- Austin invests $600 into a hay baler that a neighbor was selling, not sure if it will even work. Can Austin fix the issues with the baler and get the cut hay up out of the field before it ruins?
Good job getting started.
A few tips
1. Stop the pto after you tie the bale.
2.. get an owners manual and read it
3.pull out of the row when the bale is the size you want. Start tieing the bale as you go to a spot where you want to drop the bales. ( Or you could back up 25 feet or so from the hay in the wind row) Again stop the pto when finished tieing. Then dump the bale.
4. Pull away from the bale before you lower the tailgate.( Don't want to bend the tailgate or break something) Then restart the pto.

Thank you for all the tips! The reason I don’t stop the pto when I raise the gate, is because my baler has a big belt in the bottom to roll the bale out. If I stop the pto the bale will get stuck.
And grease it well ..it looks dry on all the bearings and chains. His hands were not dirty after handling the chain. LOL that means lube me please.
His method of thinking repairs out is spot on when working on old farm equipment. Don’t give up on it and keep fixing and replacing worn items and it will work very well!!!

Well done. If you’ll back up 15-20 feet while you’re tying off your bale, it’ll give you more time and space to get your gate back shut before it starts picking up hay. Later balers can come with kickers to eliminate having to back up. You did a outstanding job, nice bales. Also, you need to buy yourself a spray can of motor cycle chain lube to keep your chains oiled up. Awesome purchase! Blessings!!
Since this was my first time running a baler it took some getting used too. I’ve baled a few fields since then and have figured out that backing up will definitely help. Thanks for all the tips.

It takes about 2 years of running a machine to get the bugs out.
Get ahold of the owners manual it has all you need to make the adjustments.
Take your time with the old equipment and you will do fine.

Austin, great that right when you started and hit a piece of wire, that it was not bad enough to have to have to spend the time to repair it all, and could get to cutting the hay ! WOOOO WHOOO. I had one of those, my god what a painful experience. It was a disaster stopped more times than going. Bearings belts chains, just constant trouble. Finally one afternoon it went on fire (from yet another bearing) I hitched it off and let it go. I replace it with a welger 4x4 Rp 12 never looked back still have a welger although a new one.

@@RockWellAcresFarm2023 The older stuff is typically built far better than anything currently produced... and is far simpler, with less things to go wrong. As such it is generally easier to repair. Stay away from ANYTHING with electronics in it, if you can.

I have two old 1500 gel balers with hydraulic tie and used them a LOT. That was 1980 technology . Nothing like a nice NEW baler But it is fun to play with that old stuff.
Sometimes I think Austin would rather just have the junk. Lol. He seems to enjoy the challenge of fixing it. But when he really wants to get something done I’m sure he would appreciate a new one. For now, he just has to work with what he’s got.
Dont make the bales to tight, is not worth it, you are gonna make the baler give up on chains and bearings, make it a at 100-120 bars, I don't know in what it measure to you, but when you push it that hard is gonna break, trust me :), greetings from a guy in romania, who learned by himself to bale :)
I bought a 1470 gehl baler at auction for 650. Makes a real nice bale. It was missing bale monitor. I have a harbor freight remote control winch on my tractor so I plugged baler tie wiring harness into winch harness and use the remote control to activate the twine tie
That sounds like a steal for your baler! My baler doesn’t have a monitor. It just has a string switch that hooks to my battery but my tractor already had a stinger built into it. I changed the adapter and it works great!
We got an 1860 and it only cost us 500.00 but we had to build our own electrical box, we’ve had almost no problems. These balers work great for the price that’s for sure!
That’s awesome! Seems to me like a lot of older equipment can out perform and last longer than the newer stuff. You just have to be willing to give them a little tlc.

