The problem with recording guitars is most people have no idea how to use a parametric EQ. That, more than anything else, it the secret to an outstanding guitar tone.

When I got a Boss Katana and opened the software interface, I was put off at first at how many EQ stages there were because I never used EQ besides the basic 3/4-band panel EQ on amps. After finding out how powerful parametric EQ is for tone shaping, it makes perfect sense to have as many EQ options as possible.

Added bass traps in our rehearsal space and it made a big difference. Now we kick the drummer out there, mic everything up and we all run our guitars into torpedo captors and track practice every week with headphones.
Gives clarity at practice and gives me plenty of material to practice mixing.

sounds like excellent set up man - if u can give any insight - how do i go from a couple of Amps to using headphones for the two guitars and bass while practicing ? any helpful hints or directions to links for research? thanks

    • @ShinobiSr1
      @ShinobiSr1 Před 4 měsíci +1

The way I have it set up is with an interface that gives me 16 inputs. So I mic the kit and isolate the drum room.
In the control room we do the guitars, bass and vocals. We bought a couple of torpedo captor x's for the guitars and the bass goes into a bass driver di.
I run that shit into reaper like I would a standard recording session and give everyone headphones so the only loud thing would be the drums and vocals, both of which are isolated into the two rooms. Works well so far.
Built it out of a garage which I split into two rooms with a window. Works for me!

@@ShinobiSr1 I don't want to speak for your drummer, but as a drummer being stuck in a different room from the rest of the band SUCKS hard, if it's feasible I would suggest isolating the cabs and bringing the drummer back in the room, feeding off the other band members energy or impromptu changes to arrangement are severely hampered by having the separation.

I know that this video isn't really about this, but I just want to thank you for showcasing how little guitar pickups actually have to do with tone. Obviousl,y the output and the type of pickup still matters a bit, but I feel like now when I'm looking at guitars to purchase, I'm a lot less focused on how the guitar will "sound" and more focused on other specs and looks (beautiful instruments make me want to play!). I don't need to pointlessly watch CZcams videos comparing tones from guitar to guitar, I can just focus on the build quality of the instrument and whether it meets my needs and other aspects.
    You rock!

Those old Crates rule! The GX130C is a very close cousin of the Ampeg VH140C that was used on lots of 90s death metal and hardcore albums, and the Crate version was even used on Cannibal Corpse's "The Bleeding" album. I would think the GX65 would be the same pre-amp section, but I'm not entirely sure. Either way, definitely not to be slept on when paired with a good speaker!
EDIT: Since you're looking for suggestions, the Peavey Bandit! I own two and absolutely love them. A few of the older models came with you're absolute favourite speaker (the Sheffield
😜) and others came with either a Scorpion or Blue Marvel. I did a speaker swap on both of mine with an Eminence Swamp Thang and they're absolute monsters now!

A little comment here about pickups. When people are addressing this thing with pickups you often respond something like "We play metal you idiots." And you do have a very valid point there. For most metal music pickups does not make much of a difference, and that is what matters most in your context.
However, I don't think those comments are dumb, and from an educational standpoint, I think it would be a good thing to point it out clearly to avoid misunderstandings, and also because many of these commenters will probably not even see your response to their comments since they come in another video. And that would possibly have the unfortunate effect that they don't think you know what you're talking about, which reduces views, which in turn reduces valuable knowledge sharing.
Furthermore, sure 99% of the guitars in metal is heavily distorted, but those 1% cleans are still important and should be addressed.
Greetings from the land of In Flames and FU Glenn!

Hey, It's great seeing my question about good cabs and cheap amps being read! What I have done in the past is to add a speaker out off of the speaker itself. If you use a stereo 1/4 jack you can make it so it cuts the power to the internal speaker when you plug in an extension cabinet. I've done this with my old Line 6 Spider 15, a 40 watt Vox Valvetronix and a 15 watt crate. In every case it improves the sound. With cheap amps the part most skimped on is the speaker.

