It's one of those great films that you'd only want to watch once and never again. The rape scene I felt was not exploitive but rather showed the audience that the horror of being raped is not meant to be digestible or easily forgotten. The film moves backwards in time but you cannot unsee what you saw and therefore cannot take refuge even when the characters are happy and carefree. It's a horror movie where there is no happy place one can retreat to.
Man, that was SO well put. I guess those would kinda be the words I would use (had I been able to articulate it 🤭). Thx, it's always nice to find a more accurate description. Have a groovy day!
This film impressed me a lot, and honestly- as a rape victim myself, I really appreciated the scene. It was of course horrific and really, really hard to sit through, but it was the first time that I had seen a depiction of SA that actually felt like it properly showed how terrible the act is. Everyone else seems to want to pan away, to imply the horror, but us real life assault victims don't get to do that. This movie, in that scene, told the story of how depraved and life ruining and exhaustingly terrible it really is, and I absolutely love Irreversible for it.

I saw this movie "by mistake". I was at a friend's place, and he lended me a bunch of DVD to watch later, and I watched most of them without checking the synopsis or anything, so when this one happened, I thought it was just a movie like any other.
Problem was, I was alone, a little bit drunk, and depressed when I saw it... Didn't improve my mood a bit.
I went on a Noé spree several years back one winter when I was pretty suicidal and aside from “Love” which I’d already seen a year or two before that, I watched everything of his from the original “Carne” to “Climax.” Aside from “Enter the Void,” pretty much everything else just made me feel worse because he’s known for being very nihilistic, even though I enjoyed the films themselves on an artistic level.
I bought it second hand from a video store and took it back and got a different one in place of that. It messed me up. I didn't finish it or finish the long scene that got me to turn it off.
Yeah if anyone feels good after watching a Gaspar Noe film there's definitely something deeply wrong with them 🤣

"Irreversible" came out two years after Christopher Nolan's reversal cut film "Memento" was released, and both films are still hauntingly amazing.

Irreversible told chronologically is not a good story; told in reverse cuts, it's one of the most beautifully meaningful stories ever told.
Have you seen the "Straight cut" then? I haven't & I don't think it will have the same impact as reverse.

I have never watched it as it sounds pretty horrific TBH. Only bit I've seen is the fire extinguisher bit as a friend played it during a VJ set once at a rave.
One of the reasons the reverse chronology is effective is because the person you finally get to know is someone you know is gone. You might literally go from violence to peace, but every viewer knows what is coming for Alex.
It's crazy how, in a movie where we already know what happens, and yet we're still hoping something changes. Every section of the movie just feels like a chance for us to change it
The "fire extinguisher" scene and the "kerb jaw" scene in American History X IMO Are the most disturbing kills in a non " horror" movie
Agreed, they are both rough. I had "steeled" my mind at the prospect of a depiction of rape in Irreversible but the fire extinguisher scene, in some ways, was a lot worse as it's more graphic and took me by surprise after all the talk about depicting a rape.
The scene of DeNiro shooting the "John" repeatedly in the face in Taxi Driver is rough too.

The scene in the tunnel made me cover my eyes with my hands like a child, i don't think any other film has brought up this primal reaction for violence, it felt awful. I love this movie and i loved your review, your channel is awesome man, i share your videos with every friend that is trying to get into the world of kino
I was covering my eyes way before "The tunnel scene". so much so that I actually missed the fact that it wasn't Le Tenia getting extinguished lol. I didn't find out until I looked at some YT breakdowns. Easily the most distressing movie I've ever scene.
God her muffed screams, him constantly calling her a whore even though he is the biggest whore. I wanted to slap him, so hard that he wouldn't survive.
Honestly to this day Netflix's Beasts of No Nation is still the most shocking horrible movie I've seen, I still kinda wish I had not seen it
Similar concept to Pulp Fiction with the Vincent Vega story. We see him die yet at the end of the film he walks out of the diner with a sense of optimism and hope and we almost forget he was murdered.
Not murder, self-defense. He was there to kill Butch, remember?
Two men walked out of the theater after the fire hydrant scene when I saw it. One of them was seriously distraught. And there was only a handful of people there.
France's walking tunnels are kind of scary honestly.
The fire extinguisher scene reminded me of the scene in pan's labyrinth with the bottle.
irreversible is a unique film for me in that, while i can appreciate it immensely on a technical level, i never want to see it again. still, i seek out every new film by gaspar noe and think very highly of irreversible. i cant think of any other film that i feel this way about.

