About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
The problem with recording guitars is most people have no idea how to use a parametric EQ. That, more than anything else, it the secret to an outstanding guitar tone.
Why would I want a parachuting UK equalizer?
Y'know ive wanted one for years, after learning it was a huge part of EVH's and nunos tone.
More than anything?!? A parametric eq?!?
When I got a Boss Katana and opened the software interface, I was put off at first at how many EQ stages there were because I never used EQ besides the basic 3/4-band panel EQ on amps. After finding out how powerful parametric EQ is for tone shaping, it makes perfect sense to have as many EQ options as possible.
@@doknoxkids in Africa are hungry, but I also don't have a parametric EQ
Glenn's calmly sarcasm... hits even harder than his screaming... i like that even more 😂
Added bass traps in our rehearsal space and it made a big difference. Now we kick the drummer out there, mic everything up and we all run our guitars into torpedo captors and track practice every week with headphones.
Gives clarity at practice and gives me plenty of material to practice mixing.
sounds like excellent set up man - if u can give any insight - how do i go from a couple of Amps to using headphones for the two guitars and bass while practicing ? any helpful hints or directions to links for research? thanks
The way I have it set up is with an interface that gives me 16 inputs. So I mic the kit and isolate the drum room.
In the control room we do the guitars, bass and vocals. We bought a couple of torpedo captor x's for the guitars and the bass goes into a bass driver di.
I run that shit into reaper like I would a standard recording session and give everyone headphones so the only loud thing would be the drums and vocals, both of which are isolated into the two rooms. Works well so far.
Built it out of a garage which I split into two rooms with a window. Works for me!
@@ShinobiSr1 I don't want to speak for your drummer, but as a drummer being stuck in a different room from the rest of the band SUCKS hard, if it's feasible I would suggest isolating the cabs and bringing the drummer back in the room, feeding off the other band members energy or impromptu changes to arrangement are severely hampered by having the separation.
I know that this video isn't really about this, but I just want to thank you for showcasing how little guitar pickups actually have to do with tone. Obviousl,y the output and the type of pickup still matters a bit, but I feel like now when I'm looking at guitars to purchase, I'm a lot less focused on how the guitar will "sound" and more focused on other specs and looks (beautiful instruments make me want to play!). I don't need to pointlessly watch CZcams videos comparing tones from guitar to guitar, I can just focus on the build quality of the instrument and whether it meets my needs and other aspects.
You rock!
Hey Glenn! Thank you for Extinction Level Event! Helped me to get my stuff to where I want it wayyyy quicker! Cheers for that man! Take care!
Glennnn, I thought you knew our entertainment was more important then your vacations!!😂 Love the shows, appreciate the extra effort it takes.
"more important than..." with an A
@@eamonahern7495 I never get that one correct😂
Loving the new tweaks, thank you for the ep and hope you’re enjoying your vacation!!
Off topic, but the quality and editing of your videos in the past couple of months has really improved. I really enjoyed the new style of editing, even if they’re minor touches here and there. It’s awesome all these years in to allow growth and allow new ideas to be utilized to make your content even better.
Been subbed for a few years and yes, your playing has definitely gotten better. Your lead runs flow alot better. I can't talk shit about a fellow player because we all have places where we can get better at the craft. Good stuff Gleen. Cheers from Upstate NY.
Correct!
You've inspired me to work on my picking I want to pick like you do on that Priest and those other licks you play where you really dig in with that pick
Extremely informative Video !! Thanks for putting in the work to make this Video and share it with all of us . I hope you're doing well Glenn . 🎸
hey man, your. channel has always been loaded with great Information. helping those on a budget to find great gear without busting the bank and you older videos on how to get sounds is and are awesome. people including myself might not agree with everything but thats ok. in the end I always say use whatever you want to do your thing. thanks and cheers from saint Augustine fl.!