About the education: there really is no substitute for GOOD education. Honestly, the very best education you can get is often free. Or at least, you don't have to pay money, just put in the effort and listen! Apprenticeships in places that actually know what they do, and really want to teach you is often better than any college. And yes, I went to uni and got my engineering degree. Don't regret is one bit! But in my weekend job as a repair tech, and my volunteer work as light / sound tech I learned a LOT more useful skills!
That's why I love shows like this; real life information that actually matters, and not just some theory. (Yes, you need theory too if you REALLY want to understand why...)

It's great what you were saying about bandmates being into different things - but the band then becoming something greater. In my band of 20 odd years (Rome Burns) we have a singer who is into weird folk stuff, a guitarist into post-rock and shoegaze, and i'm a metaller - but we all come together over a shared passion for the Gothic subgenre and somehow it works. when we were younger and practiced face to face every week, I would often get so frustrated with the stuff the other guitarist was doing, but when we got over the egos and concentrated on the song as a whole we managed to craft something unique and fun.

The crate test will be very interesting, I expect it to sound more than decent with greenbacks. I remem my first amp head was a shitty valvestate 8100 and a matching cab, it wasn't great by any means but after I swapped 2 of the shitty Celestion G12L's by EV12ls and the other 2 with g12M's, it sounded actually pretty decent (needed to be boosted, because not even EMGs would drive it enough, but still). The EV12L didn't have the horrendous price tag they have now though.
But if someone needs a cheap 100w amp head that would actually deliver some good stuff with decent speakers, the valvestate heads go for 200 to 250 bucks on reverb. Another great deal for tube purists are the Hughes and Kettner triamp mk1 (wich was horribly expensive back in the days) goes for 500-600 on reverb

Thinking something original will come out of the band I recently joined , 2 long time members 30+ songs 3 new members. Ages ranging from 53 to 22. Diffrent eras and current playlists. Drummer (22) Bassist (53) 2 Guitarists (51 & 26) and a vocalist (43).
Who we idolize are all miles apart (next galaxy for me the 53 year old Bassist who's main musical influence is Zappa lol). We learned a 35 minute set of their already recorded material in about 12 hours spread out over 5 or 6 Friday night Jams and did our first show with this revamped lineup. Now we're gonna start bouncing riffs and ideas jamming and see where it goes not biased to making it fit the established material as the fan base is small , local and probably flexible enough to grow with whatever we evolve into.

My question is this: you’ve talked about the reliable guitars you have in the studio for recording sessions, but do you have any basses around for the same purpose? With an overwhelming amount of options out there, it’d be great to hear about some tested and reliable bass guitars.