It's been a long time since I've seen I Stand Alone/Carne but my guess would be that by the time of the ending of I Stand Alone, his perspective had changed somewhat. He probably saw how awful a person he is, and came to the the conclusion that none of it matters. Turning bad deeds, to simply just deeds.
Nice breakdown! I don’t find it to be a hopeless or nihilistic film (despite the closing title), because at the end you awaken back into your real life and you at least still have the chance to reevaluate your life, almost like Scrooge in Christmas Carol (ha!).

Enter the Void and Irreversible are great films. Noe revisits the topic of relationships and interpersonal failures with Love which while pornographic and somewhat narcissistic (the main character wants to name his son Gaspar) is still compelling

Now I'm really intrigued about Gasper Noe's films. I haven't seen a ton of work from foreign filmmakers, but maybe I'll check him out. I recently watched Buffalo '66 because of your "literally me" video, and I couldn't help but notice how both it and Irreversible seem to take different approaches in tackling similar themes pertaining to our past and future, as well as the weight of our decisions in affecting it.

I don't blame the people that walked out, the film was more horrifying than The Exorcist because things like that happen every day.
I can't watch that rape scene either, it guts me more than the guy getting his head bashed in. I'm thankful for the Beethoven and the blue skies, that is the end and beginning. All we have is life, until we don't.

Another piece of foreshadowing is around the subject of sex; Marcus is emotional and passionate whereas Pierre is rough and blunt. On their path of revenge Marcus is emotional and passionate about finding The Tapeworm which screws him over after he attacks the wrong man and is taken advantage of, Pierre on the other hand, wielding a phallic object, essentially skullfucks Marcus' attacker to death.
Fun fact: the guy who plays Tenia was a really successful kick-boxer who’s matches are actually available on CZcams. Who knows how he got the role?

I watch it in theater, at the end nobody said nothing will people was leaving the screening room. Frankly even today, more than 20 years after, I can't tell if it was a good film or not.

No matter what you think of the film, I think Noé does a pretty good job making it fair with the backwards narrative. Even before... that scene, you are tested if this film simply isn't for you. First, you see the brutal murder accompanied by the nauseatingly shaky camera and drone sounds. Then, you see Monica Bellucci's mangled face while she's carried away on a strecther. This slowly and creepily leads up to the tunnel scene, and by that point, you already know what's coming up.
If the movie was told chronologically, nothing would build-up to the halfway point and it would be just audience exploitative shlock plain and simple. The scenes that come after give another perspective to the story because they're blissfully unaware of what's coming up and it indeed shows how fragile life can be.

Really enjoy your channel. Yes this is a not fun movie to watch. The title is perfect. Showing the audience that things a person goes through and even up to the deed of murder is Irreversible. I have it in my queue and will watch again. I watched it 1st in my surround sound and it has a tone that will make you crazy because of the constant pitch. Cannot wait for your next one.
I really enjoyed this video, it was really well constructed and explained. People thinking he copied memento shows how shallow people look at films. It's so strange that angst is one of his favourite films because I watched that and I stand alone on the same day!

9:50 I always interpreted the person walking into the Tunnel and withnessing the event, and leaving that that Person, went to get help to inform the emergency services, or maybe to get another person to help him / her to stop the rape.

In the end, it became that film with THAT SCENE with Monica Belucci.... and of course, we want it to be the most realistic possible, because "of course" of artistic reasons.

This is not a movie that I will ever watch again, but I'm glad I saw it once! It really is a visceral movie and definitely made me feel, not good feelings though 😕
Watching the end which is the beginning, is heart breaking because you know what happens. And it's so sad.
I was shocked but wanted to see til the end. Mind you half the people left in the first 15 minutes and by the end of movie maybe a quarter was still in the theatre. it was a expirience.

Are you sure? The movie overall is one of the most impactful I've ever seen, right up until the end. Maybe some people forget all but the most horrific scene.

I think Gaspar Noé is one of the greatest director alive. Rather it is artistic execution (Enter the void is remarkable) or catching on film such a feeling of nightmare and utter dread... there is no one that will kick you as hard in the nuts then Gaspar.

the story from carne is in the wire as well, only it's johny weeks telling bubbles about the plot with the blood on her pants, only it's told as it it happened in baltimore.
I only know this as I've watched the wire in it's entirety over 100 times now (not an exaggeration, I have watched it around 10 to 20 times a year since it came out) because I've seen it so many times, I've picked up on the most minute details.

My Girlfriend brought it into the arthouse theatre she manages, and boy, did it ever get a rise out of people...When we finally watched it, we were one of maybe 20ish people, and more so one of two duos that were roughly the age of thirty. Everyone else was not far off from the age of Argento and Lebrun, by the end of the film it was just us and that other couple...