Hey, It's great seeing my question about good cabs and cheap amps being read! What I have done in the past is to add a speaker out off of the speaker itself. If you use a stereo 1/4 jack you can make it so it cuts the power to the internal speaker when you plug in an extension cabinet. I've done this with my old Line 6 Spider 15, a 40 watt Vox Valvetronix and a 15 watt crate. In every case it improves the sound. With cheap amps the part most skimped on is the speaker.
Definitely would love to see the crate demo! And yes lots of old solid states through proper speakers.
Great content Glen!! thanks and fuck you!
The comment about speaker and cabinets just reminded me the cheap amp vs cheap cab video which I had to check how old it was. 7 years as of middle of next month. Good to see at least all this running in circles for people has gotten Glenn into better shape.
Hi Glenn, re- acoustic proof jam rooms.
When we started doing weekly rehearsal we had many of these arguments. As the drummer I got the guitarests to have their amps on the opposite side of the room (facing them) amazing how quickly they turned the amps down. Even guitarists don't have ears in their knees 😂
Love the show dude.
HEY GLEN....Firstly, a heart felt love your videos...
Secondly, as you progress in your skills, keep in mind what my oldest brother always said....
"You NEVER learn to play the guitar - You just start..."
It's great what you were saying about bandmates being into different things - but the band then becoming something greater. In my band of 20 odd years (Rome Burns) we have a singer who is into weird folk stuff, a guitarist into post-rock and shoegaze, and i'm a metaller - but we all come together over a shared passion for the Gothic subgenre and somehow it works. when we were younger and practiced face to face every week, I would often get so frustrated with the stuff the other guitarist was doing, but when we got over the egos and concentrated on the song as a whole we managed to craft something unique and fun.
Your playing has definitley improved! I improved a lot in 2023 and know what you're saying about realizing how much you don't know and I feel farther away from being good now 🤣
Glenn, I love your show. Keep up the great work, my friend!!!
Thanks for all the extra work so we have videos while your away from the studio.
Have a great vacation man. Winter has finally hit Calgary. -35 this week and a -50 wind chill in some areas. I could use a warm vacation!
Honeymoon Suite...guilty pleasure for sure. It would definitely be cool if you could get Derry on the show.
Very Cool, Thankyou Glenn. Once again Interesting, Informative and Entertaining Video. You Rock. Cheers from Australia
I'd love that Crate/Cab video! I have an old park g10 beginner amp. i usually hook its headphone-out up to a ir-pedal, its sooo good, you wouldnt guess... (Maybe not for metal though. But now it loves pedals! What a surprise!)
So, a recent purchase of mine was an amp stand, which helps on many ways. Keeping from rattling the drumset, less bass buildup, and you can tilt your amp up towards your ears allowing you to hear yourself better if playing with a one monitor mix, or no monitors, while keeping a lower stage volume and not bleeding in to the singers' mics so the audience can actually hear them!
Glenn, we all love you and your content kudos on the neve console.
Keep up the good work
Lots of love from across the pond. Lancashire England.
Love your thoughts on the echo chamber. You sir are spot on there.
Great video as usual Glenn! Have a nice trip!
bro i NEED that 5150 iconic i’m still playing through a fender frontman. i’ve learned a lot from this channel so if i ever did get one i’d have it pretty figured out, thanks for the showing me how to work 90% of my rig super helpful
Re: “Stop yelling.” I need to hear Glen yell once a week. It’s one of the few things that keeps me going.
Better than coffee in the early morning!!
I’ll always have something physical when it comes to amps because sometimes I just don’t want to see a screen. That being said downsizing from two heads to one BOSS IR2 has made recording/player a lot easier! Thanks for the vids!
About 30 years ago a former co-worker was getting lunch at a fast food joint and ended up having lunch with Honeymoon Suite. He had no idea who they were at first as he's a classically trained pianist and was more into "skinny tie" bands. He said they were a great bunch of guys who loved talking about music. They should have been way bigger than they were here in the States.
