How to Hay Small Acreage

  • It used to be difficult to justify the cost of putting up hay if you only have a few acres. You had to get a huge baler and a swather, and that can get expensive. But not anymore!
    Varner Equipment has a package deal that's tailor made for homeowners, horse enthusiasts, and farmers who have 5 to 20 acres and want to plant hay without hiring help!
    Check out this video where Devin shows how you can cut, rake, and bale using a small 47 horse power tractor. Turn your field into small, manageable round bales that you can feed to your animals.
    Go to VarnerEquipment.com to check out everything else we have!

    I think the mower and rake would be awesome, as for the baler though, i feel at that point it would be easier just to get a small square baler. 😂👍❤️

As an older fellow I was alright with climbing in and around the older tractor and impliments fixing this, replacing that, sharpening and asking a mechanic about the other but in the end I was a half time farmer and half time mechanic. With new smaller equipment I am a farmer who can come back in the evenings to do an hour of maintenance.

    If you have a small farm operation (which is why you'd buy these in the first place) the payback period for this equipment is so long that it makes no sense to buy it. Somehow the equipment needs to get cheaper or it just makes no sense for anyone who can do math.

    • @acdii
      @acdii Před 2 lety +1

      I just got into this myself and found a New Holland 273 only needs 17 HP to run efficiently. I am still repairing the side rake so don't have a total cost, but so far between a JD 1209 mower, NH 273 baler and an IH 35 rake I am all set to mow, rake and square bale for $4K. While I could run it all with my 2001 Kubota B2410, I got a deal on a new L4060HSTC, so will have two tractors that will save time since I can mow with the big one, switch over to the baler, rake with the small one and pull a trailer behind it as I bale. My biggest outlay is on the tractor, but it does much more than just hay, and needed a bigger tractor anyway. The baler needs NO work, just some paint, the mower needs a bearing installed, which was included with the sale. The rake got damaged transporting it home and required the left drive axle to be replaced.

      It depends on your area. This set up is mostly for hobby farmers, or farmers with only a few acres. This small round baler is a little more cost effective than a brand new small square baler. You can purchase used small square balers for around this price, but they may have more maintenance than a new baler.

      We ran a New Holland super 69 with kicker on hilly ground behind a Ford 8n for many years on hills in upstate NY. Today's lawn mowers have more horse power than 8N had grant it we only used 10 foot hay wagons behind baler and tractor knew when they were getting full. These pieces are over priced toys for people with more money than brains just the price of the baler and the belt rake you could buy a decent used older hay operation including tractor. For the whole operation shown here including tractor you are up in the 50,000 range or more you can buy a good used 100+ horse tractor and all the other needed equip to bale hay for far less money. I just got an International 1466 with 4000hrs and a nice New Holland 7450 mower from our neighbor that is retiring for $16,000 that is pretty much the price of just the baler shown here.

      We have ran into this a couple times. Both times you could use the mower and the rake no problem but the baler had a hard time hooking up and the drive line sat at a really steep angle on the baler. So to answer your question the mower and the rake would work fine but I wouldn't recommend the baler for that size of tractor.
