to know. What a coincidence! 450D was my first DSLR but 3rd digital camera as well. First was Olympus FE 340 followed by Canon Powershot Sx 110 IS P&S cameras. Still have a point & shoot for casual use. It's Powershot G5X.
Ha, it's my fave lens onto my 5D "Classic". It could compete with L-Zooms in terms of image quality. I'd have loved, *if* the lens would be F2..but F2.8 is also ok.
(edit) ppl are always drawn to the latest & greatest, i shoot up to 35mm SLRs from the late 60's, 1968 exactly. And enjoy it, have tons of fun with it. The gearheads, ppl with G.A.S. (gear aquisation syndrome) always lust for more MP, better, faster AF speed, and the latest buzz, video features, 8K/120fps, etc....whatever. I enjoy, love to shoot my old gear...and lenses, which often have a special way of rendering images, compared to todays offerings. Mostly into 35mm film, but digital...then 5D, D700...and other gear. I dislike too much MP, because my PC doesn't run it smoothly, i should built a new setup. But here's the thing, i prefer big pixels, and less MP onto a specific Sensor size (DX, APS-C or "FF" 36x24mm) Great Deal, i paid the full price for my 40/2.8 STM into 2012. My #1 5D was being mint condition, but i paid like 850 bucks for it, many moons ago, into 2008.
I bought a Canon 5D back in 2007. Bought a Canon 7DMkII on 2018. Know which one gets the most use? Yup...5D. You can buy them used in good condition for almost a song. Your photography is amazing.
Thank you! That was what I was realizing. As the years went by, I was buying newer and more expensive cameras. But most of the time, I still preferred my older gear.
Have this exact kit. This inspired me to dust the old girl off and shoot some JPEGs!

I always recommend either this or the Nikon D200 as a first digital camera.

Congrats on the new 5D Classic! My favorite lens to pair with it would be my 35mm f1.4, but this little 40mm f2.8 really is a great lens.
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO it’s just an abbreviation of classic. Nothing more, nothing less. I suppose it’s a term used to highlight its status as a legendary camera.
Nice. Had a 5D back in the day. Shot a ton of portraits with it, some ended up in national mens magazines, in store ads, billboards etc...just picked one up again recently for $160. Love the more filmic look of that sensor and honestly, the Canon colors and specifically the skin tones have gotten worse over the years. I absolutely hate the look from the newer R series cameras and have returned the R7 and sold off the R6 I had. Panasonic has much better colors these days IMO. Anyhow, I also picked up a 6D again after having one years ago. Love the look from that sensor as well. Only paid $219 for it. Fun stuff.
Yeah, the "Canon colors" we all heard so much about had their origins with the 5d classic. Jump forward nearly 20 years, and they just aren't the same colors.
Great touching video loved the photos. Who the heck needs film or one of these 30 frame a second $2,000 cameras when you can get results like this for 200 bucks?

I usually use JPEG myself, and I'd be interested to know whether the Standard Picture Style settings were left at the Canon default or whether you adjusted them?
I have a 6D myself, and increase colour saturation to +2 and Sharpness from +3 to +4. I only use Standard or Portrait. For Portrait I set: +2 Sharpness, -2 Contrast and +1 colour saturation. Slightly different sensor though, but both great sensors!
I left everything at the default values. I didn’t even try to switch the picture profile to anything other than “standard” until the last couple of days, where I switched to “portrait” while at dinner, then to “neutral” during a raining day, because I had just read an article about the neutral picture profile on the 5d classic being a favorite for one photographer, in particular.
@@SkylerKing when you refer to 'default settings' does this mean (also) that you have white balance on auto?
Yes, white balance was set to auto.
is the 40mm your favorite lens? I am thinking of getting one, have been using my 5Dc with old nikkor AIS glass but wanted an autofocus option too
I wouldn’t say it’s my absolute favorite, but it has become one of my favorites, for sure. It’s a great lens.

