    Years ago, I "inherited" an 18 year old Tennessee Walker mare that had a history of laminitis and a severe case of thrush. Her heel bulbs were mush and her frogs were nonexistent. After treating with a topical penicillin poultice for a few weeks, and a daily vinegar soak, her heel bulbs and frog stiffened right up. I kept her barefoot and trimmed her regularly for about a year. I'm no farrier, so I took her to a qualified farrier for shoes. She ended up being one of my best trail riding horses. I'm impressed with your precision mule mechanic work on that front left. Thumbs up!

    Do horses tend to be passive when having their hoofs reshod or do they have to be trained? I've had dogs that hate to have their feet touched (for trimming their nails) while others apparently could care less. I would think a fidgety horse could be dangerous.

    Currently we are having a serious drought in my country. Where it usually rains once a week or at least once every other week during the summer we have now gotten rain only twice in two months. My question is if you recommend soaking the feet in water for about 30min before knowing the farrier is coming? Some farriers here have said that it helps immensely when the feet are so dry and hard. Is it true?

    • @garyhuston

    Hi Gary. I don't know nothing about shoeing horses. And i've watched you on numerous occasions. but still can't figure out the reason why you make corrections on the shoe. Would it be too much to ask for maybe a commentary while your doing the work. Or would that knock you off your concentration. the patience of the horse amazes me. But i dare say that comes down to the farrier. great clip.

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Před 6 lety

      It’s very simple, all feet are different, so the basic shape that a shoe comes in needs to be refined to the foot shape. Like pulling a piece of string around the lip of a mug. Start at the toe and work to the heel until it fit all round.

    • @eddylonergan142
      @eddylonergan142 Před 6 lety

      Well I admire your talent and Craft, You make it look simple,that's also an art. I just couldn't get my head round them fine adjustments,back and forth. I thought with the first burn,done job nail it on.Good health to you and yours.

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Před 6 lety +1

      There is only a few millimetres around the edge of a foot that can be nailed to without causing injury. The shoe must fit perfectly so it can be nailed. I guess if you didn’t know that it would seem odd my repeated fitting.

    How many do you shoe in an average week and how in the world do you keep your back from giving out?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Před 6 lety +1

      Not many these days, when I was an apprentice between two of us we would do anything upto fifty a week on a heavy week. Now I limit it to four a day. The back is dodgy but manageable with a few pain killers!

  • @tropifiori
    @tropifiori Před 6 lety

    How important are the clips if the shoe gets nailed in so thoroughly?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Před 6 lety

      Pretty important, they hold the shoe in place so the nails don’t get torn out when the horse is twisting and turning or taking off at speed. One on the front as it’s basically the steering end and two at the back because it’s the power source.

    Hey Gary! I really enjoy the videos, but why the silence? haha. It would be awesome if you could explain what you are doing and why. The way you trim and shoe a horse is very similar to the way I was taught with very few differences. One of the main differences is that we cold forge unless pulling clips or something of that nature. Keep up the good work and again, great videos!

      Blimington Bear I'd imagine it feels like getting a manicure or pedicure for the horse. Whizz looks as though she is content to stand there. You don't see or hear Whizz stomping a hoof or looking tense while Gary is trimming and reshoeing her. If she felt uncomfortable or in pain in any way, she would try to move away or try to free her hoof as it's being handled.