Those old Crates rule! The GX130C is a very close cousin of the Ampeg VH140C that was used on lots of 90s death metal and hardcore albums, and the Crate version was even used on Cannibal Corpse's "The Bleeding" album. I would think the GX65 would be the same pre-amp section, but I'm not entirely sure. Either way, definitely not to be slept on when paired with a good speaker!
EDIT: Since you're looking for suggestions, the Peavey Bandit! I own two and absolutely love them. A few of the older models came with you're absolute favourite speaker (the Sheffield
😜) and others came with either a Scorpion or Blue Marvel. I did a speaker swap on both of mine with an Eminence Swamp Thang and they're absolute monsters now!
Hey man, have fun at NAMM and the cruise. Got me a bit jealous, I'm back at work in Normal Land again.
No. You are not allowed to vacation. That is one of the deadly sins of CZcams
Another great vid.You are worth every penny😎
Hey Glenn, first I want to say that when I started learning music in the summer of 2022, you were the first resource that my teacher pointed me to when I said I love heavy metal, and I’ve been a subscriber ever since. If you ever wondered if you were doing things right, there’s your sign.
My question is this: you’ve talked about the reliable guitars you have in the studio for recording sessions, but do you have any basses around for the same purpose? With an overwhelming amount of options out there, it’d be great to hear about some tested and reliable bass guitars.
I got an amp but amp sims have made me appreciate all the amps I can't afford.
Heeey, Honeymoon Suite is actually awesome it appears!!!! Caters nicely to my proclivity for generous amounts of reverb combined with slight chorus on the guitars. And also; not a cookie monster in sight...
Hey glen, you mentioned old solid state heads with decent speakers, maybe try out the old peavey supremes. I have the second generation trans tube one and they are essentially bandits in head form. I think they are incredible amps and it would make for a great video. Keep up the good work and your guitar playing is getting better and better with every video, good job!!!
Hey Glenn! Enjoy your trip! I'm freezing in my Edmonton basement jealous of your cruise tour! I did a critical listen of my work and could not tell the difference between my mic'd DRRI and my PodGO with IR cabs. I'm listening on $3,000 of gear and if I can't tell as a Dual Income No Kids shopper, you probably can't. Time to get better instruments and get my Punk chops down!
Love your shit man. Can't wait to get some disposable income to start working towards starting my own recording studio ASAP!
The shop I used to buy my stuff from (Now closed) Set up every single guitar dressed the frets etc didnt matter if it was bargain basement or premium. I guess that's the benefit of buying things in person. They also offered free adjustments if you for example changed the string gauge within a reasonabe amount of time.
Element Bass is honestly a really great plugin as a Bass Amp Sim. I use the Glenn Frickler "Three Stage" preset all the time and it just required like really minor tweaks (like lowering treble a little bit) and it's already great in the mix. There are some small bugs, like the "Solo" buttons sometimes don't track correctly, but the "Power" button right next to it (which basically acts as a bypass) can achieve the same thing. Overall I think Element Bass is pretty great and would recommend
Our rehearsal studios here in Lincoln UK (Playing Aloud) have treatment in their rooms. It really does make a difference.
Thanks for all the great video's Glen, keep it up
With a fan base this big, just say for a few episodes, "hey, going on vacation for a bit in a few weeks, see ya 'x'", and people are smart enough to watch missed videos or rewatch the ones they see value in! Never feel like you owe us anything - you have already given us SO much!
LOVED, Honeymoon Suite. New Girl Now, Lethal Weapon (title track), Love Changes Everything. These guys crushed! Please make this happen Glenn...
your playing has definitely skyrocket ! i feel threatened XD
Another great video Glen. We'll I'm off 2 Rite Aid 2 pick up my Halls
Used a line 6 spider 2x12 with the built in effects for awhile thought it was great my first truly good non tube experience also loved crates as a kid especially with a plywood ax
Great job as always Glenn! Yes to Derry Honeymoon Suite are a great band. And FYG.