I still say the problem we face most of the time with these comments is the fact that "tone" has different meanings in different contexts.
For a recording engineer looking at the spectogram and moving sliders: Tone is almost entirely just frequency response. Which makes no sense when you think about it.
For everyone else, tone is the culmination of frequency response, dynamics/compression, grit and distortion character...
That pedal show, andertons, and a few other people have done the test where they put eq pedals in various parts of the chain to see if they could make different pedals and amps sound like other pedals and amps... And no. There's more going on in the tone than just the EQ.
And a good example of this would be to put BB King's amp through a vintage 30 instead of the T-75 his amp came with... Would it sound different? Yes. Would it sound like Metallica? No.
So let's look at what WOULD do it.
Hands? Somewhat... I mean trying to play unforgiven without a b bender sounds very different. Playing Thrill is Gone with palm mutes would sound totally different. But assuming you are actually playing the same song in the same tuning then no, not really. But you have to play metal if you want to sound metal.
Guitar/pickups? Not really. *maybe* if it was really high output ridiculous pickups with active controls... But at that point it's basically just putting a tubescreamer in your guitar. Low output pickups with a high output pedal will do the same thing.
Cab material? Jim Lill did that, made little difference. Make it out of styrofoam. Won't matter much.
    So what's left? The amplification.
If we had Mr King plug Lucille into a tubescreamer and 6505 that ran through his normal cab and chug palm mutes... would it sound metal? YES.
Now what if we kept King's whole clean rig and just added a metal pedal like a Metal Muff or a hm-2 in the signal... Would it sound metal? Yes, as long as he played metal.
Therefore we have our list. What makes a metal tone is this in order:
    1. What you play. Blues with distortion is still blues, same with country and pop. Country strumming will never chug if you don't mute it right. If you want to sound metal, you have to play metal.
    2. The pedals. If you play metal with the right pedal, you can sound good with just about any amp. In fact a lot of times I will skip an amp altogether and just DI the pedal into an IR loader. Sounds great. I can make a tweed do metal or a 6505 do country with the right pedals.
    3. Speakers and open/closed back cab. It can make a big difference in frequency response, but not much else. And when we look at the full mix, most engineers are cutting off the bottom 100hz and capping the top at around 5k anyway, so the differences between production speakers are actually quite small. And as we discussed, a speaker won't make a blues tone metal or a metal tone bluesy... The change in overall tone is quite small compared to something like adding a pedal.
And the rest doesn't matter. The recording gear is flat enough that even the cheapest junk on the market will get you a perfect recording at guitar loudness. The pickups and guitar don't matter after you add even a little bit of distortion. Fresh strings are good, but they won't make a big shift in tone either. The amp doesn't make much difference, with the right pedals any amp will sound good. Things like tubes and pickups had an effect on the output, but if you're using a pedal then you can adjust the output by turning a knob.

We're six people with totally different music tastes and in the material we're preparing for our second album, they start morphing into our own sound!
Not that our first album is bad- it's a solid effort! It's just that if one knows us personally, can tell who wrote each song, without even looking at the credits!
And, as it should be, no Autotune, No Quantizing! If we can't play it or sing it live, it's not getting in the album!
Samples though...yeah, we fd up the drums sound and had no other choice, but we're learning!

Keeping from rattling the drumset, less bass buildup, and you can tilt your amp up towards your ears allowing you to hear yourself better if playing with a one monitor mix, or no monitors, while keeping a lower stage volume and not bleeding in to the singers' mics so the audience can actually hear them!

I have the second generation trans tube one and they are essentially bandits in head form. I think they are incredible amps and it would make for a great video. Keep up the good work and your guitar playing is getting better and better with every video, good job!!!

Re the comment on loudness wars in rehearsal rooms: In Ear Monitor Systems. My gosh they made a difference. Separate mix for each band member. Oh, you want to melt your brain with your bass? Great, here you go, one first class ticket in the Tinnitus Express... meanwhile, the rest of us can choose our own mixes. Plus having a drummer with an e-kit. Such a difference. Not properly metal of course, but SO MUCH easier for practicing.

Wow that old Crate brings back memories! That was the official amplifier of the Wayne Hills High school Jazz Improv band in 1994. We used to love to hit the distortion button and play Metallica songs, it would drive the teacher crazy! They should have bought a Jazz Chorus 120 if they didn't want us to rock out!

Crates were so common in the 90s. One of the cheaper 212 combos. Most players didn't use the distortion, only pedals.

That distortion channel button was all we had! It was our magical button that switched between boring clean jazz mode to insane mode ..and this was long before the days of Line 6 insane...Insane is what we drove our poor jazz teacher with that button. @@LebD

My bassist is new to playing, he was asking me who plays modellers now, every big band he thought of, using em. They are just so much better. There's a reason why big bands are using them, the techs come so far.

I used to be a recording purist (practical effects, "analogue" as much as possible). But I simply didn't have the funds and gear to do that. So I had to dial back my EGO and accept that at my level (bedroom studio) the only way I can get anything done is embracing digital methods. Now I'm using amp sims that I thought were forbidden and I'm like 70% more efficient than I ever was. Be realistic with what you have and use whatever you can access at your level - is what I learnt.