A lot of your shots are iso 100. Is there a reason why you choose to shoot your ISO that low?
The only way to use “auto iso” is if you set the camera to auto mode (where it chooses all of the settings, you have no control). So, I typically set the ISO to 100 during the day. Which also works out pretty well even in dimly lit areas. It’s not until I can hear the shutter speed slow down that I think to stop and bump it up higher.
The cheapest way to get into photography - i'd say pick up an 35mm SLR with usual 50/1.7, F1.8 or F2 prime, and start to learn everything from scratch. That's what i did into 87 (Pentax MX, SMC-A 50/1.7)...before, i had serveral compact cameras, from 84 on. A 35mm SLR does cost next to nothing, any Yashica, Minolta, Nikon would do...for example.
Can i ask 5D classic users , how do i get my 5D to preview on display JPEG , i want JPEG due to colors , cant replicate it . But that means hitting the WB spot on , but how to do that when 5D is previewing RAW files . Anyone noticed .
The preview should be of whatever picture profile you have selected. Is yours not doing that? You can test it by switching to b&w and seeing if that is what shows on the screen.
@@SkylerKing it does show BW like you predicted , but on a RAW image , not JPEG .
You have RAW + JPEG 2 images both BW so just because its showing BW does not mean its showing your JPEG settings im sure it does not , infect i tried it now you can do the same , set it to RAW plus JPEG , then play with TONE shift , you will see no tone shift in preview , but load the pictures on the PC you will see it .
This means nothing for JPEG setting is shown , what it is showing is imbedded RAW preview , you cant even see JPEG in memory , it only shows 1 image when there should be 2 one RAW one JPEG , or maybe that too can be set . I dont know , far as i know it shows only 1 image . Maybe if i force it to shoot JPEG only , then it will show everything from the preset , but then i wont have RAW in case something goes wrong , for the most part more then 50% i can get spot on what i want , but sometimes due to light reflecting of the colored surface , or in woods , you get color cast , color shift , the skin gets wood bark shift for example , but this is no problem if people can see it in a context , but if you isolate the the subject , then color will not be good ...
I guess i could use more modern camera with external display , or 6D with Wifi and then see the JPEG on the phone .
But i like my 5D , the only thing i would pick up from the table is maybe 5Dmk2 , or Nikon D700 or D3.
And if i had medium format film camera then i would use that , but developing film is expensive im a family photographer , there is no income to cover those costs of film developing .
@@SkylerKing But thank you for answering in any case , but you will have to look in to it proper , i know its hard , takes time i my self spent 2 hours trying to see what is going on , but no luck , at least in RAW + JPEG mode .maybe JPEG mode will then priorities JPEG settings , but in RAW + JPEG it prioritizes RAW and does not even show JPEG in memory only whey you can see that JPEG far as i know is to transfer the photos to PC . At least for Canon 5Dmk1 . But i noticed that on 5Dmk2, 6D and some others . They all show 1 image , not 2 . But maybe there is a way to tell it to show both RAW and JPEG when previewing images .
No RAW? I really don't understand this trend of self-torture like getting a nice classic sportscar and driving it only in first gear or backwards 😂 It's zero pleasure to me and it's rather a pain or sorrow. For me it's not about the new gear. It's about the specific gear that I want to try or see someone trying it. The 5D classic was the new gear 20 years ago. And it can be fun to watch retro camera reviews. But the idea of me actually using a dream camera for 20 years instead of getting it later when the party is over, bothers me more, than some trendy new-gear-phobia and ascetic-photography prejudice. Just get the 5D, use it fully and don't be late to the next party 😄! Not all next parties, just at least one. Such parties can take a few years, 5 or 10 maybe.
I think he did it to show that you need not be a raw wizard to shoot photos that you will love. As a challenge of what you will get if shooting in default setting, no post-processing. ;
@@ShutterNChill And I wasn't talking about being a RAW wizard. JPEGs are like processed food, cheap, but very overpriced processed food.
@@0eckajpegs are ultimately what you'll be ending up with anyways unless you send TIFF files to a printing lab. Cameras spend a lot of time trying to make their jpeg engine good, and a lot of beginners would have a hard time (and time in general) to match the camera's quality. I shot jpeg for a while until I found that missing the white balance cost me the shot too often. If you customize the profile settings you can essentially make Lightroom presets, more or less.
@@mikafoxx2717 Unfortunately, their jpeg engine still is much worse than a proper RAW image processing. And there is a little (Auto) button in Lightroom that makes everything better (if you wish). With every new camera I set RAW+jpeg for a few weeks, just to see the difference, and I always end up shooting RAW only. Because the camera jpegs are a waste of time and megabytes. Those jpegs are never the pictures that I want to see. Those jpeg engines are too aggressive and clueless, they don't preserve fine detail, they are destructive and they simply cannot comprehend the color properly or at least realistically.

