  • Removing paint with a heat gun.
    I have been a home owner for 20 years and have done plenty of painting and re-painting. I have always hated removing old paint and often just painted over the old paint. I can't believe that I have never used a heat gun to remove paint before. It is really easy and I actually really like this method for removing paint.

      You are welcome. Thanks for watching. I am actually a much bigger fan of dawn, salt and vinegar now for killing weeds. If you are interested here is the video czcams.com/video/kGpmXAyJV8k/video.html

    great video - love the weed idea as well...If you had to do it over would you buy a more expensive heat gun or do you like the one you have? I am interested in fusing plastic and PVC do you think it will handle that?

      Hi Thanks for watching. I am happy with my inexpensive heat gun. To be honest I don't even like using the higher heat setting. :-) I think it would work for the applications you are interested in but I would definitely use a good respirator.

      Cindy I agree i bought an 11$ like 400 degree heat gun. Thinking like men do, or i do ( that i always need more) i bought a more expensive one that get's to 1100 and i can't even use it . Ha. Would you recommend using it very cautiously on a a guitar that i stained but let the stain drip over the side and don't know how to remove without stiripping original stain.

    Can this be used on metal? I have a metal stool with years of paint(its about 50yrs.old....my grandmother kept it in her kitchen for her grand and great grandchildren to set on while she was cooking)on it. I want to refinish it and use in my kitchen

      Hi Sharon,
      Thanks for your question. I have not tried removing paint from metal. My guess is that the paint would still bubble up and that you could scrape it off but my concern would be that the metal stool would be very hot as well. You could try it but I would recommend wearing heat resistant gloves for sure.

    So the heat gun doesn't get down to the bare wood? Would you have to use a stripper on that final layer?

      To be honest I don't know but it seems promising. I am curious. Let me know how it turns out. Don't forget to wear all your protective gear. :-)

      Thank you for answering and yes , it helps with the runoff, on the side of the guitar, but i'm not to use it on the bridge and you're right have to be careful, heat gun on low, remember what you're working with and safety first. Thank you for your reply:)

    An hour to do one drawer seems time consuming. Like you could run to the store and buy more stripper if you ran out several times. The gun heats the paint and makes fumes just like the stripper. I’m gonna go with stripper on this one but the weed trick is new and I will def use that on my front porch steps

    I am desperately trying to get the paint off of an old rattan chair, do you think a heat gun would be the way to go for me? I've tried the citristrip and it's a pain in the, and I was using SO much

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  Před rokem +1

      Hi Bobbie, Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you. The heat gun will work but you still need to be able to use a scraper to remove the paint which might be difficult on the rattan. You could try a wire brush. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 🙂

      @@UpcycleDesignLab Thank you so much, there is braiding on the chair, I might be too chicken to use a wire brush on it, I'm going to try to get my hands on a new stripper that I just found out about, QCS? I've seen a few reviews on it and it looks good, but I'm also really interested in the heat gun, so many uses for so many crafts lol

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi thanks for your question. You can damage the wood by over heating it but the paint finish comes off well before you reach that point.

    I like the way you remove the paint off with heat gun, but other the weed removing, the gun uses is expensive, time taker, the bush cuter is the best way for weed removal.