Element Bass is honestly a really great plugin as a Bass Amp Sim. I use the Glenn Frickler "Three Stage" preset all the time and it just required like really minor tweaks (like lowering treble a little bit) and it's already great in the mix. There are some small bugs, like the "Solo" buttons sometimes don't track correctly, but the "Power" button right next to it (which basically acts as a bypass) can achieve the same thing. Overall I think Element Bass is pretty great and would recommend

Any way to get your tone is a valid way to get your tone. Period. Music is a creative process, there are no rules that you can't violate in the quest for making good music. It may turn out that violating those rule won't work very well, but what the hell, give it a shot!

while i'm here, here's a possible vid subject for you. emulating micing techniques. I came up before drum and amp/irs were of their modern quality (line6 pod was cutting edge lol). So i learned alot of mic/recording techniques that, honestly, have been kind of feel obsolete nowadays (unless you're a pretty successful act). I was listening to korn's follow the leader yesterday and was really taken in by the "roominess" in the drum-kit sound. Got me a bit nostalgic. It got me thinking back to the days when i was trying to get drum recordings with the classic 4-mic approach. then i started wondering how i would approach that sound (and others) with modern virtual instruments and stock plugins. I'm sure i could figure it out on my own over time (a sparse commodity), but i think that could be cool to explore as a video (unless you've done it and i missed it).

I guess that's the benefit of buying things in person. They also offered free adjustments if you for example changed the string gauge within a reasonabe amount of time.

I had a client insist on bringing his large Marshal stack. He set it up the way he wanted and then I had him run trough the sim and compare. The session ended with him admitting that all the effort to bring his stack was a waste of time and muscle. The sim gave him what he wanted and was much more versatile. But it all depends on the way you set them up. Either way can be better or worse if you don't do it right.

Hey Glenn, thanks for doing the hard work of testing a lot of variables that affect guitar tone! I have one guitar question and one bass question.
Guitar: I remember you replaced your green Harley Benton Amarok's stock pickups with Fishman Fluences, was it worth it?
Bass: You got plans to investigate variables that matter for bass tone? Since most of the good tone I've heard for metal keeps quite a bit of undistorted bottom end. Would pickup type and position matter if you already have a solid amp sim like Element?

Back in my teens I had the worst & cheapest stereo on earth. I went down to my local guitar shop and asked if they had any cheap PA speakers. They had some slightly used Celestion PA speakers that had been swapped for another customer. They charged me £25 for the pair. I knocked up cabs from ply and bits from Tandy (Radio shack). WoW, it was amazing the difference. It went from complete crap to pretty damned good. That's when I started to think... hmmm I wonder if I can do this with guitar amp speakers. Well Glenn, as you keep telling everyone, that is a definite YES! Love your channel too. Have a great trip too 😊

Great video Glenn. In 1986 I was a Senior in high school and our annual variety show was coming up so this goofy dude that wanted to sing a song in the show asked me
if I would play guitar for him so she could sing "New Girl Now" lmao. I was into VH Priest Maiden but I felt bad for him so I agreed. I learned the song in 8 minutes and he
actually did a great job singing it. My friends busted my balls for 6 months over it.

I'm probably older than TubeRocker, and have many tube amps. I can tell you without question that both sims and tube amps are completely valid. I can also tell you that sims are one FUCK of a lot less expensive than amps. Here's a little idea: maybe try a shitpile of sims to help find the amp you like best before thinking about committing up to $3K plus on one? I just picked up Mercuriall's EVH Stealth sim for well under $100 and it's crushing! As is ML Sound Lab's entire roster! Wanna go uber-cheapo? Try out Audio Assault's stuff - I've paid as little as ZERO dollars for some of their plugins! The world is your oyster. Thanks for all the great info and hard work, Glenn!!!

My favorite SS amp is the Fender London Reverb, from the early 80’s. Just a brutal gain stage, 5-band Eq on board, came in combo or head and cab. The one thing i always hated, were the speakers. You can often find the combos for 400.00 USD online, but the heads seem to be holy grail rare….