Holy jumpin' Jehosaphat Sh1t! One of my comments made it on to viewers comments. And it wasn't even butthurt of the week! You made my day, Glenn!
Can't wait for the solid state/good cab video ;^)
Thinking something original will come out of the band I recently joined , 2 long time members 30+ songs 3 new members. Ages ranging from 53 to 22. Diffrent eras and current playlists. Drummer (22) Bassist (53) 2 Guitarists (51 & 26) and a vocalist (43).
Who we idolize are all miles apart (next galaxy for me the 53 year old Bassist who's main musical influence is Zappa lol). We learned a 35 minute set of their already recorded material in about 12 hours spread out over 5 or 6 Friday night Jams and did our first show with this revamped lineup. Now we're gonna start bouncing riffs and ideas jamming and see where it goes not biased to making it fit the established material as the fan base is small , local and probably flexible enough to grow with whatever we evolve into.
Hope you’re enjoying the cruise and NAMM.
@ 15:00 This is what I love with my band!
We're six people with totally different music tastes and in the material we're preparing for our second album, they start morphing into our own sound!
Not that our first album is bad- it's a solid effort! It's just that if one knows us personally, can tell who wrote each song, without even looking at the credits!
And, as it should be, no Autotune, No Quantizing! If we can't play it or sing it live, it's not getting in the album!
Samples though...yeah, we fd up the drums sound and had no other choice, but we're learning!
This time, the drums are getting recorded in a proffessional studio... by a proffessional!
Glenn, that little bit of "the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know..." Wow. Having been a guitarist for 50 years, being a recording artist since 1980, releasing commercial content since 1986, you can't even imagine how true that statement is. It's going to take a few lifetimes before I'll even approach that "guru" level I mistakenly thought I was at when I was 24.
Bravo for making so many vids!
That Crate gave me huge nostalgia vibes. I remember when my local metal scene was nothing but Crate half stacks, and myself actually use a Crate BX-160 combo for my bass rig (the speaker is decent, but definitely looking to upgrade it). But I will say this, If the Crate sounds good with the speaker upgrade, you got to test out an old Gorilla amp.
Ha- I would watch that video!! I had a T-Power (single 10”) combo….. it sounded pretty rough 🧏🏼♂️
I did have a (Red Badge) Crate G120C into a (expanded metal Red Badge) oversized Crate 4x12 stack- (one can loaded with Celestion g12-50’s and the other loaded with G12m-70’s- both white UK Rolas!). That stack sounded massive!!!
Only bested it when I got a Marshall JCM-800 stack ;-0
Yeah when I 1st started playing the guitar store had Crate and Gorilla amps. Just plug the Crate into a 4x12 cab and it ruled!
while i'm here, here's a possible vid subject for you. emulating micing techniques. I came up before drum and amp/irs were of their modern quality (line6 pod was cutting edge lol). So i learned alot of mic/recording techniques that, honestly, have been kind of feel obsolete nowadays (unless you're a pretty successful act). I was listening to korn's follow the leader yesterday and was really taken in by the "roominess" in the drum-kit sound. Got me a bit nostalgic. It got me thinking back to the days when i was trying to get drum recordings with the classic 4-mic approach. then i started wondering how i would approach that sound (and others) with modern virtual instruments and stock plugins. I'm sure i could figure it out on my own over time (a sparse commodity), but i think that could be cool to explore as a video (unless you've done it and i missed it).
Having Derry on the show would be damn cool! Great guitar player for sure! Burning in love was killer! One of their more recent songs called Find What You're Looking For was also great track!
My favorite SS amp is the Fender London Reverb, from the early 80’s. Just a brutal gain stage, 5-band Eq on board, came in combo or head and cab. The one thing i always hated, were the speakers. You can often find the combos for 400.00 USD online, but the heads seem to be holy grail rare….
Love too have him on the show, when I was in grade 11, had an hour bus ride to and from school and that album was on everyday for the ride.
