  • Let's install and program the brand-new ABS module on this 2018 Jeep Wrangler and ship it back to the customer.
The Jeep throws a curve ball in the programming procedure, so it might be time to pay the local dealer a visit :)

Well, I usually don't post videos until the final repair is 100% verified and customer drives the vehicle for at least a couple weeks...watch till the end. The Jeep will be back in a future episode ;)

That’s why it’s nice to have multiple scan tools. Some of the special functions in our tools don’t always work as they are supposed to. I had a sonata hybrid in with a low hybrid battery and my launch tool had the force engine start procedure to recharge the hybrid battery but it just would not work. Hooked up the snap-on and it started right up and charged the battery. It’s nice to have a launch, Autel, snap-on, and a cardaq to use with the factory stuff when necessary. It’s certainly not feasible for most people but when working for an independent on high volume of all makes/models it’s basically a necessity.

It's just an expensive trail toy. It's bound to have problems being splashed and banged around. New jeeps are just show toys. They are so rough going through the woods unless you upgrade all the suspension out (really expensive options) to make it softer instead of taller maybe it would be a good trail rig. I'd just wear a coat and buy a razer or other trail designed toy with a travel suspension. You could make a crawler out of it but then you'd have to worry about crushing body panels. With loads of modules and connectors all over this thing, I wouldn't want to drive it anywhere near a trail and keep it out of every northern state in the country. These usually drive fine in California.

Ivan.. You gotta wrap that plug with some zip ties-- under the front wheel, with the broken tabs. There's nothing keeping it from rattling loose really. They have those folding locks, but they don't work if the tabs are broken; and when they rattle loose, it lets water in and shorts easy.. Given that the wheel is right there-- I'd probably just wrap everything in plastic ziplock sandwich bags. lol

I found it amazing that one module going bad caused so much havoc. It certainly doesn't help that there are no inner fenders as well. Even though the connectors are sealed and the wires have plastic insulation, water and moisture still gets in. I work for the phone company and used to fix the phone cables outside and water was one of our biggest enemies. Plastic insulation will eventually allow water to get in and corrode the wires and there are also salts and such on the road that add to it. In this case, you also have the wire harnesses that are exposed to the elements that can get water in them and cause shorts and ground ckts out. Wonderful diagnosis on what looked like a giant mess. Good Luck.

This is supposed to be a “rugged off road vehicle” but is apparent it could not survive two or three trips through a foot of water. Like they say, necessity is the mother of invention, maybe some day a refurb kit will be available to ruggedize the city vehicles… I have a 1967 Kaiser m715 Jeep. I can fix anything on it with a pliers and a combo screwdriver …. And a hammer! ahh the good ole days…

Ivan, been sitting on pins and needles waiting for Part 4. Your work is brilliant but my overall impression regarding this vehicle is that it has been abused to the point it may not be repairable. Every connector you touched has been a challenge to put back together even for your most talented and patient hands. And then the fender wells need to be replaced. Without those its just a matter of time before rocks, gravel and water take their toll. In this case it looks like that time is about two weeks. Thanks again for the scope data from Part 3. @Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics , if you find that this problem returns in the future. You might want to look at the infotainment system control board. In my 2018 ram 2500hd, this is what has been causing problems (and they refuse to replace or fix). In my vehicle its due to a leak in the dash thats been there since manufacture. In some versions of FCA products. This unit acts as a intermediary for brakes system, dash, GPS, key fobs and the climate control and seat and wheel heaters. Food for thought if the problem persists.

If a Brake Module is bad and won't always operate the pump on command, I like to run the pump off a fused wire right from the battery and listen to the pump, if it sounds loud or raspy, the high load from the pump may be taking out the electronic module. You could also check with an amp meter in line of you can determine the correct expected load.
Same for a blower motor possibly killing the resistor/controller.

Wondering if cutting off the connectors and soldering jumpers would fix the issue for good.

Maybe an input from the ABS module is disrupting the CAN bus making it seem like the ABS module is at fault? But I’m glad CZcams has recommended me your channel because dang your good

A great series Ivan. Sad to see its not over! The case study continues. It is a shame the Think Tool Pro didn't program the module despite saying it had. Will you follow up with the Think Tool people? it would be nice to know the outcome re the tool.

You can live with it telling you "I can't". Different story with "I did" but didn't.

Those large cam lock connectors are so finicky I wonder if there’s a way to clamp them tightly when they are broken. Maybe a C clamp that’s left in place or similar.
