Seeing that everything is done by hand was a great learning experience, and I thought it was wonderful even from a Japanese perspective.
Thank you!

What are the Japanese equilivent methods?
Excellent work! I am a 65 year old woman. And I have done some things with hand saws. Learning from my dad. Also save certain wood pieces for projects later. And I can't tell you how many at the moment. But I'm getting better organized at setting things aside. I love what you do. I'll be watching. I can't watch the whole video tonight. But I'm loving and enjoying all of it.
Thank you!
Welcome back Buddy Bud. I've missed you a lot. Still amazed at how you can see inside an old dead log. A lot of woodworkers work very hard at sanding away their tool marks but even your tool marks are beautiful. I hope you have some more content coming up.
Thanks!
Thank you😊
It's a bowl...
I just brought up this video & you caught my eye immediately. You bring back memories of when my father used these old hand tools. I was so intrigued by them & my father’s talent for their uses, he promised me he would leave them to me. That was 62 years ago. When my mother passed all his tools were missing. I have only a few tools but not the gouge chisels. I love your work & the memories you brought me. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
Thank you very much for the comment!
Beautiful piece of art. It is so soothing to see a craftsman and artist at work. The use of only hand tools makes it even more enjoyable. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
It would be a dream come true to work side by side with you for 1 month and just learn! Beautiful work!
Thank you!
so why would you not meet the gent and work with him at least for 1 day?
@@ChopWithChris
I would expect that if he chose to spend a day with this gent, he wouldn’t announce it in the comment section. He would reach out by DM or some other way. He has 200k subscribers so if he offers a day to one he will get 1000’s of requests. If it happens, it will be between the two of them.
Bạn là người siêng năng và quyết tâm … bạn làm ra thành phẩm rất đẹp . Thank bạn đã chia sẻ video hay nhé. Chúc bạn vui khỏe 👍
👍🏻😄
So relaxing when you get to the carving to the finish. Thanks for the inspiration 👍🏼
You are most welcome!
Mate, you may not have the best carving technique but the effort you went to with that 3 dimensional decoration was inspiring, and the result was awesome! Wonderful stuff ,please keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍
Да у него отличный инструмент. Думаю , любой мастер позавидует..
Brilliant!
Do not apologize for the carving, final result was outstanding. 👋👋👋
Thank you very much!
The bit right in the middle when the clamp fell off and the bleeps left me giggling at 4 am. Thank you
Glad I could help!
Omg, I have so many comments on this one!
It's gorgeous, beautiful and amazing 😍😍😍
Love watching you use the spokeshave - it's just so satisfying!
I just started carving and therefore I started to watch woodworking and carving videos - the only thing I can think of (as a beginner with carving as my focus) is that carvers almost never use straight chisels, cause if you want a flat surface they will leave marks on the edges - you don't have that problem (probably because you are used to working with straight chisels)... So I wouldn't be embarrassed about your carvings, cause it's working - and this one in particular is simply wonderful!
Thanks for watching and the comment!

Thanks for that brother. In a world full of crap, your labour, respect for tools and timber and your art are things of beauty.
You made my day! Thank you for your comment!
My husband and I just finished watching your video. He's a woodturner who does excellent work. We both enjoyed your quality and excellence of workmanship. We were impressed and look forward to the next one you do. The bowl is just beautiful.
Thank you so much!!!
First time watcher, very nice effort 👍👍. Made me flash back tol a better time and my family's history. In the late 40s' after the war, my Grandfather, my Father(before I was born) and his 3 brothers, purchased 40-45 acre wood lot with a spring and a small sand pit near Galway Lake in upstate NY, then went about building the family camp which eventually became Gram and Gramps year around home. And, with the help of a few neighbors and friends dragged a '50 Buick frame and engine up to the sand pit converting it into a saw, using the lumber from trees on the lot for the house and garage/ workshop(the look of your shop and tools reminded me of Gramps workshop). None were artists like you, but did everything by hand, even a lot of the tool making.(No "Home Cheapo's" back then😀) The "camp" still stands today so I guess they did okay, and I'm guessing it will stand through a quite a few more Northeast winters since all the rough cut lumber is well oversized. They never put in central heat, and my Grandmother always cooked on a wood stove(and usually had holiday meals for 10-15). She was a 5', 95lb Canuck born in the blizzard of 1888 telling us grandkids stories of making bathtub gin and selling pints for a nickel at lumber camp dances. She lived until 98 years old, healthy until the onset of Alzheimer's the last couple years of her life. Keep up the great work and God Bless.
Wow! Thanks for sharing the amazing experiences of your family!!!
Thanks for sharing your grams an granpaps story, the Good old DAYS!!!
O queeeeee? 🤔
Missed your videos! Your persistence in loyalty to hand tools is unmatchable! Glad to see you back@
Thanks!
Nothing wrong with your carving skills, you made a beautiful, natural looking wood piece out of that old tree. I'm impressed.
Thank you very much!
Great craftsmanship, sir. Rare to find anyone who has this level of manual woodcraft skills.
Thank you!
Ditto to all the comments below about your skill, your use of tools, etc. Equally as interesting to me is your vise adaptations you've made for outdoor and indoor purposes. I love a well designed tool that has a specific purpose and to see the way you change your table/bench/blocks to adapt to the need at hand is fantastic.
Thank!!
Great display of a variety of hand tools and how to use them. In my country a trough like this would be used for storing flour, proofing dough and carrying the baby around. I really enjoyed it, thanks!
You are most welcome.
The BIGGEST RESPECT to you and to your craft!!!
Thank you !! 💪
It looks like the beginning of an Egyptian boat. Beautiful walnut wood, grains very small.
Thanks!
Absolutely Astonishing! Pure Artisan Hand Craftsmanship! I have truly enjoyed watching Chris. So much better than watching Paint Dry. I’ve been down for 3 weeks with Covid-19. This is Great Medicine! Thanks