Cool I own that crate. Used a eminence speaker in it. One of my favorites now in the garage.
DUDE! You used a clip from Jonny Quest at 4:01! That show is awesome! I grew up watching that with my sibblings. I think that was the Yeti episode. Too bad it didn't go on for more seasons, but what we got is perfect. Nice to know someone else who knows the show!
Have a great vacation Glenn!
For the first 10 years or so we practised with an entire room of mattresses and pillows from a play room on the walls from a daycare center (or what ever it caled in Eng). Took about an hour to rig the instruments and the walls. But the sound acctually become beter. so it was wort it. But when you have band practice 2-5 time a week you don´t love pillows. But it brabaly worked like some kind of bass trapp. . Be safe and skilful. Pinge
Yes, no solos, context of mix! Love it!!! Took me years to learn that!
The crate test will be very interesting, I expect it to sound more than decent with greenbacks. I remem my first amp head was a shitty valvestate 8100 and a matching cab, it wasn't great by any means but after I swapped 2 of the shitty Celestion G12L's by EV12ls and the other 2 with g12M's, it sounded actually pretty decent (needed to be boosted, because not even EMGs would drive it enough, but still). The EV12L didn't have the horrendous price tag they have now though.
But if someone needs a cheap 100w amp head that would actually deliver some good stuff with decent speakers, the valvestate heads go for 200 to 250 bucks on reverb. Another great deal for tube purists are the Hughes and Kettner triamp mk1 (wich was horribly expensive back in the days) goes for 500-600 on reverb
I do have an Orange Or15 that I use for everything. Love it. Does what I want it to. Definitely going to try some amp sims though-looking for two-Sunn model T and ADA Mp1. As a bassist myself, I'd love to see a show about bass treatment and traps.
Hope the cruise is great Glenn! Don’t get seasick.....
I use corner bass traps for my live jam room. also a few on the walls this actually helps reduce bass and some treble reflections and allows me to even record it to my camera through mixer board outs louder. the sound was bad at first then added the traps and I A and B compared before and after and it definitely helps in certain rooms. done it in other rooms and got very little difference except the rooms have different wall materials.
Glenn, a lot of times I send videos of myself playing guitar with amp simulators, and some gear purists ask me where I get my tone from. I think that when you don't open your mind to new things, you lose a lot of opportunities to make your tone better. Thank you!
I used to run a Peavey Studio Pro 40 into a Fender Bassman 2×12, and it was a GODLY sound for such an aberration. Crazy thing was, at the time i played both guitar AND bass, so when my Fender head pooped out, I ran my bass through the same rig with a different EQ profile, and it actually WORKED!! Some of those old solid state amps were underrated.
2 things helped me a lot with rehearsal rooms and bass boom:
1: getting the speaker on ear-level and not blowing on my feet
2: setting up bass-traps
But also helps a ton
Keep practicing, Glenn! Learn songs you love and you will never get bored
My favorite Honeymoon Suite song is "Bad Attitude" pick rakes and simple power chord intro is awesome
Wow that old Crate brings back memories! That was the official amplifier of the Wayne Hills High school Jazz Improv band in 1994. We used to love to hit the distortion button and play Metallica songs, it would drive the teacher crazy! They should have bought a Jazz Chorus 120 if they didn't want us to rock out!
What’s funny is Metallica used/uses Jazz Chorus 120 for cleans
Crates were so common in the 90s. One of the cheaper 212 combos. Most players didn't use the distortion, only pedals.
That distortion channel button was all we had! It was our magical button that switched between boring clean jazz mode to insane mode ..and this was long before the days of Line 6 insane...Insane is what we drove our poor jazz teacher with that button. @@LebD
Yes, you can turn off a Spider's cam sim. That's what the "classic" speaker mode is in the Spider V you reviewed. Just hook one up to decent cab and go! Even works with the tiny combos, if you open them up, clip the speaker wire and solder it to a jack. Did this to my Spider V30, no surprise at all that this thing improves dramatically when you play it through a greenback.