I have a habit of going overboard with my commentary in most videos. I was trying to keep this one a bit more concise for the sake of variety. I do appreciate the feedback, though, and will take that into consideration for the next video.

Sounds like you've bought yourself a counterfeit 40mm STM lens, which there is ton of on flea bay. For many years the 50mm/f1.8 II and later 50mm STM lens were produced in Ch... as Yo...., the 40mm is also made in the same... garage. The 40mm lens is $300 at retail where I live (middle of Europe) so I don't see how you are finding a genuine one for $85. Otherwise love your videos.
I live in Taiwan, and the average price for a used 40mm f2.8 seems to range from $65 to $130 depending on when you look and the condition. I chalk it up to the lack of popularity, around here.

That typically isn’t an issue, here. Aside from the fact that all the ports are strictly regulated and there are pretty substantial import fees applied to anything coming into the country, people here are very meticulous about details and paperwork. If you buy something second hand out of a shop, they typically have the original box, paperwork, warranty card, and sales receipt. All serial numbers between a lens/camera/etc are matched to the paperwork and checked to confirm authenticity. The shops then provide a standard one month warranty for cheaper items and a longer warranty for more expensive items. Even if you are buying something from Facebook marketplace, the first questions typically asked of the seller are about paperwork and proof of authenticity (and if the seller can’t provide that, they typically have a very hard time selling their item). That type of stuff is taken very seriously, here. Not just with camera gear, with everything.

5dC really takes nice pictures. Modern cameras are just so ridiculous with their 60mp and 40 frames per second electronic shutters. Also the new RF lenses are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced.
I’ve noticed that the RF lenses are also bigger and heavier than the EF lenses, in many cases 🤔
Those result look really oldskool, the low dynamic range combined with analog simulation digital look.
I hate it. Some people think it`s wonderful because they got used to the film look.
I like realism, the new generation mirrorless camera`s give that.
I understand what you mean. But, just to put it out there, the 5D classic is perfectly capable of taking photos that look "modern" and "real". The first step is shooting in RAW, then it gets into how the white balance is set, the lens being used, lighting, editing style, etc.

I think the screen is complete crap and off color without any contrast, it`s unusable.

Your 5D classic isn't as crisp as mine. Either the lens or camera is off or your settings. And WHY JPEG only???? Kinda lame
You can't tell how "crisp" any camera is rendering based on a CZcams video. It's the original jpeg, then compressed in the video editing software, then compressed again by CZcams. And I explained the reason why I chose jpeg for this video.
Like so many others of these styles of videos I call BS on the cost for the camera and lens. Just the lens would set you back about 100 usd. But I like the sentiment. 250 USD would be more likely, but still cheap.
Except I started the video by showing the typical prices of the items, locally. And those were the online prices, which are typically 5-10% higher than the in-store price since sellers have to pay the online platforms a fee for each item they successfully sell online.