Hello there my friend, I've been anticipating a new video by you and let me say,I'm so glad it's here. I didn't think the bleeps would come until near the end but, oh well. So glad you enjoyed it!
Love this project. Watching until the end. New sub from Mr. Chickadee’s channel. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Welcome! Josh is great!
I'm a new subscriber I've watched a few of your uploads in the past ... This one set the hook very meticulous and I like how you included the book referencing. I took that as we all are still learning and knowledge is key anyway awesome job I have to say you remind me of my greatest mentor Roy Underhill . And that's about the rarest complement I give. Keep up the good work sir and looking forward to seeing your next upload!
Thank you. I am honored. I was lucky enough to meet Roy. His books helped inspire me.
@@ChopWithChris That's awesome you met Roy...he inspires so many I told him once ,after nearly decapitating himself on an antediluvian lathe ,your a national treasure and should be more careful. I can see from your work that you agree whole heartedly in the belief of how do I say almost bond or somehow get closer with the wood ? Roy teaches that we kind of put something of ourselves into the things we create from wood and there's a part of that missing when we utilize tools that have their own power source I probably sound like a screwball but I really believe that and masters like Mr Underhill and yourself keep that connection alive and I hopefully follow in your footsteps . The day I wake up and cannot learn something from teachers like Roy or yourself will be a sad day indeed on account I will obviously have become senile. I'm looking forward to your next upload and keep an eye out for Roy's next project he's not ready for retirement just yet!
This is the first I've seen your channel, and I am gobsmacked! Simply amazing!
Thank you and welcome to my channel! I hope you enjoy my other videos.

Was just thinking about you actually. I had a cherry tree come down and I'm carving a bowl out of it because it's not good for much else, I was wondering what my favorite fellow found wood hand tool maniac was up to. Glad you haven't quit.

Nice work. I agree with your decision to use the white inlay over the other one.
Thanks 👍
I enjoyed every chop and chip to make your fabulous bowl..and your awesome tools blew me away thanks so much for sharing
You are most welcome!
Nice Job! I particularly love that you were able to repurpose a beautiful piece of walnut that would have gone to waste otherwise. Thanks!
Thank you very much!
CHRIS, I AM SO ENJOYING THIS VID.!! THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS THAT THERE IS NO OBNOXIOUS MUSIC TO ANOY AND DISTRACT ME !!!😀 KEEP GOING , MUCH LOVE , PATRICIA❣🇺🇸 p.s. the bowl came out like a museum piece!!!! P.s., p.s. Your shop is so immaculate!!!🙏🇺🇸
Thanks so much!!!
Say what of an artist of this category.? it's just fantastic, the tools and everything you need to do this job, congratulations friend you are special.
Thank you!
Wonderful! I'm interested in getting into bowl carving and I hope my projects end up looking half as good as this! 🙌 I enjoy this rougher look as opposed to the absolutely perfectly smooth finish of others. Tool marks give character and tell a story.
Thanks! I agree - hand carved and imperfect look better.
I'm Soo impressed. I've didn't realize how much skill and work, time that toke. You're right electricity is overrated.!!! Keep up the great work. I'll be watching.
Thank you!!
Beautiful and useful. The perfect combination. Congratulations. 👏🏽

It looked like a perfectly lovely trail bench to me. And now it's a glorious bowl! What will you use the other 3 pieces for?
That too!
Still blueish when you first cut it. Always amazed sapwood becomes heartwood, yet the heartwood is totally different. So many techniques & use of tools here I never thought of.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Nice work. A few of your tools seemed to be a bit dull, but it didn't show in the end result.
I make English style longbows as a hobby and almost all the work is done with draw knife, spokeshave and scrapers.

You worked very hard for this bowl and it’s worth it. It’s beautiful. 😊
Thank you so much 😊
I know one thing for sure, from personal experience doing both: those are some sharp tools there because as a woodworker and a cook I can tell you walnut is hard as steel and those tools are sharp as knives. Great work and great tool. What more can one ask for…except great food to go into that great piece of work? 😉
Thank you! The bowl is on the dining room table so many great meals and discussions to be had around the bowl.
People don't even want to mess with Walnut.