A speaker test with the old Crate amp should make for a great video. Speaking of interesting old Crate amps, I recommend getting a hold of a GT80, which has selectable tube and solid state preamps, and I believe an 80-watt power amp. It might make for some intriguing tests and shootouts.
i got this amp, it rules. the two circuits make for a lot of sound options and it sounds very good clean, takes pedals super well no matter what channel. lovely.
Wow, I never thought about combo amps like that. Makes you wonder how many of those tiny little crap boxes actually have great distortion tones inside of them, but just need a good speaker
Be excellent to each other 😂 love it. Party on dude!
After the "Black Magic HQ" joke I shall forever imagine that Glenn's is recording these videos in a facility that looks like the Laboratory of Doctor Weird, except the island is in the middle of a Canadian lake and it's snowing rather than raining.
Back in my teens I had the worst & cheapest stereo on earth. I went down to my local guitar shop and asked if they had any cheap PA speakers. They had some slightly used Celestion PA speakers that had been swapped for another customer. They charged me £25 for the pair. I knocked up cabs from ply and bits from Tandy (Radio shack). WoW, it was amazing the difference. It went from complete crap to pretty damned good. That's when I started to think... hmmm I wonder if I can do this with guitar amp speakers. Well Glenn, as you keep telling everyone, that is a definite YES! Love your channel too. Have a great trip too 😊
I used to have a small Crate amp a bit smaller than that. I used to hook it up to my THD 2x12 cab and it sounded pretty good to be honest. The difference was night and day compared to the cheap little speaker in the combo.
I think it would be cool to see you get an "A list" product from a sponsor at the same time you do a stealth buy for a comparison of the two.
Yes get him on the show!! Honeymoon suite is awesome!
I'd love to hear what the Crate sounds like! I've got an old Crate GX1200H that I used to have hooked into a Crate 4x12 cabinet. I upgraded to a Marshall 1960a and it was a night and day difference. It served me for many years. I just grabbed a Peavey ValveKing VK100 for super cheap and it sounds insane now. I've got 2x V30's on their way I'm going to mix with the G12T-75's in the 1960a. Can't wait!
Yes we have bass traps and acoustic foam, it much better, before it was one sound ball (and it wasn't much expensive we bought it from closed studio)...
I followed the trend of running a Roland Cube into a 4x12 and it's astounding. You should give that a try. I used a 15w cube xl
I agree glenn your playing has come soooooo far. Well done.. 👏👏👏👏way to practice what you preach .. im looking to start doing some home recording .. what is the most affordable pc i can get by with? I have a laptop but its slow af and el cheapo.. but i wanna start gathering the equipment i need .. and i think a pc is the place to start.
Get Godin on the show! And Honeymoon suite! Good stuff Glenn, and your playing has improved greatly. Keep it up brother! 🎸🤘🇨🇦
Watching your videos kind of makes me want to try to invent a new kind of pickup. You know a one that would ACTUALLY sound different then all the other ones when cranked.
I had a littl VOX 8" ss combo amp. If you've been to GC you've probably seen it too with its union jack front. I pulled the amp, built a new combo with a used 12" VOX custom celestion speaker and it sounds so much better. Glenn's been saying it, wanna change your tone fast, change your speakers.
One Thing can be said about Glenn,...... He's DEFINITELY Honest AND DEFINITELY Knows MUCH About What He Speaks, As with the BAND Statement, Putting together Several different TYPES Musical Influences is the Right Formula Sometimes...👍
What works for you works.
I like all kinds of sims, modeler, etc.
And I have several classic tube amps I have used for decades.
Been watching a whole 2 years before my son was born. He is turning 7 this year, you saved me a ton of 💰 thank you from Pomona California

YES! Use a different speaker on that Crate amp! I have an original Crate R1 (the first Crate line of guitar amps) with an EV speaker that my dad swapped. While it has a great sound, the amp unfortunately does need repair.
