My quick thoughts on using the Nikon Z 24-70mm F4, a lens bundled in many full frame Z system camera kits. I've been using it on my Nikon Z5 and have been blown away by the performance. There's one thing that really bothers me, though...

I love mine. I saw a comparison by Ricci between this one and the more expensive 2.8 version and they are so close that I did not buy the 2.8
Thanks for your review. Nikon makes a Z 24-120mm F4, however, they have never made a 24-105mm for its past FX or Z cameras. I have the FX version, and the Z version is supposed to be stellar quality but is longer and heavier than this z 24-70mm F4. The appeal of the Z 24-70mm F4 is its compact size and light weight compared to longer zoom lenses. (however there is the extremely compact Z 24-50mm kit lens.) Lots of stores in my area have the Z 24-70mm F4 at half price in the used version, so $500 used for this lens seems a good value.

The Nikkor 24-120 F/4 (constant) is released and it is an S Line lens. Promises to be a killer - it is also apparently very good for video as well as stills as it apparently does not focus breathe much (if at all - don't know).
Retail it is only $100 more than the 24-70 F/4 S so that lens really doesn't make sense anymore from a retail stand point (not that it ever did - since it is $400 cheaper in a kit).
I have the 24-70 2.8 S - it is an incredible lens besting the 24-70 f/4 in IQ (but not by much - they are very close), and the 2.8 version is definitely bigger and heavier not to mention more than double the price - I am getting the 24-120 F/4 S as a travel walk around lens - I think the 24-120 provides all the focal range that you need for 95% of photography - and I use 20mm, 15mm and 200mm a lot in landscape and portraiture - but for travel and walk around 24-120 covers most everything :)
I couldn't have said it better myself! The 24-120 F/4 S seems like a no-brainer for all who can afford it. Supremely versatile focal range - I am looking forward to all reviews but it's looking like a winner like every S line lens so far.
Should be noted that the 24-70 f/4 can be had (used) for sometimes as low as $450 (or less). And we'll see even more of them on the used market as folks switch over to the 24-120. My dream kit would probably be something like the 20 1.8 S + 24-120 + 100-400
The programmable ring is too easy to move around. I had it set to ISO and during a shooting everything went wrong, with pics totally overexposed. I had accidently touched the ring to ISO 25.000 something. Now I have it set to off and adjust ISO with the front wheel only.
I had the same problem with my Z 70-200 f2.8 S, but that was adjusted when I had it repaired after an accident. On that lens it's very useful to have programmed to ISO, controlling it with my thumb and with a nice smooth ring with some mechanical resistens.
Thank you for sharing, Patrick. ISO 25,000... I can only imagine your frustration. I choose to disable these rings for fear of exactly that scenario, but sounds like it's implemented nicely on the f/2.8 S! Otherwise these rings seem like yet another possible point of failure...
Someone asked: "Who ever called it a kit lens?" Nikon does. They refer to it specifically as a "kit lens" when sold with the Z7. I've never been hung up on the term "kit lens" and I've had several Nikon kit lenses that were excellent lenses. I got the Z 24-70 f4 recently. I'm very impressed. Since it is a kit lens according to Nikon maybe we shouldn't be afraid of calling it one and just acknowledge that it elevates the concept of kit lenses. 🙂
Thanks for watching! Just my attempt at a more provocative video title than usual :) I think for many, the term "kit lens" still evokes memories of average 18-55mm optics from the early DSLR era... I'm glad those days are behind us!
i got this lens for $350 factory refurb from nikon and the locking ring does not bother me because i also shoot the nikon1 v2 and they have similar lens locking mechanism so im kind of used to it

I am finally looking at upgrading to a mirrorless from a DSLR and I will be switching to the ZF from canon so all my lenses are going. I have the choice to go for the 40mm or the 24-70mm when I buy the camera and I'm not sure what to go for, i have shot a lot of 50mm with the majority of vintage cameras coming equipped with that and think a slightly wider lens would be fun, however as it will be my only lens for a while the 24-70 will naturally give me more flexibility, whatever I pick though must stand up to the rest of the lenses for the z mount because I don't want to sell it off and replace it down the line but keep it as part of my line up. I can also go for the body only option and buy a separate lens. what would you recommend in this case? I shoot most of my shots between 35 and 85mm with the majority probably being in the 50-70mm range
Congrats on making the jump to mirrorless - I'm sure the ZF will have made the wait worth it. The 24-120mm F4 has come out and has been VERY well reviewed. If you don't mind the price, weight, and size... I'd just go straight to the 24-120mm. But there's something to be said for the light, compact, and cheap 24-70mm that balances well with mirrorless bodies. It's still an S class lens, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
@@lensvana I will check that out! I have an old 18-135 from canon that is a workhorse at events, especially with young children, so 24-120 sounds like it would be similar, I’ll have to compare the price and weight of each and see how they stack up. Thanks for the help!
thanks for review! i have the 14 24 S lens , one of the more expensive, and it it made drom Thailand. The origin of manufacture I think is no longer important.
Very true, Gonzalo! Nikon has been manufacturing high-quality products at the Thai factory for a long time.
Is it good for lowlight indoors?
For occasional use? Sure, f/4 and crank up the ISO! For professional/frequent use, without external flash/lighting I prefer f/2 or faster
@@lensvana I am partial to f2.8 and faster lenses and agree that they can be better at low light shooting but in terms of image quality that is only really true if you are willing to accept the shallow depth of field at f2 or f1.8. That can be razor thin and not suitable to many compositions in my experience. As far as autof ocus in low light, sure, that large aperture is a big help.

It's huge and heavy!
The popular zoom alternatives (24-120, 24-200) are even larger and heavier! Perhaps the little 40mm F2 prime offers the best balance