I had a1450 back in the 90s,im sure mine only did a 45 inch wide bale. it made a good bale ,you have to watch it in a big crop of hay the tall crop will catch the twin and feed it in as your baling, had that happen a couple of times.
I know all about that. That’s happed to me at least 4 times already 😂. At least it’s on the edge of the bale where I can pull it out.
Very good video I'd say it was a good investment after it makes 6 bale's it woud perty much pay for itself in Many places.. after you get the bug's worked out she will be a fine machine and pay for itself 6 times over .. also I don't know if your doing it or not but lube up to chains with wd-40 or a similar product they will last a tad longer.. also look for a cheap used dump rake and a small square bailer for future equipment as you can run the round bailer pick up your bale's then run dump rake and hook up square bailer that Way no waste or no discoloration in Future hay crops form old dried grass if you get more than one cutting a year ..
That’s a good idea. I need to look into a dump rake. For good hay like this I could easily get $80 a bale here in Arkansas, but this year I’m probably going to have to keep all of this for our horses to winter on. I have several more fields that my neighbors have asked me to cut that I should be able to sell and get my money back pretty quick that way. Their hay is a little more weedy and probably more for cows. It’s mixed grass but I should still get $50-$60 a bale on most of that. I just uploaded a video of me cutting one of those fields. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Companies used to take pride in their work. Stuff was made to last.
Considering how many bales you rolled and how much you had to work on it I think the jury is still out on it being a good deal. But you need to leave the field much cleaner if you don't want trouble next spring when you cut with a sickle mower. Upgrade to a disc mower this winter,you will be glad you did. Good luck! The reason the baler was such a good deal is because it was not even a mile down the road. It came with a mountain of new parts including a new set of belts, pickup teeth, and bearings. The tires and pickup teeth are in great shape and will last a long time. I have a disc mower but the reason I switched to the hay bine is because it’s so much easier to attach. I would use the disc mower more if I had another tractor and didn’t have to switch implements so often. Thanks for watching!
After you put on new sprockets and chains tell me how mutch you have in baler or keep splicing chain and breaking chain. I know I do it everyday you have to debate new parts or old. Good video keep trying you will get it baled. God bless
So it was $600 for the baler , $75 for the rebuild on the cylinder, about $20 in chain links (we’ve gone through 7). It came with multiple new parts including all new belts, pick-up teeth and rollers. Thank you for watching!
We had Gehl 1450 on the farm must be 30 years AGO used it on Massey Ferguson 275 to run it made real good high Density bale. you maybe get 300/400 pounds more then soft core Baler always made go bales always wanted Gehl 1470 ours had just hydraulic arm cut off run the string we paid 5500 used for are Gehl 1450
They do make great bales! I still have to figure out the adjustments because it seems like the bales are too tight. It’s such a tight bale that I have trouble stabbing it with my spear. But I would rather have it too tight than too loose.

I stopped watching when I saw he was wearing crocks on his feet. Call me old fashioned but if you are going to farm, you're going to need your feet.
I see your point, but it’s pretty sad when you judge a kid for the kind of shoes he wears. FYI…Austin used to wear boots everywhere…I mean EVERYWHERE. As he grew, his foot got so wide that even wide shoes aren’t wide enough. Boots even worn for a few hours hurt his feet so much he has to quit working. I would rather have a hard working kid wearing crocs any day over a lazy kid wearing boots. To each his own.

you really need a tractor that has independent pto, so you are not stopping the pto to wrap, i always back up a few feet while that baler is wrapping, then when i dump the bale ,i can take off in a clean row, but that wont work with that massy, since the pto is disengaged when you push down the clutch, no reason to stop the baler,when it is wrapping or wrapped. just my opinon
Yes that would be nice. I have a David Brown 880 that is a independent pto but it needs a transmission. After I fix it, it will be my main tractor.
You tractor has a 2 stage clutch!!!.....partially down stops tractor, and lets you shift gears....all the way down stops pto..... and stops tractor.....I realize you are young and Learning and i like seeing this old equipment workin...I run mostly old equipment too.... But, learn to use the clutch....both stagesof it......second, use the hand throttle and leave the foot throttle to road travel and just moving from place to place on the farm...or loader work...the sudden rpms up and down.... and not using constant rpm's is wreaking havoc on the equipment and most likely contributed to some of the failures in this video......and lastly.....wear you some protection....not safety sallying here, and not telling you what to do....just have experience from not doing it myself......wear some leather boots/shoes prefer steel toe, safety glasses, gloves and hearing protection will go a long way in the future..... as you get older, you will appreciate taking these seemingly silly safety steps now... and one more thing.....Put an inline fuse in the 12volt power supply to baler....LOL trying to get the tractor unhooked from a burning baler is no fun.......Enjoyed your video very much and hope to see you making hay again this year.... @@RockWellAcresFarm2023

Sorry to you but the hay mower and baler both belong at a junk yard.
I guess beauty, or value, is in the eye of the beholder. My son absolutely loves making old things work, or at least attempting to. It brings him so much joy! He also learns a lot of life lessons, which means these old, what some would call “worthless” mowers and balers, still have a lot of worth in them.
I am so proud of this young man for using his talents and learning as he goes. Can't learn that with brand new equipment. I choose to encourage the youth in their attempts at learning and accomplishing difficult tasks. Good job, Austin!
