    Can I ask why are we shoeing horses?Mustangs live without shoes.
    Secondly, I watched another shoeing video of yours and you didn’t work with the oven. Can I ask the difference between them and what’s heating for?
    Thank you.

    • @Ben_the_farrier
      @Ben_the_farrier Před 6 lety

      all horses have different feet... I have 6 and 2 need shoes. also depends on what you do with your horses. If your a high level rider and horse combo your probably going to use shoes or boots. Dont know about the oven am interested myself. In new zealand we dont even use the ovens

    • @kirkboswell2575
      @kirkboswell2575 Před 4 lety

      Isimsizde olur - This question comes up periodically - namely "why shoe at all? Mustangs don't wear them." This question is sometimes from very interested people, but also is a favorite of animal lovers (who usually know just enough about animals to cause them harm).
      Shoes are sometimes used for corrective purposes. Too much toe weight, walking pidgeon toed or pidgeon heeled, worn or low heels, or injured ankles, etc, etc, etc. Shoeing can correct these issues.
      Shoes are also used when heavy work loads are involved. Draft horses need shoes in most cases. No, they don't always use them in Europe, but those draft animals usually have hoof problems. So, prevention of hoof problems is another reason. Type of terrain is yet another factor. Frequently traveling on rocky ground requires shoes. Slick ground or ice is another. When I was a kid, we had ice shoes for our horses. Kept them from falling and getting injured during ice storms. And as for those mustangs, they do get injured and when that happens and they can't keep up with the herd, ,,,,, well, let's just say that nature doesn't waste anything.
      Finally, while many people have forgotten, work oxen were also shod - two shoes per foot. The reason you don't hear about it anymore is because oxen aren't used as work animals anymore.
      So, reasons are many for shoeing. There's also reasons for leaving horses "barefoot", but even then regular trimming is still required if you want the animal to stay healthy and comfortable.

      Can be a sign of tight hamstrings. Start by slowly stretching the hind hoof towards the knee of the foot in front of it. Takes a while but stops the horse being so tight and sensitive when you pick up its feet

    Hi Gary, the first video of yours I saw was shoeing Whizz, and it was pure coincidence that I came across your channel and I realised that it was a pony from the school pony club which I’m part of! It’s so nice to see the job being done properly and I find it fascinating too especially since they are ponies which I ride regularly! (I ride Mickey the most)
    I have 2 questions:
    Is it harder to shoe a horse with arthritic legs?
    What’s roulette like to shoe with her big personality and long feathers- do you have to hold them out the way?
    Thanks again!

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Před 6 lety +2

      Rebekah, yes, it is harder to shoe one with arthritic legs, Mickey has to have a pain killer before I shoe him so he can stand on one leg.
      Roulette is the only horse I shoe at the moment that I have to shoe cold, she freaks if I get anywhere near her with a hot shoe! Yes, her feathers need holding out of the way so I can see to finish her off.

      The video is from last year where we had a very very long hot summer, the longest in my lifetime (im 37). I would assume this is just due to that. If you check the floor around it looks baked hard. The usual places where moisture could affect the hoof, low lying points in the field for example will also be totally bone dry. I thought the same as you until i saw the date when the video was produced.

    Another Fine job. Looks like the hooves finally hardened up over there. I'm not sure if I am brave enough to wear shorts at work or on camera. I got skinny chicken legs. Gary do you pass the cost of copper nails to the owners or just except it as part of the evolution of the technology of the job?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, they have gone from soggy sponges to rock hard bricks in about two weeks! It's causing all sorts of cracking! I didn't think about the camera when i put my shorts on, but i'm glad i did as it's pretty warm and quite humid. At 1p extra cost per nail I just swallow the cost, although the company selling them is trying to get farriers to add £3 per set! That's just a rip off...

    • @Shadeskast
      @Shadeskast Před 6 lety

      I just eat the cost too. I really don’t use that many when the hot summer gets here. I not a big fan how they clinch. I tend to use a gauge tool. Maggie Clavere - No, it's not just English horses. Your question made me grin, because I've also heard "is it only American horses that are shod?" And variations on that same theme.
      Horses, shetlands, mules, donkeys, cows, etc. can be and are shod. It all depends upon 1. The animal 2. The workload 3. The terrain being traversed 4. Conformation issues 5. Medical issues and etc. In other words, reasons are many and varied, but generally universal.
