I've seen what too much "minding your own business" brings. A farmer who used the adoption process to "adopt a slave". A young girl impregnated by her father as her 16th birthday gift. There were red flags flying everywhere in both cases, but people were too far into the "mind your own business" to do anything about it.

I went to this high school. I graduated in 2014 but this principal has always been like this. Two girls were dating and he threatened to expel them both if they didn’t break up. He also called me into the office and implied that I was promiscuous and having sex for money because I went to school wearing a small lace choker in my senior year. He “cared” a lot about his students living their lives in sin but somehow had no idea that the girl’s soccer coach was having an inappropriate sexual relationship with one of my classmates. St. Pierre needed to be fired a decade ago.

Unfortunately, as Hemet pointed out, this principal knows how to game the system to avoid direct accounting of his presumptive behavior. Given this, if a diligent entity could get enough affidavits and witnesses together, they could sue the school board for his removal, if they refused to act outright.

And also for being singled out, for, as far as I can tell, the student actually dancing in that twerking manner wasn’t called in, or made an example of, just Haley. Which means the Principal was “trying to send a message” and was looking to be vindictive, and hence the delay until the scholarship deadline was passed, before he made his even vague “walk back” in words not actions. Similarly, if he “stepped away” so things can blow over, and he can get back to forcing such on children that attend that public school in just a semester or year, that is not him being held accountable for his actions.

I am a Canadian Baptist who attended a small, one room rural elementary school in the 1950s and early 1960s. All of the families knew each other and we were all Christians. We sang hymns in music class and memorized Bible verses, we celebrated Easter and Christmas, and had an annual Christmas concert. I loved it and wasn’t conscious that it would be a problem for anyone. As a young adult, my husband and I had friends from other non-Christian religions and some who were agnostics or atheists. As well, we had learnt about the legal separation of church and state. As a result, we came to realize that religion in schools was wrong. My husband and I had loved our school traditions but we knew it was wrong because a public school should be public, not denominational. Later, I was studying history which included religious history, at a former Baptist university. Divinity College was still on the campus and its retired dean was our minister and several of its professors were in our congregation. They told me about Canada’s fight to resist a state religion and to preserve the separation of church and state, and how the Baptists in Canada fought to keep them separate. Our minister even said that it wasn’t the school’s place to teach religion, that if parents wanted their children to learn about religion, they should take them to Sunday school and church and should teach it in their own homes.
My husband and I stopped attending church when we lived in the USA and didn’t return after we moved back to Canada because the Baptists have become too conservative and judgmental about social behaviours. Everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, rights over one’s own body, right to love whichever sex they choose, right to self-identify with any gender, and so on. Religion can bring individual emotional support but it is too often used for evil purposes, especially when it condemns those who don’t believe or behave as a particular religion thinks that they should. We still consider ourselves to be Christians but my husband and I believe a theocracy is truly evil and contrary to what Christ taught.

One step they could take for a lawsuit is to contact the scholarship board and see if they would testify to the likelihood of her obtaining the scholarship. This feels similar to defamation cases where actors lost roles because of lies released to smear them. If she had a "very strong chance" at being awarded the scholarship, she might be able to make the School Board pay for a near or equivalent amount in compensatory damages. And yes School Board, because the actions the Principal took are actions that involve his offical capacity.

Fundamentalists think all they have to do is say “sorry” or stay home a few days without any real change in attitude. No! That principal violated her civil rights, publicly humiliated her, and cost her loss of a scholarship. That's a lawsuit BECAUSE He will do it again if he doesn’t make comparable amends to her. It is unethical for him to not compensate *her.* An insincere apology isn’t compensation.

I am a Christian. This is ridiculous. I hope they sue. Wouldn't it be ironic if the principal responsible for her loss of scholarship has to pay for her entire college education. Also him resigning is his way of trying to keep his retirement, if you're a stat employee and you're fired you lose everything. But if you resign before then, they can't withhold it.

It wouldn’t be the first time he’s discriminated against lesbians. I went to this school, and my junior year this girl in my psychology was sobbing because St. Pierre had pulled her I. The office and threatened to expel her if she didn’t break up with a girl she was openly dating. It was absolutely disgusting and I’m glad he’s finally being scrutinized for his abhorrent treatment of students based on his religious beliefs.

To all concerned, here's what an apology entails. 1) Admission of wrongdoing. 2) Addressing the wrongdoing, IE, taking corrective actions to redress said wrongdoing. 3) Seeking forgiveness only after parts 1 and 2 have been accomplished. Apologies are not conditional, IE, "I'm sorry IF someone was offended." They are not made under duress. A genuine apology comes from an understanding of fault and the desire to fix the situation one created.

I was talking to an older gentleman who helped the church, and I commented on how the gymnasium would make a great dance floor. He said “oh no, Baptists don’t dance.” I told him it wasn’t that hard, you just put on some good tunes and get out there and shake it. It turns out that good Baptists don’t do anything that is fun.
